My 8 year old son has had growing ache a few times a month since he was little. It is very painful for him, and I have tried several things that are not really helping:

Castor oil packs, lavender / rosmary oil massage, hotwater bottle...

I would love to be able to help him, and also figure out what is causing this.

Found this on http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Growing_pains

Possible causes
The cause of these pains is unclear. The pain may be due to:
Muscular tiredness – more physical activity than usual can be linked to more aching muscles for some children, but this is obviously not 'the cause', since all children have some days when they do a lot more things than other days and most do not get pain.
Poor posture – standing, sitting or walking awkwardly puts greater than usual strain on the supporting muscles of the body. Sometimes children whose feet roll in (with very flat feet) may have more trouble with pains than other children.
Emotional upset – stress or unhappiness may trigger aches and pains, but this is not present for many children with pain.

I states that the bones grow too slowly for it to be actual growing pain, but more likely the aforementioned causes.

I would definitely rub the lactic acid out of his little legs at bedtime. Perhaps this would be a good time to introduce some basic mind over matter techniques.. perhaps ask him to imagine the pain as writing on a chalkboard and empower him to grab the eraser and make it go away?

Just thoughts. Bless his little "cotton socks"

Maybe you are best off talking to him and asking him if anyone is bullying him or ask if he is emotionally upset because some children when they are upset say they are in physical pain but sometimes it's emotional pain. I remember when I was about 5 and I said to my Mum that I was constipated and that I had belly ache but the real thing I was trying to say is that I was frustrated and I had pent up emotions in my belly. I used to have so much emotions I used to squeeze my hands tight to make fists and just squeeze my hands together like that untill the stress went.
Another thing is maybe you are best off taking him to a doctor because it may not be growing pains, it may be something else.
Good luck anyway bless him I hope he's feeling better soon xxx

My son had growing pains when he was that age. They came and went but were pretty intense at times. Growing pains are a real thing.
But I would get him checked out to make sure nothing else is going on.

Perhaps taking him to a naturopath will provide some answers. If he's growing quickly he may need something like coral calcium.

Growing pains in children is a normal part of growing up. They use a large quantity of vitamins protein and especially certain mnerals during those "spurts " of growth. He needs good protein, especially red meat protein and balanced diet including all food groups. I also would use mineral supplements and especially magnesium and calcium. Those growing bones and muscles need lots of high quality fuel.

We discovered, in our case, that the problem was caused by childrens tendancy to sit on their feet whilst watching TV.

We seemed to cure it by making them sit with their legs out stretched in front.

( Whilst sitting on the floor that is )

When daemon went to CDC he used to sit in a W shape and they told me that caused problems in childrens legs so they told me to encourage him to sit with legs forward xxx

Thanks everyone :)

I´m giving him calcium and magnesium. Also he does eat a balanced diet including red meat ( although he has said from a very young age that he does not want to eat meat...)

The doctor said that as long as the pains were only during the night, it was growing ache and nothing more serious.

I have always thought that it might be connected to the digestive problems he has had since he was a baby. So maybe a naturopath is the next step. ( In Sweden it is against the law to treat children under the age of eight with " alternative " medicine. So now he is legal at last! )

Don't forget his probiotics. A little kefir milk everyday will help with his growing pains and his immune system. Also fermented foods like sourkraut are good for his digestive system. I have just recently come to find out how important it is to eat live whole foods filled with the good bacteria that feeds us on the inside.

much love

check the thread on the gut here in Avalon. He may have guts problems (since he had digestive problems) such as allergies to gluten. With leaky guts or gut problems, the body cannot absorb all the needed vitamins and minerals and kids have growing pain. My daughter had quite a lot in her leg until one year after she stop eating wheat and gluten and took some supplements to fill her with the necessary vitamins and minerals (natural first quality supplements, the others do not worth much and have all kinds of chemicals fillers).
