Well, and so it begins...

According to CBC News...

http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2012/11/12/syria-civil-war-assad-turkey.html

The Israeli military said today it scored "direct hits" on targets in Syria after responding to stray mortar fire from its northern neighbour.

This comes as a Syrian fighter jet bombed a rebel-held area near the Turkish border on Monday, killing at least six people and wounding a dozen others, while a rocket-propelled grenade landed in Turkey, officials and witnesses said.

The incidents raised fears that Syria's neighbours could be dragged into its ongoing conflict.

Interesting: the mortar fired from Syria were fired on a territory owned by Syria in 1969 and that was taken by Israel then, to be annexed officially by Israel in the 80's but the annexion has never been recognised internationally (in other terms, this is an international illegal annexion).

This is the territory Syrians fired upon and the territory Israel wants to defend, a territory that is not rightfully theirs. What is new????

The same article has something on Palestine as well. The whole article seems more pro Israel in its tone, so I do not think it is biaised. The Hurriyet is a Turkish newspaper (being neighbours to Syria, I presumed they knew more than us on the topic). The article is originally from France Presse.

Israel fires warning shots into Syria: army

JERUSALEM - Agence France-Presse

Israeli troops fired warning shots into Syria on Sunday, the Israeli military said in a statement, in what public radio said was the first Israeli fire directed at the Syrian military since the 1973 war, AFP reported

"A short while ago, a mortar shell hit an IDF post in the Golan Heights adjacent to the Israel-Syria border, as part of the internal conflict inside Syria. In response, IDF soldiers fired warning shots towards Syrian areas," the army said in a statement.

Israel ready for any Syria development: Netanyahu

Israel is "ready for any development" on the Syrian border, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said today shortly before a mortar round from Syria landed in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

"We are closely monitoring what is happening on our border with Syria and there too we are ready for any development," he told his ministers at the beginning of the weekly cabinet meeting.

Shortly after Netanyahu's remarks, Israeli security sources said a mortar round fired inside Syria exploded in the Golan.

Israel seized the territory from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed it in 1981 in a move never recognised by the international community.

Sunday's mortar hit, the latest in a string of incidents in which fire has spilled from Syria across the ceasefire line, was near the town of Alonei Habashan, causing no casualties or damage, the security sources said.

On Thursday, three stray mortar rounds from Syria hit the Golan, prompting deputy prime minister Moshe Yaalon to warn Damascus that Israel would act to defend its sovereignty if fighting continued to spill over.

"We see the Syrian regime as responsible for what is happening along the border," said Yaalon, a senior cabinet minister and former armed forces chief of staff.

"We know how to defend the citizens and the sovereignty of the State of Israel." On Monday, an Israeli military vehicle patrolling the buffer zone was hit by gunfire, with the army acknowledging it was caused by "stray bullets." No one was wounded but the incident prompted an Israeli complaint to the United Nations Security Council in which it described the gunfire as a "grave violation" of a 1974 agreement on security in the buffer zone.

Two days earlier, three Syrian tanks entered Bir Ajam village, five kilometres southeast of Quneitra, in the demilitarised zone, sparking another Israeli complaint to the UN.

Since Israel and Syria signed the 1974 disengagement agreement, a 1,200-strong unarmed UN force has patrolled the buffer zone

all Assad had to agree with for Israel to withdraw from the Golan Heights was sever ties with Iran, right after these negotiations fell apart, the civil war began...

this came across twitter today

"Al Jazeera: The #FSA has given embassies and their respectful diplomats 72 hours to leave the country."

Russia urges new Syrian opposition to negotiate with Assad

Russia has given a qualified welcome to the formation of the new Syrian opposition if it negotiates with the Assad regime.

Deputy foreign minister Gennady Gatilov said it would be "useful" if the new group engaged in political dialogue.

Until now most of the Syrian opposition has repeatedly ruled out such talks. link (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/middle-east-live/2012/nov/12/syria-opposition-united-coalition-live)

Iran's leaders in Gaza have been voted out by Israel...

"the government is likely to order the assassination of the leaders of Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the Popular Resistance Committees and other groups... link (http://www.enduringamerica.com/home/2012/11/13/israel-palestine-live-coverage-13-november-deadly-clashes-in.html)"

I said a long time ago it would be the only way forward to peace, but are the citizens of Gaza ready to vote in leaders that won't continue their war?

the 2 state solution is the answer...

Its funny how Russia welcomes the organised opposition, while they were very well the ones getting $$ from weapons sales to Syria, guess they don't want to be seen as as bad guy.
There is no innocent parties here, Russia supplies arms, US supplies arms, Syrian government bombing civilian districts, rebels also have been said to have killed civilians.

Not rightfully theirs?

By your reckoning, then, the Americas are rightfully the Indians' and England is rightfully the Picts'. And we should take all the white man from all the commonwealth countries and cram them all in Europe. We can also return to calling Asia Minor Byzantium because the Turks had no business conquering it, seeing as it's so far from Turkmenistan and the Asian Steppes. And lets not forget the vicious and cruel Homo Sapiens that killed off all the other Homo species. I don't know where you live, but if you go far enough in history you probably will find that, by your standards, your land is not 'rightfully yours'.

In reality, there is no right or wrong, there is only is. Possession is just the ability and inclination to keep something to oneself and from others.

Israel didn't annex but conquered the Golan Heights one and a half times. Both times during war. War is and has always been an internationally accepted form of land acquisition. The international community not recognizing the 'annexation' is just politics, because nobody wants to get politically burned by taking sides in the Middle East conflict.

I don't watch CNN but here we hear about the civil war in Syria all the time. The reason why you maybe don't hear about it and why there is no intervention like we saw in Libya is because there is no oil in Syria and/or any other economic reason for the western powers to invest there.
