My contribution today !

Trees on Socotra, in Yemen, has branches facing up , with leaves that grow only on the limb . There is a bulge in the lower limbs , there is also a large trunk underneath but once looking up , the stem is split into several sections . If observed deeper , the trees in Socotra , much like a giant bonsai tree . In conclusion , Socotra has a unique and beautiful plants , really exotic !

I have to say, I have never seen anything as amazing as that with my own eyes.

Heck, I'm ashamed to admit it, but I've never actually seen the milky way with my own eyes. Not possible with the light pollution and I've lived all my life in the city, although I often wish to get out of here...

Dear All:

Not all these are beautiful, and not all of them are of nature! But here we have an astonishing collection of aerial photos...

Man-made . . . how fragile, unstable and shaky, although sometimes there is a reminiscence of natural structures and patterns, that's where images of beauty emerge . . .

I love and adore the waters of earth, the blue, the green and the morning mists.

During the cold winters, the Alaskan Wood Frog becomes a frog-shaped block of ice. It stops breathing, and its heart stops beating. When Spring arrives the frog thaws and returns to normal going along its merry way.

The Hang Son Doong cave in Vietnam is so massive the Empire State Building could fit inside. It's about 3 miles long and 660 feet at its deepest point. Recently Beijing based photographer Ryan Deboodt used a drone and a GoPro camera to get a view inside and above the cave. Check out the video below.

I wouldn't really want to walk the old 'holey' caminito, either... as my vertigo is more an 'urge to fly' [...].

They made it safe now for [almost] everyone, and re-opened it to the public in March 2015.
Unfortunately, the adventure factor is strongly diminished [nearing complete extinction]:

The two stick looking plants in the center are Yucca Trees, they flower in the spring. The white petals can be eaten as a snack, but can cause a slight DMT reaction if you eat too many of them.:o South Western Native American peoples use the root of the Yucca to wash their hair in some of their traditional ceremonies.

I started working at Turpentine Creek Animal Refuge this week
http://turpentinecreek.org/
which houses 100 big cats, and it's certainly brought to the forefront my lifelong love for cats.
Though I've never had the opportunity to get up close and personal with BIG cats, I can understand the desire to risk life and limb for the privilege to do so.
There are success stories from people who keep big cats, but there are a lot of failures, too, unfortunately.
We need to keep these splendid endangered animals alive and well until the wild is secured for them once again, but it's tragic how many of them are being abused and neglected in the process. These are some relatively successful stories:

I think those birds are bee-eaters. We had them where I lived in Spain. They fly in flocks, eating bees and wasps, and make the loveliest chirping sound as they fly. You can hear them coming from a long way away, because of their chirping. They are simply enchanting; so colorful, swift and agile :)

I took this shot last Sunday with my iPad, after a rainstorm.

Suddenly it became noticeable, with the help of the clouds, that what in normal weather conditions looks like one single mountain is actuallly four distinct ones.

Ulli, I think it is stunning that perception can be so manipulated. Here's another instance of perception possibly being mistaken - what looks like an ocean view is a slice of agate.

The agate looks like an ocean view because reality is fractal :)

In the case of Ulli's terrace view, the reason is the same, and the canopy of the trees obscures the outlines of the individual mountains, which the fog reveals.

The European roller resembles a crow in size and build. It migrates great distances from its breeding grounds in Europe and Asia, to sub-Saharan Africa, repeating the mammoth journey again in spring. It is one of Africa’s most spectacularly visible migrations! http://bit.ly/1L9yCXq

We had very high wind in Ontario, Canada today. Here are photos taken this morning on the shore of Lake Ontario, near where I was born and grew up. The water looks black from the sand churned up in the strong waves. An lady artist took the photos and shared them with me.

A waterway in Denmark this week - in the middle of the Jutland Peninsula more-or-less west of Copenhagen - pic taken by daughter there. This is part of a network of small muddy waterways that provide perfect habitat for brown trout - when these trout head out to sea they grow very large, before coming back to spawn in these waterways. They do not die after spawning as salmon do, but can spawn another year.

Snowy Owl from The Living Bird, a new book from iLCP Fellow @gerritvyn and The Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

Snowy Owls are spectacular white birds of the Arctic, birds that normally go unseen by most of us. But every few winters lemmings (on which Snowy Owls feed) reach a high in their population cycle, which results in many more young owls fledging than normal. These young owls must spread out in all directions to find food through the winter, especially if the lemmings begin to decline. When this happens, hundreds of snowies travel south and invade our northern states, giving us a glimpse into the mysterious lives of nomadic birds that have evolved to thrive in the cold darkness of an Arctic winter.

A rare ‘cap cloud’ appeared over Costa Rica earlier this year (Picture: Instagram/morales2chelo_)
A number users replied with their own photos of a similar .
The phenomenon is called cloud iridescence.
When parts of a cloud are thin and have tiny droplets of a similar size, light is diffracted or spread out, which causes various light wavelengths to emerge at different angles.
We perceive these wavelengths as colours, therefore creating a rainbow-like effect.
Unusual weather formations have been seen before over the Caribbean. In September, the sighting of a pileus, or ‘cap cloud’ over Costa Rica led a number of people to believe the world was ending.

The light was getting brighter and the cloud started growing. We thought it was a plane flying through a cloud at first
but the light changed to green and then blue so we thought we witnessed something magical like a comet or something.
Turns out it was just a naval missle. It was still a really cool experience and a treat to the workshop atendees. What a night..."

The Sierra Club is asking for people to sign their petition to help save this beautiful little Appalachian fish, the Kentucky Arrow Darter
http://sierra.force.com/actions/servlet/rtaImage?eid=70131000001Loyp&feoid=00Ni000000FxwVD&refid=0EM31000000E7Y7

The colorful little Kentucky arrow darter lives in Appalachia, where the coal industry has already destroyed an area the size of Delaware and is destroying the darter's only habitat through mountaintop removal mining. The arrow darter was once found in 74 streams, but today it’s only in 38. Nearly half of that loss happened in the last twenty years -- since mountaintop removal mining became widespread and polluted the water with metals and other contaminants.

It's time we say enough is enough. We can't stand by and let the coal industry continue to destroy these beautiful landscapes, and the wildlife and communities that depend on this land and water for survival.

Fortunately, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agrees that the arrow darter is in grave danger and they’re considering protecting it under the Endangered Species Act. Your comment can save this unique fish from near-extinction and prevent more devastation from mountaintop removal mining.

Send in your comments to the US Fish and Wildlife Service Now

1 person on the ground and 3 others in the tree.

Cloaked in the snows of California’s Sierra Nevada, the 3,200-year-old giant sequoia called the President rises 247 feet. Two other sequoias have wider trunks, but none has a larger crown, say the scientists who climbed it. The figure at top seems taller than the other climbers because he’s standing forward on one of the great limbs.

The beauty and perfection of snowflakes never ceases to amaze.

Amazing macro-photography of individual snowflakes
Photographer Alexey Kljatov takes incredible close-up photos of snowflakes in his backyard in Moscow.

"I capture snowflakes on the open balcony of my house, mostly on glass surface, lighted by an LED flashlight from the opposite side of the glass, and sometimes in natural light, using dark woolen fabrics as background."

Rockjumper -the Lilac Breasted Roller

From: ‎We Love Birds

Photo of the Day – Many of you will not know how rollers got their name but it is derived from the spectacular aerial acrobatics they perform during courtship.
These 'rocking and rolling' displays, as they are sometimes referred to, are usually accompanied by raucous calls and displays of color that could easily be described as an avian version of a firework display. One of the most colorful of these rockets of the sky is this Lilac-breasted Roller, as is evident in the photo below by Rich Lindie.
Found throughout large parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, this wonderful bird brings color to many an African sky and seems like the perfect choice for this year's final bird of the day.
Wishing you all a very happy New Year from the Rockjumper team, we'd like to say "Roll on the New Year"!

Hokkaido, Japan. Take two minutes and enter this peaceful forest.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CW9LTtn32K8

The English translation from Japanese on the park's website:

An art made of material fir and maple grown in Hokkaido. Roll a ball from the top of the xylophone and enjoy the tone.
You can find a vending machine placed at the top the xylophone and purchase a ball cost you 300 JPY for one. Play with the ball as many times you want and bring it back home as a souvenir. Don't forget the ball next time you come back to play with xylophone.
The keyboard is simply placed and set on the pedestal to make the sound better. In case the keyboard comes off or fall down, please return it to the original position in consideration for the next users.
This service takes a rest for xylophone protection on a rainy day.

PLANTS BEHAVING BADLY: MURDER AND MAYHEM

DAVID ATTENBOROUGH

This beautifully-produced nature documentary narrated by the late, great David Attenborough reveals deceit and treachery worthy of any thriller novel in the world plants. Although Darwin is most well-known for his book, 'On The Origin Of Species’, it was his next book, entirely about orchids that clarified his revolutionary ideas.

Orchids exhibit extraordinary variety and beauty and these
flowers, unlike all others are shaped for just one purpose – to seduce pollinators.

'Murder and Mayhem' examines the strange traits that some species have evolved, beginning with a look at the carnivorous varieties.

Unusual specimen of Mexican Opal with Rutile inclusions

It is really a mystery on how this Opal was formed this way.
Opal is silica and Mexican Opal is volcanic so to have rutilated needles form inside the silica or Opal it needed to have cavities.

Scientists conclude Octopus DNA is not from THIS world
http://zonnews.com/new/6556-scientists-conclude-octopus-dna-is-not-from-this-world.html
http://i2.wp.com/www.ferocesmente.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Octo-1024x767.jpg?resize=1024%2C767

A new study has led researchers to conclude that Octopuses (NOT Octopi) have Alien DNA. Their genome shows a never-before-seen level of complexity with a staggering 33,000 protein-coding genes identified, more than in a human being.
The oceans of our planet hide countless mysteries that could perhaps help answer numerous mysteries of life itself. During the last couple of decades, marine biologists have made small but steady progress towards a deeper understanding of nature and life.
http://zonnews.com/images/2016/06/1465763004_octopus-alein-dna.jpg
A group of researchers decided to do some science and chose the cephalopods in order to try and break down their DNA code, hoping to understand them better.

The octopus, squid, and cuttlefish are integrated into the coleoid sub-class of the molluscs. They have an evolutionary history that goes back over 500 million years, a period long before plants moved onto land. These creatures inhabit nearly every single ocean at almost any depth.

They are mainly characterized by a vast range of incredible morphological wrinkles: camera-like eyes, really flexible bodies, and ‘sophisticated’ chameleonic response. All of this is ruled by the larger nervous system found among invertebrates, which makes these beings the rulers of the oceans.

They possess highly developed brains and are considered as the most intelligent invertebrate demonstrating elaborate problem-solving behaviours. And ss if it wasn’t freaky enough for octopuses to open up jam jars, scientists have just concluded that these aquatic creatures are even more mysterious.

Thanks to the first-ever full genome sequence, researchers have found that octopuses (NOT Octopi) are in fact entirely different from any other animals on our planet. Their genome shows a never-before-seen level of complexity with a staggering 33,000 protein-coding genes identified, more than in a human being.

US researcher Dr. Clifton Ragsdale, from the University of Chicago, said: The octopus appears to be utterly different from all other animals, even other molluscs, with its eight prehensile arms, its large brain, and its clever problem-solving abilities.

“The late British zoologist Martin Wells said the octopus is an alien. In this sense, then, our paper describes the first sequenced genome from an alien.”

One of the mains reasons why researchers decided to investigate the molecular basis of cephalopod brain, was its ability to adapt instantly its neural network properties which result in a great impact in memory and learning capacity. These specific capabilities offer an explanation within the genome that incorporates biological mechanisms that allow tissues to rapidly change proteins in order to alter their function.

According to researchers from the University of Chicago, the octopus genome is enriched in transposons, commonly referred to as “jumping genes,” which can rearrange themselves on the genome. Even though their role in octopuses is unclear, researchers found elevated transposon expression in neural tissues. Transposons are known to have the ability to affect the regulation of gene expression and are believed to play major roles in shaping genome structure.

“With a few notable exceptions, the octopus basically has a typical invertebrate genome that’s just been completely rearranged, like it’s been put into a blender and mixed,” said Caroline Albertin, co-lead author and graduate student in Organismal Biology and Anatomy at the University of Chicago. “This leads to genes being placed in new genomic environments with different regulatory elements, and was an entirely unexpected finding.”

Octopuses have an alien genetic baggage. The scientific report mainly concluded that Octopuses share ‘Alien’ genes. This has been a ground shaking claim in the scientific community which caused an upheaval among marine biologists who seemed to be shocked and intrigued at the same time.

It turns out that apparently, we’ve had under our nose a link to humanity’s mysteries, and many of life’s greatest enigmas can be solved if we only decide to pay more attention to our ocean and everything inside of it.

The findings are published in the Journal Nature.

Secret Subterranean Worlds of Mesoamerica
I've been in the crystal mines of Arkansas (which are above ground) and the energy is amazing. I can't begin to imagine what it must feel like in these crystal caves.
http://atlanteangardens.blogspot.com/2016/04/secret-subterranean-worlds-of.html
PqzpBdZVYHU

In the year 2000, the “Cave of the Crystals” was discovered by miners excavating a tunnel for the Naica Mine in Mexico. The main chamber contains some of the largest natural crystals ever found in any underground cave, with the cave’s largest crystal found to date measuring at 36 ft (11 m) in length, 13 ft (4 m) in diameter and 55 tons in weight. These spectacular crystals became so large because the extremely hot temperatures inside the cave, reaching a steamy 136 degrees Fahrenheit, encouraged microscopic crystals to form and rapidly grow. Gazing at these gigantic crystals, one can't help but get carried away imagining what else awaits further exploration of these cave systems.

Whenever I can, I photograph "winks" from nature. Many, of course, call them nature spirits ... but not sure at this point of what exactly they are. I also photograph clouds with human forms, eyes, faces, and such. Most images in this video I captured; those that are not mine are "free to use" stock photos with "winks" that the photographers may have not seen.

I hope it's perfectly alright of me to begin my adventure on these forums with some pictures of my own. With my current seasonal location, I am subject to large amounts of snow and beautiful weather.

Sometimes, I let the giddy in me take over and random pictures happen.

Some clean and clear scenery. This world really is breathtaking.

This is a juvenile sharpear enope squid (Ancistrocheirus lesueurii). Its transparent body is covered with polka dots of pigment-filled cells, and below its eyes are bioluminescent organs. They may be found throughout the tropical and subtropical oceans, often at depths of between 200-1000 metres. (source: telegraph, wikipedia)

The pharaoh ant (Monomorium pharaonis) is a small (2 mm) yellow or light brown, almost transparent ant notorious for being a major indoor nuisance pest, especially in hospitals.[1] The pharaoh ant, whose origins are unknown, has now been introduced to virtually every area of the world, including Europe, the Americas, Australasia and Southeast Asia. The tortoise shell beetle is not completely transparent, but it does have a carapace that is nearly invisible. The purpose of the transparent outer shell is to fool potential predators, as it reveals markings on its back that act as a warning. Tortoise beetles come in many different varieties, and the design under their clear shells can be distinct and beautiful. (source: mnn)

Macropinna microstoma is the only species of fish in the genus Macropinna, belonging to the Opisthoproctidae, the barreleye family. It is recognized for a highly unusual transparent, fluid-filled dome on its head, through which the lenses of its eyes can be seen. M. microstoma has been known to science since 1939, but is not known to have been photographed alive until 2004. Old drawings do not show the transparent dome, as it is usually destroyed when brought up from the depths. (source: wikipedia)

Hyperolius leucotaenius is a species of frog in the Hyperoliidae family. It is endemic to Democratic Republic of the Congo. At one time thought to be extinct, in 2011 Hyperolius leucotaenius was found and photographed on the banks of the Elila River, a tributary of the Lualaba, during an expedition led by Eli Greenbaum of the University of Texas El Paso. This juvenile octopus is just 2 centimetres wide, and its internal organs can be seen through its transparent body. This one was spotted at night in the deep water off the coast of Tahiti. The orange spots on its tentacles change color and are used for camouflage. (source: ibttimes)

Venezuelan Poodle Moth
This moth is creepy and adorable all in one. Discovered in 2009, it kind of looks like a Pokemon. It was discovered in the Gran Sabana region of Venezuela and leaves us with many unanswered questions. The research so far leads us to believe it is from the lepidopteran genus, Artace because of it’s vast similarity to the Muslin Moth.

I can't compete with onawah's spectacular images... and I'm not trying to. :)

But here's a photo I took myself a couple of months ago... my dog Mara can just be seen right of center. The entire place is as stunningly beautiful as it looks. (The curved horizon effect was no fish-eye... it was an accidental effect of the panorama image joining.)
