Ghost Shark Caught on Camera for the First Time
(Not exactly beautiful, but certainly an interesting creature. I've never heard of anything before that has a retractable sex organ on its head!)
National Geographic
s4uwDrdLfS4

Previously discovered in the deep sea near Australia, New Zealand, and New Caledonia, researchers observed the pointy-nosed blue chimaera in the North Pacific for the first time in 2009. This footage was captured by a remotely operated vehicle as far as 6,700 feet below the ocean surface. Only recently were experts able to confirm that these fish were the same species as the ones that were previously discovered in the Southern Hemisphere. DNA sampling still needs to be conducted to be certain.

Read more about this odd-looking fish, which also sports a retractable sex organ on its head.

The wrap-around spider (Dolophones pilosa)

is a species of spider in the family Araneidae indigenous to Australia. It is named for its ability to flatten and wrap its body around tree limbs as camouflage. It is found in Western Australia along with several other species from the genus Dolophones, and was first described in 1886.

Octopus: Aliens of the Deep Sea
https://forbiddenknowledgetv.net/octopus-aliens-of-the-deep-sea/
6/28/18
"OK. We're sick of politics. I, for one can never get sick of The Octopus – and by that, I don't mean the "vast, interlocking network of criminal conspiracy that reaches into every branch and agency of the US government, many other national governments, and every sector of our societies," as the late (suicided) Danny Casolaro, investigative journalist called it.

I mean the large mollusks capable of abstract thinking but whose short lifespans range from 5 years and 6 months.

From Spain to Vancouver Island and finally to Capri, Italy, this film follows scientists as they try to understand how the octopus has evolved to have such intelligence, even by our bone-headed human standards.

Running Time: 45 min

The President tree is the name of a giant sequoia located in the Giant Forest of Sequoia National Park in the United States, east of Visalia, California. It is not the tallest giant sequoia tree in the world with a height of about 247 feet (75 m), nor the widest at about 27 feet (8.2 m) in diameter at the base, but it is the second-largest tree in the world, measured by volume of trunk, and the oldest-known living sequoia, about 3,200 years old.

"Exclusive: A Conversation with Alex Honnold and Co-Directors of “Free Solo” | National Geographic
National Geographic
Published on Oct 6, 2018

Take a look behind the scenes of the National Geographic documentary film "Free Solo," which chronicles Alex Honnold's unbelievable free-solo climb up El Capitan. He is the first person to summit the near-vertical 3,000-foot face without any ropes or safety gear."

A few years ago, I worked part time at Turpentine Creek, a wild animal refuge that rescued mostly big cats. I learned about the problems that are created by people who keep big cats at home until they can no longer take care of them for some reason (or end up being bitten or worse) and why it's really not a good idea in the first place. But certainly tempting since cats are such beautiful and interesting creatures. The subject of this video may provide a viable alternative, and the cats are certainly gorgeous, though obviously, not so big or dangerous.

Rare Dumbo Octopus Shows Off for Deep-sea Submersible
National Geographic
Published on Oct 29, 2018
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pl4pqu5FTaI
"The rarely observed, ghostly white cephalopod delights scientists remotely exploring an underwater volcano."

"Commonly called a ‘dumbo’ octopus, this deep-sea cephalopod has lateral fins that resemble big ears. Little is known about the ghostly white Grimpoteuthis octopus's behavior, because it's rarely observed. Crew aboard the E/V Nautilus had an exciting encounter with the rare, ghostly white cephalopod. The Nautilus is surveying an unexplored area of Davidson Seamount, an inactive volcano. The rocky habitat hosts large coral forests, sponge fields, and abundant unidentified species.

( It does appear to have a rather coy expression--I wonder if it really is showing off--octopi are reported to be remarkably intelligent.)

AURORA TAKES THE SHAPE OF A PHOENIX: "Last night's amazing aurora show over Senja, Norway, was nothing short of magical," reports photographer Adrien Mauduit on Nov. 11th. "During one outburst of lights, this image appeared. Huge colorful pillars took the shape of a fiery bird."

Trilobite from Russia - Boedaspis ensifer WHITTINGTON & BOHLIN 1960
Size: trilobite - 7.5 x 5 cm (in straight projection with spines); specimen - 12 x 11 x 12 cm
Age: Lower Ordovician (Volkhovian level)
Locality: Putilovo quarry, St. Petersburg region, Russia

Quick funny/embarrassing story:
I have been to the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show a couple of times, stunned and overwhelmed by the mineral and fossil specimens on display and for sale. I have heard stories of people finding outrageous bargains/finds at the show - such as the guy who bought a "rock" that turned out to be one of the largest sapphire crystals ever found. So, with my "bargain shopper" eye and a few $20 bills to spend, I happened into a hotel room in the hotel where virtually every room was fossils for sale. I saw an amazing trilobite fossil with long spines (not as grandiose as the pictured trilobite, but impressive and beautiful) in a display case, and when my eyes met the price tag $10, my heart raced. I said, "I'll take it!", and started pulling my wallet out of my pocket. I guess I didn't look like a rich fossil collector, so the dealer knew I had misread the price tag. I missed the "k" next to the $10. It was $10,000. I didn't buy it.

That Orangutan's portrait is a stunning photographic capture. One of the most moving animal portraits I've ever seen. One doesn't need to anthropomorphize to feel his sentience.

Joe Rogan made a comment a while back about apes, orangutans or chimps. He said that as many of them are using tools such as sticks and stones to gather food and other activities more and more, they are entering a stone age.

Never thought of it like that...

Not strictly nature, but mixing it up with Pahoa town. Many wild pigs and chickens all over the island. This is about 30 yards from the Post Office where you can hear strolling roosters crowing out the back door.

Natural Wonder Only Discovered in 2009
Nov 3, 2019
Mobile Instinct

"Although the natural wonder Stuðlagil and the basalt columns have always been here, much of this fascinating landscape was underwater until only a few years ago. It is almost hard to believe when standing here that this was a terrifying place under the forceful pressure of a dominating and angry river. It is by any standard one of the most beautiful places in Iceland where you can see and photograph exceptional basalt columns.

When Icelanders built the hydroelectric plant Kárahnjúkavirkjun the sources for the river Jökla were affected. Instead of running as a glacial river through the valley of Jökuldalur, its source in the north-eastern highlands was diverted into the Hálslón reservoir. From the reservoir, its flows with its former force through 60 kilometers of underground tunnels to drive the hydro-electric turbines of the power plant. So, most of the old sources of the river Jökulsá á Brú don't reach Jökuldalur anymore. "

Incredibly fantastic!
It makes me want to fly!

My dream is to put on a leather helmet, retro glasses or helmet and possibly a suit on a motorcycle at high speed in "overflight" of asphalt, in which the air to purify my skin pores and cover my lungs, in which dexterity and time to react "by itself" in thousands of seconds, before I can give my consent to maneuver.

Speed in full reaction and thinking functionality is our human nature :) something fundamental that everyone has

I was preparing to buy my motorcycle already four years ago, and I managed to slip on the ice and ruin my spine just walking :), such a stupid accident for almost four years of trauma, it is shameful and at the same time obviously I would not have had the dexterity needed to ride a motorcycle.
But at least I was left with the feeling and the dream and that's something, maybe ...
:focus:

In the meantime, the water covers any sensation in harmony with any emotion of living in nature and I will think about it instead :)
Just some places I'd like to be now ...

"Down is up and up is down. Or is it the other way around? Earth and a fortiori the whole solar system, even our home galaxy- endlessly float into space as the universe expands. As the Earth rotates around the Sun and on itself, it gives the impression that the sky is actually moving for an observer on its surface. That’s probably why it took so long for humanity to accept that the Sun was at the center of the solar system and not the Earth! "

"The Arctic Autumn is back again on Senja island in Northern Norway. And it shows! Each year, September marks the beginning of the Arctic Fall. For many locals, this season is like a new beginning. Not that the summer wasn’t full of life and colors either, but the autumn is largely considered as a favorite time to go outdoors. It might seem odd, but as life progressively goes into its wintery sleep, the landscapes come back to life! "

Many have heard by now about the recent volcanic eruption at Halema‘uma‘u crater at Kīlauea's summit on the Big Island of Hawaii. Last measurement was early this morning, Dec 26, at 583 feet / 178 meters.

This first one was taken on Dec 21 I believe, the others are more recent.

I was on a geology field trip in the mountains in Spain and along came this cow. She stopped and looked at all of us measuring the rock section and drawing pictures, then she just shook her head and walked on.

The bird has been staring at me outside my window today as I work. The deer are behind my barn, looking for a handout.

1) China's "Red Beach", one of the rarest sights in the world: a wetland on the bank of the Liaohe River in Liaoning Province.

https://explorersweb.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Panjin.jpg

2) A high resolution panorama I took myself a couple of days ago, high in the Andes in Ecuador. You could possibly take a moment to view it at full size, scanning from one side to the other to see the myriad of lakes in the valleys below. It was a cloudy day, but that somehow seemed to add to it all. :sun:

The Untersberg( Or Hitler's mountain) is the northernmost massif of the Berchtesgaden Alps, a prominent spur straddling the border between Berchtesgaden, Germany and Salzburg, Austria. The highest peak of the table-top mountain is the Berchtesgaden Hochthron at 1,973 metres (6,473 ft).

I woke up on a morning like this.:)

https://i.postimg.cc/FKWvLS7w/muntele.jpg

I climbed the mountain on that sunny day.

https://i.postimg.cc/9F4X2JgK/123.jpg

I went down from the mountain to take my bike home and I was caught in such a storm (storms in the area are frequent, short and cold) the storm and small pieces of hail caught me in the middle of the field and "whipped" me a little the skin until I reached under a tree.
Nature really has its greatness.:flower::flower:

https://i.postimg.cc/9fPFS0gf/1342-1.jpg

https://i.postimg.cc/ZRVYbgSt/1342-2.jpg

The storm lasted only a few minutes, but the air is very clean and the waters in the area are sweet and nutritious.
I'm such a "fanatic" of Nature that I think only nature can "kill" me:)

Laila Peak, in the Karakoram Himalayas. It's exceptional inasmuch as even in these days of GPS and to-the-inch satellite measurements, its true height is still controversial and disputed.

Mushrooms, unlike many other organisms, have survived all the cataclysms that have taken place on our planet. And they have a good chance of continuing to do so. Mushrooms are able to release spores into the air even in the absolute absence of wind.

7 000 000 000 000 spores - such an amount of spores is contained in a single specimen of fungus, e.g. "Langermannia gigantea"; If each of these spores were to grow and give birth to another generation of spores, then by the third generation the common mass of all fungi would exceed 800 times the mass of our planet.
-5 millimetre per minute is the growth rate of some varieties;
-80 years - the maximum age of Polypore fungi, which grow on trees. The largest of them weighed 500 kilograms.
-20 000 g - the gravitational acceleration of the spores of Pilobolus fungi. Cosmonauts support the acceleration of 3 g, Formula-1 drivers - up to 5 g.

Usually associated with purity, royalty and devotion, the edelweiss is a rare and beautiful mountain flower. The edelweiss prefers rocky places at altitudes between 1,800 and 3,000 meters, being usually associated with the Alps and the Carpathians.
Protected in many countries, including in Romania, this flower has been having many symbolic uses in various areas, from military and commercial to monetary and tourism, becoming a quite popular flower despite (or maybe thanks to) being rare and hard to reach.
The plant was declared a monument of nature in 1931 in Romania, after becoming so rare that it was in danger of extinction. But this flower is also protected in other European countries as well, and this means that picking it is forbidden. However, picking continues to be the biggest danger for the edelweiss. Just like everything that grows in very rough conditions, these flowers are more vulnerable and so, if they’re picked intensively, they just start to disappear.:flower:

The shadow of the pyramid and the Way of Heaven in Ceahlau, Romania

A hologram phenomenon that reaches every year, the maximum intensity on August 6. At sunrise, for 80 minutes, a natural hologram phenomenon emerges under the appearance of a perfect pyramid.
In the play of light and shadow that accompanies the sunrise on the mountain, the top of the mountain is projected into the sky, the earth and the sky joining by a dark road, bordered on the left by a luminous parapet, named for sacred knowledge older than 5,000 years "The Way of Heaven", touristic is a big event anyway.

The Sphinx, is a natural rock formation in the Bucegi Natural Park,Romania

The image of the sphinx appears when the rock, having an 8 m height and a 12 m width, is observed from a certain angle. The megalith has its clearest outline on 21 November, at the time the sun goes down, it is the ancient Dacian king and the eternity of Romanian identity.

Trovants - the living rocks (In Romania also)
Is a natural museum and the locals noticed that the roundish stones grew every time it rained, as if they were alive :),stones have been a common knowledge for at least two centuries, but nobody really attached any importance to them, trovants are often used for construction purposes, sometimes with dramatic results also;the largest of the samples is about 10 meters tall.

That is amazing, but no, not a pic that I took.
My avatar was the only time I witnessed something like that, and I took that pic in northern Michigan.
We were driving on a back road, when I spotted it and yelled for my husband to "Stop the car!"
We got out and watched and snapped pics until it slowly faded. There were no other people or cars around.
It was truly a Magic Moment.

The image shows the volcano expelling incandescent material and a large ash column. One of the most conspicuous elements is the 600 meter long bright beam that forms from the right side. Lightning is part of the phenomenon known as a dirty storm that occurs when mineral particles expelled by the volcano collide with each other causing electrical discharges. The photographer captured his image with a Canon EOS 6D camera, at a shutter speed of 8, a 2.8 aperture and an ISO ( sensitivity to light) of 3200. The same volcano contributed to the success of the photo, says Tapiro, as “ The beam worked like a giant flash ”.

'Pink beach, Komodo Island, Indonesia.
The pink beach of Komodo Island, is one of seven pink sand beaches across the world. What makes the sand appear pink under the sun are microscopic residents, organisms called Foraminifera. They produce a red pigment on the coral reefs and leave small red particles behind that blend with the white sand.'

'This rare orchid named ‘Flower of the Holy Spirit’ only blooms once a year. Before blooming it looks like a Mother and Child, and once it blooms it turns into a Dove in Flight'
Just came across this with respect to these images. Well, still a sort of uplifting pic even if the images are unrelated:
'None of this is true. The first picture is a seed pod and not a bloom. Both picture are unrelated, completely different plants. The white bloom is a Habenaria radiata, known as the egret orchid, not the Holy Ghost...'

'A perfect image from Evan McKay
"The last time I shot the Milky Way here I got quite a good reception so I thought I'd give it another go with the new gear that I have. It was just as challenging as last time and I think the spray was even worse, but somehow managed to get some clear shots of it. It's probably technically a composite since I moved the tripod further away from the waterfall for the Milky Way to avoid spray, but it's aligned where it should be and scaled correctly.
