'TRIBAL SHIELD OF GUARDIAN RAINBOW 🙏
Isn't this photo just brilliant?
If you allow your imagination and senses take over a lil bit, you might feel soothing and tranquil vibe of this family.
For me, rainbow shield shining above the youngest pod member is just nature's unique way of protecting this precious tribe.
Maya Angelou once said: "Be a rainbow in someone else's cloud" and I only hope this inspirational quote will remind us all, that in the end, all that matters is kindness. How you treat yourself and all living things, makes a difference..'

Thanks Jill (and everyone else),
Every time I think I just can't read another post without being more depressed I pop in here and you put a smile in my heart. Here's one more magical animals story, to put a smile in anyone's heart. (But alas, no photos. :flower: )
A friend of mine, when she was a little girl, would go hiking in the Sierra with her Mom. She was about 6 years old. She and her Mom rounded a bend in the trail, and right there was a Momma bear with her little cub.
So the two Mommas and their cubs stopped right there and looked at each other for a long time. Then, respecting the divinity of motherhood, they passed on the trail and just continued on their ways.

In Arkansas, quartz crystal is mined with huge, destructive machinery that destroys a lot of the crystal in the process.
It's very upsetting!
But in this video of an amethyst crystal cave in Canada, crystal mining is done the way it should be.

'4500 Years Old World’s 3rd Oldest Tree🌲
The Cypress of Abarkuh or Sarv-e Abarkuh or Zoroastrian Sarv, is a Cupressus sempervirens Tree in Abarkuh in Yazd Iran 🇮🇷 It is the World’s third oldest tree after a Great Basin bristlecone pine (5,062 years old) and Methuselah (4,845 years old). This oldest living heritage of Iran is about 28 meters high and 11.5 meters wide at its trunk.
Many legends and myths surround this tree as it is one of the oldest creatures on earth and is located in a special place, too. According to one legend, Noah or his son planted the tree after the great storm, and another says that Zoroaster, the ancient Iranian spiritual leader was the one who planted it. Myths say that this tree has a special spirit that can keep living for a thousand years.'

I don't know if this can be embedded, but it's worth viewing if you can go to the FB page. It's an underwater video of a school of fish with feeding birds diving into it and swimming back up to the surface, and a dolphin swimming through it.

'The eruption of the Voragine crater on Mount Etna in Italy, on December 2-3, 2015.
The volcano began to erupt, starting on December 2, 2015, projecting a lava fountain and jets of hot material as high as 1 km (around 3,200 feet) over the summit and accompanying ash plume up to 3km (around 9,800 feet) into the air. As per scientists, it was among the most violent eruptions from the volcano in the past two decades (before 2015). However, according to Italy’s national institute of volcanology, the paroxysm lasted less than an hour. High level winds from the southwest had pushed ash over villages in Sicily and southern Italy.

I was going to skip over this one as there seems to be issues of my stuff disappearing - still, I couldn't let this one go - I found it an amazing shot so hope it stays up for awhile:
'Took this picture in the dark last night. I guess the moisture in the air along with my flash is what caused the rainbow effect. I think it's pretty cool!'

Thanks for your perseverance Jill. Worth it! Beautiful looking spider and what a web! I'd love to see more the little critter if chance permits.
Also the Fly shot is amazing. I got a camera with macro lens a while back and had so much fun zooming in on nature ...it reveals such intricate and wonderful details.

I have no idea what this plant is - does anyone know? One comment (so far) just says its real. Looks like its dispersing seeds through a trumpet. Interesting plant.

Anyway, is you are on FB, you can see many beautiful images from the Mineralogical Society here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/107448624393

A Strangler fig tree in a park in Nanning, Guangxi, China.
https://i.imgur.com/2F6fUaW.jpg
Strangler figs are named for their 'strangling' pattern of growth upon host trees, which often results in the host's death, as they suck up the nutrients from their victims. The strangler fig becomes a "columnar tree" with a hollow central core when an original support tree dies. However, there is some evidence that shows that trees encased in strangler figs have a better chance of surviving storms.

The pictures in Post 883,
That’s exactly how I remember the mountains and the Li River, ( spent three hours on a riverboat before we reached Guilin), when I visited Guilin many years ago. It was beautiful then still beautiful now but I’m sure the city is more modern today. It was the only time that I ever saw mountains with rounded tops and covered in trees to the top.

Check out this strange circular rainbow cloud spotted in China on August 21, 2022. This is called a "scarf cloud", which occurs when a thunderstorm's updraft creates a pileus cloud and the sun's angle interacts with the ice crystals in the pileus cloud. The scarf cloud is formed by the cooling and condensation of moist air forced up and over the peak. When the sunlight is at the right angle, the light diffracts between the droplets and the ice crystals in the cloud, creating a rainbow colour.

Nice pic. Amazing that ice can do that, have that form. BTW, -10C is near t-shirt weather in some countries (Canada here).
The brave one is the Captain of that ship-selfie. Icebergs can flip on a dime, tho it times like a train wreck. That spectacular arch feature means it has sat/floated in that configuration/orientation for a while, so the bottom must have been melting too. Brave man, and maybe crew. 👻

So this is the first time I've seen this here on the Emerald Isle. This is Freezing Fog. I took this photo around 9am this morning. But the weird thing is, it is now the middle of the afternoon and it is still like this except a little brighter white. It is so overcast the sun never broke through to melt the fog. Usually, you can see pretty much some hills, fields, the town, and the Irish Sea in the distance.

That looks photoshopped to me, and I checked the link, but there was no information about it forthcoming to verify one way or the other.
The intention in starting this thread was to feature photos of real, natural scenes from Nature.
Nature is fantastically beautiful enough without altering it, and our appreciation of it is somehow devalued, imho, when it's altered by human hands.
It's also very much appreciated if the source of the photo and/or the location can be posted as well.
Thanks!

I don't know the location of this picture but read that it was from an actual photographer and judging by the comments accompanying the picture it is being recognized as such. Maybe there is a colour touch up (just speculation on my part) but I personally don't find it "devalues" the scene. Anyway, I view this as a nature pic and something beautiful to get lost in so I didn't delve so much into the details. Some pictures don't give a lot of background info - I just share pics I find appealing and uplifting and find the how, when, where, details secondary to the actual visual. However, since this is your thread, I will not post any more pics unless they come with all the background info.

Thanks Eva,
They don't need to come with ALL the background info, but it helps when we know something about the origin.
Can you share a link with info about the actual photographer and the comments?
There is so much dishonesty and misinfo online these days, it takes a lot of discernment to know the true from the false.
I'm certainly not always right, but I have never seen anything like that photo before, so I have a hard time accepting it as undoctored.
In any case, thanks for helping to keep this thread going. I think it can be very uplifting, and we all need that these days!

Double Red Sprites
Planet Earth Phenomenon

"Amazing double red sprites captured by Panagiotis Tsouras in Aegean Sea Greece earlier today: https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10160614698206234&set=a.10151508561271234
Red sprites are large-scale electric discharges that occur in the mesosphere, high above thunderstorm clouds, or cumulonimbus, giving rise to a varied range of visual shapes flickering in the night sky. They are usually triggered by the discharges of positive lightning between an underlying thundercloud and the ground. Reports of optical phenomena above thunderstorms where first published in scientific literature in the late 19th century (Toynbee and Mackenzie, 1886, Everett and Everett, 1903). In the 1950s the first airborne observation was reported from a commercial airlines pilot over Fiji (Wright, 1950). CTR Wilson, regarded as the father of lightning theory, was the first to try to describe these phenomena physically (Wilson, 1956). Not until 1989 were these phenomena captured on film. A group from the University of Minnesota recorded a twin upward flash from distant cloud tops while testing a low light level TV camera intended for sounding rockets (Franz,et al 1989)
The name "sprite" was first proposed by Dr. Davis Sentman from the University of Alaska and first used in literature by W.A. Lyons in 1994."https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F-mElMrWwAA_LCw?format=jpg&name=small

'VORONYA CAVE
Voronya Cave, the closest point to the center of the Earth.
One of Jules Verne's most desired dreams, published in his 1864 novel, "Journey to the Center of the Earth" was to enter the interior of the Earth. Although Veryovkina Cave does not take us to these depths, it does allow us to reach the closest known point to the center of the planet.
Veryovkina Cave, approximately 2,212 meters deep, is the deepest cave in the world.
It is located in the pass between the Krepost and Zont mountains in the Abkhazia region, an independent state officially declared part of Georgia. In 1968, the cave was discovered by some speleologists from the city of Krasnoyarsk, who managed to reach a depth of 115 meters.
In 1986, a new group from Moscow led by Oleg Parfenov reached the remarkable depth of 440 meters. Since 2015, a series of new raids by the Perovo-Speleo group have determined that the cave was deeper, repeatedly reaching new and better marks until reaching a record 2,212 meters in March 2018 and recording an underground tunnel system of more than 6,000 meters .

'The deepest and largest natural well on the planet is called Xiaozhai Tiankeng. It is located in Fengjie, Chonqinun Municipality, in the heart of China. This incredible well is completely natural and reaches 662 meters deep, 626 meters long and 537 meters wide. But the most surprising thing is not just its size or its almost vertical walls, but the explosion of life it hosts.
Xiaozhai Tiankeng is what geologists call a well or ditch, a depression of the soil generated, among other things, by the effect of water. In this case, it was formed on a cave and houses an underground river measuring a total of 8.5 kilometers and flows into a spectacular waterfall. Its enormous size makes it the well of its kind, known as tiankeng, the largest and deepest in the world.
Beyond its size, Xiaozhai Tiankeng impresses for the biodiversity that houses within it. Its base is so large that it's home to 1,300 species of plants including ginkgo and wild animals. Among the most fascinating "tenants" who stroll through their underground forest, stands out the nebula panther (Neofelis nebulosa), an unmistakable hairy cat that reaches up to 1.1 meters and often rests in trees.
This tiankeng is located in a large karst area of 280 km2 formed by limestone. Experts believe that the well, between 511 and 662 meters deep, has taken shape in the last 128,000 years. For much of its history, until the roof of the cave collapsed, it was a huge underground cave. China also has other significant sized tiankengs, such as Dashiwei. Strangely, despite its size, Xiaozhai Tiankeng has begun studying relatively recently, although the local people have known him since ancient times.'

A most wonderful image indeed, Bill, but I don’t think it’s a “picture”.
What are those spheres above the bird’s wings? The background has mostly verticle streaks that seem to indicate rain, but now we have spheres both touching and above the bird that look like they are stationary. Like blobs of water in a space-station televised-experiment relatively-stationary situation.
I vote tampered, with a half chance it’s a full brain-hiccup AI hallucination.

Ice flowers in Norway
It is a natural phenomenon that occurs in the seas of the polar regions. The flowers are formed from water vapor that escapes from cracks in the thin layer of surface ice. When these vapors come into contact with the cold air, they crystallize.https://scontent-ord5-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/458273593_2059889811094286_2893339894808909373_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_p526x296&_nc_cat=1&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=aa7b47&_nc_ohc=LIq013Rd_dgQ7kNvgHPfNv4&_nc_ht=scontent-ord5-2.xx&_nc_gid=AgcVKCY9VZhB0ehtU2lXtzp&oh=00_AYDurx1nv1l3bTvmiyCmhmtsfRsnwvscogutf3RPbQw4NA&oe=66E44823

'Once upon a Forest - Documentary Film - Auroville Botanical Gardens
The Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest is the rarest of forest types in India, as it’s range is narrow and these areas have been population for many thousands of years. Tiny fragments remain of pristine forest, protected by the local cultural practices. Today less than 0.1 percent of the forest remains in a form that resembles what it might have been like before the arrival of humans. At this juncture in time the forest still has an important role to play, as we attempt create a resilient environment that we are able to pass on to the next generation. The effects of climate change will be felt along the Coromandel coast of Tamil Nadu, as the intensity and frequency of cyclonic events increase. This is a forest that is adapted to the strong winds, through its dense rooting systems and low canopy height. It is a remnant, but a precious one, that has many lessons to teach us and gifts to offer, it is up to us to get to know it and receive the wealth it can provide for us.'

'The Haleakalā silversword (Argyroxiphium sandwicense subsp. macrocephalum), found only on the high slopes of Maui’s Haleakalā volcano is a rare alpine plant that blooms just once in its lifetime. For decades, it waits in silence, its shimmering silver leaves gathering sunlight in the thin mountain air. Then, without warning and only once in its life, it blooms.
According to National Park Service, this event typically occurs after 20 to 50 years though some may flower as early as 7 years depending on environmental conditions. This final act of beauty lasts only about seven days. And then, having poured every ounce of stored energy into reproduction, the plant dies. It’s a symbol of endurance, timing, and the profound rewards of waiting. In a world driven by urgency, it stands as a quiet reminder: some of nature’s most magnificent displays require a lifetime to unfold.'

A globular ray, also known as ball lightning, is a rare and mysterious atmospheric phenomenon characterized by a luminous, spherical ball of light that typically appears during thunderstorms. These light spheres can vary significantly in size, ranging from a few centimetres to several meters in diameter, and exhibit a range of colors, including bright white, yellow, red, blue, and even green. Unlike conventional lightning, which follows a linear path between clouds or between a cloud and the ground, globular rays move erratically and often slowly through the air, sometimes near the ground, and can last for several seconds before vanishing, sometimes with a small explosion.

wow rgray222. Years go my mother told me she was doing the ironing in the kitchen during an electrical storm back in 1950 before I was born, when a large (not as large as the one above) floated in the back door. As she stood there mesermerised, my grandmother shouted at her to leave it while it hovered around the kitchen for a few seconds and then suddenly accellerated back out of the door with a huge bang! She said it seemed alive and intelligent. I've always been enthralled by that story and thanks to you I've just seen the sheer power of it . . .

Étretat, France - Here's what the French want you to know about this place
A landscape unlike any other in the world! - On the Alabaster Coast
The cliffs and rock formations steal the show in Etretat, thanks to their exceptional natural beauty and the fact that famous Impressionists painted them so memorably. Erosion has created extraordinary arches in the chalk either side of the town. There’s also an amazing needle-like structure, known in French as the Aiguille. A walk up the cliffs to the west of Etretat leads you to an 18-hole golf course with breath-taking views over the Aiguille, while a walk to the east will bring you to the Jardins d’Etretat, a beautiful Asian-inspired garden affording stunning views over Etretat and its bay across to the Aval arch famously immortalised by Claude Monet and Eugène Boudin. Head back down to the seafront as the sun goes down and you can also see Etretat’s cliffs magically light up.
However, there is more to Etretat than the cliff formations and pebble beach. The small town beyond is picturesque and full of pretty restaurants and shops, while the remarkable wooden covered market and 19th-century villa Le Clos Lupin are both worth a visit.

At time of this post, looks like the sun is setting on the Hawaiian Islands. Been dark for over two hours here in the Mountain time zone.
Two days ago this mountain was rage-spewing hot bright rivers of liquid rock. Now, dreamy smoke is saying “hey, what’s up fam, you OK?”.
