When I forget to feel grateful for the many blessings of just being alive and part of this wonderful planet, Nature reminds and inspires me.

I wanted to share this hilarious picture.
In Seattle WA there is a park called Magnusson or something like that.
It's near the huge NOAA place on Sand Point.

Few months back, more like 1/2 year back (in smoke lol),
I tried to meditate on the shore of the park's lake.
While trying to wake up that ol' pineal, a big red PONTOONED heli landed RIGHT in front of me.

It ruined my meditation and my time at the park, but you get to see my photo of Rainer behind the pontooned idiotcraft.

Happy New Year, Avalonians! I hope this year will see much more appreciation and conservation of our beautiful planet.
These nature photographers also deserve our appreciation for their painstaking efforts to capture these photos, videos and recordings.

Frost Flowers on Gun Lake

Gun Lake in British Columbia,Canada - frost flowers.

When these photographs were taken "the air was extremely cold and extremely dry, colder than the ocean surface. When the air gets that different from the sea, the dryness pulls moisture off little bumps in the ice, bits of ice vaporize, the air gets humid - but only for a while. The cold makes water vapor heavy. The air wants to release that excess weight, so crystal by crystal, air turns back into ice, creating delicate, feathery tendrils that reach sometimes two, three inches high, like giant snowflakes. The sea, literally, blossoms."

Eye of the Moon

In this perfectly timed shot we see the moon through the North Window arch at Arches National Park in Utah. The park is located in Eastern Utah and is known for preserving over 2,000 natural sandstone arches. The park is 76,679 acres (31,031 ha) in area. Its highest elevation is 5,653 feet (1,723 m) at Elephant Butte, and its lowest elevation is 4,085 feet (1,245 m) at the visitor center. Forty-three arches have collapsed due to erosion since 1970.

Why is the sea slug green?
The photosynthetic sea slug Elysia chlorotica appears like a dark green leaf as a result of retaining chloroplasts from its algal prey, Vaucheria litorea, in cells lining its digestive tract.

Lovely thread and some good pictures here. I most appreciate the ones taken by members themselves. Nature photography is such a wonderful way to connect with our surroundings, and although there is not a lot of nature where I live, I make myself a habit to go and take photographs whenever I can. I love it. This is my Photo Galery page (scroll down the page) :

It's kind of difficult to look a honey bee in the eye these days, with all the toxins that are making their survival, and ours, so very precarious.

Melody Ables posts us this wonderful recent image with this covering text - 'Aurora from the storm! Here is a look at aurora from Fairbanks, Alaska. The photo was taken by Dennis Mammana who said, "What a great (and green) way to begin St. Patricks Day! The CME hit us in Fairbanks, Alaska right as predicted late on the evening of March 16 and, with few exceptions, kept us aurora photographers hopping all night long. The only reason I gave up around 2 a.m. is that I ran out of memory cards for my digital camera! One of the most lovely auroral shapes--the corona--occurred one after the other after the other and was one of the prettiest displays Ive seen in many years." The storm is back up to a G2 so probably more nice displays from tonight are to come. At the moment locations like northern New England, Michigan down to Colorado are likely to see more tonight. Aurora has been reported in Colorado.'

Rock Balance Demonstration by Michael Grab July 2012

The challenge here was making this balance happen within the 5 minute video limitation of my camera... it took about 5 takes to finally get it (AFTER getting to know the rocks). *FOCUS. Relax. the coolest thing is that the camera was able to capture the creation AND natural collapse of the balance before the 5 minute limit. completing the cycle. :)) so here's how it's done. *notice the technique of bracing the lower rocks while placing the next. the top rock acts as a pin to stabilize the whole structure, which is why it is very helpful to use a LARGE rock on top. plus, i like the overall design balance that the large top rock adds. and i love shades of red. as soon as i found that red rock, i knew it must go on top. it was a beautiful rock. :) contemplate, try it for yourself. all about presence in the moment. SLOW down. become the balance. :)

The Western Parotia (Parotia sefilata)

Like other birds of paradise, the Western Parotia is sexually dimorphic. The male has black plumage with an iridescent structurally coloured golden-green breast shield and triangular silver feathers on its crown. It is adorned with elongated black plumes at the sides of the breast and three erectile spatulate head wires behind each eye.In courtship display, the male performs a ballerina-like dance with its elongated black plumes spread around skirt-like, right below the iridescence breast shield. During the spectacular dance, he shakes his head and neck rapidly to show the brilliance of his inverted silver triangle-shaped head adornment to attending females.
Endemic to Indonesia, the Western Parotia is found only in the mountain forests of Vogelkop and the Wandammen Peninsula of Western New Guinea.

Pantanal - Brazil

The Complexo do Pantanal, or simply Pantanal, is a biome composed primarily of a steppe savanna, flooded mostly with 250,000 km ² of extension, average altitude of 100 meters, one in the south of Mato Grosso and northwestern Mato Grosso do Sul, both states of Brazil, and also encompass the northern Paraguay and eastern Bolivia (which is called the Bolivian Chaco), a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve, located in the Pantanal National Park. Despite the name, there are a small number of wetlands in the Pantanal region. Moreover, it has a few mountains, which facilitates the flooding.

Amazing photo of Waterspout Strikes Tampa Bay, Florida

The photo was taken by Joey Mole, of Safety Harbor, Fla.

Iridient bursting soap bubbles

Swiss photographer Fabian Oefner has explored the art of the bursting bubble in his project 'iridient'. coaxed through the funnel of a sugar dispenser,
the soapy air pockets are immortalized in two states: the moment immediately before and after rupturing;
and the famous spectrum of colors. the artist explains that this combination of timing is extremely challenging and needs a lot of patience.

Inside the Giant Crystal Cave in the Mexican Desert

Nearly 1,000ft below the Chihuahua Desert in Mexico, a gigantic cave was discovered by two brothers drilling in the Naica lead and silver mine in 2007-2008. It was an eerie sight. Obelisks shaped crystals up to 37 feet (11 meter) in length and the equivalent height of six men jutted out from the damp rock walls, and there were hundreds of blade-sharp crystals. The giant obelisks are formed from groundwater saturated in calcium sulphate which filtered through the cave system millions of years ago. These water warmed by an intrusion of magma about a mile below, began filtering through the cave system millions of years ago. When, about 600,000 years ago, the magma began to cool, the minerals started to precipitate out of the water, and over the centuries the tiny crystals they formed grew and grew until 1985, when miners unwittingly drained the cave as they lowered the water table with mine pumps. The cave has now been fitted with a heavy steel door to preserve this beautiful wonder for generations to come.

Is it possible to get a frog to pose?
From: I ****ing love science

You all seemed to really enjoy this spectacular photograph of a frog sheltering from the rain earlier, so here's a few more details.

The image was taken by Penkdix Palme in Jember, East Java, in Indonesia. According to the photographer the frog actually angled the leaf towards the rainfall to provide maximum shelter, and remained there for approximatelt 30 minutes.

2000-year-old tree in South Africa is known as the tree of life (Baobab)

https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s403x403/1098339_10151517449085658_1568997975_n.jpg

I hadn't seen photos of ancient yew trees before, so this impressed me. And then I found this lovely photo:
http://us.123rf.com/400wm/400/400/fisfra/fisfra1107/fisfra110700007/10022422-wooden-door-of-st-edwards-church-with-two-ancient-yew-trees-stow-on-the-wold-cotswolds-uk.jpg

Back in April, I posted a channeled message about sacred trees here:
http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?58028-Sequoia-Crystalline-Portals-of-Healing-The-Sacred-Energy-of-Trees-Lord-Metatron-via-James-Tyberonn
Here is an excerpt from that message:
"Quote We tell you that the Giant Sequoia and Redwood were once hallowed by ancient, more enlightened people, including those of Atlantis and LeMuria. Hallowed not as a commodity or resource, but as intelligent Divine beings, in much the same way in which the Druids revered the Oak, Holly and Yew. For these are among the highest expressions of the realm of Trees; indeed such trees have the capacity of not only collective energy, but are capable of individual awareness. "

It's always a good time to remember our friends, the trees...

The ‘Underwater Waterfall’ Illusion at Mauritius Island

From: Amazing World

Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) off the southeast coast of the African continent. Mauritius was first discovered by the Arabs in 975 AD, then by the Portuguese between 1507 and 1513. Since then there have been periods of succession and colonization between the French, Dutch and British. The island became a republic in 1968.

Located at the Southwestern tip of the island you will find a fascinating illusion. When viewed from above, a runoff of sand and silt deposits creates the impression of an ‘underwater waterfall’. Satellite views (as seen in the Google Maps screenshots below) are equally dramatic, as an underwater vortex seemingly appears off the coast of this tropical paradise.

Butterfly Takeoff at 2,000 Frames per Second

Our charming host, Destin from
the fun science channel on YouTube,
Smarter Every Day always had the
impression that butterflies were not
the greatest of flyers.

That is, until he went to the Amazon
rainforest to photograph pretty local
butterflies at 2,000 frames per second...
the majesty and grace of a butterfly's
flight is revealed when one views it from
a different perspective in time.

That's so cute! J'aime les grenouilles...after your butterfly vid i watched "cat-science" but i don't know how to insert a video and couldn't find the linkadress.

It's not a "beautiful nature picture" per se but fascinating how the cat manages to land on it's feet in a split of a second dropped upside down from a very low height...maybe you can find it onawah?

It's tough to tell which end of this tiny planthopper is which—and that's likely just what is intended by its unusual appearance. Many planthoppers, like this one, exude long strands of waxy secretions from their abdomens. They may fool predators into harmlessly striking this "breakaway" feature so that the insect may escape unharmed. (Related: "Insects Use Gears in Hind Legs to Jump.")

Kinship with All Life

THE ELEPHANT'S JOURNEY TO PAY RESPECT, BUT HOW DID THEY KNOW?

Lawrence Anthony, a legend in South Africa and author of 3 books including the bestseller, The Elephant Whisperer. He bravely rescued wildlife and rehabilitated elephants all over the globe from human atrocities, including the courageous rescue of Baghdad Zoo animals during US invasion in 2003.

On March 7, 2012 Lawrence Anthony died.
He is remembered and missed by his wife, 2 sons, 2 grandsons, and numerous elephants.

Two days after his passing, the wild elephants showed up at his home led by two large matriarchs. Separate wild herds arrived in droves to say goodbye to their beloved 'man-friend'. A total of 31 elephants had patiently walked over 12 miles to get to his South African House.

Witnessing this spectacle, humans were obviously in awe not only
because of the supreme intelligence and precise timing that these
elephants sensed about Lawrence's passing, but also because of
the profound memory and emotion the beloved animals evoked
in such an organized way: Walking slowly, for days, making their way in a solemn one-by-one queue from their habitat to his house. Lawrence's wife, Francoise, was especially touched, knowing that the elephants had not been to his house prior to that day for well over 3 years!

But yet they knew where they were going. The elephants obviously wanted to pay their deep respects, honoring their friend who'd saved their lives - so much respect that they stayed for 2 days 2 nights without eating anything.

Then one morning, they left, making their long journey back home.

'Murmuration' - Mind-Boggling Flocking Behavior of Starlings

To me, it feels like this phenomena is the oversoul of the starling using each bird to create a spontaneous, synchronized art form of superb grace and fluidity.
Though no doubt, Nature being the practical being that She is, there is some practical purpose as well.

This is a film called 'Murmuration',
which is the term used to describe
a flock of starlings and their mind
boggling feats of flight before settling
down for the night.

This was made by two young women,
Sophie and Liberty, who are independent
documentary filmmakers based in
London and New York.

They find inspiration from bike rides, being
by water, making things and meeting people.

Spiders that look like stained glass mirrors.

This isn’t a stained-glass sculpture or piece of delicate jewelry – it’s a real live spider. These spiders, called mirror or sequined spiders, are all members of several different species of the thwaitesia genus, which features spiders with reflective silvery patches on their abdomen.
The scales look like solid pieces of mirror glued to the spider’s back, but they can actually change size depending on how threatened the spider feels. The reflective scales are composed of reflective guanine, which these and other spiders use to give themselves color.
Not much information is available about these wonderful spiders, but the dazzling specimens in these photos were photographed primarily in Australia and Singapore.

20 Vivid Hummingbird Close-ups Reveal Their Incredible Beauty

When it comes to birds, the terms “strong” or “beautiful” might inspire images of fierce eagles or decadent tropical parrots. But both of these birds will certainly find strong contender in hummingbirds, which possess a unique sort of delicate beauty and a mastery of avian maneuvers like no other. We created this list of 20 stunning hummingbird photos to show you just how beautiful they can be.
Capturing a photo of a hummingbird in flight with clearly focused wings can be very difficult, as some varieties are capable of beating their wings up to 52 times a second. This gives them the ability to hover and fly backwards – something that few other birds can do and that none have mastered the way the hummingbird has.

'Fire rainbows' are a rare phenomenon that only occur when the Sun is higher than 58° above the horizon and its light passes through cirrus clouds made of ice crystals. At the right alignment, the ice crystals act as a prism, and refract the light to look like a rainbow. Photo by Livescience.

These are a couple of images of "Miller Creek" near my house. When Wade Frazier visited with me, I took him to Miller Creek, but it wasn't very pretty that day.

Here and now: We just had a phenomenal weekend - the end of September is usually in the 50°F ballpark, and it was nearly 80° here for the past 3 days. These shots were taken today, Sept 28th, 2014.

Wow! I stay with my mouth open. This is our beautiful mother. And so many people stare at the TV screen for hours and hours per day, and so many others (including me) stare at the concrete walls and reflecting glass plates of their cities day after day. Unimaginable how human beings are able to exist without admiring and loving this outburst of beauty every second of their life.
