Obama Seeks To Drive U.S. Over the Cliff

November 13, 2012 • 12:48AM

With Congress coming back in session this afternoon, Obama is planning to make sure his austerity package comes out on top. On Tuesday, Nov. 13, meetings will be held with (what's left of the) labor leaders; Wednesday he plans to meet with business leaders, then, after a quick breeze-through of storm-ravaged New York city, Thursday, to meet with Congressional leaders on Friday. These "business leaders" would include the "Patriotic Millionaires for Fiscal Strength," who have pledged to pay more taxes as a patriotic duty. They plan on holding a press conference at noon, Wednesday, then turning their $1,000 suits on Congress for two days of (notably bipartisan) meetings. The White House has already announced that Obama will take an austerity campaign on tour—after he comes back from a week-long swing through Asia—ironically beginning right after Thanksgiving.

Meanwhile, Congressional leaders continue their partisan sparring. Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), a co-chair of the former Simpson-Bowles "Cat Food" Commission, threatened to let the nation go over the "cliff," telling ABC News that, "If the Republicans cannot agree with [raising taxes on incomes over $250,000]... that may be the way to get past this [impasse]." This is an echo of Obama's plan, in which he assumes the election gave him a mandate to raise taxes. Appearing on the same show, Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) put forth the Republican line, that what must be gone after is the tax loopholes, another pie in-the-sky solution.

As if in preview of what's in store, the state of Ohio has announced that food stamp cuts have been scheduled, starting in January. The federal government, using a slight of hand reminiscent of the COL (Cost of Living) fraud which allows the federal government to chisel on Social Security, is going to recalculate the "standard utility allowance" for low income persons applying for food stamps to take into account last year's reduction in heating expenses, and thus effectively cut the amount that poor people will get in SNAP benefits. A projection by the Toledo blade says that the recalculation could result in cuts of about $50 a month for families. About 1.7 million Ohioans will be affected. The Ohio State Job and Family Services department apparently appealed the murderous, chiseling change to the USDA, which runs the SNAP program, but got no cooperation.
