A Cambridgeshire politician has called for a spending review after the Highways Agency told him it would cost £30,000 to put up two small safety signs on a rural road.

MP for North East Cambridgeshire Steve Barclay, who also sits on a parliamentary committee that looks at wasteful spending, said it is one of the most overly expensive cases he has ever encountered.

Barclay lobbied the Highways Agency to introduce signs warning motorists of upcoming turns into Lindens Close, near the village hall at Thorney Toll, on the A47 between Guyhirn and Thorney.

Residents feel the road is an accident hot-spot, but Barclay was shocked when the Highways Agency’s divisional director David Gingell told him the cost of two road safety signs would be £30,000.

The high estimate was because as well as signs, the agency would have to pay for new poles, traffic management surveys, workers to do the installation work and then for ongoing supervision.

Barclay told the Peterborough Evening Telegraph: “Such a ridiculous figure for the installation of two simple signs is unbelievable.

“As a member of the Public Accounts Committee I often see wasteful spending, but this strikes me as one of the most extreme.

“If this is what they spend on two small signs, the rest of their spending needs investigation.

“I will be writing to the National Audit Office asking them to investigate this issue on a national scale.

“Not only has the Highways Agency quoted sky high figures for work, but they are also not listening to the needs of local residents and this needs to change.”

Wisbech St Mary’s parish councillor John Fish said: “All we need is two signs saying there is a left turn and a right for Linden’s Close.

“I thought it would be £1,000 at most, it’s absolutely barmy.”

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: “We suggested that a less expensive alternative might be for the village hall to erect a direction sign on their own land, subject to local planning approvals.

“Safety is our top priority. Warning signs are not normally provided for accesses off a trunk road for facilities such as village halls.

“There are no safety grounds to justify warning signs. Nor is there justification for signing to direct traffic from the trunk road.

“Although we see no need for the signs, we were asked by Steve Barclay to provide an estimated cost.

“The quoted cost of £30,000 could eventually be less, but to calculate the cost more exactly would require detailed study. Funding that cannot be justified, as we do not consider there to be a need for the signs.”

I heard a few days ago, about the donate button on sites. The person suggested that anyone who could influence the public in a detrimental way was given money. It works on a very subtle level, someone could be telling the public "We will ascend next week" or " We are all doomed" or "Let's look for aliens" or "We should have more political correctness" or ...well basically getting people to conform to a stereotype. New age is probably high on their list!

The point is there 'is' money flying around everywhere like 'wind power' which is totally useless, but make someone a lot of money! In Kent there is a huge wind farm, does it make electricity cheaper.....NO!

I am amazed at how much money the government spend overseas, and yet the old and sick in this country are totally ignored. The rich get richer, and the poor pay for it! It makes one wonder if this plan to widen the gap between rich and poor is done on purpose to disrupt social order.

Also, what sort of tendering process is involved when these contracts for courses are given to Common Purpose? Are other training companies allowed to compete to provide leadership training courses?
Ask your councillors what is the benefit to YOU, the tax-payer, of these courses. (There isn't any benefit to the tax-payer of these Common Purpose courses.) What assessments/results of the courses are put into writing? (Answer: none.) Why are these courses so expensive? Are they value for money? (Of course not.)
Is this money well-spent? (No, of course not.) Could all these thousands of pounds have been spent more wisely instead of being wasted on Common Purpose courses? (Yes... either your money could be better spent or YOUR taxes could be reduced.)
Find out if Common Purpose is given any free accommodation or services by the local council.
If you suspect behind-the-scenes corrupt deals going on in your council, see if you can find a common factor... all the people concerned may well be Common Purpose 'graduates'. Hidden public service cuts will drain Britain's poorest families of 30 per cent of their annual income by 2017, as the coalition's tough spending targets begin to bite, new TUC research reveals.
It said reductions in benefits and family tax credits, combined with continuing cuts to welfare, will 'cause considerable financial harm for millions of families'.

The dire predictions come as chancellor George Osborne prepares to deliver his autumn statement on December 5, in which he is expected to detail a further £10bn of welfare savings over the next five years.

'Unless George Osborne changes course,' the TUC warned. 'These cuts will be dwarfed by massive reductions in public services.'
Their figures revealed that by 2016-17, the cumulative cost of lost public services for the poorest ten per cent of household will be £3,995 in cash terms - or 31.7 per cent of their average annual income.

By contrast, the top tenth of the income scale will lose just £2,805 - or 2.5 per cent of annual income.
This is because higher earners may use public transport less frequently, opt out of public schooling or healthcare, and less likely to rely on Sure Start centres.
The analysis also said that the average household had already lost more than £1,200 in public services but the real pain is still to come - this is just a third of the cuts they are likely to experience by 2014-2015.

The TUC report coincided with a study by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation which found that 6.1m people in working households live in poverty and more than 5.1m people live in working age households where no one has a job.
Julia Unwin, the foundation's chief executive, told The Observer: 'The most distinctive characteristic of poverty today is the very high number of working people who are also poor.'

Alison Garnham, chief executive of the Child Poverty Action Group, added: 'We are hearing reports from welfare rights advisers up and down the country that the services they provide are being cut or closed down.
'So a perfect storm is brewing: benefit cuts, service cuts and large-scale welfare reform.'

George Osborne could be forced to put VAT up to 25 per cent to cut the deficit, economists suggest today.

George Osborne will need £23 billion of tax rises or spending cuts to meet his fiscal mandate unless the economy improves, the IFS says

Weak economic growth and lower than expected tax payments have left a hole in the Chancellor’s plans that may need to be filled by higher taxes or further cuts to public spending, the Institute for Fiscal Studies said.

Even under the most “optimistic” forecast, the Chancellor will miss his target for debt to fall between 2015 and 2016 and should abandon the goal, the IFS said.

But a more pessimistic assessment suggests that Mr Osborne will also fail to achieve his key “fiscal mandate”, which is to balance the budget within five years, the IFS said.

The respected think-tank issues its projections today, as Coalition leaders prepare to finalise the details of the Autumn Statement, which the Chancellor will make next month.
Mr Osborne is said to be ready to delay a planned 3p increase in fuel duty after protests from Tory backbenchers, while senior Liberal Democrats are demanding fresh taxes on the wealthy.

In a new report, the IFS warned Mr Osborne that “the outlook for the public finances has worsened” since the Budget in March.

High rates of government borrowing this year mean there is almost no chance that Mr Osborne will meet his target for debt to fall as a share of national income between 2015 and 2016, the IFS said.

His core “fiscal mandate”, to be on course to balance the budget over a rolling five-year period, is also in jeopardy.
If the current weak growth and low tax receipts are permanent, the Chancellor will need another £23 billion of tax rises or spending cuts to be on course to meet his mandate by 2018, the report said.
The think-tank said this would be “roughly equivalent to increasing the main rate of VAT from 20 per cent to 25 per cent”, or imposing even deeper welfare cuts than announced so far.

Mr Osborne will deliver his Autumn Statement on December 5.
David Cameron will join the Chancellor today for talks with Nick Clegg and Danny Alexander, the Lib Dem chief secretary to the Treasury, to agree the key announcements before details are set to the government’s independent forecasters at the Office for Budget Responsibility this week.

A Treasury spokesman said: “Action taken by the Government has cut the deficit by a quarter, whilst over a million new jobs have been created in the private sector, inflation is down, and the economy is healing.

I am not experiencing things in that magnitude here in Belgium.
