Colombian authorities confirmed that a "giant fire ball" that fell from the sky in the central Santander department was a meteorite.

Ni víctimas, ni daños materiales se reportaron inicialmente por este fenómeno. La caída más reciente de un objeto extraterrestre sobre el país fue en el centro del Valle el 6 de julio de 2007.

Por otra parte habitantes de Cucutilla y Arboleda en Norte de Santander dijeron que también avistaron un objeto parecido a una bola de fuego de color azul. Aseguran además que hubo una fuerte detonación a la caída de lo que puede ser un bólido.

Un controlador aéreo de la torre de control del aeropuerto Camilo daza Dijo que vio el objeto incandescente hacia el occidente de Cúcuta. Las autoridades reportaron que habitantes del municipio de Toledo también sintieron una fuerte explosión y avistaron un objeto raro que cruzó el cielo. Las instituciones de socorro no han reportado personas lesionadas ni daños en viviendas.

Habitantes de Bogotá también vieron el objeto volador

En la capital del país se conocieron testimonios de personas que dicen haber visto el objeto volador, afirman que fue como una estrella incandescente que pasó fugaz por el cielo capitalino. Manifestaron que a primera vista pensaron que se trataba de la cola de un avión que brillaba y descendía a gran velocidad.

El meteorito caído sería un bólido

Un bólido es una clase de meteorito cuya luminosidad es superior a la del planeta Venus. No es la primera vez que un fenómeno de este tipo se presenta en Colombia.

Los meteoritos o aerolitos, que traducen “fenómeno del cielo”, son cuerpos menores del Sistema Solar que llegan a la superficie de un planeta, porque no se desintegran por completo en la atmósfera. Con la fricción del aire el cuerpo se calienta y emite una luz que se denomina “bola de fuego” o “estrella fugaz”.

Algunos de los meteoritos estudiados al parecer provenían de la Luna o de Marte, sin embargo, la mayoría son fragmentos de asteroides o comentas. Se dice que a diario varios fenómenos de este tipo caen a la Tierra, pero terminan pesando pocos miligramos. Los meteoritos se nombran siempre de acuerdo en el lugar en el que fueron encontrados.

En Colombia existen registros oficiales y no oficiales. Se habla de una lluvia de meteoritos en Santa Rosa de Viterbo, Boyacá, que ocurrió el Viernes Santo de 1810. Otros aerolitos habrían caído en Pitalito, Huila en 1997, en El Peñol Antioquia en 2005, en 9 municipios de Valle en 2007 y en Duitama, Boyacá, el 2 de enero de este año.

Gobernador de Santander, Horacio Serpa dijo haber escuchado la explosión
