UK to name part of Antarctica Queen Elizabeth Land
18 December 2012 Last updated at 14:07 GMT

Part of Antarctica is to be named Queen Elizabeth Land in honour of the Queen, it was announced as she made a historic visit to Downing Street.

She is the first monarch since 1781 - during the US war of independence - to attend a cabinet meeting.

She met ministers, who gave her a set of 60 place mats, to mark her Diamond Jubilee after 60 years on the throne.

The Queen joined the cabinet while they were updated on a range of forthcoming parliamentary business.

After leaving Downing Street she went with Foreign Secretary William Hague to the Foreign Office, where it was announced that the southern part of the British Antarctic Territory had been named.

The territory, covering 169,000 sq miles - almost twice the size of the UK - was previously unnamed, the Foreign Office said.

"This is a fitting tribute at the end of Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee year, and I am very proud to be able to announce it as she visits the Foreign and Commonwealth Office," Mr Hague said. ....

The article covers the historic presence of the Queen at this meeting as well as the historic presence of the UK in Antarctica.

Problem is...who owns Antarctica?

http://www.antarctica.gov.au/about-antarctica/people-in-antarctica/who-owns-antarctica

And what was the Antarctic Treaty exactly?

http://www.ats.aq/e/ats.htm

Among the signatories of the Treaty were seven countries - Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, New Zealand, Norway and the United Kingdom - with territorial claims , sometimes overlapping. Other countries do not recognize any claims. The US and Russia maintain a “basis of claim”. All positions are explicitly protected in Article IV, which preserves the status quo:

No acts or activities taking place while the present Treaty is in force shall constitute a basis for asserting , supporting or denying a claim to territorial sovereignty in Antarctica or create any rights of sovereignty in Antarctica. No new claim, or enlargement of an existing claim to territorial sovereignty in Antarctica shall be asserted while the present Treaty is in force.

The Foreign Office said there was a precedent - there was already a Princess Elizabeth Land in East Antarctica, which was named after the Queen before she took the throne, and in 2006 an unnamed mountain range in the Antarctic peninsula was named the Princess Royal Range in tribute to the Queen's daughter.
At the cabinet meeting, the Queen sat in the PM's usual seat - with Mr Cameron and Mr Hague sitting on either side of her. It is believed to be the first time a monarch has attended peace-time cabinet since George III in 1781. George I ceased to chair cabinet in 1717. The Queen's father, King George VI, attended war cabinet during the Second World War.

The cabinet, which usually meets weekly, is the group of 20-30 senior ministers who are responsible for running the departments of state and decide government policyHer car, accompanied by motorcycle outriders, arrived shortly after 10:05 GMT. Members of the cabinet had already arrived, while a man with a broom had swept the red carpet, laid in front of the door of Number 10 for the occasion.

Jokes

Once inside, the Queen was introduced to each of the government's senior ministers in turn, as they bowed or curtseyed.

She shared jokes with Chancellor George Osborne, Defence Secretary Philip Hammond, and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.

The cabinet gave the Queen a set of 60 place mats
After the Queen and the cabinet had taken their seats, Mr Cameron formally welcomed her to the meeting and outlined the items of business on the agenda.

It began with Chief Whip Sir George Young talking about the change to royal succession rules, to allow a first-born girl to become head of state even if she has a younger brother.

There were also updates on the forthcoming parliamentary business and Ken Clarke spoke about prospective justice measures. There was a much larger than usual press pack opposite No 10, although no questions were shouted at the Queen as she arrived.

'Constitutional landmark'

While the Queen is head of state, her involvement in day-to-day political decisions is largely formal. The prime minister visits her regularly for an audience where he updates her on events, while she is also expected to rubber-stamp ministerial decisions at meetings of the Privy Council.

Something just does not settle with me on this Antartica thang being the Queens reason for attending a meeting of her "directors".
The Queen is now head of the United Nations and her state role in the UK has changed, regretfully am unsure how that change plays out; so why did she not revel the courtiership of the UN which would be more appropriate?
Are there any British Constitutionalists here that can throw some more light on this? Many thanks.

Maybe she needed the place mats?

Queen elizabeth land is annoying. Can't we move past this royalist nature, and this praise she gets, maybe i can't see it, but never has she or any royals been an influence or inspiration in the 20th and 21st centuries. Someday, there will not be a place for royalty to exist in this world. Its placing status and wealth above others, no matter how you look at it.

What a ridiculous joke - totally Absurd. No one owns Antartica so they can't name it. Countries try to stake a "claim" but the Antartic Treaty prevents ownership and claims are not recognised by other countries.

It is for peaceful and scientific purposes only and no military activity or weapons are allowed. 50 nations have agreed to the Treaty and have bases in Antartica

Treaty here: http://www.ats.aq/e/ats.htm

It states: "in the interest of all mankind that Antarctica shall continue for ever to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes and shall not become the scene or object of international discord." http://www.ats.aq/index_e.htm

No taxes there I guess

A toaster would be no use. One hears that she has cornflakes for breakfast, kept in a tupperware box

Those 60 placemats will come in handy to build her a shelter.

This QE2 PR job feels like a threat ( or a case of keeping close to the constitutional apparatus ).

Something must have spooked her recently.

Perhaps the Ben Fulford stuff is closer to the mark than we realise.

edit:

Could be flexing her muscles to show people inside her own intel network that she's still the boss and still has incredible constitutional powers she can dust off and get down and dirty with.

Any flaky secret service operatives should tremble.....ORFF WITH THEIR HEADS !

If something of this sort IS going on, it's a sign she's actually getting really scared, for the first time in her life.

Her instinct to want to bark ruthless commands may be surfacing, as a reaction to her very real fear for her and her family's future ( and lives ).

edit2:

Are we about to have King Charles?

Drat, I'll have to spend my stash of paper money with Liz's head on it.
