Apparently Volkswagen has a vision where the market is heading and isn't wasting any time... well done...
Makes the smart car ... well... look stupid...(teehee)

Unfortunately the $600 price was a rumor. There are a couple websites stating that the price will be closer to US $26,000.
The car still looks extremely cool!

Zero to 60 in 87 seconds!
I'm a car guy... I'll pass on this death trap on wheels.. might as well curl up in the center of the road and put on some tinfoil.

Wow, there's no room for the kids or the partner! I like it because no-one would want to car-jack me or steal it! They should increase the fuel tank from 1.5 gallons though...

Yeah it doesn't look that safe when you consider that most cars and especially SUV's would literally crush that vehicle (and occupant) underneath them.
Now, I would be very excited if we would have alternative roadways just for small vehicles such as that, similar to bike routes.

If it had a larger gas tank it could explode when the neighbor's kid ran into it with his tricycle. ;)

that does sound too good to be true...
re: safety... gotta live a little can't be any more dangerous then a motorcycle... and and safety is in the driver's ability, not the vehicle...
compared to 30 mpg say to 250 mpg, imagine if the whole country decreased gas consumption by a factor of 8, that would change the economy in a month... these vehicles will definitely find a niche in the market, hopefully that price will come down then, maybe the $600 was the cost of manufacturing it and the $26,000 is the corporate sticker price (hey gotta make a profit right!)

Bad idea making that thing the same colour as the road...
Otherwise a great vehicle. Can't be any more dangerous than this:

Agreed. It doesn't always matter if you're driving safe because there's always crazy drivers to watch out for.
On another note; it's kind of ironic I educate myself on alternative energy but I drive a V8 in a 20 year old Lincoln.

I like contrast, I have a truck with a 6.2L V8 (450hp) and my electric motorcycle (5.7kWh, 44hp).
I drive the loudest, and the quietest vehicles on this island.... haha

I used to drive a 73 nazi death wagon, her name was pumkin and she drank more oil than gas.

Unfortunately, it probably can't pass the emissions control tests and will be banned in the US :p

Dang! This would be a great alternative for the daily commute. I know it couldn't be used for most things, but just to get from point A to point B, it doesn't get much more efficient then this. Id buy one, just to take it apart, recreate it, and sell it for a much more modest price.

The problem with those "small" cars is that you still need insurance and unfortunately it is not that much less than average sedan. I've been looking for alternative/green ways of getting from A to B (short commutes). I found that electric assist bicycles are the way to go. You can convert a bike for about $1K that will go 45km/h. I can still charge it at work for free and there is no registration and insurance cost. The beauty of those type of bikes is that you can choose to pedal at any time and save the battery. It's an adjustment but when you try it, you'll love it.
I'm currently converting a beach cruiser out of Wamart. So far, I changed the front wheel with heavy duty aluminum rim that has drum brake in the front with dynamo that will power my front and rear lights. There is a lot of effort that goes into a production of this type of a bicycle. The problem I'm facing is that when I'm done with it, how to I make sure it's not stolen. When someone wants it, they will steel it no matter the type of anti theft device utilized.
