109 years ago the Wright brothers celebrated their first flight. The corporate space
travel group Space-X celebrated it with the launch of its highest test rocket to date,
the Grasshopper. The Grasshopper is a fully controllable and reusable first-stage
launch vehicle for future trips to orbit and beyond. RT's Liz Wahl explains.

Private Spaceship Builders Split $30 Million in NASA Funds
by SPACE.com Staff
Date: 10 December 2012 Time: 07:13 PM ET
Colorado-based Sierra Nevada got an even $10 million to continue work on its Dream Chaser space plane. Texas-based Boeing got $9.99 million for its CST-100 capsule, while SpaceX (headquartered in Hawthorne, Calif.) received $9.59 million to keep upgrading its unmanned Dragon capsule to carry crew. [Now Boarding: The Top 10 Private Spaceships]
NASA hopes at least one of these vehicles will be ready to carry astronauts to low-Earth orbit by 2017. The United States has lacked a homegrown manned capability since NASA's space shuttle fleet retired in July 2011; it currently relies on Russian Soyuz spacecraft to do the job.
"These contracts represent important progress in restoring human spaceflight capabilities to the United States," Phil McAlister, director of NASA's Commercial Spaceflight Development Division, said in a statement. "NASA and its industry partners are committed to the goal of safely and cost-effectively launching astronauts from home within the next five years."
The CPC Phase 1 contracts run from Jan. 22, 2013 through May 30, 2014, NASA officials said. During this period, the three companies will work with the Commercial Crew Program to draw up certification plans. These plans will implement NASA's safety and performance requirements across all aspects of the transportation system, from the spacecraft to the launch vehicle and ground operations.
CPC Phase 2, which is expected to begin in mid-2014, will include the final development and verifications necessary to allow manned test flights to the space station. This second contract phase will involve a full and open competition, officials said.
The newly announced $30 million is just the latest in a series of commercial crew awards granted by NASA over the last few years. In 2010, the agency granted a total of $50 million to five companies, including Boeing and Sierra Nevada. Boeing, Sierra Nevada and SpaceX split $315 million in 2011 and $1.1 billion in another round of awards announced this past August.

I always wanted to take a ride in space. I'd love to have my ashes released in space when my time comes. That would rule. It's on the list of things I'd love but ain't ever gonna happen.

Is Bigelow Aircraft Co involved as well? I've been hearing that name recently. Something about being a repository for UFO reports? I'm not sure if that is fact yet...thanks

Goodness me, this is prime Disney.
Sooo, we can now take a trip into space by an ever increasing number of Corps building all sorts of "petrol" driven chuffers, taking space cadets into near space for the ew-ah experience, probably selling post cards and tee shirts as well. Pleaseee:-)
The Moon, the Moon, what about the Moon?
Am sorry, but am I the only one that see's this as a big racket?
Why are we not sending fleets of drones taking in depth photographs, science measuring, drilling and other investigative devices and putting on global public display?
It would be cheaper and would raise revenue as well. They do it for Mars robots, fat lot of good that is - toys 4 us 4 geeks - hogwash, bunkum and wasteful.

No its a racket .... another diversion, send wealthy tourists to near space, keep them well away from the ' Secret space corp Stuff '.....
Keeps the mainstream and the sheeple quite a bit longer !! and NASA is still in charge.

BINGBINGBINGBING!!!!!!!! JACKPOT!!!!!!
Scary thing is, everything onwards to awnsering that question, will be speculation, spin, mis/disinfo.
Small edit,
Mojo has a nice compilation of video's on the ufo thread and almost everything in the compilation seems to have (imo) a large organic/energetic component to it, seems like space is just another ocean after all, and we cant know that.

Apparently Robert Bigelows Genesis 1 & 2 are already orbiting earth.

Fly the final descent into Las Vegas in a commercial airliner and the famous Strip looms into view. A 4.2-mile stretch of glitz and glamour, it is the world's most renowned gambling center.
In neighboring North Las Vegas, Robert Bigelow, 66, is making a gamble of his own. He is willing to risk up to $500 million of his personal wealth on developing the world's first commercial space station.
A visionary who also finances paranormal and UFO research, Bigelow made a fortune building and renting tens of thousands of extended stay apartments and hotel rooms in Nevada, Arizona and Texas.
Suites of America.
Nicknamed "Mr. B," Bigelow branched out into aerospace in 1999, raising a super-secretive aerospace research and development center on a 50-acre plot that affords beautiful views of the Vegas skyline.
Armed security guards escort visitors down Skywalker Way to a 161,000-square-foot complex that houses manufacturing, fabrication and testing facilities, a giant neutral buoyancy lab, a ground station for spacecraft communications and a Mission Control Center.

Inside an industrial warehouse known as Building A, two flights of grated black metal stairs lead to a conference room and Bigelow's modest office, which looks out over a shop floor and Mission Control.
A tall, trim, mustachioed man, Bigelow peers down on his vision of the future: huge commercial space station modules that look like giant Jet-Puffed Marshmallows.
Made with puncture-proof fabric that can be folded up to fit in the nosecone of a rocket, and then expanded in orbit, the inflatable modules can be linked together to form space complexes.
Bigelow licensed the technology from NASA and launched two prototypes aboard Russian rockets in 2006 and 2007.
The Genesis I and Genesis II modules are orbiting Earth today, traveling at 17,500 mph.
"We hope to build a number of commercial space stations, not just one or two. We'd like to have 10 or 15 or 20. We think the markets are substantial, so that's exactly what we're trying to accomplish," Bigelow said.

Robert Bigelow, the donald trump of space, already has two floating hotels or whatever they really are, the mainstream is in the dark or kept us in the dark about this until now.. hmmmm. a new wing of the rabbit hole has just been opened... we are gonna need everyone on this one. this is big. Humanity living in space under bigelow's thumb. I mean , a buget hotel owner one ups the government and nasa putting two floating factories/labs in space bigger that the space station ?????? and planning to send more ?? I own a chain of BUDGET hotels, and I go right past Nasa into space with something bigger than the joint ISS .... ???????????? and the government defers to me on UFO sightings ?????? I own MUFON ?????? something goes wrong in space , now there is a fall guy not connected to government or elected by the people... how could you profit from a floating hotel that is gonna need air, water, restrooms, food, electricity, and all sorts of things ????? could this be the escape pods for the ptb ?? Uncle Sam would not turn over all UFO sightings and info to one man... No Way. something about this is so fishy ....

I agree with ghostrider. The whole thing just doesn't sound right.... Honestly, why not try to get us out of our outdated technologies first? There is so much more that could be done first. The cosmos isn't going anywhere, so there's time to improve life on Earth.... So, I'm feeling my conspiracy juices bubbling up. What are these people not telling us....? One thing's for sure, this Bigelow is a spooky dude..

I agree this does not feel right.........
The opening up of space like any previous frontier on earth has
always been a combination of government & private money.
Private companies suply NASA with much of the material
they use already. As with the military and any other branch
of government. This still feels odd unless you take the space
military into account, which makes more sence letting private
firms fly tourists around in low orbit or to a, Hotel floating
about up there for the 1% to have somewhere else to brag
about going to .....LOL...
SpaceLiner point to point space travel

The SpaceLiner is a project of the German Aerospace Center DLR (www.dlr.de).
The SpaceLiner is an all rocket powered vehicle which should one day be able to
transport fifty passengers from Australia to Europe in 90 minutes. The SpaceLiner
follows a suborbital trajectory through space, thus allowing ultra fast point to point
travel as a possible extention of the purely suborbital space tourism concepts.
