Ray McGovern, a former CIA officer, writes about Katharine Gun and Thomas Fingar, recent winners of the Sam Adams Award for Integrity in Intelligence (yes, there is such a thing!). Ten years ago Ms. Gun, a young British intel officer, saw an email from the NSA that confirmed her suspicion that the US and UK were about to launch war against Iraq on false pretenses. She leaked it to the London Observer at great personal risk in order to prevent a bloody war.
Thomas Fingar, who led the U.S. National Intelligence Council from 2005 to 2008, drafted the National Intelligence Estimate of 2007 on Iran, which reported that Iran had stopped working on a nuclear weapon in 2003, defying previous estimates.
