Meet the experts who monitor the behaviour of the Yellowstone supervolcano. They face the awesome responsibility of predicting when the next super-eruption might next take place -- and advising on what will happen when it does.

Hey Badbob,
have you heard of a Verneshot? It has to do with tectonic plates and volcanoes!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verneshot
A verneshot (named after French author Jules Verne) is a hypothetical volcanic eruption event caused by the buildup of gas deep underneath a craton. Such an event may be forceful enough to launch an extreme amount of material from the crust and mantle into a sub-orbital trajectory.
some scientists think a volcano could launch the plate it's on into space!

I listened to Cliff High on the other thread.
He claims Yellow stone a spent force and could never erupt as a super volcano again
Im not technically minded enough to remember his reasoning but he seemed very definite and authoritative.
The talk is worth a listen---if a bit end of parts of the world though.

The video has been blocked by the BBC---copyright issues---pity it would have been good to see.
Horizon BBC did a great documentary years ago on Yellowstone.
This might be the first part

To the best of my memory it was found that there was a bottle neck in the civilization ---a dramatic drop in the number of people on earth---a near extinction event. The way they came to that conclusion was fascinating---down to female genes mutating if I remember correctly.

I read something recently about a woman from the Ice Age who could hunt mammoths, see in the dark, and on top of that, she carried the genes for this on the X chromosome.
they call her X woman after the comic book, lol! crazy huh?
thank you for this.
mass extinction has been on my mind for about 3 years now. hope there is no reason for that.
