I spent a great deal of my life oblivious to the fact cancer is simply an enormous business making thousands of people wealthy beyond belief. After having three operations I was told..........."you have cancer". I started to search for every cure I could find on cancer, I started to research every doctor that had a decent reputation in surgical oncology in the United States. I looked into every aspect of alternative medicines. I went to clinic after clinic, Johns Hopkins, University of NC at Chapel Hill, Mayo Clinic to name just a few. I finally decided to be treated at Duke University in NC.
I was blown away by the size and the number of people in the waiting rooms, a small waiting room would hold 150 people, a large one had 200-300 people waiting for a diagnosis or treatment. It made no difference which day of the week or what hour of the day I was there, every single room was filled without exception, every time I went. I began to think........why would any of these people want to cure cancer, it is paying a lot of mortgages, putting a lot of food on the table and paying for a lot of vacation homes for those making the most. Then there are the clinics, the hospitals, the pharmaceutical companies, the hotels close to hospitals, restaurants near these facilities, taxi's catering exclusively to these patients, there is an endless parade of companies making their living off cancer. On top of all that there is the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institute of Health (NIH) overseeing everything. They too have a vested interest in keeping this cancer money train on the track.
I have spoken to doctors, researchers, and medical professionals and they will all tell you that there are cures for cancers that are being held up by the government. Many will openly tell you that they do not expect the government to approve these "cures" in their lifetime. They will never come out and say it is a conspiracy, they all say it is "just how the system works".
When you spend your life standing outside of the cancer world peeking in (as I did) and then without any advance warning you are thrust inside of the cancer world looking out, your perspective quickly changes and clarity of the issues is immediate and amazing. After all its about life and death and it is your life.
So when I see a story like this, a 15 year old kid does what an army of medical professionals could not (or would not do) in a very short period of time I pay attention, it confirms my sense of why advances in cancer cures and treatments have been dragging on forever. The story is so sensational that the mainstream media can not ignore it, they cannot put it on page 28 of the style section of the NY Times. Even once the story goes public the government could hold up this method of diagnosing patients for years or even decades in medical/government red tape. Lets hope that does not happen. Lets not let it happen!
It is up to us to demand more, especially from the government. They are the ones controlling every aspect of the cancer world. You won't see them, you won't even hear about them when cancer is discussed but make no mistake they are the wizard behind the curtain controlling treatments, drugs, procedures and ultimately the cures. If we don't make noise or take action we can expect more of the same and that is unacceptable.
Also for those interested, I am finally cancer free, it took some alternative medicines, more operations, even an amputation. I truly believe the best prevention is keeping a positive attitude and a positive outlook on life. Oh yes..........I can have an edge, even get pissed off as long as it comes from something I am passionate about, it actually feels good. Otherwise life is a mysteriously wonderful and I enjoy living it everyday.
Here is the story about Jack, our 15 year old! (Sorry for being so long winded)
Jack Andraka is a fifteen year old freshman in high school. He developed a paper sensor that could detect pancreatic, ovarian and lung cancer in five minutes for as little as 3 cents. He conducted his research at John Hopkins University. This research could change the face of cancer and promote early detection. To think that scientists spending millions of dollars to find more about cancer, a 15 year old finds out by doing a science fair project! Jack's method is 168 times faster, 26,000 times cheaper, 400 times more sensitive and has a 90% success rate.
