PICK OF THE WEEK: Two for Two

The Sun blasted out two modest-sized coronal mass ejections (CMEs) into space over a two-day period (Sept. 13-14, 2010). SOHO captured the action with its C2 coronagraph in which the sun is blocked out (by the circular occulting disk in the center of the image) to reveal the faint structures in the corona. The white circle represents the size of the Sun. With no apparent eruptions on the Earth-facing side of the Sun, and some signs of events in STEREO Ahead and Behind spacecraft (that observe portions of the Sun which spacecraft like SOHO and SDO cannot), both these events must have been directed away from Earth.
