Well it is here, Google Censorship, Google has made it so that it's internet browser while searching for images has a default safe feature that can't be changed.
So what exactly does this mean?
Well it means that say you wanted to search the web for breasts, etc or other images, google has made it so that you can't access most of the data base.
Now I understand some people out there ....will say...." Well human's should not be looking at graphic images, or that kind of data"
But the bigger question is, is why does Google feel they have the need to Censor the world's information highway?
Think of the bigger picture here " What else are people who pay to have internet access not permitted to see?
I have switched to "Bing" as my internet browser and I am hoping that more public attention will be drawn to this in America.
Google should be boycotted. Shame on you Google! Boo.

Well, no, it doesn't mean that :).
Which portion of the image database you get for which searches changed a couple of months ago, as explained in the link you provided.
You can still, so far as I can tell, access all their images. What you get for various combinations of search words and search settings changed a few months back.
To say it "exactly" means "that you can't access most of the data base" is exactly wrong ... sorry :).

Really Paul
Try this then
Open up a google search engine example : https://www.google.ca/
Next click on the images tap at the top
Now type in the word "****" (slang word for vagina) or "cock"
and hit return
We are adults here Paul and this is about information.

Really Paul
Yes, really :).
Read the link you so kindly provided.
With safe search turned off, I now get very different image results from "xxx udder" (these results Not Safe For Work) than I get from "udder". The former images are human porn, the latter images are cow's udders.
I just changed the title of this thread from
Google Censorship is alive and well and has come to America Internet Browser Censorship Here
to
Google image search preferences in America changed
The original thread title was, I'm convinced, inaccurate and overly sensational.

So do what ever you wish ....i am just stating what I have encountered.

Turn off safe search and try the two examples I gave in my previous post.
Oh ... and I just censored the image you added to your post ... :)

Kind of ironic don't you think Paul. ;)
I post a thread about internet censorship and you sensor the title, censor my images.
Thank you for providing an excellent example of censorship

Hi Vitalux,
I just tried this from the UK, and I can see that the way Google are implementing this has changed. However, it does look like you can go into your settings to free this up. If you have kids you might think this is a good idea. I'll have a go to see how easy it is to change the setting.

You're welcome :).
(Your title was wrong, and your image was soft porn serving no purpose.)

get my google off of safe search
Try a google search for "get my google off of safe search", which will bring up various links pointing to instructions on how to do this.

Disable the SafeSearch filter
Here's how to disable SafeSearch:
Visit the Google Preferences page. http://www.google.com/preferences
In the "SafeSearch Filtering" section, uncheck Filter explicit results.
Click Save Preferences.
Disabling SafeSearch is a "sticky" setting; SafeSearch will stay off for future visits until you turn it back on.
Firewalls, proxies, and anti-virus programs are often configured to periodically delete cookies. If you are accessing Google Images from behind one of these programs (such as on a corporate network), you may have to reset your preferences periodically. Contact your IT professional if you'd like to try to alter your firewall or proxy situation.
Note that it's possible for your internet service provider (ISP) or network administrator to override your SafeSearch setting. If you find that your setting is not reflected in the search results you see, contact your ISP or network administrator for more information.

Hi Vitalux,
I think I can see what you mean. It now only seems to say "Safe Search" or "Safe Search On".
So the question is this - does "Safe Search" mean "Safe Search Off"?
And I agree with you that if that is the case, the results look quite "Safe" under both settings.
Interesting... my first thought was that you might not know how to set the settings, but you might have a point.
Let's see what others think.

To disable safe searching even when one's search terms include explicitly unsafe terms (e.g. "xxx udder") go to http://www.google.com/preferences and turn off the check on the box under "Safesearch results" for "Filter explicit results"
(This just repeats what bmdb said above.)

Hi Paul,
Yes I can see that I am searching with Safe Search Off with those settings. I think it just looks different than it used to look with the "Safe Search <" label showing which actually means "Safe Search Off" when you don't have the filtering ticked.
I see both sides of your discussion :)
And almost definitely Google are steering what images are shown whether you have this setting "on" or "off" - but that is probably for another thread...

Yes, it's changed. Even with Safe Search Off, searches that don't explicitly request x-rated images do not get x-rated images. It used to be that ambiguous searches, such as for "udders", got a mix of x-rated and bovine-rated images. Now such searches just get bovine-rated images, and one has to add an explicit search term, such as "xxx", to get the x-rated stuff.

I did not know that udder would work for porn stuff in English. Can't believe it.... always learning something new, which will be mostly useless to me, unless wanting to know what teenagers are doing on the internet - cause they will know much before Vitalux how to change the setting. Already too old to look at porn Vitalux, cannot set up the computer, does not look good. :p
On a more serious note, I heard that google had changed their whole search algorithms to be able to have them tailoring our personal choices/tastes for one, and most probably but not said, to be able to censor. Presently I am often pushed results that are locals or in French (i am from a french province), even when requesting English words. I now have to precise the language sometimes in the search bar and the location ex: udder, english USA. Same on youtube. When I do that maybe 10-15 times, it reverts to English searches. Then I make 10 searches in French, it reverts to French. Quite bothersome as a matter of fact, when you want both languages or just one. Google seems to be always checking for my preferences, in their adds too. I really dislike the fact that they know me. youtube always shows me conspiracy stuff as a preference. Hate it.

I sympathize Flash. Which is why I try to keep a wide range of interests, so that they don't know quite what to make of me. :)

thank you .....
No matter what I do, I can't stop google from censoring my search. Which again backs up my original statement in my original post.
I am 51 and have very strong computer skills, so ignorance of knowing how to disable this function is not the issue.
Rather you turn it on or off ..makes no difference ....it still filters and censors what you can see. I am just the messenger telling the news...so don't kill the messenger.
I just want to point out that this is not about our ability to search around for Porn, but I am using this example to explicitly show that there are things are the net that Google will not let you see.
I have no idea why Paul is being able to access porn images from Google because no one else that I have chatted with is able to.
Once again, to the bible belt people, this is not a thread about porn or graphic images, it is about how censorship has changed.
Any words or images that I have shown on here, would be no different than if you turn on your television or watched most American movies.
We should be able to talk about adult issues without having to feel that we are encased in a kindergarten type of limits on our speech or ability to view images.
*edit* ok I see what Paul was talking about ....now you have to type in "XXX" to get pat the filter

Flash, you might want to try this recommendation
http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?49073-Anonymous-internet-search-engine-STARTPAGE.com&highlight=startpage
I am using Startpage since I read this thread, it is not perfect but it is sufficient for most purposes, it uses the google search engine, but displays the results in no particular order, without any 'personal preferences' that google so 'generously' present, for your own service and convenience of course :p

I think having safe search and results filtering is a good idea.
I actually don't like getting porn on my screen by accident.
I once made the mistake of searching for latex gloves in the office (because I needed a new box), and the results were not what I had expected - and I had been lazy and just searched on latex.
When I do want porn on my screen, I do want it to be found and not censored :)
