The first time I heard it, it was a direct insult to the intelligence of any one who has intelligence worth mentioning.
Here is how you are to think, speak and act. You cant say this, you have to say it this way. You cant criticize even if it is obviously called for, even to protect the down trodden.
For instance, if you speak the truth as you see it regarding the Palestinians treatment by the Israelis it's made to sound like a crime.
(I really admire the Israelis who speak out about the injustices being done by their govt.)
Even American politicians can not say anything about the above or they are made to apologize or they will be 'gone.'
Political control of everyone's thinking and beliefs about what's happening and on and on, is absurd.
Incrementally it gets worse. Talk about sheeple.
No offense to anyone. I say it as I see it, regardless of where i'm talking about.
I chose Israel because to me it is so, blatant how could anyone miss it?
What do you honestly think?

Israel became what they profess to abhor in 1982 they committed the sin of sins- genocide.

There's a meme, who knows where it came from, it goes like this:
“Political correctness is a doctrine – fostered by a delusional, illogical minority and rapidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media – which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a piece of **** by the clean end.”
Doublespeak (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doublespeak) also comes to mind...
Of course it's no sign of genuine piousness to forbid questioning while pounding on "political correctness" or any other pseudo-lofty ideal.
“It is the right and the duty of everyone who seeks the truth to doubt, investigate and consider all available evidence. Wherever this doubting and investigating is forbidden; wherever authorities demand unquestioning belief, there is evidence of a profane arrogance, which arouses our suspicions. If those whose contentions are questioned had truth on their side, they would patiently answer all questions. Certainly they would not continue to conceal evidence and documents which pertain to the controversy. If those who demand belief are lying, however, they will call for a judge. By this ye shall know them. He who tells the truth is calm and composed, but he who lies demands worldly justice.” — Viktor Knirsch

Political correctness is a retarded construct.
Tsk tsk - it's a construct with "learning difficulties" ;)
Which leads nicely into my loathing of PC - It doesn't actually achieve the stated aims of its' adherents, namely to alter our perception and therefore prejudice. Go into a school playground and announce you are gay, the students won't all gather around and proclaim you as a happy-go-lucky, carefree, fun loving chap, they'll simply call you a gay bastard rather than a queer bastard.
Saying someone has "learning difficulties" doesn't assist them in any way, in fact it's rather condescending and insulting - all they need is a better teacher and they will be able to talk, feed themselves, clean themselves and lead normal lives.... Really ???
What are people who have difficulty learning a particular subject (like me and maths) supposed to say ? What are people who are truly gay supposed to now call themselves ?
As for the profusion of feminist led PC, all I can say is it's a shame they don't put as much effort into condemning barbaric practices like female "circumcision" as they do into attacking personal pronouns.

Hello East Sun, Good subject!
I must say the word Humane integrity and accountability.
These 2 key words must become across the world the non negotiable, non flexible action and expectation for any public office official.

Not a fan. Political correctness tends to skirt the issues. I'm sorry that was sexiest. IMO no matter how hard one tries to make an issue taboo, there is still an issue and it now has the mystique of being taboo. I guess not saying hurtful things just because they are hurtful is too much to wish for.

Wow that was pretty good memory Christian!
It was the Winning entry by a student from an annual contest from a few years ago, calling for the most appropriate definition of a contemporary term.
"Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical
liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream
media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to
pick up a turd by the clean end."
PC = Piece of Crap ;) - plaster it far and wide!:high5:

No that was not sexist, it was politically correct I'm afraid ;) (I suppose you were just kidding).
To skirt is to go round, as in 'skirting board'. Hence a piece of material that goes round a woman's legs is just one example of something skirting.
Political correctness ultimately would confiscate the whole language.

Yes ... Insult is in the intent and context --- PC is for those who can't figure those two things out so would rather avoid being descriptive or accurate than be "wrong" in determining them.
In my "example" of the word retarded - I was using the very literal definition which isn't even "learning difficulties" -- it means held back, to retard or be prevented from moving forward (often used to describe learning). Political correctness is the crappy band-aid solution for those who lack the communication skills to convey that which they intend, and to satisfy those who need to be offended to continue their victim role. In this sense -- it would seem it is a tool of politicians to help maintain fear and victim mentality in the masses. ;)

What does a wookiee know? But IMO, you nailed it. When someone pulls PC on me, I just muster up a massive fart and let it fly... then look at them.
When they get over the initial shock and ask, "Aren't you going to least say, 'Excuse me?'" I just look at them sending them the thought form, "I am not going to expose myself to the risk you might deem my words politically incorrect." And they are left with my Mona Lisa smile... hahaha.
Wookies are usually given a pass anyways.
