In this 10 min. interview, the faculty head of the Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering at the University of Texas discusses the idea that it's too late to stop climate change.
To paraphrase: It's going to happen anyway now. The only thing we still might be able to avoid is a peak oil crisis that will change society as we know it.
His key statement is that if we do not stop wasting our resources as we are, we are committing collective suicide within a generation. It's an interesting take from someone deep in the oil industry.

Where do I start with this? Peak Oil was supposed to happen by now, and it looks like oil is not finite, but if we drill deep into the earth there's a huge amount of oil. Is there any point arguing about oil when it's manipulated by OPEC (they cut supply to make it look finite). Now "Climate change" has been discredited because the climate changes every day. Yikes...I think it is not a good idea to dismiss outright the idea that resources are limited, and possibly more relevant--that using them like they are is not dangerous if not suicidal.

And discerning "climate change" from the "tipping point" of CO2 in the atmosphere...that may not be a bad idea either.

Those terms (peak oil, climate change, etc) are emotionally charged, and instantly cause a black/white, right/wrong, "facts" based argument. Experience tells me that it is not a good to act as if anything is infinite, and semantics should not be justification for continuing to destroy our environment...

I'm not worried about "climate change"...I'm worried about my state being under the Atlantic Ocean and/or starvation. I'm not worried about "running out of oil", I am worried about the point where it costs more than a barrel of oil to extract one....just sayin'

We're not running out of oil anytime soon. We'll just run out of cheap oil, and expend more and more other resources like water and nat. gas to get it out of the ground. There's only a fixed amount in there.

Climate change according to Firestone et al (Cycles of Cosmic Catastrophy) is well, cyclical, comes round with regular monotony. As well as the fact that other parts of the solar system seem to be suffering the same changes in their own way. How soon are they going to start blaming us for changes happening accross the universe, for sure they will find something to hike the prices even more. Personally I do try to keep my footprint on the earth as light as possible regardless, even though I fail often.
I imagine oil to be the blood of the earth, and I am not certain oil is finite in the long term, but it could be at the rate we are bleeding it out.
