I believe there still are good people in the world. This just proves that we all need to know first aid and cpr. You never know if it will happen to you next.
I had a friend who miraculously saved the life a baby who died on a bus. It really was a miracle to everyone who witnessed it....

The fathers appreciation hugging the man who performed CPR had my eyes welling up. My thick carapace developed during youth is nearly gone these days :o.

Synchronicity had me viewing this thread. Recently one of my little cousins out of the blue asked "Do you know CPR?" I told her that I knew the procedure and was confident I could perform in an emergency. But, I had never practiced or used it before. I was a little bewildered because she just shrugged and went on her way. The little ones adore me as I make time for them and treat them as equals. But, this exchange had been stuck in my head for a while and now I finally know why :p.

It looks like the toddler was choking on food as the "Helmrich" manoevre was used & this saved her life. I did a CPR course and I was TOLD clearly to NEVER use this in any circumstances as it breaks people's ribs and they sue you...

Gar! Christian you just had to go and do that? :p

I was literally getting angry when no one was going on the tracks to help what appeared to be a child(someone did eventually). They were just waving at the train operator like that's going to signal anything...

Alas you hit me pretty good and really had my emotions rolling.

Kind of sheds a different light on the term "first responders" huh? Uniform and badge not required.

Great video, and great story!

As a fully qualified diver we are taught BLS which includes CPR and also the administration of O2. We were told at the very start of learning 1st Aid that it matters not if ribs get broken in the event of administrating cpr. Not one single person in the UK has ever been sued because of it. Broken ribs do not, unless they puncture a lung (which cannot happen in this event) cause a major issue, just very uncomfortable.

After all, a broken rib is far preferable to death??

Just in the USA .... ;-)

In Canada - Alberta anyway, there is a law to protect people from being sued for doing their best to save others.

On a secondary note -- most of us are already heroes ... just waiting for the realization that often comes with opportunity.

Not true ...

The right name is Heimlich maneuver, more about it here (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000047.htm) and here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choking)

As you can see in the picture you should be nowhere near the ribs. Turn the knuckle of your thumb turned inward and
push on the belly button, then thrust the abdomen (as learned at medic first aid, ... another diving instructor here :p).

I totally agree with you - and even if people did it wrong, it would be better to be alive with a cracked rib, than dead! I would do it if the situation arose.

I had tears in my eyes when I saw the man and the father hug. Good tears. :)
