I've always been interested in animals and I've also always wondered that what kind of animal characteristics I have so I finally decided to find out.
Here is a lighthearted quiz where you can find your spirit/power animal:
http://www.jerismithready.com/quiz/
So, what kind of an animal are you?
My spirit animal seems to be swan. Holy cow, the description fits me perfectly! :p
You are a Swan! (your score: 26)
http://www.jerismithready.com/jeri/assets/Image/totem/Swan.jpg

That was fun! I too am a swan, which pleases me. As the old saying says--- nice and calm and serene on the surface, but paddling furiously under the water. I had the wolf second. I was a bit taken aback when I saw 'wolf' but the explanation stressed family and small supportive friendship groups, and that's me too.
I already knew I am a dragon! Which I also like because I was born in Wales!

I had the wolf as a second option too, but the characteristics didn't really fit me except for the part that I'm a lone wolf.

I don't need to take a quiz, because I met my spirit animal. It's a giant black cobra. Well, it can change sizes at will, but it first appeared to me as being giant....about 7 ft tall. Anyway, I'll tell the story.
I once read a book by this guy Alberto Villoldo about his experiences in the Amazon in Peru studying under a shaman. I noticed that he was appearing somewhere to give a talk, so I went. At the end of his talk, he said he was going to lead the audience (of about 400 people) in a visualization designed to allow you to meet your spirit animal. I was game to try it, but was skeptical that I would get any results. But I was wrong.
He started by dimming the lights and playing some percussive music with chanting and he burned incense of some kind. As this was going on, we were supposed to get into a meditative type of mindset. Then he started the instructions for the visualization. I remember every part of it, so you can try it if you want.
First you visualize your consciousness going into the Earth. Once you are deep in the Earth, you visualize that you find an underground stream. The stream is flowing with very cold and pure water. You go into the water and it purifies you. After you are purified, you go with the current of this underground stream, and it takes you even deeper into the Earth.
You visualize that the stream empties into a giant cavern where there is a big underground lake, which is where you end up. You swim to the shore of this lake and walk along the shore. Somewhere along the shore you will meet some aspect of yourself. We were told this can take many forms, but whatever you find there will be it. (In my case it was myself as a little boy.) Then you ask this aspect of yourself if you can meet your spirit animal.
Shortly after I asked this, a giant black cobra emerged from the lake quickly. It scared the bejeezus out of me, because I knew it was not something I had contrived. I visualized the setting, that's all. It came right up to me and circled me over and over again in a counterclockwise fashion. Like I said, it was 7 ft tall, so it towered over me. It moved fast and appeared to me sort of choppy like when you fast forward video slightly over the normal playing speed.
Then Alberto Villoldo said we could ask this animal to come into our body and return to the surface with us to be a protector. This I kind of balked at, but I decided, what the hell. I'm not going to let cultural conditioning and irrational fear hold me back from a possibly beneficial experience. So I did that. And it went into me. Then we were told to visualize ourselves going back up the underground stream, back the way we came. We bathe more in the stream, purifying ourselves again, then we visualize our consciousness returning to the surface to where we were sitting. Then we just sort of sat quietly for a bit.
After the the event concluded, I don't think I had recognized the significance of what happened during the visualization. For days afterward, I noticed I would have this sensation of an energetic presence in my stomach/abdomen area, very much like a cobra that would raise up anytime any negative emotions came to threaten my state of mind, as if it was going to strike and inject it's deadly venom into anything threatening me. LOL. As you can imagine, this was somewhat unnerving. I thought at first maybe it was my imagination, but the sensations I was feeling were persistent and I couldn't deny it.
This went on for three days. Eventually, I became really weirded out by the presence of a cobra in my belly and so I did a little visualization to release it. I said, "Whatever this is, I appreciate it, but I am not ready for this. Could you please leave now?" And I visualized it leaving my body and floating away and it disappeared. After that, everything went back to normal.
I want to stress that there was nothing negative about this experience, it was positive. I just didn't know how to deal with it. For those who would warn me about inviting a snake into my body, I would say, "Come on, don't be a wuss." I refuse to live my life being afraid of my own shadow. You might want to try it sometime. Or you can take the quiz, I guess. ;-)

Thanks, that was fun. I am equally spider and owl.
Many moons ago I participated in a ceremony that involved several days of fasting and much meditating. I met my animal spirit, the buffalo. Hard-headed and determined, once I start after something, I pretty much can't be stopped.

A friend of ours from Colombia who is an actual Shaman, performed a fireside ceremony one night for us while staying in cabins out in the woods a few years back. She spent the day carefully constructing the circle from sizeable river stones, created home made rattles, the whole nine yards. It was really cool, only thing missing was the Peyote. At the end, with everyone in a meditative state, she invited us to meet our spirit animal.
This was back before I knew any of the stuff we talk about here, so I was quite surprised when a vision of a huge bounding wolf came right up.
Far as the quiz went? The wolverine.

As a Crow, you are analytical, adaptable, and exceedingly clever. You like solving problems, sharing a hearty laugh with friends, and most of all, enjoying a good meal. I am a Hawk, at 26, and I imagine that's the most dominant.
Took all the 20 and above and now have some pretty discriptive charecteristics, i know I've had all my life.
Fox 23, Wolverine 22, Owl 21, Crow 20.
Swan 19, Otter 16, Bear 16, Horse 15, Wolf 14, Spider 12, and Cougar 8.
Love those powers of all. Perception, intelligience, Stealth, Fearless, Aggressive, Phychic, Honest/integrity, Shrewd/detective, Open minded, Analytical, Skeptical, Tenacious, Loyal, Devoted, Adaptable, Athletic, Sensitive, Confidence, Beauty and appreciation of life. I can remember in the earlier years, before 5, I wanted to leave permanantly. Didn't like that Dad was leaving and my world was going to crap from there, until I took control of the path with God/Creator at my side like my shadow.
Nature calms me. Brooks or streams and waterfalls.

IDK how such things are determined. However I've had a couple incredible profound DMT experiences where I was transcended to a different dimension via the eyes of an owl, and I have dreams since then of waking up in the middle of a dark forest, being comforted by a white owl shedding light threwout the darkness. These feelings and attempts to recollect such memories give me goosebumps and straight chills from such profound experiences.

Hawk (25)

Powers: Communicate with the divine, discern powers in others, photographic memory
Hawks are the messengers of the Spirits. Adept with language, you might be a writer or a teacher. Your ability to assess situations impartially means that people often seek your guidance before making decisions. A brilliant visionary, you sometimes forget the mundane details of life like eating, sleeping, or paying bills.

My totem animal is large brown bear. I have met him few times while on shamanic trips. But I also have some sort of secondary totem animal which is violet octopussy. I am not 100% sure if the octopussy works for love and light though...
This test told me that I would be Hawk, and it all sounds true. Maybe spirit and totem animal are different? I am vs. I am guided by?

According to a shaman I consulted years ago, I am a Raven.

You’ll soon find your clairvoyant sensitivities and abilities increasing.
You’re quite adept at moving with the currents of life, rarely getting upset about things and continually adjusting and adapting as needed to make life easier.
You’re a natural clairvoyant, especially when you don’t try so hard and instead simply relax and allow the visions to show up.
You’re flexible and agile in body, mind and spirit.
All but BOLDED resonate correct. :)

What you're saying makes absolute sense! However, I associate "bird" energy with "air" and astrologically speaking, I have virtually no air in my chart. I am fire plus fire with a water element and a tad of earth in some of the houses, but virtually no "air". I guess the works are far more complex than I can comprehend at this point in time.

RAVEN:
As you mature, your spiritual awareness expands, while simultaneously your capacity for manifesting your preferences and desires increases.
You’re a spiritual healer; when you’re present, everyone around you can feel it.
You must be vigilant about any personal shadows that interfere with your true mission and that try to take you off the path.
You carry yourself with a reserved air of confidence and strength, remaining alert to all that’s occurring around you.
HAWK:
You’re very good at interpreting signs and omens from the natural world, whether these come as a blessing or a warning,
You easily flow with the movements of life and don’t typically get your feathers ruffled, unless you need to defend yourself in some way.
You’re very insightful; people come to you for your sage counsel and advice.

Some Native American tribes have a system of kinship system of clans. One is born into a clan or adopted into a clan in the case of a non-Native who did not have clan at birth. The clan animal is considered to be a guide in life. Some tribes don't have clans but have societies that one is asked to join as one grows up. In addition to the clan animal, a warrior spirit animal can be sought either by vision quest, dreaming, or consulting a holy man/woman of the tribe; always with an offer of tobacco. If we pay attention in our dreaming and waking lives, we often notice certain animals more frequently than others. Sometimes we even act like those animals.
My clan is Wolf, teacher of humility and how to live in a family unit. My warrior spirit is Buffalo, who gives everything for others (a blessing and a curse). I also learned, through the course of my walk, that I am connected closely to the Horse, Yellow Flicker, the Owl, and the Bee.
Many tribes don't trust Owl because they feel that it brings death. This occurred after white contact as Owl was traditionally women's medicine (although men could also work with it). Owl is night medicine. Much associated with women's medicine was stamped out with the introduction of patrilineal white society. There are nuances in each tribes' teachings about certain animals but, there is also a core commonality with the teachings from tribe-to-tribe.
These personal animal spirits are considered to be personal medicine; helpers. Whatever animal is connected to a person is that person's medicine. By studying the characteristics of the animal, people can try to apply those characteristics to how they live their lives and also understand themselves.

"Family comes first" could be a Wolf's motto. You form deep connections with close friends and family members, and they know you'd do anything to protect them. You're loyal, devoted, and passionate. Your worst fear is being alone, but be careful not to drown your loved ones in too much emotion.
Best matches: Swans, Otters, Crows
Watch out for: Spiders, Owls, Foxes
But I'm also very close to the horse :)
Here are your scores for the other animal spirits:
Horse (your score: 23)
http://www.jerismithready.com/jeri/assets/Image/totem/Horse.jpg
Characters: Filip and Bolan in the Aspect of Crow trilogy and "Storm Reaper"
Powers: Communicate telepathically with animals
As a Horse, you're sensitive, peaceful, and social. You easily make friends with members of all species, but you hold a special place in your heart for those who respect your intelligence. Sometimes your empathy can leave you vulnerable to others' moods or manipulations. Don't let one grumpy person ruin your whole day.
Best matches: Wolves, Otters, Swans
Watch out for: Foxes, Spiders, Owls
I really like doing those tests :)

23
Characters: Lycas, Nilo, Sirin, and Drenis in the Aspect of Crow trilogy; Marcus in "The Wild's Call"
Powers: Fighting ability—strength, speed, and toughness
Nobody messes with Wolverines. You're fearless, assertive (okay, aggressive), and tenacious. You might be a Marine, or a middle linebacker. You're the best at whatever you choose to do, because you give yourself no alternative.
Best matches: Bears, Cougars, Wolves
Watch out for: Crows, Owls, Swans

Thanks so much for the thread, and thank you Maunagarjana for your post. I too met myself, but at about 3-4 years old. I didn't have to go far, he was waiting for me just off the shore. I asked if it was okay to see my spirit animal. Nothing happened at first, but then to my surprise, not one, but 3 animals appeared. I don't think they came out of the water, not all of them at least. A wolf came out that was grey with a white face and white legs, chest and belly. It was quite big, but not like a 7 ft cobra, maybe twice the size of a normal wolf if I had to guess.
The other two were an owl and an eagle. They flew in from out of nowhere from opposite ends of the cavern to each other and landed on some weird post or perch, which looked like it was made from stone. They had one perch each and the owl was on the right of myself and the wolf, overlooking the lake, whilst the eagle was sitting to the left a bit further away. I wondered why the eagle was sitting further away than the owl from me, when all of a sudden, a goose came out of the water.. a normal sized white goose! It stood between myself and the eagle, looking down at the water. I invited them into my body and off we went. I looked back to see my little self waving, so weird. When I came out of meditation I felt quite different, but the same person. I have so much energy in my sacral chakra now. I feel different mentally as well, like more connected and aware.
So cool! :clapping: OH and something else happened! the numbness in my two big toes is pretty much gone since I did that. Incredible. I've had this problem with the nerves in my feet for a few years now. I wonder why the wolf was big but not the other 3 animals? I will have to read the rest of this thread when I return home. Thanks!

what a fun thread. Thanks for posting and I have enjoyed the answers.
I tried taking the test(s) but I can never answer the questions, as too many or none of the answers work for all situations. I don't like being pigeon-holed so I rebel against tests like this - that probably says something about me right then and there. So I tried a few different responses, but I got different answers each time and none seemed to really fit. Also I didn't see where my scores were - the first test that I took the first time just gave an answer, but no scores:
Spider
Characters: Arcas in Eyes of Crow
Powers: Artistic genius, ability to see patterns and sense trouble from a distance
As a Spider, you’re artistic, intuitive, and independent--maybe even a little eccentric. You can become so absorbed in your endeavors that you lose track of the outside world and the people in it. But what you give in return is magic, pure and simple.
Best matches: Cougars, Wolverines, Owls
Watch out for: Wolves, Crows, Bears
That said, I KNOW that my spirit animal is the butterfly. And it fits. I read a description in one of the spirit animal books (sorry, don't know the title) and it's me down to a T. Also, I have butterflies in much of my office decor, butterflies like to land on me (the latest was a fun trip to the Cajas in Ecuador where butterflies were having a field day around me), and I've had a pretty cool "vision" where I saw myself turn into a butterfly.
Awhile back I asked my pendulum how many spirit animals I have and the answer was 2. My second spirit animal is the puma / cougar, and that coincides with a reading from a shamanic friend. Although I mostly discarded the info at the time. And we're living in Ecuador and the Inca Cross shows 3 animals - the condor in the high realm, the puma in the human level, and the snake in the underground. So perhaps the combo of the butterfly and puma brings the transformative qualities of the butterfly down to earth with the raw puma energy.

I have an Idea:)))))
Name one animal from the sea, one from the land and one from the air...which first pops in mind...
For me it's
Dolphin
Lion
Eeagle
And then see if some of the caracteristics can be associated or reflected through reletaionships or life situations.
Been asking lately my Fam and friends that question and was quite suprised how many things got cleared up, playfully:))))))

...in a cat dominated world:))))))
A while ago, I spent a couple of months in a village, countryside surrounded by mountains...went visiting far-relatives...was quite suprised by the aimplicity and in some cases primitivity of living, despite the techonological connectivity nowa days...the would take care of animals, chicken, sheep, cows and so on and needed to protect them from more predatory animals...one day I visited one of those relatives, and he showed me his garden, and were quite proud about having his first batch of melons...he said that one day, he saw a snake moving between them and were looking for a stick, before he could do anything, one of his cats run at the snake and touched her 3 times at the head and the snake dropped dead...he said the cat walked away as if nothing happened...
So yeah:)))) see the humor in a snake with a cat-head:))))

Interesting (weird) story! I wonder if that snake flat out had a heart attack?!
Lol oh yes, cats dominate the world -- at least in mine they do in the lolcat thread. They are VERY distracting and FUN.
If anyone is curious and have some time to check it out, here's the moment I returned to the forum back in April (resurrected the thread):
