With more Americans staying away from the major news networks, comedy news has
made its way into homes of millions of Americans. Shows such as The Colbert Report
and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart have caught the attention of millions due to their
in-your-face approach to delivering America's current events, but why this growing
trend? Jeff Cohen, journalism professor at Ithaca College, provides his take on why
comedy news has become so popular.

As Cohen said in the interview, in Shakespeare's plays, in fairy tales and other folk lore, the role of the Fool was a vital one.
Present day comedians fill a similar role.
Traditionally, the King's Fool was often his most valued adviser because the Fool could voice painful truths and make everyone laugh at the same time, easing the passage of bitter pills, and making it possible for concealed problems to come to the light in the most optimal way.
If no one was willing to acknowledge the truth of the matter, they could always say, "Ah, he's just a fool, what does he know?"
Whereas the King's other advisers might be in danger of their lives to be so open, the Fool was protected by the flexibility and unexpectedness of his personal and philosophical stance, which was so far outside the box that it could be both respected or ignored.

In Tarot, the Fool represents innocence and is associated with the value of zero.

'Containing all possibilities, the Fool represents the phenomena of 'synchronicity' or 'coincidences' between happenings.
The Fool is the part of us that unconsciously connects to the greater universal whole...'
'...The Fool... moves from an impulse that arises out of the infinite possibilities alive in the embryonic state represented by zero.'
(from the book on Tarot, Motherpeace, by Vicky Noble)

In Native American lore, the role of the Heyoka, who possessed Coyote or Crazy Wisdom, was also highly revered.
A warrior Heyoka might ride into battle sitting backwards on his horse, carrying no shield.
It was considered bad luck to kill a Heyoka, and so his mystique as well as his very vulnerability were his protection.

Comedians like Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are performing a similar service, and they are brave souls, but I think that Crazy Wisdom protects them also, even in these times.

We need not only whistleblowers to show us the truth, but also wise Fools to provide a space where all factions can meet face to face and laugh at their common human frailties, and also face their darkest collective experiences.
Comedians help not only to enlighten, but to provide a very necessary safety valve.
The ability to make people laugh is a gift that is still undervalued today, but it seems that is actually part of the Fool's contradictory nature and invulnerability, part and parcel of the role of the Fool, and the service he/she provides.
It's a very unique and wonderful characteristic woven into the fabric of Great Mystery....

Not exactly related but I'll post it anyway.

(CNN) -- Comedian-actor Patton Oswalt may not seem the most likely person to soothe the wounded national psyche after the deadly bombs that struck the Boston Marathon. Oswalt has no obvious ties to Boston, and he makes a living telling jokes, not comforting the afflicted.
But Oswalt's eloquent thoughts about the attacks, which he posted Monday afternoon to his Facebook page, have been widely passed around the Internet as an inspiring testament to humankind's inherent goodness in the face of evil. (Warning: he uses strong language.)
"I remember, when 9/11 went down, my reaction was, 'Well, I've had it with humanity.' But I was wrong,' " wrote Oswalt, best known as the voice of Remy the rat from "Ratatouille" and for playing Spencer on TV's "The King of Queens."
"This is a giant planet and we're lucky to live on it but there are prices and penalties incurred for the daily miracle of existence. One of them is, every once in awhile, the wiring of a tiny sliver of the species gets snarled and they're pointed towards darkness," he wrote.
Celebrity Bostonians react to bombings
"But the vast majority stands against that darkness and, like white blood cells attacking a virus, they dilute and weaken and eventually wash away the evil doers and, more importantly, the damage they wreak. This is beyond religion or creed or nation. We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We'd have eaten ourselves alive long ago.
"So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, 'The good outnumber you, and we always will.' "
As of Tuesday afternoon, Oswalt's post had received more than 300,000 Likes and had been shared more than 220,000 times.
It has also garnered more than 12,000 comments on Facebook. Among them was this one, from a woman in Annapolis, Maryland:
"Sharing this message. This is exactly what I told my children last night. The good will always outnumber the bad. My husband was there and is safe. But my heart is just broken for those who are not."

This thread could not be complete without this 3-minute wake-up call.... as far as I'm concerned, George Carlin is an Ascended Master.
