A traveling-wave reactor (TWR) is a type of fourth-generation nuclear reactor that nuclear engineers anticipate can convert fertile material into usable fuel through nuclear transmutation in tandem with the burnup of fissile material.
TWRs differ from other kinds of fast-neutron and breeder reactors in their ability to utilize fuel efficiently without uranium enrichment or reprocessing, instead directly using depleted uranium, natural uranium, thorium, spent fuel removed from light water reactors, or some combination of these materials.
The name refers to the fact that fission does not occur throughout the entire TWR core, but remains confined to a boundary zone that slowly advances through the core over time. TWRs could theoretically run, self-sustained, for decades without refueling or removing any spent fuel from the reactor.
History
Traveling-wave reactors were first proposed in the 1950s and have been studied intermittently since that time. The concept of a reactor that could breed its own fuel inside the reactor core was initially proposed and studied in 1958 by Saveli Feinberg, who called it a "breed-and-burn" reactor.[1] Michael Driscoll published further research on the concept in 1979,[2] as did Lev Feoktistov in 1988,[3] Edward Teller/Lowell Wood in 1995,[4] Hugo van Dam in 2000,[5] and Hiroshi Sekimoto in 2001.[6]
No TWR has yet been constructed, but in 2006, Intellectual Ventures launched a subsidiary named TerraPower, LLC to model and commercialize a working design of such a reactor, which has since come to be called a "traveling-wave reactor". TerraPower has developed TWR designs for low- to medium- (300 MWe) as well as high-power (~1000 MWe) generation facilities.[7] Bill Gates featured TerraPower in his 2010 TED talk.[8]

The Nazi Bell was a plasma induction coil, designed to irridate compounds of Thorium and Beryllium to transmute Thorium and breed Uranium from it using a photo-chemical process.
Prior to WW2 Professor Walther Gerlach had experimented with the spin polarisation of atoms to generate plasma. In 1936 another scientist Dr Ronald Richter had experimented with electric arc furnaces smelting Lithium for U-boat batteries and discovered by injecting Deuterium into the plasma that he could create nuclear fusion. Richter's intention was to find a way to accurately measure temperatures within the furnace. he found that radiation caused by the interaction of deuterium and Lithium could be measured from the radiation produced.
This led to further experiments in 1941 with bombardment of Lithium and Deuterium in a Van der Graff accelerator in 1941.
The Nazi Bell expanded on these two insights by spinning mercury in a powerful magnetic field to cause a plasma which excited Beryllium to release Neutrons into Thorium at the core of the machine.
Gerlach began the project in January 1942 for the Nazi Atomic bomb project under contract from Heereswaffenamt Versuchsanstalt No.10 (Army Ordanance Dept Laboratory No.10). In June 1942 a contract was let to to AEG to provide electrical power with the highest priority possible. The AEG contract was codenamed Charite Anlage. Gerlach's project to transmute Thorium was originally called Projekt Thor.
The project to build the bell device, codenamed Die Glocke was inspired from Freiderich Schiller's poem Song of the Bell about the forging of a great bell from very pure metal. The poem had mystical overtones of racial purity for it's nazi inventors.
The Bell was built at Neumakt (Sroda Slaska) just east of Breslau (modern Wroclaw) and at Lubiaz in Poland. Thor was disguised as a company called Wekstatten dr Ferstenau (Furstenstein Castle) in joint partnership with AEG, Bosch and Seimens which all contributed various aspects of their expertise. The Centrifuge was built bt BAMAG at Dessau.
On 1 November 1943 the Bell device was installed in an underground complex beneath an airfield next to Breslau. The following November in fear of soviet advances it was shifted to a complex beneath Furstenstein Castle.
In December 1944 it was again shifted to Wenceslas Mine near the village of Ludwidsdorf (Ludwikowicze) and finally evacuated by aircraft on or about 17-18 April 1945.
The Bell's first operation was in May 1944 when five of the seven strong team of scientists died from what appears to have been radiation sickness. A second operation in July 1944 by scientists, this time with protective clothing also resulted in deaths.
Other projects concerned with the Nazi Bell were Kronos (Saturn) for the applied science aspect and Laternentreager ( [satan's] Lamp Holder) to do with medical experimentation. There is some indication from a Polish scientist who survived work on the project at Furstenstein Castle, that astronauts were being trained for a manned V-2 rocket program there too. This has also given rise to extraordinary conjecture that the Bell project had some exotic anti-gravity application, yet the evidence simply suggests a device for the production of Uranium.

SEOUL, South Korea - The buzz in town today is this photograph of Microsoft founder Bill Gates' shaking hands with South Korea President Park Geun-hye.
Gates, 57, might have not realized it Monday, but a one-hand shake in Korean culture - and also in Asia - is notably casual, done only when the other party is a good friend, of the same or younger age. Using one hand with the other tucked in the pants pocket is considered rude here, done when one is expressing superiority to the other.
"Perhaps it was his all-American style but an open jacket with hand in pocket? That was way too casual. It was very regretful," said Chung Jin-suk, secretary general at the Korean National Assembly.
President Park's office has said nothing publicly about the incident and a spokesperson for Gates declined to comment.
But Internet chat rooms and social network sites are filled with views debating cultural differences and analyses of Gates' laid-back style.
"I don't know if that was ignorance or just plain disrespect," Cho Park, a Korean student studying in New York, said. "It was pretty rude of him. The thing is I'm not sure if it is rude in Western culture."
The controversy doesn't end there. Gates had met with two other previous South Korean presidents: Kim Dae-jung and Lee Myung-Bak. He apparently gave the proper handshake with both hands to the late Kim in 2002 but was spotted giving an improper shake to President Lee in 2008. That also became a subject of debate.
Some South Korean media have been speculating that perhaps it was intentional, showing his political preference; respect for the opposition leader Kim but disrespect for the ruling party leaders Lee and Park, 61.
"Cultural difference or bad manners?" the Joongang Ilbo newspaper wrote.
"A disrespectful handshake or a casual friendly handshake?" DongAh Ilbo newspaper said in its photo caption.
"It's a head of state we're talking about," said Rick Yoon, a brand retailer in Seoul. "And she's a lady. This is not just a Korean thing. It's an international protocol.
"Maybe it was intentional. Otherwise, he has a very strange habit."
Gates was in South Korea on a three-day visit to promote his start-up TerraPower, which is developing next-generation nuclear reactors.

My question is, how come Gates invested in WMI and BP right before the Gulf Spill disaster in 2010, and how come he invested in nuclear **** before/after Fukushima decimated the current beliefs regarding safety of nuclear technology in a seismic zone?

Google crashed my browser when I tried to write this,
but here is a question: do these new reactors just keep burning for an indeterminate period of time if their housing is damaged;
how do people stop the process, since you can't really remove the fuel? At least I assume the reactor would be too dirty to handle?
meaning if Korea had its own Fukushima, are these new reactors actually safer than the old fashioned rod style (rods can be removed!)?
USA and other countries are having a really hard time storing the nuclear waste that they have.
Does the new reactor have the ability to utilize "spent fuel" material from said rods?
Otherwise it's just contributing the problem.

The last advantage of this shell game is that it allows responsible government officials-politicians and regulator alike- to avoid having to confront the real source of the waste problem -the manufacturing places where raw materials are selected, where manufacturing techniques are devised, and where products are made. Government does not want to reach its hand into this arena, which corporate management has traditionally viewed as entirely its own. So, instead, government forms coalitions with the polluters against the local citizenry, runs interference for the polluters so they never have to confront the victims of their handiwork, helps the waste haulers develop and license new dumps and incinerators, and enthusiastically promotes the myth of safe disposal.

Spent fuel pools (SFP) are storage pools for spent fuel from nuclear reactors. They are typically 40 or more feet (12 m) deep, with the bottom 14 feet (4.3 m) equipped with storage racks designed to hold fuel assemblies removed from the reactor. A reactor's pool is specially designed for the reactor in which the fuel was used and situated at the reactor site. In many countries, the fuel assemblies, after being in the reactor for 3 to 6 years, are stored underwater for 10 to 20 years before being sent for reprocessing or dry cask storage. The water cools the fuel and provides shielding from radiation.

Microsoft founder and extraordinary philanthropist Bill Gates is also a nuclear energy enthusiast.
In this excellent TeD presentation, Bill Gates talks about energy and climate, and the need for “miracles” to… well, save the world. He is a prominent investor in the nuclear reactor development firm TerraPower (for more details on the “traveling wave” reactor concept the company is developing, see this post at ANS Nuclear Cafe, and this interview with TerraPower CEO John Gilleland in ANS Nuclear News magazine).
Note that in the talk, Gates focuses on the need for nuclear technology to ameliorate climate issues in the 21st century—but an equally compelling case can be made for nuclear technology as essential to combat premature mortality due to fossil fuel combustion (estimated in the tens of thousands each year), or potentially devastating ocean acidification… clean and abundant baseload energy solves a long list of problems.

CERAWEEK-Gates favors nuclear power to help limit climate change
(Reuters) - Microsoft Corp co-founder and Chairman Bill Gates said that expanding nuclear power and making it safer was the most economic way to ward off climate change.
In an address to the IHS CERAWeek conference of international energy company executives, he said safe and reliable reactors were the best option and dismissed wind and solar energy as less practical.
"The only way to solve the climate challenge is have some source of energy that's economic," Gates told the gathering on Thursday evening.
Expanding the nuclear option, he said, outweighed any notion of wind or solar energy as large-scale storage systems for both remained unproven.
"You can site it where the power is needed," Gates said. "Unless you think there is a miracle hidden in storage."
Gates is a primary investor in Terra Power, a company working to create an improved, safer reactor intended to reduce waste and avoid creation of any fuel that could be used in nuclear weapons.

It's a one-sided rag that makes anti-nuclear activists seem crazy while touting nuclear power as the "only way to the future".

Lots of guests are looking at this thread, btw. People are really talking about Terrapower but the media is largely silent.
You have to remember that these capitalists nearly own the media and it's nearly impossible to speak against them with a voice loud enough for anyone to hear.

I find the eco-terror explanation for Fukushima as likely as any accident.
I find the capitalist response to this situation disgusting.
Any smart man who is educated about energy should have been able to predict such a disaster rather than profiting from the aftermath.

You should look into the LFTR technology - it burns U233 bred from Thorium, the whole thing is dissolved in molten fluoride salt (already molten - no meltdowns) at atmospheric pressure (nothing to explode). If the reactor cracks or overheats, the molten salt drains into drain tanks (thin tubes quite a bit apart, where critical mass can't occur so the fission stops almost immediately) where it cools down and solidifies. While still quite radioactive, it can however be handled and can't be dissolved by water (fluoride salts are very inert, hard to dissolve in anything). Also if the core overheats, the liquid salt increases its volume, meaning the molecules get further apart, so the neutrons have a longer way to go to hit something fissile, and the reaction slows down. So it's self regulating and has passive safety - anything bad happens, the reaction stops.
Moreover the tech has been tried some 40 years ago, in a reactor that ran for several years, and that could be turned off with a switch on Friday night and turned back on Monday morning. It can burn nuclear waste as well, produce some super rare and expensive isotopes needed by medicine and space research, and unlike any current nuclear reactor, which only uses 5 % of the fuel, the LFTR burns well over 90 %.
Thorium is everywhere and super cheap and the applications are endless (you can use the high temperatures produced by it to split stuff into elements and put them back into what you need - it would be economically viable to produce super clean burning petrol from CO2 and hydrogen in the air, desalinate water etc.).
The development is ongoing world-wide, but most likely it will be Chinese who will build it first and then sell or rent it to the rest of the world ...

There's thorium EVERYWHERE, nothing to fight for really. In all the waste soil left from rare minerals mining all over the world - they'll be pretty much happy to give it to you for free... Getting it from there is a fairly straightforward industrial process, nothing even close to enriching uranium, breeding plutonium, fabricating the fuel pellets and rods. There's a ton of pure, ready to use thorium buried in a dessert in the US. If you run out of all of that (after several thousand years and having failed to develop something even better, like fusion, with all that el-cheapo energy from Thorium ;-) there's still plenty in sea water.
LFTR also scales up or down quite nicely, you can easily power a small town or city district, eliminating the cost and losses in long distance distribution). An energy-hungry factory or desalination station can easily have its own. Small ones could be used for expeditions, rescue, space travel etc., although likely too costly to power only your own home or an RV.
There are obviously plenty of reasons we haven't been using it already, one (the most down-to-Earth one) is the friction from current business model, which is based on selling power plants for or under cost and tying the customer to fuel supply (same as cheap ink-jet printers business model). It's the old mafia/if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it mentality.
The other obvious one is the freedom such cheap and universally accessible energy would offer. You could make almost anything you need and many things you want for cheap. No need for war or army with nothing to fight and pillage for.
The funny thing is that current business could easily adopt it and adjust to it - it isn't free, the development and production cost is too high to make it in a garage (it doesn't have to be a building though since it doesn't need containment for leaked radioactive steam) - the manufacturing cost and complexity would be comparable to a airliner production. So they still could control it (and I suspect somebody will in the end).
It's a matter of the controlling elite's mind set (and the discussion on what induces it would be OT here, right?): do they want bright future for everyone, or just for themselves without most of the rest of us? Because the current reality is such that it won't happen without money, and that means THEIR money, as there isn't any other. Also it is now fairly obvious that populations tend to decrease themselves naturally, when they reach certain level in standard of living and their need for over-reproduction is gone. It just takes a bit longer and doesn't involve enslavement, war, torture or cataclysm.

What if Fukishima and Chrenobyl were both actually perfectly safe for humans shortly after the accident (a day or less) what if the fear of radiation has been spread based on no real evidence.

What if there was already a self sustaining reactor design (called LFTR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_fluoride_thorium_reactor)), that had been run for a total of 5 years in the 1950's and then shelved because weapons could not easily be created from them like current nuclear reaction solutions, a reactor solution that has built in safety measures and if will auto correct instead of "explode".
What if china AND India were both actively working at re creating this technology and will become dominate world powers because of it....

Personally I think the petro based control structure is here to stay for a while, but china and india are sort of wild cards in this, perhaps they are going to move ahead despite the Rothchild imposed restrictions.

Well, certain level of natural radiation is usual everywhere, and of course it isn't the same all over the world. There are places where it's much higher than normal, and still populations there have no health problems related to it. BTW in my country and all the eastern block countries the officially allowed dosage was raised about 100 or 1000-fold after Chernobyl (sorry for not having the exact number looked up). The event itself caused a wave of aborted pregnancies across Europe (my relative's wife was one of the victims) but after that we seem to be surviving. Of course it would be interesting to check if there is a correlation between Chernobyl and raise of cancer occurrence and such, as I don't believe we really know what radiation levels are really safe/tolerable and/or helpful, which may also vary between different ethnics. It also depends on the kind of radiation (alpha, beta, gamma) and the isotopes producing it.
As for India they're not working on LFTR as far as I know - they're building something more like 3rd gen thorium-burning reactor, which still needs fuel fabrication and all that crap. More efficient than 3gen, but nowhere near the LFTR.

For starters you don't put sea water into a reactor - there are local sources of water in the area, besides you're actually better off to just let it burn than to use sea water. No one working in the industry would have done that without orders from the outside, and why those orders were given isn't known, as those who gave them got away with it.
I've heard a speculation that it was a insurance scam - after all some of the blocks were de-commissioned or about to be de-commissioned, which costs a lot, and to cash an insurance policy paid by tax payers rather than having to cough up large sums over many years is a sweet deal, right?

For starters you don't put sea water into a reactor - there are local sources of water in the area, besides you're actually better off to just let it burn than to use sea water. You should look into the LFTR technology - it burns U233 bred from Thorium, the whole thing is dissolved in molten fluoride salt (already molten - no meltdowns) at atmospheric pressure (nothing to explode). If the reactor cracks or overheats, the molten salt drains into drain tanks (thin tubes quite a bit apart, where critical mass can't occur so the fission stops almost immediately) where it cools down and solidifies. While still quite radioactive, it can however be handled and can't be dissolved by water (fluoride salts are very inert, hard to dissolve in anything). Also if the core overheats, the liquid salt increases its volume, meaning the molecules get further apart, so the neutrons have a longer way to go to hit something fissile, and the reaction slows down. So it's self regulating and has passive safety - anything bad happens, the reaction stops.
Moreover the tech has been tried some 40 years ago, in a reactor that ran for several years, and that could be turned off with a switch on Friday night and turned back on Monday morning. It can burn nuclear waste as well, produce some super rare and expensive isotopes needed by medicine and space research, and unlike any current nuclear reactor, which only uses 5 % of the fuel, the LFTR burns well over 90 %.
Thorium is everywhere and super cheap and the applications are endless (you can use the high temperatures produced by it to split stuff into elements and put them back into what you need - it would be economically viable to produce super clean burning petrol from CO2 and hydrogen in the air, desalinate water etc.).
The development is ongoing world-wide, but most likely it will be Chinese who will build it first and then sell or rent it to the rest of the world ...

Again my belief would be even if there are, it would be nothing to overcome given today's technology and again this would only expose the MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX as economic saviour model for the pure BS that it is... ie. this could really help Americans who have been conditioned to believe such nonsense and thus turn away from the atrocities (denial) in its name when they don't HAVE TO!!! Which again (sad to say) seems to be the only explanation why so many people would tolerate so much death and destruction to other peoples and nations.

Ghehehe now I am sure we have mars already occupied, this margin of safety and that much efficiency, small nuclear engines power submarines on earth, I can image that could be a bit dangerous in space, thorium however.....................still pretty conventional way to get there without all this complicated jumproom hoopla, I bet governments all over the place are working on this...............like IRAN...... that would be funny as hell, if the US and Israel would actually want to bomb thorium reactors into oblivion, that means they know they have already lost, ah well, just saying, no clue if that could be true, myth busted, plausible, confirmed, we will see, interesting stuff, everyone would want a 20 cent power bill a month, I know I would.

There's nothing secret about the technology - it's just too technical / boring. The research has been done decades ago for most part, all that's left is engineering, development and certification, such as can we use the alloys already developed (the current ones don't seem to last as long as we would like), different variants of the technology based on their main purpose and deployment models (Do we want to just make cheap energy? Do we want to burn nuclear waste and make some cash on the energy on the side? Do we want to desalinate water and / or create chemical compounds? Do we require compact / mobile reactors? etc.).
The certification bit is a hard one, as none of the alloys used in MSRs have been approved for use in nuclear reactors, since the industry has no use for them, so there's no rush and also the certification process is very costly. This is probably the sole reason why no LFTR has been built so far, and why China will beat everyone else because they don't give a damn about US certification ...
I highly recommend Gordon McDowell's YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/gordonmcdowell) - he has been documenting the developments for some time now, and only yesterday posted this very interesting video, which summarizes the current state of the affairs:

Death Star-esque laser to solve power crisis (PHOTOS)
In a project fifteen years in the making, scientists have created a record-breaking laser that could solve the energy crisis for good. The US National Ignition Facility is now one step closer to generating a controllable nuclear fusion reaction.
The American National Ignition Facility (NIF) has entered the encyclopedias by generating a 500 terawatt shot, simultaneously using 192 beams. In simpler terms, that's “1,000 times more power than the United States uses at any instant in time, and … about 100 times what any other laser regularly produces today” says the NIF.
Due to the manner in which the multiple beams converge to focus extreme levels of energy and ultimately power on a specific target, some have likened it to the Death Star, the moon-sized station from the Star Wars movies.
And while not as powerful as the fictional space station's massive death ray, the NIF's ultraviolet lasers will heat their target to hundreds of millions of degrees, thereby “igniting hydrogen fusion fuel in the laboratory and producing more energy than that supplied to the target.”
This, in the long run, would mean controlled fusion, as opposed to the uncontrolled form found in the hydrogen bomb.
The NIF's Initial fears about reaching such heights of laser performance centered on the quality of optics available in the 1990s.
The main fear then was that the available material would not endure the intensity of a laser beam. NIF personnel and their partners worked tirelessly to improve the manufacturing methods and significantly lower the incidence of defects. They also developed "in-house procedures to remove and mitigate small amounts of damage resulting from repeated laser firings."
“It is fully operational, and scientists are taking important steps toward the quest for clean fusion energy,” says NIF Director Edward Moses.
But environmental groups warn that research into fusion will redirect much-needed funding from proven alternative energy technologies such as wind and hydro power.

The concept of a radiation temperature (Trad) and of the transport of radiation arises from a logical extension of the familiar concepts of heat emission from a thermally warm object. In radiation thermodynamics, a hohlraum [in literal german "hollow area" or "cavity" a term of art synonymous with radiation case], is a cavity whose walls are in radiative equilibrium with the radiant energy within the cavity. This idealized cavity can be approximated in practice by making a small perforation in the walls of a hollow container of any opaque material. The radiation escaping through such a perforation will be a good approximation to blackbody radiation at the temperature of the interior of the container.
Key processes occur once the X-Rays from the fission primary have entered the hohlraum. Sequentially, those include the transport of those x-rays to other parts of the hohlraum wall and to the Lithium capsule in the center of the hohlraum. The evolution of the heated walls and the plasma directly heated by the x-rays are critical, along with the implications of those motions to the evolution of the region of x-ray production. All of these effects contribute to the net symmetry of x-ray drive incident upon the Lithium capsule, and must be understood and controlled in order to assure spherical implosions and good secondary fusion weapon performance.
Laboratory-scale Inertial confinement fusion research attempts to use certain directed power sources -- typically very large lasers, but also accelerator-produced particle beams -- to compress and heat a tiny target containing small quantities of fusion fuel (deuterium and tritium) to thermonuclear ignition conditions. The resulting "microexplosion" resembles a miniaturized thermonuclear weapon. These inertial confinement lasers that are used to replicate the coupling between the primary and secondary in a thermonuclear weapon.
The weapons laboratories studied all of these effects via the design and analysis of experiments on the Nova laser, and applies those lessons to the design of the hohlraum target that will achieve ignition and moderate gain on the National Ignition Facility.

Claims about the existence of Die Glocke originated in the works of Igor Witkowski. His 2000 Polish language book Prawda O Wunderwaffe (The Truth About The Wonder Weapon, reprinted in German as Die Wahrheit über die Wunderwaffe), refers to it as "The Nazi-Bell". This still doesn't answer everything. If a country got behind it, then it's a done deal. I said in my other post think of the logic here, unless the Oakridge professor and university kids were particularly gifted. This is not that big a deal... compared to building 20 cm think steel tanks inside huge concrete encasements, this is something that runs at the temperature of your oven at 350 to 450 degrees.
The whole idea is it's portability. So if I was a country that wanted to protect myself I would build hundreds of units across the country. There is no danger, no waste. Why do you need certification, that's old Uranium Nuclear Energy Thinking... You know what I see... The same deal as with hydrogen. This is SO dam easy, that the BIG ELITES can't see a way to build it to MAINTAIN CONTROL of DISTRIBUTION OF POWER.
Once it goes mainstream, a large corporation with enough resources could start building it, eventually it might be something small enough to fit in a vehicle. This could run small boats, trucks, cars, single building units just like a boiler in the basement. JUST WHAT THE ELITES DON'T WANT...

THAT IS ALWAYS the TOP PRIORITY.... It has to a mass scale project that cuts out all potential competition...

Is that how they are doing it? I was watching it over and over and trying to figure out what those little monkeys were doing it (lol) btw what is SOP again? I can understand the main weight is on the knee crux, but what exactly are they doing with their jumper?
I would seriously consider trying it for the fun of it and the health benefit (LOL) It would be an excellent therapeutic exercise (like trampolining) for stimulating the lymph circulation... but I can't exactly see how they are doing it!...

Keep this in mind however:
Those kids probably weigh 35-50lbs... the stress on their knee would be far less than an adult doing the same; I would advice against it.

The primary school had the nickname "Little Chicago", and had an awesome playground, 20 foot climbing frames, tractor tyres and these horizontal bars not quite 3' off the ground.
Stand on one leg and put the second one over, with your jumper wrapped around the bar and in the crutch of your knee. Reach under the bar and grab with both hands just below kneecap.
When first starting, easiest just to fall backwards and try to swing over with momentum...
When you get the hang of it, try forwards, hunching over on the top, and swinging low (straight back) on the way down, to build angular momentum. Pendulum in a pen case, swinging will give you the feel, pull the cord tight as it goes over the top, let it slack on the way down.
As an adult, you will do serious carnage, and probably end up with legs like Gumby
