"In the first half, George Noory welcomed the host of Cinema Insomnia, Mr. Lobo, for a discussion on sci-fi and horror films. Lobo commented on the popularity of his on-demand streaming show, noting 63,000 views have come from George's other home city, St. Louis. He currently produces 10 episodes a year and features comedic and interesting bits about movies such as Plan 9 from Outer Space and other so-called "trashy" films. According to Lobo, a recent study has found people who enjoy such films are highly intelligent. "So we don't have bad taste, we're just really smart," he said.

Lobo reflected on how low budget and abstraction allow an audience to use imagination to fill in missing details or special effects. He talked about writer-director Alfred Hitchcock's dark send of humor and his search for the perfect stabbing sound for the show seen in Psycho (made by plunging a knife into a casaba melon). Lobo shared some of his most beloved horror and sci-fi movies, including Return of the Living Dead, War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, and Forbidden Planet, which he called his favorite. Robby the Robot remains the best robot ever put on screen, he added."

"Open Lines followed in the latter part of the program. Several callers phoned in with their own favorite movies. Don in Bakersfield, California, told George he adored Phantasm, a horror film written and directed by Don Coscarelli. The story involves a mysterious grave robber known as Tall Man and the teenage boy who must face off against him. Gary in Austin, Texas, said he was a fan of Vincent Price in The Abominable Dr. Phibes. Among his favorite scenes is the masquerade ball where a man receives a jeweled frog mask that eventually strangles him as he wears it.

An interesting call came in from Jeff from Culver City, California, who discussed multiple dimensional realms. He suggested other dimensions could be accessed by certain people who have either participated in mind control programs or had spiritual experiences. Jeff likened parallel realities to walking down a mirrored version of a street, where one could also encounter the dead."

Feds, liberals and Californians Keep Out

"ASKED by an out-of-stater where the nearest shooting range is, Patrick Leavitt, an affable gunsmith at Riverman Gun Works in Coeur d’Alene, says: “This is Idaho—you can shoot pretty much anywhere away from buildings.” That is one reason why the sparsely populated state is attracting a growing number of “political refugees” keen to slip free from bureaucrats in America’s liberal states, says James Wesley, Rawles (yes, with a comma), an author of bestselling survivalist novels. In a widely read manifesto posted in 2011 on his survivalblog.com, Mr Rawles, a former army intelligence officer, urged libertarian-leaning Christians and Jews to move to Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and a strip of eastern Oregon and Washington states, a haven he called the “American Redoubt”.

Thousands of families have answered the call, moving to what Mr Rawles calls America’s last big frontier and most easily defendable terrain. Were hordes of thirsty, hungry, panicked Americans to stream out of cities after, say, the collapse of the national grid, few looters would reach the mostly mountainous, forested and, in winter, bitterly cold Redoubt. Big cities are too far away. But the movement is driven by more than doomsday “redoubters”, eager to homestead on land with lots of water, fish, and big game nearby. The idea is also to bring in enough strongly conservative voters to keep out the regulatory creep smothering liberty in places like California, a state many redoubters disdainfully refer to as “the C-word”.

Estimates of the numbers moving into the Redoubt are sketchy, partly because many seek a low profile. Mr Rawles himself will not reveal which state he chose, not wanting to be overrun when “everything hits the fan”. But Chris Walsh of Revolutionary Realty says growing demand has turned into such a “massive upwelling” that he now sells about 140 properties a year in the north-western part of the Redoubt, its heart. To manage, Mr Walsh, a pilot, keeps several vehicles at landing strips to which he flies clients from his base near Coeur d’Alene.

Many seek properties served not with municipal water but with a well or stream, ideally both, just in case. More than nine out of every ten Revolutionary Realty clients either buy a home off the grid or plan to sever the connection and instead use firewood, propane and solar panels, often storing the photovoltaic power in big forklift batteries bought second-hand. They also plan to educate their children at home. The remoter land preferred by lots of “off-the-gridders” is often cheap. Revolutionary Realty sells sizeable plots for as little as $30,000. After that, settlers can mostly build as they please.

Lance Etche, a Floridian, recently moved his family into the Redoubt after the writings of Mr Rawles stirred in him “the old mountain-man independence spirit—take care of yourself and don’t complain.” He chose a plot near Canada outside Bonners Ferry, Idaho, cleared an area with a view, put down gravel, “and they dropped the thing [a so-called “skid house”, transported by lorry] right on top of it”, he says—no permit required.

Some newcomers are Democrats keen to get back to nature, grow organic food or, in Oregon and Washington, benefit from permissive marijuana laws. Not all conservatives dislike this as much as Bonny Dolly, a Bonners Ferry woman in her 60s who says: “We don’t want liberals, that’s for sure,” and carries a .45-calibre handgun “because they don’t make a .46”. But lefties who move in and hope to finance tighter regulations with higher taxes often get the cold shoulder. Mr Walsh weeds out lefties from the start, politely declining to show them property, noting that they wouldn’t fit in anyway. This discrimination is legal, he says, because political factions, unlike race or sexual orientation, are not legally protected classes.

A red dawn

Todd Savage, who runs Survival Retreat Consulting in Sandpoint, Idaho, works with the more usual sort of client: political migrants who rail against “morally corrupt” nanny government elsewhere. He does a brisk business helping them set up their food-producing fortress-homesteads. Staff train clients in defensive landscaping, how to repel an assault on their property with firearms, and the erection of structures “hardened” to withstand forced entry and chemical, biological, radiological or explosive attack.

Very few redoubters, however, wish to secede from the United States. The Confederacy’s attempt fared badly, notes Mr Rawles. He did, however, exclude the politically conservative but mostly flat Dakotas from the Redoubt because mechanised units could manoeuvre easily there. The same went for swathes of Utah, a state also left out because it has little water.

Purists have criticised him for including eastern Oregon and Washington in the Redoubt, since their larger liberal populations near the west coast dominate state politics. But he believes that the designation will quicken efforts in the eastern reaches to form new, freedom-minded states within a generation. As Mr Walsh puts it, easterners’ taxes get them “nothing back except for a bunch more rules” from socialist bureaucrats.

As for doomsday itself, redoubters differ. Mr Rawles considers the most likely cause to be a geomagnetic solar storm like the Carrington Event in 1859, when a coronal mass ejection from the sun generated sparks in telegraph lines, setting some buildings on fire. Had the nearly 3,000 transformers that underpin America’s grid existed then, a quarter of them would have burned up, according to Storm Analysis Consultants in Duluth, Minnesota. Some redoubters have signed up to receive a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration alert of any approaching solar storm like the big one that blew across Earth’s path on July 23rd 2012, missing the planet by days.

Alternatively, a nuclear explosion 450km above the central United States would produce enough high-energy free electrons in the atmosphere below to fry the grid and unshielded electronics in all states except Alaska and Hawaii. Conceivably, and unpredictably, North Korea or Iran might dare to launch such a missile.

A more likely catastrophe, Mr Rawles believes, would be a pandemic virulent enough to cause the breakdown of the national sewerage system as well as the grid. Mr Savage, for his part, worries most about a “slow slide into socialism” akin to “death by a thousand cuts, right, you just keep whittling away at liberty” by, for example, restricting gun sales. Some of his firm’s clients fear that bankers may deliberately collapse the financial system in order to introduce a single global currency.

The dominant view is simply that institutions and infrastructure are more fragile than most believe, says Dave Westbrook, an American Redoubt consultant homesteading north-west of Sandpoint. Videos sold by his firm, Country Lifestyle Solutions, show redoubters how to assess the viability of off-grid properties, plant orchards and tend crops. But paranoia is out there, says Ben Ortize, the pastor of Grace Sandpoint Church. Terrorism, and the widespread belief that President Barack Obama’s progressive agenda is naive, have fuelled strong support for Donald Trump in the Redoubt, which has a disproportionately large population of former policemen, firemen and soldiers. To calm them down, he tells his flock that the Bible advises them to trust in the Lord, rather than in shotguns and Tasers.

The area’s bad rap is sometimes undeserved. “Hate in America: A Town on Fire”, a recent Discovery Channel broadcast about Kalispell, Montana, attempted to conflate gun-lovers who recoil at big government with the few white supremacists shown at the start. In fact, there is much less racism in the inland north-west than in the South, says Alex Barron, founder of the libertarian Charles Carroll Society blog and self-proclaimed “Bard of the American Redoubt”. Some are quick to label ideological opponents as white supremacists, he says. Liberal bloggers have called him one; but Mr Barron is black.

The Redoubt does give refuge to more than its fair share of outlaws, whether ageing draft-dodgers or crooks on the lam. So says Mike “Animal” Zook, a bounty hunter in Spirit Lake, Idaho with a gunslinger image enhanced by his sidearm’s faux-scrimshaw handle. Pointing east from the Riverman Gun Works car park, he notes that a man can trek that way for nearly 150 miles and see nothing but majestic forest and game. Turn south, and the wilderness extends more than double that.

Wanted men can and do disappear here, Mr Zook says. Some pan for gold, hunt, trap game and quietly slip into a town once a year or so for supplies. Nationwide, perhaps only one in 1,000 indicted felons skip bail and run for it, he says, but the percentage is higher in the Redoubt and especially in Lincoln County, in nearby north-western Montana. That provides enough work, he says, for more than 2,000 fugitive-recovery agents—as bounty hunters are also known—who, like himself, operate at least part-time, typically as private contractors for bondsmen in the Redoubt. All in all, the frontier spirit of America’s Old West is still alive and well."

Natural Supplementation/ Irish Mythology & Psychopaths

In the first half, pharmacist and nutritionist Benjamin Fuchs offered tips on diet and supplementation in order to combat various physical ailments and health problems. When it comes to people who have multiple symptoms occurring, it's best to treat the root cause, which generally comes down to a triangle of three systems, he said-- first, it's the digestive system, followed by the the blood sugar system, and then the adrenal/thyroid access, which when it breaks down leads to further disease. Periodic fasting and probiotics can help the digestive system, and good fat, protein, electrolytes, and B vitamins help stabilize the blood sugar system, he cited.

Regarding seizure disorders, one of the most powerful treatment strategies is the ketogenic diet-- a high fat diet that duplicates the anti-seizure properties of fasting, he noted. The mineral selenium has anti-estrogenic benefits, which makes it important for dealing with autoimmune issues, and hot flashes, and it has anti-cancer effects as well, he said. For chemical sensitivities, he recommended strengthening the body's detox system with the amino acid glutamine, as well as copper, selenium, magnesium, and Vitamin C.

Musician, communication consultant, and author Thomas Sheridan came to international recognition in 2011 with his bestselling book, "Puzzling People: The Labyrinth of the Psychopath." He detailed what he discovered about psychopaths, and also shared his research on ancient Irish mythology, the Druids, fairies, and giants. When you rise to a certain point in any profession, you may encounter a psychopathic person with a predatory nature. They have a soulless or cold quality, and use their abilities to manipulate or hurt others in order to get ahead, he outlined. While about 1% of the population are said to be psychopathic, a subset of these turn out to be serial killers, he added.

Sheridan suggested that a cataclysm took place in 2500 BC that he believes was the origin of Plato's Atlantis story. The megalithic arc of the western Atlantic, as well as the western Mediterranean are what is left of this lost civilization, he argued. Irish mythology has a similar theme to the Atlantis tale, about a highly evolved civilization that was devastated in a flood or calamity, and there is evidence that this did indeed take place around 2500 BC in a large swath of Britain, he continued. The ancient Druids followed a nature-based religion, and the notion that reincarnation was not related to karma or punishment. They believed you could be reincarnated backwards in time, forwards in time, or even in current time, without any particular chronology, he revealed.

"Former Deputy Sheriff in Bailey, Colorado, Karen Anderson experienced heightened awareness honing her intuitive skills on the force dealing with life-threatening situations while on patrol. During this time she rediscovered her childhood gift of animal communication and has been helping others to bridge the divide and understand the mind of animals. "You'd be surprised what the animals can tell you... and animals don't lie," Anderson said. Animals can send messages in the flash of an image and read our minds, though they do not understand certain human concepts, she explained. Pets can provide detailed intelligence about their humans, including information related to upcoming surgeries, job changes, and relationship issues, Anderson added.

"I actually hear the animals, I can hear them speaking to me," she revealed, pointing out how the eyes of the animals play a critical role in the communication. Anderson spoke about pets assisting investigations during her days as a law enforcement officer. she shared details about one case in which the client's brother had been murdered. His cats communicated the initials of the primary suspect as well as specifics on his physical appearance, she reported. Anderson also commented on speaking to deceased animals. "They're actually easier for me to connect with than those that are here and alive... they are pure energy," she said."

"During the Open Lines portion of the show, Bernie from New Jersey admitted to remote viewing a room in George's house on a previous occasion in which he phoned into the program. He described a room with a dark appearance, possibly from rich wood paneling, containing an older chair with wooden arms, a reading light, and filled with books. George validated Bernie's vision, noting his house in St. Louis has a room with two old chairs with wood arm rests, a light for reading, in front of a bookcase brimming with books he has collected since his early twenties.

Vanessa from Kansas City, Missouri, told George about a stray dog she welcomed into her home. "This dog, there was something different about him... he saved other animals," she said. According to Vanessa, the dog brought a baby bird to the house gently clutched in his mouth. The bird did not have a scratch on it, she recalled. Vanessa also recounted the time her dog fetched a mouse from the road before it was hit by an oncoming car. John in Ontario, Canada, reported a loud rumbling which shook his house so violently things fell off shelves. He went outside to witness a WWII era bomber flying very low overhead. John questioned whether the sighing really happened. "It flew into this one small cloud... it never came out," he said."

"Water is now the scarcest resource, but one American company is looking to change that with a process called "washing water." During hours two and three, Kevin Collier, president of Collier Group, joined Richard Syrett to describe how their controlled-gravity separation technology might change the way we use, recycle, distribute, and increase the world's clean water resources. Collier’s first job out of college was designing jet engines, which he says prepared him for developing high-speed centrifuges used to purify waste water. Collier says that his technology can also produce water for drinking and agriculture by separating out the harmful components by a combination of gravity, alternating magnetic fields, and reverse osmosis. He claims that the efficiency of the system is "extremely high." His company has produced a portable system that can clean fracking wastewater in the field so that it doesn’t have to be loaded into trucks and injected back into the ground, causing earthquakes and contamination of aquifers, as is the case presently. The system extracts the impurities in wastewater in an efficient way that makes the products easy to reuse or dispose of.

Collier's process also produces "pipeline grade" oil that is reclaimed in the cleaning process, he says, as well as concentrated salt water. One innovative use of salty wastewater relies on its tendency to stratify in such a way that the bottom layer is superheated when exposed to sunlight, which can be used to power generators and provide power for about 5000 homes from a five acre pond. Collier also related that he has developed a process of using magnetic fields to reduce the surface tension in water, which not only makes it easier to clean, but produces other effects such as use in agriculture as plants become "more hydrated so they grow faster" he asserted. Whatever method is used to provide clean water, Collier thinks that "these are things we must do in the future" to assure a clean and safe environment."

"In the first hour, writer Van Jensen and artist Pete Woods discussed their comic book series, Cryptocracy, which evolved out of their long fascination with conspiracy theories, and includes host Richard Syrett and George Noory as illustrated characters. Jensen said he came up with the story several years ago since he’s "always been interested in conspiracies." The comic book takes the point of view of a shadowy group of families who control the world’s destiny. They also mentioned that shows like Coast To Coast were influences on the story. Both believe that many conspiracies that are spoken about are due to a confluence of greedy and powerful individuals that only appear to be in cooperation, but acknowledge that there is certainly a "wide scale network of corruption." For those who want to work in the comics and graphic novel genre Jensen suggested that they "just make comics" because as Woods added, "eventually someone will notice."

Open Lines filled the last hour. Scott from Windsor, Ontario doubted that Collier's system would be energy-efficient enough to be worth putting into operation and pointed out that large companies such as Nestle have been buying up rights to municipal water supplies. Jeannie in Dallas thinks that the "oil companies today are like the tobacco companies were 50 years ago," and will not reveal any wrongdoing until it is too late. Cliff from Atlanta had a creepy story about seeing a moth on his porch when he went home to retrieve a movie on exorcism. He said it had an "upside down cross" on its back and that he couldn't figure out what kind of species had that marking. He promised to send in a photo he took of the strange insect."

Voting Machines / Sociology of Hauntings

"Founder of Black Box Voting a nonpartisan, nonprofit investigative reporting and public education organization for elections, Bev Harris, has become known for her work researching the truth behind electronic voting machines. She began the first half by telling George that there is an established tradition of election tampering in the United States and that "we now have the ability to scale it up," meaning that instead of stuffing ballot boxes with fake votes, elections can now be changed with a few keystrokes. She continued by pointing out that there are three voting machine companies in the U.S. and that the media steers attention away from the most high-risk machines, which are referred to as "central tabulators." According to Harris, votes can be changed in seconds, swaying thousands and perhaps millions of votes with a "vote adjustment screen" built into the software.

Harris lamented the decline of oversight in elections and believes that our system is only about 5% reliable. She believes that things have "gotten much worse in the last 10 years" and pointed to the systematic elimination of any oversight or ways to check original votes cast, such as erasing images of all original paper ballots that many vote counting machines used to tabulate. Harris’ phone connection cut out multiple times during the program. She commented that "weird things happen to both of my phones during elections." Harris thinks that presidential elections by popular vote would be much more difficult to hack and supports the elimination of the electoral college for this reason. In spite of the potential for tampering, Harris concluded that we should "be out there voting because otherwise we have just given up."

"In part two, sociology Professor Dennis Waskul talked about his two years of fieldwork and interviews with people about how they experience ghosts and hauntings in everyday life. Contrary to many researchers who study ghosts and other paranormal subjects, Waskul and his wife Michele had no history of supernatural events or experiences that drew them to the subject. They are not paranormal investigators in the classical sense, as Waskul described their method using ethnography to study the phenomenon. As he said, they concentrated on "human experiences that surround these ghostly encounters." More than half of those he interviewed did not witness a ghost in the classical sense, rather they felt, heard, or smelled something that they could not explain by normal means. Waskul pointed out that the majority of his subjects merely "felt a presence that sought to be acknowledged" and that only a small percentage were perceived as truly frightening or evil.

One of Waskul’s cases may not have been a ghost in a classical sense, but an instance of someone who needed the model of ghostly encounters to deal with the loss of a loved one, which he pointed out as an example of a "will to believe." Others, such as rabid skeptics, he describes as struggling against this belief. The research seems to indicate that people who are highly religious or highly skeptical tend to have no ghost experiences. For most of his research subjects though, Waskul says that the "vast majority were reluctant believers." As for one of most frightening things he has encountered, he recalled seeing a murder confession from the early 20th century scratched into the floorboards of an old home that was experiencing poltergeist phenomena. It read, "I killed my baby sister on the chimney." Waskul has started another project to study haunted houses and "can’t wait to do it again."

"Water is now the scarcest resource, but one American company is looking to change that with a process called "washing water." During hours two and three, Kevin Collier, president of Collier Group, joined Richard Syrett to describe how their controlled-gravity separation technology might change the way we use, recycle, distribute, and increase the world's clean water resources. Collier’s first job out of college was designing jet engines, which he says prepared him for developing high-speed centrifuges used to purify waste water. Collier says that his technology can also produce water for drinking and agriculture by separating out the harmful components by a combination of gravity, alternating magnetic fields, and reverse osmosis. He claims that the efficiency of the system is "extremely high." His company has produced a portable system that can clean fracking wastewater in the field so that it doesn’t have to be loaded into trucks and injected back into the ground, causing earthquakes and contamination of aquifers, as is the case presently. The system extracts the impurities in wastewater in an efficient way that makes the products easy to reuse or dispose of.

Collier's process also produces "pipeline grade" oil that is reclaimed in the cleaning process, he says, as well as concentrated salt water. One innovative use of salty wastewater relies on its tendency to stratify in such a way that the bottom layer is superheated when exposed to sunlight, which can be used to power generators and provide power for about 5000 homes from a five acre pond. Collier also related that he has developed a process of using magnetic fields to reduce the surface tension in water, which not only makes it easier to clean, but produces other effects such as use in agriculture as plants become "more hydrated so they grow faster" he asserted. Whatever method is used to provide clean water, Collier thinks that "these are things we must do in the future" to assure a clean and safe environment."

"In the first hour, writer Van Jensen and artist Pete Woods discussed their comic book series, Cryptocracy, which evolved out of their long fascination with conspiracy theories, and includes host Richard Syrett and George Noory as illustrated characters. Jensen said he came up with the story several years ago since he’s "always been interested in conspiracies." The comic book takes the point of view of a shadowy group of families who control the world’s destiny. They also mentioned that shows like Coast To Coast were influences on the story. Both believe that many conspiracies that are spoken about are due to a confluence of greedy and powerful individuals that only appear to be in cooperation, but acknowledge that there is certainly a "wide scale network of corruption." For those who want to work in the comics and graphic novel genre Jensen suggested that they "just make comics" because as Woods added, "eventually someone will notice."

Open Lines filled the last hour. Scott from Windsor, Ontario doubted that Collier's system would be energy-efficient enough to be worth putting into operation and pointed out that large companies such as Nestle have been buying up rights to municipal water supplies. Jeannie in Dallas thinks that the "oil companies today are like the tobacco companies were 50 years ago," and will not reveal any wrongdoing until it is too late. Cliff from Atlanta had a creepy story about seeing a moth on his porch when he went home to retrieve a movie on exorcism. He said it had an "upside down cross" on its back and that he couldn't figure out what kind of species had that marking. He promised to send in a photo he took of the strange insect."

I found the salt gradient ponds VERY interesting. If you dump a load of salt into a pond, you get a dense lower level of brine, that can heat up to near boiling through sunlight WITHOUT CONVECTION CURRENTS FORMING because the brine is so dense. This is a great cheap way to store heat. Then access it for space heating or run a Freon/Ammonia turbine generator off it. No battery needed, you just take the heat when required!

I visualised three ponds. Firstly the one with the brine. Second the one with the fish. Third the one with the plants to feed the fish. A pipe system moves nutrition dense water from the fish pond to the plant pond (fish excreta), another pipe system runs from the bottom of the brine pond into the Rankine Cycle generator, and uses the fish pond as the cooling part of the cycle. That way you have a reasonable heat gradient, and the fish get some warmth when people switch the generator on. Very elegant!

Do read. A pretty wonderful little story. One runner accidentally collided with the other, she stayed behind to help her rival (who'd twisted her ankle in the fall), and they came in last and second to last, way behind the rest of the field.

From the US and NZ, they'd never met each other before. For their sportmanship, they were both granted a place in the final. :star:

New Zealanders, take a bow. They're raising the bar for sportsmanship at the moment, and not just in athletics. In cricket, the NZ men's team has become universally respected and admired for their impressive sportsmanship and immaculate conduct -- while playing very competitively, too. :muscle:

The Fae

Fairies, Keshalyi, Sidhe, Tuatha de Danann, The Fair Folk, Daoine Sidhe, Tylwyth Teg, Bonne Dames, The Fae. All names for one broad group of humanoid supernatural beings who originated in the Real World and migrated to Kintaria with the rest of the supernatural.

Folklorists have suggested that their actual origin lies in a conquered race living in hiding, or in religious beliefs that lost currency with the advent of religion. These explanations are not necessarily incompatible, and they may be traceable to multiple sources. Much of the folklore about fairies revolves around protection from their malice, by such means as cold iron (iron is like poison to fairies, and they will not go near it) or charms of rowan and herbs, or avoiding offense by shunning locations known to be theirs.

In particular, folklore describes how to prevent the fairies from stealing babies and substituting changelings, and abducting older people as well. Many folktales are told of fairies, and they appear as characters in stories from medieval tales of chivalry, to Victorian fairy tales, and up to the present day in modern literature. Diminutive fairies of one kind or another have been recorded for centuries, but occur alongside the human-sized beings; these have been depicted as ranging in size from very tiny up to the size of a human child.

Even with these small fairies, however, their small size may be magically assumed rather than constant. Some fairies though normally quite small were able to dilate their figures to imitate humans. Wings, while common in Victorian and later artwork of fairies, are very rare in the folklore; even very small fairies flew with magic, sometimes flying on ragwort stems or the backs of birds. Nowadays, fairies are often depicted with ordinary insect wings or butterfly wings.

In some folklore fairies have green eyes and often bite. Though they can confuse one with their words, fairies cannot lie. They hate being told 'thank you', as they see it as a sign of one forgetting the good deed done, and, instead, want something that will guarantee remembrance.

In folklore, they are variously regarded as a "natural" but hidden species, as spirits of the dead, or as descendants of either fallen angels or demons. Fairies are generally described as human in appearance and having magical powers. Their origins are less clear in the folklore, being variously dead, or some form of demon, or a species completely independent of humans or angels.

Another theory is that the fairies were originally worshiped as minor goddesses, such as nymphs or tree spirits.

A Fairy can be of any element, and can be either light or dark. Fairies are often seen as helpers of several things. Being as the seasons change Fairies often help it, they help wake plants and trees from slumber as well as animals and insects. Such creatures will often only show themselves to children and even than that is rare.

Gort (The Day the Earth Stood Still) being assembled.

The eight-foot metal robot accompanies Klaatu, a visitor to Earth from an unnamed, distant planet, aboard a flying saucer. He does not speak, but uses a laserlike weapon projected from beneath a head visor to vaporize weapons and other physical obstacles. Klaatu describes "him" as one of an interstellar police force, holding irrevocable powers to "preserve the peace" by destroying any aggressor.[1]

The character was loosely based on Gnut, in "Farewell to the Master", a 1940 Astounding Science Fiction short story written by Harry Bates, used as the basis for Edmund H. North's screenplay. In that story Gnut is a moving green statue apparently attendant upon Klaatu, but identified, in the terminus of the story, as the eponymous "master" over Klaatu.

On screen, Gort is a large, seamless robot apparently constructed from a single piece of "flexible metal". He was portrayed by seven-foot, seven-inch (231 cm)-tall actor Lock Martin wearing a thick foam-rubber suit designed and built by Addison Hehr. Two suits were created, fastened alternately from the front or back so that the robot would appear seamless from any angle in the completed scenes. A fiberglass statue of Gort was also used for the close-ups of the firing of his energy beam weapon or when a scene did not require that he move. To maximize the height of the robot, the Gort suit was made with lifts in the boots so that Martin could see forward through the suit's visor area during certain shots; air holes were provided under the robot's wide chin and jaw, and these can be seen in several close-ups of Gort's head.

During most of the film, Gort remains motionless in front of Klaatu's saucer, which rests on the National Mall in central Washington, D.C., while scientists and military researchers attempt to examine both the robot and the saucer. At one point, Klaatu communicates with him using reflected signals from a borrowed flashlight. Gort also responds to spoken commands, including the famous dialog line "Klaatu barada nikto", spoken by actor Patricia Neal's character toward the end of the film.

This soundtrack was composed in August 1951 and was Bernard Herrmann's first soundtrack after he moved to Hollywood. Herrmann chose unusual instrumentation for the film including violin, cello, and bass (all three electric), two theremin electronic instruments (played by Dr. Samuel Hoffman and Paul Shure), two Hammond organs, a large studio electric organ, three vibraphones, two glockenspiels, two pianos, two harps, three trumpets, three trombones, and four tubas.Unusual overdubbing and tape-reversal techniques were used, as well. 20th Century Fox later reused the Herrmann title theme in the original pilot episode for Irwin Allen's 1965 TV series Lost in Space. Danny Elfman noted The Day the Earth Stood Still's score inspired his interest in film composing, and made him a fan of Herrmann

Violence and Self-Defense/ Prophetic Perils

"In the first half, President and CEO of the International Combat Martial Arts Federation (ICMAF), Bradley Steiner, talked about self-defense, law enforcement issues, and the psychology of violence. Behind the increased reports of police-related violence, he cited the decay of our culture, and "by and large, an overwhelming number of people who no longer have a clear sense of morality...and they resent the fact that there are authority figures who'll curtail them...with necessary force when they behave badly." He also believes that there's a concerted effort to undercut local law enforcement so that federal authorities can take over what they're doing.

Steiner offered practical tips for people to avoid danger when walking around a city, such as being mindful of where you're going, and crossing the street if you see unsavory people coming your way. Instead of packing something like pepper spray, he recommended carrying a handful of aquarium gravel in your outer pocket, to throw in an assailant's face if necessary. He also suggested techniques that could incapacitate an attacker, such as kicking them in the knee. One of the basic rules of self-defense is to never allow a suspicious person to remove you from the initial scene, he added."

"In the latter half, researcher Holly Deyo discussed her new book Prophetic Perils, which details biblical prophecy and the specific signs to watch for that match current events. The Bible has already had some 2,000 prophecies that have come true, and there are around 500 more that mostly concern 'end times,' she suggested. There are six different types or areas of the signs-- society, nature, world events, technology, spiritual, and Israel, she listed. Events are speeding up, becoming more violent, and happening closer together, such as earthquakes which have been more destructive and deadly in recent years, she reported.

She also pointed to the potential devastation from volcanoes and supervolcanoes such as the one at Yellowstone, which has a 55-mile long lava pit. The recent cycle of four blood moons, which landed on Jewish feasts was "a Biblical Tetrad" --an extremely rare occurrence that she views as another prophetic omen. Deyo also cited changes in the sun that could lead to another drastic 'Carrington'-type solar storm, actions being taken by the New World Order, the potential for famine, and new wars in the Middle East and Israel. Paranormal Vortexes - Open Lines

"Paranormal investigator Joshua P. Warren explained why Asheville is a paranormal vortex and how you can find such vortexes in your own home. Vortexes are similar to portals, which are places where an imbalance between physical and non-physical worlds allows information and beings to travel back and forth, he explained. A vortex is a larger area where energy flows in and out of the earth, and where we come into contact with strange phenomena more easily, Warren added. The part of the United States between the 35th and 37th parallels is an area known for paranormal activity likely related to vortexes and includes Area 51, the Joplin Spook Light, and Dulce, New Mexico, where an alien military base is said to be located, he revealed.

North Carolina falls within in this vortex-filled boundary as well and has a rich history of weird goings-ons, from the lost colony of Roanoke to the strangeness of Asheville to the Devil's Tramping Ground, where nothing will grow in the soil. Warren suggested it may be possible for a person to physically slip through a vortex and emerge into a version of reality similar to our own but slightly different, though more likely the vortex would induce a mental experience. "It's possible that someone listening to this program right now has [a portal]... in the basement of his or her house," he said. According to Warren, one can test for vortexes by using a straight piece of wire capped with an aluminum foil ball. Hold the wire, place the ball between eyes, and walk the property. If you enter a vortex, you'll have some kind of mental experience, he noted.

Warren shared details about North Carolina's Brown Mountain Lights, where anomalous 'ghost lights' have been seen for decades. He commented on recent news about skeptic Dr. Daniel Caton of Appalachian State University whose research team recently captured undeniable video evidence of the light phenomenon. Warren thinks the lights are a byproduct of a vortex or portal in the area. He also reported on a story about odd beings who live inside a crystal cave in Brown Mountain. Next, she spoke with Dr. John Brandenburg, who will be giving a lecture at the 2016 Space Conference on his theory that a thriving civilization on Mars was completely destroyed some time in the very distant past. Brandenburg has detected two radioactive isotopes in the atmosphere of the Red Planet that he says could only have come from a massive, planet-killing pair of nuclear devices. He believes that some people in the space program suspected this 40 years ago, and thinks that "there is going to be a discussion of this in public" very soon.

Gary Byrne served in federal law enforcement for nearly thirty years, in the U.S. Air Force Security Police, the Uniformed Division of the Secret Service, and most recently as a Federal Air Marshal.

In 1995 Byrne received an evaluation from his superiors in the Secret Service, praising him as a “mature and dependable employee who is an exceptionally well informed member of West Wing detail” and “consistently performs his duties in a highly efficient and conscientious manner.” In March 1996, the Secret Service issued a letter of commendation on “the professionalism and the knowledge displayed by OfficerByrne.”

In July 1996, Byrne received a letter of appreciation from the Secret Service for his “commitment, dedication and professional performance.” Because of his direct knowledge and access to the Clintons -- including being assigned outside of the Oval Office for three years --Byrne was subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury during the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

In 1999 Byrne received a certificate of appreciation from the Secret Service for“outstanding support of our protective mission” during the NATO summit in Washington, D.C. Gary served as a Federal Air Marshal until his retirement in early 2016. Praised by the acting director of the Federal Air Marshal Service for his "distinguished career," "commitment to public service" and "contributions to facilitate a professional law enforcement environment."


Richard also welcomes Cami Andersen an investigator of the supernatural to the program. I relate to many of the things you wrote. Not long ago, I posted that rather than the rabbit holes I’d visit, visit, visit, I now throw carrots down them.

Ugh! Some of the things I believed and passed along... I catch myself tossing apologies to the winds to anyone I may have mislead or caused pain with the nonsense and fear porn.

Helping others is also helping myself and allowing them to do the same. I listen and offer when appropriate. So far, not many stretch with follow up comments or questions; even that I understand better.

These days, I feel like I beginner, only smarter about my choices of what to explore. I noticed my retention wasn’t great. It bothered me for awhile. The difference now is that I see it’s something I don’t need for the journey. And a lot of what I thought I needed is G-O-N-E.

My joy is being an ordinary human and uncovering the natural traits that I once believed were extraordinary gifts. If it's like it's been...then in a month, six months, a year from now, I'll not recognize me. It's weird how that works.

Oh, I just got that tickle in the belly. And she still smiling.

Could fairies exist? Rapper's snap shows bizarre tiny winged beings in Welsh countryside


A member of a Welsh rap group believes that he inadvertently photographed a swarm of fairies while going for a walk in a field with his dog.

John Rutledge says that he noticed the anomalies when later looking at the pictures and became convinced that he had captured the legendary elemental entities on film.

The seven somewhat-translucent flying 'objects' are about one-and-a-half inches long and appear to possess arms, legs, and wings.

Amazed by the image, Rutledge has expressed certainty that the photograph constitutes definitive proof that fairies exist.

Skeptical observers, however, disagree with his conclusion and suggest that the 'fairies' are actually just insects that look 'magical' due to the lighting and angle of the photograph.

It also should be noted that the Rutledge purportedly took the image while looking for places to record his podcast series about myths and mysteries.

Such a coincidence is almost certain to raise suspicions that the photograph is merely a clever way of promoting his podcast.

Whether the image is a legitimate glimpse of the iconic creatures or an elaborate ruse is open to debate, but it's safe the say that the enigmatic photograph serves to spark the imagination of anyone who has ever wondered if fairies might be real.

He claims that a drop in cholesterol intake from dairy sources has caused Alzheimer’s disease to reach record proportions, and why he is finishing a book entitled "A Stick Of Butter A Day Keeps The Doctor Away." To protect against cancer, Wallach says that we need to stop eating processed meats, vegetable oils, and gluten, and supplement the diet with his products, such as the Healthy Brain And Heart Pack. He believes that "your best friend when you have cancer is your immune system" and anything that strengthens it will ultimately help, especially if the disease is diagnosed early."

"In part one, former crime reporter and sports writer Bob Mitchell discussed the incredible story of John Titor II, who began traveling through time on missions for a highly-secretive arm of the U.S. Air Force in 1979 and served as commander of the 177th Time Travel Division from the years 2030 to 2036 at Area 51. Mitchell said that the U.S. Government has the ability to "change the timeline" of history and that time travel technology has been in use since at least the 1970s. At 30 minutes into the program, Col. John Titor joined the program to discuss the differences between himself and the original who contacted Art Bell in 2001. "Titor II" as his co-authors call him, says he is the product of a cloning project and was given the name John Titor by his superiors.

Titor claims that he has traveled forward to the year 2100 and back as far as 200 BC. He also says that a third world war is coming and that "millions will die" in this conflict, which will start when Iran attacks the east coast of the U.S. The retaliation will be with radioactive weapons which will plunge the world into a nuclear winter. Titor said that he either has or might be able to change things to keep this from happening, and that the details were in the new book. Titor and Mitchell’s co-author Jason Quitt joined the program in the second hour. After knowing Titor for a few months, he said that Titor "confirmed some things to me that I’ve never told anyone else about my personal journey to those time zones" since he claims to have traveled astrally through time. Near the end of the segment, Titor said that he has a friend who is a grey alien and likes to watch football and eat Doritos."

"In part two, scholar, hermetic magician, and teacher of ritual and ceremonial magic, Marcus Katz discussed his work with tarot, kabbalah, ceremonial magic, Aleister Crowley, and ritual. Katz says he was first alerted to the possibilities of magic when he was assigned to try dowsing as a child at school and located an underground water main which was completely buried and invisible from above. He says that the Western Occult or Esoteric tradition is essentially a "way of exhausting all possibilities of what is real and what is true" and encourages people to question reality and what has been presented to us as reality. He further stated that after 35 years of practice, he has realized that "there’s something definitely amiss with our concept of time" and how we think causality works.

Katz then discussed using a tarot card deck as more of a tool for personal change than a simple way of telling fortunes. He said that readings can be done that are designed to change behavior over a period of time by drawing cards and using their symbolism as clues about how to proceed. As for casting spells for negative purposes, such as to harm others, Katz said that bad spells tend to affect the magician in a negative way "rather than the person it is directed towards." In general, he contends, spells or rituals that affect others tend to be far less reliable than ones that are focused on the self. Concluding, Katz said that the main idea of the practice was to wish for an outcome, but not to get wrapped up in the "lust for results."

Hillary Clinton told FBI agents that she could not recall issues related to her email server at least 26 times, according to an 11-page document released by the FBI on Friday. The Friday before the Labor Day weekend. How appropriate. How special.

Clinton’s memory lapses are frequent during the interview, marked often by agents as “could not recall” and “did not remember.” But the “could not recall” remarks are often related not to long-distant emails, but things she should perhaps definitely recall.

At least 26 times, Clinton couldn’t recall issues raised by the FBI. Clinton told FBI agents she couldn’t even remember any briefing or training by State “related to the retention of federal records or handling of classified information.”

Everything’s Coming Up ‘Max Rose’

The vulgar, overbearing style of the phenomenon called Jerry Lewis has never appealed to me, but hidden in the rafters of his broad, obnoxious brand of comic violence has also been a lurking sensitivity waiting to get out. He’s played a few dramatic roles before, including Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy (1982) and the most eagerly awaited film of his career, which he has never allowed the world to see—an epic of controversy called The Day the Clown Cried (1972) in which he played a clown in Auschwitz who lured little children into the gas chamber. I’d pay real money to see that one. Meanwhile, his wide, varied palette has never been more evident than in Max Rose, a tender showcase for a different kind of Jerry Lewis that utilizes the strengths and frailties of a 90-year-old show business survivor as few films have ever done.

Bulbous and stooped, his touching portrayal of the challenges of old age is beyond expectation. With grainy eyes staring blankly into space, his tongue protruding slightly to show fatigue, Max Rose, a once-famous jazz pianist, is in the December of his years. At 87, after 65 years of marriage, his beloved wife Eva has died, leaving him lost, bewildered, angry and rudderless. Shown in flashbacks, Eva (the elegant, patrician Claire Bloom) was a life partner who gave him life support. Now, struggling with even the most common of household tasks, he can scarcely open a can without her. His estranged son Chris (Kevin Pollak) and loving granddaughter Annie (Kerry Bishé) try to help but meet constant rejection from the cantankerous Max, a psychological portrait of an octogenarian in despair. As the days painfully dwindle, like irritating raindrops on tin, Max gives up on life and moves reluctantly into an assisted living facility where he bonds with another resident (Mort Sahl) and a social worker (Illeana Douglas) tries to interest him in meaningless activities. Then one day, everything changes. While sorting through the mementos his wife left behind, he finds a gift from another man she had hidden since 1959, and it unhinges him. Was Eva unfaithful and their marriage a sham? To keep his mind and body moving, Max tracks down her secret lover, who turns out to be not a rival but just another old man, this one in the terminal stages of emphysema (a wrenching performance by an unrecognizable Dean Stockwell), and Max faces the reality of life vs. death, redemption vs. surrender and acceptance vs. defeat. The ending has elements of schmaltz that I predict will induce mixed reactions.

Max Rose was completed three years ago and unveiled at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival to a scathing critical reception. Variety labeled it “excruciating.” Although far from what I’d call an unqualified artistic triumph, I must disagree with such a harsh assessment. (The film has now been completely recut and is being released in an entirely new version that is different from the one that was shown in Cannes.) Movies about senior citizens usually spell box-office calamity, but I like the way this one treats the fear of aging and life’s inevitable third act with the dignity it deserves. First-time writer-director Daniel Noah lacks the experience necessary to flesh out three-dimensional personalities in less than an hour and a half, but I like the sympathetic way he treats his characters (well played by a uniformly polished cast) without excessive sentimentality. I also applaud the lack of bug-eyed grotesqueness that typifies Jerry Lewis films in general and admire the way he uses his own loss of hearing, eyesight and dexterity to such good advantage. Maybe not a historic achievement but a gentle reminder that age has its advantages at the movies.

Film will premiere on Netflix this fall ...

The trailer for the new Christopher Guest film, Mascots, shows members of his troupe of players hilariously competing to win the "Gold Fluffy," a trophy at the Eighth World Mascot Association Championships, a competition for sports-team mascots.

An anatomically correct donkey, a giant fist and a bizarre pencil-and-sharpener duo, are all presented in Guest's signature deadpan mockumentary. The film chronicles both a backstage look at the awards ceremony and the "drug and sex problems" pervading behind the scenes.

Many of the actors and actresses, which include Jane Lynch, Parker Posey, Fred Willard, Ed Begley, Jr. and others, have appeared in Guest's previous films like Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show. Guest wrote the picture with actor Jim Piddock, who has appeared in The Prestige and Austin Powers in Goldmember among others; he also wrote the story for The Man, which starred Samuel L. Jackson and Eugene Levy.

The film will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next weekend and will come out globally on Netflix and in a limited theatrical release on October 13th.

"Like many people, I grew up immersed in the so-called “extra-terrestrial hypothesis” popularized during the 1990s by shows like “Sightings”, “Unsolved Mysteries”, and the – horrifying at the time – adaptation of Whitley Strieber’s Communion. I huddled under the sheets in my bedroom, scared out of my wits every single night that I would abducted by the Greys, spirited away to a UFO where I would be cut, probed, prodded, and experimented upon. I had nightmares about their scowling, almond-eyed faces. I had triumphant dreams where I fought back, tore them limb from limb with my nine year old hands, rejoiced in their fear and inhuman screams. The idea that Earth was under constant assault from alien forces, perhaps even guided and supported by our very government, was a given to me. I would lie on my back in my driveway every night, looking for strange lights in the sky, and would tell my teachers at school about the grand conspiracy being perpetrated against the human race.

And then, tired of my constant nightmares and inability to get a good night’s sleep, my parents wisely banned me from watching anything UFO or alien related. No more “Sightings”, no more “Unsolved Mysteries”. For a while, I forgot about those huge black eyes and strange lights zooming around in the night sky. However, this changed in the sixth grade, when I made friends with a new girl at school who told me that, without a doubt, she had been abducted by aliens and gave me a detailed account of her experiences. Suddenly, the whole top blew off again. The seminal conspiracy television show “The X-Files” debuted, and my friend and I watched it every single week. I began thinking about aliens again. Remembering the film adaptation of Communion, I went to the local library the summer before 7th grade and found they had a copy. I devoured it, always making sure to turn the book over every night so I wouldn’t wake up and see that face staring at me in the middle of the night.

Communion was an important book for me in a lot of ways. First and foremost, it planted the idea that perhaps the strange kidnapping creatures that Whitley and others were encountering were not from another planet at all. Strieber never refers to them as such, in fact going to great lengths to avoid making that statement. Secondly, I read Communion at around the same time I had my occult awakening, when I came into contact with both Wiccan and Kabbalistic ritual materials. Several of my close friends were dabbling in the occult, and I saw a heavy occult symbolism in the experiences that Whitley went through, and in the phenomena at large. I started to see cracks in the extra-terrestrial hypothesis.

What tore those cracks wide open, and shattered the ETH forever, however, was John Keel’s unparalleled work The Mothman Prophecies. My dad had an old, ragged copy of The Mothman Prophecies that I stole from him and had been reading, off and on, since I was in the third grade. Having little context for the book when I was that young, I simply enjoyed reading stories about monsters and UFOs. But, when I combined Keel’s thoughts on the phenomena found in Mothman with the skepticism introduced by Communion, I finally realized that the extra-terrestrial hypothesis, at least in the sense that aliens were travelling to this world in nuts-and-bolts spacecraft and doing experiments on human beings, was bogus.

In particular, Keel makes the following statement about the messages of UFO occupants in Chapter 12 of The Mothman Prophecies:


Even more interesting is the fact that the messages received by psychics everywhere bear remarkable similarities in content, even in phrasing. I have researched obscure contactee type books written two and three hundred years ago and have found the same identical messages and phraseology were prevalent then. Since much of this literature is very obscure and hard to find, and since many of our psychics and contactees are poorly read, it is doubtful if this is a question of fakers repeating the earlier material. Rather, it seems as if there is a phonograph in the sky endlessly repeating the same material generation after generation as if there were a crack in the record.

I started to see the similarities in messages presented to contactees such as Woodrow Derenberger and others was simply a repackaging of the ideas and messages presented to the prophets and shamans since the beginning of human history.

Jacques Vallée’s groundbreaking 1979 book Messengers of Deception proposes the idea that the UFO contact phenomena is, in a large part, a method of control exerted by some other intelligence in an attempt to manipulate human activity and culture through deception and myth creation.

Two passages from William Burroughs’ 1975 essay “The Limits of Control” stand out in particular when applied to the UFO contact phenomena. Consider the following:


But words are still the principal instruments of control. Suggestions are words. Persuasions are words. Orders are words. No control machine so far devised can operate without words, and any control machine which attempts to do so relying entirely on external force or entirely on physical control of the mind will soon encounter the limits of control.

A basic impasse of all control machines is this: Control needs time in which to exercise control. Because control also needs opposition or acquiescence; otherwise, it ceases to be control. I control a hypnotized subject (at least partially); I control a slave, a dog, a worker; but if I establish complete control somehow, as by implanting electrodes in the brain, then my subject is little more than a tape recorder, a camera, a robot. You don’t control a tape recorder – you use it. Consider the distinction, and the impasse implicit here. All control systems try to make control as tight as possible, but at the same time, if they succeeded completely there would be nothing left to control.

So much of the UFO contact phenomena seems to revolve around these attempts by some unknown force to guide humanity through some grandiose message. Much of the time this message seems to fall into two categories – that mankind must treat others with kindness and respect, or that mankind must prevent the planet from being destroyed by some force. In the case of the latter, this force seems to change depending on the anxieties (or perhaps the honest threats) of the era. In the atomic nightmare of the 40s and 50s, the message warned of imminent nuclear destruction should mankind continue to proliferate atomic weapons. Later, in the 80s and 90s, contactees were warned of environmental dangers, being told that mankind was on the path to destroy this planet through climate change. Whatever this intelligence is, at least on a surface level, it would appear to have our best interests in mind. But why?

One of the aspects of the contact phenomena is how it breeds hierarchy and creates prophets – or cult leaders – that bring humans together and create structure through which civilization and culture can develop. Terrence McKenna postulated that religion as a whole was inspired by the effects of entheogens such as psilocybin. It’s to be noted that many of the UFO contact experiences are similar to the visions experienced by users of enthogenic substances. While early homo sapiens likely had hierarchical structure similar to the structures existing in other primates, it appears that these contacts with – for lack of a better term – a Spirit World through either the use of entheogenic drugs or UFO contact style encounters created a new hierarchy: the shaman. Through the use of religion, these shamans – liaisons between common man and the spirits – were able to exercise control not strictly based on pure materialistic qualities. And through the revelation of magical techniques, these shamans were able to perform miracles and effect change in the environment in accordance with will, further cementing their structure, a structure revealed to them and guided by the hand of these extra-human intelligences.

While it doesn’t really touch on the more esoteric ideas I’ve presented here, you’d be well-served by checking out the excellent BBC World Service series “The Forum” and their four part series on hierarchy in humans. I’m placing the link in the sources at the end of the article.

So it appears that some external (alien, if you will) intelligence that may or may not be extra-terrestrial in origin has been subtly manipulating mankind’s social strucutres for the majority of human history through hallucinatory encounters with otherworldly beings and strange lights in the sky. These encounters are perhaps the only way this intelligence can communicate with humanity. Perhaps it has as much trouble trying to talk to us as we would have attempting to communicate with a hive of ants.

This co-creation aspect to the phenomena is vastly interesting to me. Vallée’s other groundbreaking work, Passport to Magonia, exposed thoroughly that UFO contact phenomena had been going on as long as there had been recorded history. He showed that the phenomena melded itself and manifested using the imagery relevant to the era. It’s not just that people in the 1400s could only describe a UFO as a flying ship, they literally saw a flying ship – anchor, sails, and sailors included. It’s not that they misinterpreted a space alien for a winged angel, they actually saw a winged angel. Just as people saw mysterious flying airships in the 1800s, so did observers in the 1950s see the flying saucers popularized by their movies and television shows. The vast array of monsters and weirdos present in the UFO contacts of the 1950s, 60s and 70s is because there was no central meme that pervaded popular culture. It wasn’t until the ubiquitous image of the Grey was thrust into the forefront of the experience by the Betty and Barney Hill case, the works of Bud Hopkins and Strieber’s cover for Communion did the meme of the Grey solidify and dominate the narrative. I don’t believe that the phenomena manifests itself using these memes intentionally, but rather these are the building material it has to pull from human consciousness in order to manifest. Again the analogy of the human trying to communicate with the ant. Our only way to get the ant to move in the way we want it to move is to gently nudge it, scare it perhaps, or shine a magnifying glass that’s amplifying the rays of the sun.

But again, why? Why do these intelligences have this invested interest in humanity in particular?

Many ufologists and researches endlessly concern themselves with the “how” of the phenomena. While I also find the “how” extremely compelling and have plenty of my own theories about it, ultimately I don’t believe that’s the important question to ask. It’s quite possible that this question is fundamentally unanswerable. Maybe trying to determine how the phenomena manifests or affects human consciousness in the way it does is akin to attempting to explain to a two-dimensional being what a sphere is. We utterly lack a context for the information.

A better question, I think, is “why”. Why would a supernatural, possibly external intelligence be attempting to communicate with us? Is it perhaps out of pure curiosity? We keep pets such as dogs and cats and speak to them, but they are fundamentally incapable of understanding our intentions or language, except on some empathic level. Although, given the high strangeness of the phenomena at large, perhaps it’s fallacy to believe there is any logic to it that a human being can understand. Even further along that path, there’s no reason the intelligence behind it has to have a motive at all – to think otherwise is to anthropomorphize a phenomena that is likely anything but human. I’ll leave you with a quote by Damon Knight – famously misattributed to Charles Fort by Keel in his closing line to The Mothman Prophecies – that still resonates with me, and that I try to remember whenever I explore this world:


If there is a universal mind, must it be sane?"

His name is Control

"Like many people, I grew up immersed in the so-called “extra-terrestrial hypothesis” popularized during the 1990s by shows like “Sightings”, “Unsolved Mysteries”, and the – horrifying at the time – adaptation of Whitley Strieber’s Communion. I huddled under the sheets in my bedroom, scared out of my wits every single night that I would abducted by the Greys, spirited away to a UFO where I would be cut, probed, prodded, and experimented upon. I had nightmares about their scowling, almond-eyed faces. I had triumphant dreams where I fought back, tore them limb from limb with my nine year old hands, rejoiced in their fear and inhuman screams. The idea that Earth was under constant assault from alien forces, perhaps even guided and supported by our very government, was a given to me. I would lie on my back in my driveway every night, looking for strange lights in the sky, and would tell my teachers at school about the grand conspiracy being perpetrated against the human race.

And then, tired of my constant nightmares and inability to get a good night’s sleep, my parents wisely banned me from watching anything UFO or alien related. No more “Sightings”, no more “Unsolved Mysteries”. For a while, I forgot about those huge black eyes and strange lights zooming around in the night sky. However, this changed in the sixth grade, when I made friends with a new girl at school who told me that, without a doubt, she had been abducted by aliens and gave me a detailed account of her experiences. Suddenly, the whole top blew off again. The seminal conspiracy television show “The X-Files” debuted, and my friend and I watched it every single week. I began thinking about aliens again. Remembering the film adaptation of Communion, I went to the local library the summer before 7th grade and found they had a copy. I devoured it, always making sure to turn the book over every night so I wouldn’t wake up and see that face staring at me in the middle of the night.

Communion was an important book for me in a lot of ways. First and foremost, it planted the idea that perhaps the strange kidnapping creatures that Whitley and others were encountering were not from another planet at all. Strieber never refers to them as such, in fact going to great lengths to avoid making that statement. Secondly, I read Communion at around the same time I had my occult awakening, when I came into contact with both Wiccan and Kabbalistic ritual materials. Several of my close friends were dabbling in the occult, and I saw a heavy occult symbolism in the experiences that Whitley went through, and in the phenomena at large. I started to see cracks in the extra-terrestrial hypothesis.

What tore those cracks wide open, and shattered the ETH forever, however, was John Keel’s unparalleled work The Mothman Prophecies. My dad had an old, ragged copy of The Mothman Prophecies that I stole from him and had been reading, off and on, since I was in the third grade. Having little context for the book when I was that young, I simply enjoyed reading stories about monsters and UFOs. But, when I combined Keel’s thoughts on the phenomena found in Mothman with the skepticism introduced by Communion, I finally realized that the extra-terrestrial hypothesis, at least in the sense that aliens were travelling to this world in nuts-and-bolts spacecraft and doing experiments on human beings, was bogus.

In particular, Keel makes the following statement about the messages of UFO occupants in Chapter 12 of The Mothman Prophecies:


Even more interesting is the fact that the messages received by psychics everywhere bear remarkable similarities in content, even in phrasing. I have researched obscure contactee type books written two and three hundred years ago and have found the same identical messages and phraseology were prevalent then. Since much of this literature is very obscure and hard to find, and since many of our psychics and contactees are poorly read, it is doubtful if this is a question of fakers repeating the earlier material. Rather, it seems as if there is a phonograph in the sky endlessly repeating the same material generation after generation as if there were a crack in the record.

I started to see the similarities in messages presented to contactees such as Woodrow Derenberger and others was simply a repackaging of the ideas and messages presented to the prophets and shamans since the beginning of human history.

Jacques Vallée’s groundbreaking 1979 book Messengers of Deception proposes the idea that the UFO contact phenomena is, in a large part, a method of control exerted by some other intelligence in an attempt to manipulate human activity and culture through deception and myth creation.

Two passages from William Burroughs’ 1975 essay “The Limits of Control” stand out in particular when applied to the UFO contact phenomena. Consider the following:


But words are still the principal instruments of control. Suggestions are words. Persuasions are words. Orders are words. No control machine so far devised can operate without words, and any control machine which attempts to do so relying entirely on external force or entirely on physical control of the mind will soon encounter the limits of control.

A basic impasse of all control machines is this: Control needs time in which to exercise control. Because control also needs opposition or acquiescence; otherwise, it ceases to be control. I control a hypnotized subject (at least partially); I control a slave, a dog, a worker; but if I establish complete control somehow, as by implanting electrodes in the brain, then my subject is little more than a tape recorder, a camera, a robot. You don’t control a tape recorder – you use it. Consider the distinction, and the impasse implicit here. All control systems try to make control as tight as possible, but at the same time, if they succeeded completely there would be nothing left to control.

So much of the UFO contact phenomena seems to revolve around these attempts by some unknown force to guide humanity through some grandiose message. Much of the time this message seems to fall into two categories – that mankind must treat others with kindness and respect, or that mankind must prevent the planet from being destroyed by some force. In the case of the latter, this force seems to change depending on the anxieties (or perhaps the honest threats) of the era. In the atomic nightmare of the 40s and 50s, the message warned of imminent nuclear destruction should mankind continue to proliferate atomic weapons. Later, in the 80s and 90s, contactees were warned of environmental dangers, being told that mankind was on the path to destroy this planet through climate change. Whatever this intelligence is, at least on a surface level, it would appear to have our best interests in mind. But why?

One of the aspects of the contact phenomena is how it breeds hierarchy and creates prophets – or cult leaders – that bring humans together and create structure through which civilization and culture can develop. Terrence McKenna postulated that religion as a whole was inspired by the effects of entheogens such as psilocybin. It’s to be noted that many of the UFO contact experiences are similar to the visions experienced by users of enthogenic substances. While early homo sapiens likely had hierarchical structure similar to the structures existing in other primates, it appears that these contacts with – for lack of a better term – a Spirit World through either the use of entheogenic drugs or UFO contact style encounters created a new hierarchy: the shaman. Through the use of religion, these shamans – liaisons between common man and the spirits – were able to exercise control not strictly based on pure materialistic qualities. And through the revelation of magical techniques, these shamans were able to perform miracles and effect change in the environment in accordance with will, further cementing their structure, a structure revealed to them and guided by the hand of these extra-human intelligences.

While it doesn’t really touch on the more esoteric ideas I’ve presented here, you’d be well-served by checking out the excellent BBC World Service series “The Forum” and their four part series on hierarchy in humans. I’m placing the link in the sources at the end of the article.

So it appears that some external (alien, if you will) intelligence that may or may not be extra-terrestrial in origin has been subtly manipulating mankind’s social strucutres for the majority of human history through hallucinatory encounters with otherworldly beings and strange lights in the sky. These encounters are perhaps the only way this intelligence can communicate with humanity. Perhaps it has as much trouble trying to talk to us as we would have attempting to communicate with a hive of ants.

This co-creation aspect to the phenomena is vastly interesting to me. Vallée’s other groundbreaking work, Passport to Magonia, exposed thoroughly that UFO contact phenomena had been going on as long as there had been recorded history. He showed that the phenomena melded itself and manifested using the imagery relevant to the era. It’s not just that people in the 1400s could only describe a UFO as a flying ship, they literally saw a flying ship – anchor, sails, and sailors included. It’s not that they misinterpreted a space alien for a winged angel, they actually saw a winged angel. Just as people saw mysterious flying airships in the 1800s, so did observers in the 1950s see the flying saucers popularized by their movies and television shows. The vast array of monsters and weirdos present in the UFO contacts of the 1950s, 60s and 70s is because there was no central meme that pervaded popular culture. It wasn’t until the ubiquitous image of the Grey was thrust into the forefront of the experience by the Betty and Barney Hill case, the works of Bud Hopkins and Strieber’s cover for Communion did the meme of the Grey solidify and dominate the narrative. I don’t believe that the phenomena manifests itself using these memes intentionally, but rather these are the building material it has to pull from human consciousness in order to manifest. Again the analogy of the human trying to communicate with the ant. Our only way to get the ant to move in the way we want it to move is to gently nudge it, scare it perhaps, or shine a magnifying glass that’s amplifying the rays of the sun.

But again, why? Why do these intelligences have this invested interest in humanity in particular?

Many ufologists and researches endlessly concern themselves with the “how” of the phenomena. While I also find the “how” extremely compelling and have plenty of my own theories about it, ultimately I don’t believe that’s the important question to ask. It’s quite possible that this question is fundamentally unanswerable. Maybe trying to determine how the phenomena manifests or affects human consciousness in the way it does is akin to attempting to explain to a two-dimensional being what a sphere is. We utterly lack a context for the information.

A better question, I think, is “why”. Why would a supernatural, possibly external intelligence be attempting to communicate with us? Is it perhaps out of pure curiosity? We keep pets such as dogs and cats and speak to them, but they are fundamentally incapable of understanding our intentions or language, except on some empathic level. Although, given the high strangeness of the phenomena at large, perhaps it’s fallacy to believe there is any logic to it that a human being can understand. Even further along that path, there’s no reason the intelligence behind it has to have a motive at all – to think otherwise is to anthropomorphize a phenomena that is likely anything but human. I’ll leave you with a quote by Damon Knight – famously misattributed to Charles Fort by Keel in his closing line to The Mothman Prophecies – that still resonates with me, and that I try to remember whenever I explore this world:


If there is a universal mind, must it be sane?"

"In the first half, author and publisher Richard A. Lertzman discussed Dr. Max Jacobson, whom the Secret Service under JFK code-named "Dr. Feelgood." He developed a unique "energy formula" which contained methamphetamine and altered the paths of some of the 20th century’s most iconic figures, including President and Jackie Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, and Frank Sinatra. Dr. Jacobson, who immigrated out of Nazi Germany, had trained with Karl Jung, and first developed a treatment for multiple sclerosis using methamphetamine. His injection formula that became popular with writers, celebrities, and politicians, not only included amphetamine, but such bizarre ingredients as sheep sperm, monkey gonads, human placenta, and steroids, Lertzman detailed.

The concoction "gave people instant power, instant energy, and took away their pain," but Dr. Jacobson never told patients what was actually in the formula. "In the latter half, Robert Muir-Wood, a professor, and chief research officer of Risk Management Solutions, talked about some of the most tragic natural disasters and how human complacency and poor planning contribute to them. He addressed what could be improved, and areas which are ripe for catastrophe if nothing changes. For instance, 5.4 million people in Washington state live in a zone endangered by an impending 9.0 Cascadia megaquake. Despite the warnings, Washington still lags behind all other quake prone states, lacking seismic safety laws for schools, hospitals, and vulnerable buildings, according to a report. Buildings made out of cement in countries outside of the US are particularly susceptible to seismic damage, he added.

In Cuba, Fidel Castro set up a hurricane-preparation plan that is successful in reducing casualties, switching off electricity and picking the crops before the storm makes landfall, Muir-Wood reported. Much was learned from the failures after Hurricane Katrina, he noted, such as how the shipping canal (built to improve trade) actually provided the conduit for the storm surge getting into New Orleans. Muir-Wood also cited the case of a self-reliant 10-year old English girl who was on the beach in 2004 in Thailand, and warned beach goers that a tsunami was approaching. She had recently learned in school that water receding was the sign of an imminent tsunami, and it's estimated that she saved around 100 lives that day."

Edward Snowden has rounded on his hosts, attacking the Kremlin’s human rights record and implicating Russia in two of the US government’s latest major security hacks.

In a Lunch with the FT — carried below — he complained Moscow had “gone very far, in ways that are completely unnecessary, costly and corrosive to individual and collective rights” and added that his greatest loyalty was still to the US.

He described the leak last month of NSA espionage tools, potentially by Russia as an “implicit threat” to the US government. Efforts by hackers called the Shadow Brokers to auction off NSA computer code used to break into foreign networks were an attempt to show Washington how vulnerable it was, he added.

Snowden insisted that all dealings with Russian officials were conducted by his lawyer. “I don’t have a lot of ties to Russia and that’s by design because, as crazy as it sounds, I still plan to leave.”

Edward Snowden is not the easiest lunch date. The former National Security Agency operative doesn’t fancy talking in a Moscow restaurant so — via an intermediary — we settle on meeting in my hotel and risk the room service. He will present himself at the agreed time. That’s all I need to know.

In the end he’s 20 minutes late, dressed casually in black jeans and black V-neck, buttoned-up T-shirt carrying a pair of unbranded dark glasses. He eyes up the small, dimly lit room 203 of the Golden Apple “boutique” hotel — half an hour’s gentle stroll from the Kremlin — with the look of a man who has spent too much time in such places.

How does it compare with room 1014 of the Mira Hotel in Hong Kong, where in June 2013 — having shared many of the NSA’s most closely guarded secrets with a few handpicked journalists — Snowden spent a week as the most wanted man in the world?

“A bit smaller, but not dissimilar,” he says. “The Hong Kong room had a glass bathroom wall here,” he adds, pointing to a bland wall featuring an obligatory hotel watercolour.

The interior of the Mira hotel room is about to become much better known with the US release next week of Oliver Stone’s biopic about Snowden, which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the whistleblower’s role. Much of the tensest, most claustrophobic action is filmed in a reconstruction of room 1014 built inside a hangar-like studio in Munich.

During that intense week three years ago, Snowden and two Guardian reporters worked on those first stories disclosing the full capabilities that intelligence agencies can now deploy against populations. When he revealed himself as the source, he was acclaimed as a hero by some — others recommended the electric chair. I had never met him and was entirely reliant on the judgment of our veteran reporter, Ewen MacAskill, who rang to report (in pre-arranged code owing something to Hollywood) that “the Guinness is good”.

I first saw his face about an hour before the rest of the world, when MacAskill filed his video interview to New York. Like everyone else there I was struck by his stubbled youth and impressed by his thoughtful articulacy. Today, at 33, there’s a touch less stubble, and the hair is a smidgen longer. He says he moves freely around Moscow, seldom recognised, which is surprising since he has changed little since that first picture of him etched itself on our consciousness.

Reading the laminated room-service menu card, complete with English translations, he is tempted by the spicy chicken curry with rice and chilli sauce. I go for the risotto with white mushrooms and a “vinaigrette” salad with herring. Snowden — skinny thin — decides he can’t resist the crab cakes, too. We telephone the order for the food, with mineral water.

He has been unwillingly marooned in Moscow since 2013 when — the subject of a giant manhunt — he was forced to leave Hong Kong. How’s his Russian coming on? He confirms it’s up to ordering in a restaurant, but is reluctant to elaborate. “All my work’s in English. Everybody I talk to I speak to in English,” he says. “I sleep in Russia but I live all around the world. I don’t have a lot of ties to Russia. That’s by design because, as crazy as it sounds, I still plan to leave.”

He lives “mainly” on Eastern Standard Time and spends most of his waking hours online — “but it always has been so”. He admits he misses the “sense of home” represented by America, “but technology overcomes most of that divide. For me, I’m a little bit of an outlier to begin with because, remember, I signed up to go work overseas for the CIA and overseas for the NSA. So it’s really not that much different from the postings that I had for the US.

“The only difference is that I’m still posted overseas and I work for the US but they don’t realise it.” As anyone who follows him on Twitter knows (he follows just one account: the NSA) he is capable of a very dry wit.

He has seen a version of the Stone movie on one of the director’s trips to Moscow, during which Snowden says he would talk to Stone’s co-writer, Kieran Fitzgerald, about “trying to keep the film a little bit closer to being reality”.

“But,” he shrugs, “I know it’s a drama, not a documentary.”

How would he score it out of 10? He avoids a rating. “On the policy questions, which I think are the most important thing for the public understanding, it’s as close to real as you can get in a film.”

He met Gordon-Levitt in Moscow and thought him “an amazing guy . . . we had lunch together, talked for several hours just about everything, our personal lives — what we think about, what we care about. At the time I thought it was just a social visit but, after the fact, he told me that he was actually scoping me out, trying to get my mannerisms.”

Having interviewed Gordon-Levitt’s “Snowden” as part of my own cameo in the film, I can vouch for how well he captures the real thing. Snowden was impressed, too: “His characterisation of me makes me uncomfortable, with the super-deep gravelly voice, but that’s because you never hear your own voice the way other people do, right?”

Was he moved by the film, which in flashback revisits the episodes in his life that led to what he calls his “tortured” decision to engineer the biggest leak of classified documents in history? “There’s always going to be something emotional about seeing something that you did retold as a story by other people. It shows a reflection of how your choices matter to them. Three years later, seeing what we thought was going to be a five-day story still being reported on [makes me think] that I wasn’t crazy.”

. . . 

There’s a knock on the door — which would have caused a spasm of paranoid anxiety in the Mira in 2013. Now it’s just room service. The floor is so small the waiter balances the tray on the bed and Snowden has to perch his chicken curry on his knee. The water is missing. My vinaigrette salad turns out to be cubed beetroot. I avoid the herrings.

Once he nods at the iPhone recording our interview and expands on a point “in case someone is listening”. The first time I met him — to see how he was surviving in his new circumstances in spring 2014 — my iPhone had displayed a giant red thermometer, a sign of alarming overheating. Snowden had observed mildly it was because so many different people were trying to listen in.

He confirms he received no money from the movie, adding of his tangential experience of Hollywood: “When I was told that there was going to be a film made about me, it was a scary thing, one of the most terrifying things I can imagine. But, looking back, I hope it helps, I’m cautiously optimistic that it will.”

He looks back over the period since the revelations and reflects that all three branches of government in the US — Congress, courts, president — have changed their position on mass surveillance. “We can actually start to impose more oversight on spies, rather than giving them a free pass to do whatever simply because we’re scared, which is understandable but clearly not ethical.”

What of subsequent developments in the UK, where the government’s response has been to propose laws that not only sanction, post hoc, the intelligence activities that were revealed to be happening, but extend them? He says it was not his intention to tell the world how to structure their laws, but to give people a voice in the process. “The laws have gotten worse in some countries. France has gone very far, so too, of course, countries like Russia, China. In Britain there’s an authoritarian trend.

“We don’t allow police to enter and search any home. We don’t typically reorder the operation of a free society for the convenience of the police — because that is the definition of a police state,” he says, mopping up the last of the rice. “And yet some spies and officials are trying to persuade us that we should. Now, I would argue there’s no real question that police in a police state would be more effective than those in a free and liberal society where the police operate under tighter constraints. But which one would you rather live in?”

He has finished his curry and pronounces it “quite good”. The crab cakes are abandoned after a bite. “Less good,” he says. We order ice cream — vanilla, strawberry and chocolate for him, sorbet for me. The voice on the phone launches into a complicated explanation of why, with five scoops in all, we can have a discount.

Does he never lose sleep at night wondering whether Isis terrorists might not have gained some useful advantage from the information he disclosed?

Well, firstly, he says, in all the recent European attacks the suspects were known to the authorities, who thus had the ability to target them without having to scoop up everyone else’s data as well. Secondly, he points out, Osama bin Laden stopped using a mobile phone in 1998 — not because of leaks to newspapers but because “there is an aggressive form of Darwinism in terrorist circles. Long before we, the public, know about any of these surveillance measures, they have already known for years because, if they had not, they are already dead.

“But,” he goes on, “let’s say that the newspapers had decided this should not be public. Let’s say the intelligence services had been able to continue using these programs in secret. Would it have stopped any of the terrorist attacks that have occurred in the last three years? There’s no public evidence that that’s the case. In fact, there’s no classified evidence that that’s the case, or else we’d be reading it in the newspapers.”

We move on to talking about stories alleging Russian hacking of the NSA itself and of the Democratic party’s governing body, the Democratic National Committee. The former involved a group calling itself the Shadow Brokers, who threatened to auction very sophisticated alleged NSA surveillance tools. The latter was a collection of DNC emails published — to general embarrassment — by WikiLeaks in July.

The Shadow Broker leak, says Snowden, “doesn’t strike me as a whistleblower: that strikes me as a warning. It’s political messaging being carried out through information disclosure.” And the DNC hack, where, as he observes, the conventional wisdom is that it was the Russians? “This is part of the problem of this surveillance free-for-all that we’re allowing to occur by refusing to moderate our own behaviour. We’ve set a kind of global precedent that anything is possible and nothing is prohibited.

“Now, the fact the DNC got hacked is not surprising and interesting. We’re hacking political parties around the world, so is every country. What makes it interesting is that some of the things taken from this server were published afterwards. That’s quite novel. I think.”

Which makes him think what? “That it’s for political effect.”

He says — as someone who used to try and do this sort of thing to the Chinese — that it would be easy to attribute the hack to whoever had done it. “But this creates a problem because, let’s say, the NSA has the smoking gun that says the Russians hacked the DNC, and they tell us the Russians hacked the DNC, how can we be sure? It presumes a level of trust that no longer exists.”

The ice creams arrive along with an espresso, replacing the first set of dishes on the bed. Snowden spills a bit of chicken curry on the duvet and apologetically mops it up with a towel.

Aren’t we beginning to discover that no digital databases are secure? “We are living through a crisis in computer security the likes of which we’ve never seen,” he says. “But until we solve the fundamental problem, which is that our policy incentivises offence to a greater degree than defence, hacks will continue unpredictably and they will have increasingly larger effects and impacts.”

The answer, he thinks, is that there ought to be some form of liability for negligence in software architecture, such as would apply in the food industry. He adds, drily: “People from my tribe will be extraordinarily mad at me for suggesting regulation in the terms of negligence for software security.”

 . . . 

He has finished his ice cream and declines coffee. Life in Moscow is getting better, he says: “I’m more open now than I’ve been since 2013.” He sees few people — such meetings as this are rare — and divides his time between public speaking (which pays the bills) and devising tools to protect the digital security of journalists. He would rather not go into “the family stuff” or how often he sees Lindsay Mills, his partner, who was left behind in Hawaii when he quit his job for the NSA there and disappeared to Hong Kong.

His American lawyer, Ben Wizner at the American Civil Liberties Union, is reported to be preparing to launch a petition to President Barack Obama to grant Snowden a pardon before he steps down. Snowden will only say: “Of course I hope they’re successful but this has never really been about what happens to me. No matter how the outcome shakes out, it’s something I can live with.”

His chances of a happy ending under President Donald Trump would be zero, I observe. What about under President Hillary Clinton? “You’re trying to drag me into a political quagmire,” he protests. He collects himself, looking intensely at the ground, before sidestepping the question: “I think we should have better choices. We’re a country of 330m people and we seem to be being asked to make a choice between individuals whose lives are defined by scandal. I simply think we should be capable of more.”

If he’s tough on the options in US politics, his willingness to tweet criticism of Russian politics to his 2.3m followers has not gone unnoticed. “A lot of people who care about me tell me to shut up, but if I was married to my own self-interest, I never would have left Hawaii.

“I can’t fix the human rights situation in Russia, and realistically my priority is to fix my own country first, because that’s the one to which I owe the greatest loyalty. But though the chances are it will make no difference, maybe it’ll help.”

He gathers up his dark glasses: it’s time for him to melt into the Moscow crowds. A final question: the Stone film shows him spiriting his trove of secrets out of the NSA on a micro-SD card hidden in a Rubik’s Cube. True or false?

“Oliver confirmed in an interview recently that that’s a touch of the dramatic licence, but that’s only because I wouldn’t confirm or deny how it really happened. I will say that I gave Rubik’s Cubes to everyone in my office, it’s true. I really did that.” And with that he is gone."
