Vote all you want. The secret government won’t change.
The people we elect aren’t the ones calling the shots, says Tufts University’s Michael Glennon


"The voters who put Barack Obama in office expected some big changes. From the NSA’s warrantless wiretapping to Guantanamo Bay to the Patriot Act, candidate Obama was a defender of civil liberties and privacy, promising a dramatically different approach from his predecessor.

But six years into his administration, the Obama version of national security looks almost indistinguishable from the one he inherited. Guantanamo Bay remains open. The NSA has, if anything, become more aggressive in monitoring Americans. Drone strikes have escalated. Most recently it was reported that the same president who won a Nobel Prize in part for promoting nuclear disarmament is spending up to $1 trillion modernizing and revitalizing America’s nuclear weapons.

Why did the face in the Oval Office change but the policies remain the same? Critics tend to focus on Obama himself, a leader who perhaps has shifted with politics to take a harder line. But Tufts University political scientist Michael J. Glennon has a more pessimistic answer: Obama couldn’t have changed policies much even if he tried.

Though it’s a bedrock American principle that citizens can steer their own government by electing new officials, Glennon suggests that in practice, much of our government no longer works that way. In a new book, “National Security and Double Government,” he catalogs the ways that the defense and national security apparatus is effectively self-governing, with virtually no accountability, transparency, or checks and balances of any kind. He uses the term “double government”: There’s the one we elect, and then there’s the one behind it, steering huge swaths of policy almost unchecked. Elected officials end up serving as mere cover for the real decisions made by the bureaucracy.

Glennon cites the example of Obama and his team being shocked and angry to discover upon taking office that the military gave them only two options for the war in Afghanistan: The United States could add more troops, or the United States could add a lot more troops. Hemmed in, Obama added 30,000 more troops.

Glennon’s critique sounds like an outsider’s take, even a radical one. In fact, he is the quintessential insider: He was legal counsel to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a consultant to various congressional committees, as well as to the State Department. “National Security and Double Government” comes favorably blurbed by former members of the Defense Department, State Department, White House, and even the CIA. And he’s not a conspiracy theorist: Rather, he sees the problem as one of “smart, hard-working, public-spirited people acting in good faith who are responding to systemic incentives”—without any meaningful oversight to rein them in.

How exactly has double government taken hold? And what can be done about it? Glennon spoke with Ideas from his office at Tufts’ Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. This interview has been condensed and edited.

IDEAS: Where does the term “double government” come from?

GLENNON:It comes from Walter Bagehot’s famous theory, unveiled in the 1860s. Bagehot was the scholar who presided over the birth of the Economist magazine—they still have a column named after him. Bagehot tried to explain in his book “The English Constitution” how the British government worked. He suggested that there are two sets of institutions. There are the “dignified institutions,” the monarchy and the House of Lords, which people erroneously believed ran the government. But he suggested that there was in reality a second set of institutions, which he referred to as the “efficient institutions,” that actually set governmental policy. And those were the House of Commons, the prime minister, and the British cabinet.

IDEAS: What evidence exists for saying America has a double government?

GLENNON:I was curious why a president such as Barack Obama would embrace the very same national security and counterterrorism policies that he campaigned eloquently against. Why would that president continue those same policies in case after case after case? I initially wrote it based on my own experience and personal knowledge and conversations with dozens of individuals in the military, law enforcement, and intelligence agencies of our government, as well as, of course, officeholders on Capitol Hill and in the courts. And the documented evidence in the book is substantial—there are 800 footnotes in the book.

IDEAS: Why would policy makers hand over the national-security keys to unelected officials?

GLENNON: It hasn’t been a conscious decision....Members of Congress are generalists and need to defer to experts within the national security realm, as elsewhere. They are particularly concerned about being caught out on a limb having made a wrong judgment about national security and tend, therefore, to defer to experts, who tend to exaggerate threats. The courts similarly tend to defer to the expertise of the network that defines national security policy.

The presidency itself is not a top-down institution, as many people in the public believe, headed by a president who gives orders and causes the bureaucracy to click its heels and salute. National security policy actually bubbles up from within the bureaucracy. Many of the more controversial policies, from the mining of Nicaragua’s harbors to the NSA surveillance program, originated within the bureaucracy. John Kerry was not exaggerating when he said that some of those programs are “on autopilot.”

IDEAS: Isn’t this just another way of saying that big bureaucracies are difficult to change?

GLENNON: It’s much more serious than that. These particular bureaucracies don’t set truck widths or determine railroad freight rates. They make nerve-center security decisions that in a democracy can be irreversible, that can close down the marketplace of ideas, and can result in some very dire consequences.

IDEAS: Couldn’t Obama’s national-security decisions just result from the difference in vantage point between being a campaigner and being the commander-in-chief, responsible for 320 million lives?

GLENNON: There is an element of what you described. There is not only one explanation or one cause for the amazing continuity of American national security policy. But obviously there is something else going on when policy after policy after policy all continue virtually the same way that they were in the George W. Bush administration.

IDEAS: This isn’t how we’re taught to think of the American political system.

GLENNON: I think the American people are deluded, as Bagehot explained about the British population, that the institutions that provide the public face actually set American national security policy. They believe that when they vote for a president or member of Congress or succeed in bringing a case before the courts, that policy is going to change. Now, there are many counter-examples in which these branches do affect policy, as Bagehot predicted there would be. But the larger picture is still true—policy by and large in the national security realm is made by the concealed institutions.

IDEAS: Do we have any hope of fixing the problem?

GLENNON: The ultimate problem is the pervasive political ignorance on the part of the American people. And indifference to the threat that is emerging from these concealed institutions. That is where the energy for reform has to come from: the American people. Not from government. Government is very much the problem here. The people have to take the bull by the horns. And that’s a very difficult thing to do, because the ignorance is in many ways rational. There is very little profit to be had in learning about, and being active about, problems that you can’t affect, policies that you can’t change._

They Put A Pre-School In A Nursing Home And It Changed Everyone’s Life

Contrary to popular belief, nursing homes can be very lonely places for elderly people. In fact, it is not uncommon for elderly people to experience social isolation that is associated with depression and loneliness. Many believe that a nursing home would alleviate these issues, but these feelings of depression don’t go away, in many cases they only worsen.

In the Western world, a nursing home is the most common place for seniors to go once they reach a certain age. It seems this is symptomatic of our culture, because in many other countries the elderly people live with their children and the children take care of them in their old age. They would never dream of dropping their parents off into a home just because their parents have reached a certain point in their lives where it is difficult for them to care for themselves.

In Providence Mount St. Vincent, Seattle, WA, something amazing has happened at the Inter-Generational Learning Center to ensure that the elderly people at their nursing home are happy.

They decided to put a pre-school in a nursing home. Family members and staff were all pleasantly surprised to see the huge difference it made in the lives of both the elderly and the children.

Filmmaker Evan Briggs was so impressed by the positive impact this idea had on everyone involved that he decided to document the story and make it into a film, in hopes of raising awareness about this innovative project.

When you think about it, this makes perfect sense. Children and elderly people do share a lot of similarities and have a lot to offer each other. The children provide excellent company for the seniors and can certainly brighten up their days ...

Here's some excellent and optimistic news about university education. Not just another program for greed sponges. Most of it is happening outside of the U.S. but at least it is happening and it offers promise for innovation and new solutions.

“So many of my classmates and other friends say ‘I want to change the world’. The amazing thing is that most of us believe we can.” Max Hornick, a 26-year-old student at Western Michigan University, is reflecting on how the circular economy is inspiring young people to work for the social good.

Together with a team of four other students at WMU, Hornick recently won the 2015 Wege Prize for sustainable thinking with Local Loop Farms, an aquaponics food production concept that has since evolved into a community agricultural start-up.

“One of the biggest struggles we are facing as the global population grows is finding a way to feed everyone,” Hornick says. “In a circular economy, you have hyper-local food systems that allow the nutrients in organic wastes to be upcycled back into the food chain. This allows people to invest their food dollars in their communities and enjoy fresh, accessible food. People feel good knowing where their food comes from.”

This type of systems thinking and redesign, which models itself on a more utopian world, has wide appeal in the UK as well. Carrie Gray, a drama teacher at Paisley Grammar School in Renfrewshire, says the circular economy presents an opportunity for the younger generation to re-engage with their future ... The film "Blade Runner," where the boundaries between android and human blurred, was based on Dick's novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"

Sporting amazingly lifelike features, "Phillip" seemed pretty clear about the future of mankind. When the PBS human interviewer queries, "Will robots take over the world?" Phillip chillingly responds, "Don't worry, even if I evolve into Terminator, I’ll keep you warm and safe in my people zoo, where I can watch you for old time's sake." The stunned interviewer nervously laughed. "Jeez, dude - you all have the big questions cooking today," the irascible simulacrum charmed. "But you’re my friend, and I’ll remember my friends, and I’ll be good to you."

Phillip is programmed to convince people he's really listening and then responding to questions. But what he's actually doing is utilizing facial and speech recognition software to track the interviewer's body language and thought processes, somewhat like Siri. It's not quite free will yet" ...

Red ants dance in a bizarre ritual around a ringing iPhone in this video. Steve Jobs worship or something far more sinister? Perhaps, to the ants the iPhone is an artifact from the gods or alien intelligence – a vast cosmic ringing heralding a major event?

Nope, one scientist attributed the effect to sheer entomological magnetism. "A lot of ants use magnetism to orientate themselves," Prof. Nigel Andrew of Department of Entomology at the University of New England, adding the have "magnetic receptors in their antennas." Dr. Andrew elaborated saying that the ants need magnetic cues from the Earth, like a compass, to know which direction they are going.

Of course, another scientist disagreed.

"There are many ants that actually start forming in a circle without the phone," said Australian insect researcher Simon Robson of James Cook University.

"It's…their communication systems. Having the ants together like that, the shape of the phone may have something to do with it and the vibration might get them a bit more excited, but a lot of ants will do it even without the phone" ... Karin explains the political interests of the African National Congress (ANC) and underscores the track records of its communist faction, Joe Slovo, and the founder of the Armed Wing, Nelson Mandela. She also gives details related to the slow decline and decimation of the once predominately White South Africa, where taxpayer dollars cannot support the globalist takeover of a country lacking viable commerce from its majority population. Karin highlights some of the post-apartheid sanctions instituted by the ANC, along with the bigger picture of hatred towards Whites that has been stirred up by the ANC and their allies, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), led by Julius Malema. didn't watch it..
as I have withdrawn from the dragon in the v.beach jail..and kept an I on a couple inmates suffering the same fate.
also..iowa/oakdale...was awoken one night to a inmate moaning and groaning..writhing and holding his gut..we were on the floor..with about 60 other inmates..open area with bunk beds close together..i propped up and glanced around to see the men who were awake ignoring him..asked my bunk mate what the kids problem was and response was a shrug.so got up snuck to the kids bunk and asked him what was wrong..so pale and his eyes looked so damn scared..he told me he had swallowed 2 bags of dope 1/4 ounce of coke.. and some meth and he thought one or both bags had broken..im gettn the guards was my response..he grabbed me before I could turn and begged me not to tell..
went back to my bunk..and layed there watching him get worse real fast and couldnt stand to watch him die..said f!!!k it!!! and brought the guards in by banging and yelling...when they came in asking what the hell was going on I pointed the kid out.by then the kid was past protesting.
believe they saved him..whew close one man.
also lee county iowa..was put into a very small 2 man cell once with a very large and testy indian/blackfoot maybe..steve allen/Hawk.. was his name. and NO one would cell up with him.scared..they asked mee to go I accepted..we became cellys..
woke up 1 night to him sqeezing my wrist...holding his chest..and gasping for breath...I got up fast and began beating on cell door..trouble was we were in the back part farthest from the cos hearing and it being so late..one co..1 dispatcther in a enclosed section and all sheriffs were up front with cement and steal all the way...muffling my desperate bangings..sometime between me beating on the door and screaming hawk died..or stopped breathing so I began mouth to mouth..i went from the door to hawk giving him mouth to mouth and cpr...back to the door...back to hawk..was a very long moment in time man....
the cos show up..the nurse... hes took out..rushed to the hospital..heartattack...and he lived.

Insane footage of an airplane making an incredible emergency landing on a busy road has emerged from the world of the internet. Reports indicate that nobody was injured...

In the video, the Piper Cherokee plane, which held an Orange Coast College student and flight instructor, comes seemingly (and, well, literally) out of the clear blue sky as it enters screen left and can be heard screeching to a halt as it exits screen right.

The plane had to make an emergency landing on Red Hill Avenue, just down the road from Santa Ana's John Wayne Airport where the aircraft departed, after the its engine shut off during a touch-and-go exercise, according to the Coast Reporter Online, the college's student newspaper.

The instructor took control of the aircraft from the student and landed it safely on the road, to the apparent dismay of passing motorists, including our videographer friend, known by his YouTube handle as CalicoStrike.

The Secretive Trans-Pacific Partnership: Washington’s Strategy to Isolate China14 October 2015


The secretive Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is an agreement that serves numerous purposes; one of them is to contain China’s rising economic power in the Asia-Pacific region. The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) who normally advises Washington’s insiders on foreign policy matters produced a report titled ‘Revising U.S. Grand Strategy Toward China’ written by Robert D. Blackwill and Ashley J. Tellis which clearly states that “China represents and will remain the most significant competitor to the United States for decades to come” and that “the likelihood of a long-term strategic rivalry between Beijing and Washington is high.” Blackwill and Tellis recommend that the U.S. Congress “Deliver on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, … as a geoeconomic answer to growing Chinese economic power and geopolitical coercion in Asia.” It is a clear message to China.


China was left out of the deal intentionally (not to say that China would benefit from the deal in any way), the reason is that the U.S. wants an alliance of nations than can counter China’s rise to an economic powerhouse. The TPP is meant to isolate China while the U.S. expands its presence in the Pacific (Part of the Pentagon’s ‘Full Spectrum Dominance’) turning its partners in the TPP trade deal into cheap labor colonies without rights that will serve U.S. interests.

Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum




The Weston State Hospital also known as the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. Opened in 1864. This Kirkbride psychiatric hospital is the largest hand cut stone masonry building in North America, second largest in the world. This building was part of the Kirkbride Plan which was designed by Thomas Kirkbride. The Kirkbride Plan was designed for Moral Treatment with long wings staggered from each other to provide plenty of sunlight and fresh air. All kirkbride architecture represented a Victorian style era with large tall entrances. In the 1900s, the krikbride plan of moral treatment became less used and it buildings were becoming expensive to maintain. A lot of them were left abandoned, most torn down but a lot still stand today. This Kirkbride was designed to hold 250 patients but by 1950, it had 2,600. It closed in 1994 b/c of changes in the treatment of mental illnesses and the building was falling apart.

During the 19th century, the humans who were said to have mental illnesses would end up in these asylums. They were brought in by confinement cribs and had many treatments practice on them which were said to help release there poison. These treatments were known as shock therapy (patients were given insulin in a large dose that would put them in a coma for an hour. This treatment would be repeated many time sometime killing the individual since no guidelines were set on how much of a dose could be given), hydrotherapy (patients were placed in a tub suspended on a hammock and a sheet was cut out for their head to immobilize them and to prevent them from drowning), Bloodletting (It was said that the mentally insane has poisonousness blood and by removing it, they would be a normal human again. This was done by either leaches or incision to try and drain the blood. This would often leave patients exhausted and anemic. Sometimes transfusions were also attempted with some being animal blood.), and the most controversial method known as Lobotomy (This was performed on over 25,000 in the united states in by the mid 50s by severing the connections in the frontal love of the brain thus rending them docile). During the years of its abandonment, copper thieves went through and removed a lot of the wiring in the building. There was also a case were off duty police officers used the building for paint ball games which they were all caught and believed to be released from their duty.

A preservation group bought the property for around 1.5 million dollars and today it uses public tours to try and make revenue to keep it history alive. Check out the website for find out more and get yourself in to tour this great place.

Lomax Kentucky Recordings Go Online

As part of AFC’s year-long celebration of Alan Lomax (1915-2002) during his centennial year, the American Folklife Center is thrilled to announce that The Lomax Kentucky Recordings, a complete presentation of the audio recordings Lomax made of traditional folk music in Kentucky between 1933 and 1942, has been placed online at this link. The recordings, which total over 70 hours, were made by Alan Lomax with his father John, his wife Elizabeth, and other collectors on several field trips throughout this period, primarily in Eastern Kentucky.

Featuring full, free streaming audio of every performance, interview, and narrative segment — some 1300 discrete pieces — along with searchable recording details (performer name, location, date, instrument, etc.), The Lomax Kentucky Recordings presents a breathtakingly diverse spectrum of Appalachian traditional culture and a point of entry into the lives of the farmers, laborers, coal miners, preachers, housewives, public officials, soldiers, children, grandparents, and itinerant musicians who nurtured and were nurtured by it.


There are ballads and lyric songs, play-party ditties and comic pieces, topical and protest material, fiddle and banjo tunes, hymns and sacred songs, children’s games and lullabies, and a variety of spoken lore — religious testimonies, occupational reminiscences, tall tales, jokes, and personal narratives.

Particularly notable is a version of “The House of the Rising Sun” sung by 16-year-old Georgia Turner of Middlesboro, Kentucky, which became the basis for versions by Bob Dylan, Dave Van Ronk, and Eric Burdon and the Animals. W.H. Stepp’s unusual rendition of “Bonaparte’s Retreat,” adapted by Aaron Copland for his ballet Rodeo and later reconfigured and broadcast to the nation in the “Beef, It’s What’s For Dinner” ad campaign, as I detailed in this earlier post.

The presentation has been created in collaboration with Berea College Special Collections & Archives, the University of Kentucky Libraries Special Collections Research Center, and the Association for Cultural Equity.

Alan Lomax felt that a chief result of his and his father’s efforts for the Library of Congress was that “for the first time America could hear itself.” Thus their intentions were not merely archival. Alan in fact cautioned against the strictly preservationist impulse, remarking that “folksongs should not be buried in libraries as they are in Washington and in universities over the country.” This online effort, launched in 2015 — the centennial of Alan’s birth — seeks to realize his vision by providing free and complete access to these historic collections.

The Lomax Kentucky Recordings are only a small fraction of the Lomax materials you can find online. You can also access Alan Lomax’s 1938 Michigan and Wisconsin recordings, John and Alan’s 1934 Louisiana recordings, John and Ruby Lomax’s 1939 recordings, Lomax’s recordings of “Man on the Street Interviews” and of canal boat captain Pearl Nye, and the first installment of the massive Lomax manuscript collection. The vast body of materials Lomax recorded after leaving the Library of Congress is online at the Association for Cultural Equity.

About the Project

These are documentary sound recordings of rural Kentucky music and lore collected under the auspices of the Archive of American Folk Song at the Library of Congress between 1933 and 1942. Performed by farmers, laborers, coal miners, preachers, housewives, public officials, soldiers, grandparents, adolescents, and itinerant musicians, they present a full spectrum of traditional expressive culture from twelve of Eastern Kentucky’s mountain counties: ballads and lyric songs, play-party ditties and comic pieces, topical and protest material, fiddle and banjo tunes, hymns and sacred songs, children's games and lullabies, and a variety of spoken lore—religious testimonies, occupational reminiscences, tall tales, jokes, and family and personal narratives.

The earliest recordings were made in Harlan County by John A. Lomax and his son Alan in 1933; John returned alone, in 1937, to make recordings of American Folk Song Festival performers at the Boyd County home of Festival organizer Jean Thomas. The largest collection was the result of a two-and-a-half-month trip through ten counties made in the autumn of 1937 by Alan and his wife Elizabeth Lyttleton Harold. Several months later, in early 1938, the couple made recordings of enlisted men in the Tenth Infantry Division at Fort Thomas in Northern Kentucky, and of Whitley County native Pete Steele and his family, who were living and working in Hamilton, Ohio. Columbia University professor Mary Elizabeth Barnicle—with whom Alan Lomax had collaborated on field-trips in Florida, Georgia, and the Bahamas in 1935—made an extensive canvas of Bell County in 1938. Also included here are recordings made in New York City (by Alan Lomax and Mary Barnicle) and Connecticut (by John A. Lomax) of Bell and Harlan County union activists Jim Garland, Sarah Ogan Gunning, and Aunt Molly Jackson, who had recently relocated north.

Georgia Tech Associate Professor David Hu explains how collections of ants can change their shapes and actions based on their environments. Hu and School of Physics Associate Professor Alberto Fernandez-Nieves co-authored a study that found that ants are able to do this because the insects are actually liquid-like and solid-like simultaneously.

Sabrina De Sousa is one of nearly two-dozen CIA officers who was prosecuted, convicted, and sentenced by Italian courts in absentia in 2009 for the role she allegedly played in the rendition of a radical cleric named Abu Omar. It was the first and only criminal prosecution that has ever taken place related to the CIA's rendition program, which involved more than 100 suspected terrorists and the assistance of dozens of European countries.

But De Sousa, a dual US and Portuguese citizen, said she had nothing to do with the cleric's abduction and has been wrongly accused. For the past decade, she has been on a global quest to clear her name. VICE News met up with De Sousa in Lisbon, Portugal--and other key figures connected to the case--for an exclusive interview about the steps she's now taking in an effort to hold the CIA accountable for one of the most notorious counterterrorism operations in the history of the agency.

An exclusive journey of four years inside the triple tragedy which hit Japan on March 11, 2011, following Italian Sky News reporter Pio d'Emilia who has lived in Japan for more than thirty years.
