Who led Mountain to fame on the original Woodstock stage, is back with a new album, Soundcheck, out on November 20. Despite health setbacks in recent years, West’s girthy guitar tone and roaring, soul-fired voice are intact. That’s obvious on this scalding take on Don Nix’s song “Going Down,” which was popularized by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Freddie King, one of West’s many blues heroes. The tune was also recorded by Jeff Beck on 1972’s Jeff Beck Group album, and was a springboard for some serious jamming between Beck and Stevie Ray Vaughan on their 1989 double-bill concert tour.

And speaking of Beck’s version, ex-Jeff Beck Group keyboardist Max Middleton reprises his role on West’s howling new take on the song, and is joined by two other distinguished guests, Queen’s guitarist Brian May—who dives in on the second solo and plays through the cut’s end—and singer Bonnie Bramlett of Delaney & Bonnie fame, who harmonizes with West.

“I’ve been playing this song onstage for a long time, slow and quiet,” West explains, “and then I build up the volume and use the volume knob to create violin-like swells. I love the way my bass player Rev [Jones] plays it with me, so I wanted to get it on the album. Incredible words. Also, Jeff Beck had done such a great version of the song, so I took the opportunity to play some different melodies over the chord progression.”

West revisits Beck’s soul-blues catalog a second time on Soundcheck, recording a version of Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready,” which Beck recorded with guest vocalist Rod Stewart in 1985. West superbly handles both roles for his new rendition. Other guests on Soundcheck include Peter Frampton and the late Jack Bruce. The latter is featured in a live recording of the Willie Dixon/Cream classic “Spoonful” that he and West performed in 1988, when Bruce appeared on West’s Theme solo album.

Soundcheck is West’s 16th solo album, in addition to his catalog with Mountain—which includes such influential tracks as “Mississippi Queen,” “Nantucket Sleighride,” and “Theme For an Imaginary Western”—and West, Bruce and Laing.

The Mothman

Mothman is a creature that was reported in Point Pleasant, West Virginia from November 15, 1966, to December 15, 1967. It was described as a humanoid moth like creature with huge wings and bright red eyes and has long been linked to the collapse of the Silver Bridge in 1967 and is also responsible for terrifying the locals of the area for months. It's a 1941 cartoon by Dr. Seuss that is in reaction to the fact that most Americans opposed Adolph Hitler’s anti-Jew policies while at the same time being opposed to granting safe haven to refugee Jews. The staggering death toll follows the breakdown of a truce between powerful, rival gangs and the government. Addicted to Distraction

ONE evening early this summer, I opened a book and found myself reading the same paragraph over and over, a half dozen times before concluding that it was hopeless to continue. I simply couldn’t marshal the necessary focus.

I was horrified. All my life, reading books has been a deep and consistent source of pleasure, learning and solace. Now the books I regularly purchased were piling up ever higher on my bedside table, staring at me in silent rebuke.

Instead of reading them, I was spending too many hours online, checking the traffic numbers for my company’s website, shopping for more colorful socks on Gilt and Rue La La, even though I had more than I needed, and even guiltily clicking through pictures with irresistible headlines such as “Awkward Child Stars Who Grew Up to Be Attractive.”

During the workday, I checked my email more times than I cared to acknowledge, and spent far too much time hungrily searching for tidbits of new information about the presidential campaign, with the election then still more than a year away.

“The net is designed to be an interruption system, a machine geared to dividing attention,” Nicholas Carr explains in his book “The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains.” “We willingly accept the loss of concentration and focus, the division of our attention and the fragmentation of our thoughts, in return for the wealth of compelling or at least diverting information we receive.”

Addiction is the relentless pull to a substance or an activity that becomes so compulsive it ultimately interferes with everyday life. By that definition, nearly everyone I know is addicted in some measure to the Internet. It has arguably replaced work itself as our most socially sanctioned addiction.

According to one recent survey (http://blogs.adobe.com/conversations/2015/08/email.html), the average white-collar worker spends about six hours a day on email. That doesn’t count time online spent shopping, searching or keeping up with social media.

The brain’s craving for novelty, constant stimulation and immediate gratification creates something called a “compulsion loop.” Like lab rats and drug addicts, we need more and more to get the same effect.

Endless access to new information also easily overloads our working memory. When we reach cognitive overload, our ability to transfer learning to long-term memory significantly deteriorates. It’s as if our brain has become a full cup of water and anything more poured into it starts to spill out.

I’ve known all of this for a long time. I started writing about it 20 years ago. I teach it to clients every day. I just never really believed it could become so true of me.

Denial is any addict’s first defense. No obstacle to recovery is greater than the infinite capacity to rationalize our compulsive behaviors. After years of feeling I was managing myself reasonably well, I fell last winter into an intense period of travel while also trying to manage a growing consulting business. In early summer, it suddenly dawned on me that I wasn’t managing myself well at all, and I didn’t feel good about it.

Beyond spending too much time on the Internet and a diminishing attention span, I wasn’t eating the right foods. I drank way too much diet soda. I was having a second cocktail at night too frequently. I was no longer exercising every day, as I had nearly all my life.

In response, I created an irrationally ambitious plan. For the next 30 days, I would attempt to right these behaviors, and several others, all at once. It was a fit of grandiosity. I recommend precisely the opposite approach every day to clients. But I rationalized that no one is more committed to self-improvement than I am. These behaviors are all related. I can do it.

The problem is that we humans have a very limited reservoir of will and discipline. We’re far more likely to succeed by trying to change one behavior at a time, ideally at the same time each day, so that it becomes a habit, requiring less and less energy to sustain.

I did have some success over those 30 days. Despite great temptation, I stopped drinking diet soda and alcohol altogether. (Three months later I’m still off diet soda.) I also gave up sugar and carbohydrates like chips and pasta. I went back to exercising regularly.

I failed completely in just one behavior: cutting back my time on the Internet.

My initial commitment was to limit my online life to checking email just three times a day: When I woke up, at lunchtime and before I went home at the end of the day. On the first day, I succeeded until midmorning, and then completely broke down. I was like a sugar addict trying to resist a cupcake while working in a bakery.

What broke my resolve that first morning was the feeling that I absolutely had to send someone an email about an urgent issue. If I just wrote it and pushed “Send,” I told myself, then I wasn’t really going online.

What I failed to take into account was that new emails would download into my inbox while I wrote my own. None of them required an immediate reply, and yet I found it impossible to resist peeking at the first new message that carried an enticing subject line. And the second. And the third.

In a matter of moments, I was back in a self-reinforcing cycle. By the next day, I had given up trying to cut back my digital life. I turned instead to the simpler task of resisting diet soda, alcohol and sugar.

Even so, I was determined to revisit my Internet challenge. Several weeks after my 30-day experiment ended, I left town for a monthlong vacation. Here was an opportunity to focus my limited willpower on a single goal: liberating myself from the Internet in an attempt to regain control of my attention.

I had already taken the first step in my recovery: admitting my powerlessness to disconnect. Now it was time to detox. I interpreted the traditional second step — belief that a higher power could help restore my sanity — in a more secular way. The higher power became my 30-year-old daughter, who disconnected my phone and laptop from both my email and the Web. Unburdened by much technological knowledge, I had no idea how to reconnect either one.

I did leave myself reachable by text. In retrospect, I was holding on to a digital life raft. Only a handful of people in my life communicate with me by text. Because I was on vacation, they were largely members of my family, and the texts were mostly about where to meet up at various points during the day.

During those first few days, I did suffer withdrawal pangs, most of all the hunger to call up Google and search for an answer to some question that arose. But with each passing day offline, I felt more relaxed, less anxious, more able to focus and less hungry for the next shot of instant but short-lived stimulation. What happened to my brain is exactly what I hoped would happen: It began to quiet down."

Watch Essential 21-Minute 'X-Files' Miniseries Preview

"With less than a month to go before The X-Files returns from its "13-year commercial break" for a six-episode event series, the long-running sci-fi series has provided a 21-minute video as a preview for the miniseries. The extended clip doubles as a refresher for old fans and introduction to uninitiated viewers who didn't grow up with David Duchovny's Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson's Dana Scully. For viewers who don't have time to marathon-watch The X-Files' nine seasons on Netflix, the "Re-Opened" featurette is mandatory viewing.

Like the original X-Files, the miniseries' arc will feature a combo of "Mythology" episodes – Mulder and Scully's series-long search for proof of extraterrestrial life – and standalone "Monster of the Week" episodes, where the agents are roped into a bizarre investigation outside their UFO pursuits. This time around, the two types of episodes will bleed into one another (as opposed to the original series, which kept the storylines and its consequences separate). "Even in the standalone episode, there's some story to advance," Duchovny says. "It's not just about the case."

At the heart of the six-episode miniseries is the continuing story of Mulder and Scully. "We've always tried to have a human element. It was always tied to how it affected Mulder and Scully as human beings, and same here," writer Darin Morgan, who penned some of The X-Files most beloved and offbeat episodes, says in the preview. "They're going through all these weird stories but the throughlines is them confronting their age and confronting their life choices."

The X-Files' miniseries premieres January 24th. In addition to bringing back the majority of the main cast – even supposedly deceased characters like the Smoking Man – creator Chris Carter and the series' main stable of writers returned for the new episodes."

'Unlike Anything I've Ever Seen': Mike Rowe Describes
His Wild Night With Rat-Hunting Dogs In NYC


On a freezing night in late December, a group a of dog-lovers gathered on a quiet corner by a park in lower Manhattan.

Their purpose? To deploy their household pets as soldiers in the never-ending war against New York City’s legendary population of rats.

Mike Rowe, host of CNN’s “Somebody’s Got To Do It,” spent an evening with the group, which calls itself R.A.T.S. (Ryder’s Alley Trencher-fed Society), last year.

Speaking with TheBlaze (http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2016/01/07/unlike-anything-ive-ever-seen-mike-rowe-describes-his-wild-night-with-a-pack-of-rat-hunting-dogs-in-new-york-city/), Rowe described the nocturnal outing as something “unlike anything I’ve ever seen.”

“Mild manner little terriers, these loyal pets are transformed into the hound of the Baskervilles,” said Rowe. “Together they go into the city and they start killing rats.”

“[W]hile the city is doing all sorts of interesting things in the category of vermin abatement, the frontline battle is going on after dark with terriers completely waging a holy war on the unseen scourge of New York City,” continued Rowe.

Matt Combs, a graduate student and research assistant who studies the city’s rodent population at Fordham University often attends the hunts where he collects DNA samples to help track the rodents’ migrations.

Combs said that the real problem occurs when the city’s millions of rats lose fear for the more than 8 million human inhabitants.

“There’s some flip switches where they are just not afraid anymore,” said Combs. “[T]hat’s what you don’t want.”

Richard Reynolds, a main organizer for the group, said that while the numbers their dogs are able to destroy are relatively low, it actually cast a much longer shadow on future populations due to their high fertility rates.

“The two rats we took tonight is the same of take 24,000 next year,” said Reynolds.

Yet despite the progress R.A.T.S and city officials have made, the rodents remains one of the most common sights for New Yorker City residents and visitors.

“All we know is its almost impossible for a New Yorker be anywhere at any time and not be within five-feet of a rat,” said Rowe.

IMSI catchers are portable surveillance tools used for spying on thousands of phones in a targeted area, tracking their location and even intercepting calls, messages, and data. They are supposed to help identify serious criminals, but cannot operate without monitoring innocent people too.

UK police have IMSI catchers, but they refuse to tell the public how and when they are used. This has privacy campaigners worried. And, even if the state is using them sparingly, what if criminals also have access to the technology?

VICE News searches London for IMSI catchers, then goes shopping at a state security fair, and finally finds a shady technology company who'll sell us the spy gear.

Don Felder on Glenn Frey: "He Was the Eagles' James Dean"

Don Felder today released a statement regarding the death of his longtime Eagles bandmate Glenn Frey.

Frey died yesterday, January 18, in New York City, from complications of rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia. The guitarist had been battling intestinal problems for months.

Felder co-wrote “Hotel California,” one of the Eagles’ biggest hits, with Frey and Eagles drummer Don Henley. (You can watch him talk about the song’s creation here.)

In his statement, Felder writes:

“Glenn’s passing was so unexpected and has left me with a very heavy heart filled with sorrow. He was so young and still full of amazing genius. He was an extremely talented songwriter, arranger, leader, singer, guitarist, you name it and Glenn could do it and create ‘MAGIC’ on the spot. His visions and insights into songs and lyrics have become legendary and will echo throughout time on this earth for decades to come.

“Glenn was the one who invited me to join the Eagles in 1974 and it turned out to be a gift of a lifetime to have spent so many years working side by side with him. He was funny, strong, and generous. At times it felt like we were brothers and at other times, like brothers, we disagreed. Despite our struggles and difficult moments together we managed to create some magical songs, recordings and live show. His charisma on stage was felt and loved by millions of people all over the world.

“I have many wonderful memories of those years and the many miles I travelled with Glenn, filled with laughter, song, parties, hugs and brotherly bonds. Glenn was the James Dean of the band. He was the leader that we all looked to for direction and by far the coolest guy in the band. It saddens me a great deal that we were never able to address the issues that came between us and talk them through. Sadly now we will never get the chance.

“The planet has lost a great man and a wonderful musician today. None will ever be able to take his place.

“May you rest in peace Glenn Frey and may God bless you and your lovely family.”

Antarctic Explorer Henry Worsley Dies in Record-Breaking Journey


British explorer Henry Worsley has died trying to be the first person to cross the Antarctic alone. The former British Army officer developed a serious bacterial infection during his solo expedition and died Sunday of “complete organ failure” after being rescued just 30 miles short of his goal and airlifted to a hospital in Punta Arenas, Chile. Biography:

Christopher Knight has worked in advertising and marketing for over thirty years. Until recently he was the Chairman of an English advertising agency called 'Paradigm,' which was named the country's advertising agency of the year in the year 2000. He now divides his time between marketing consultancy and historical research.

Christopher has written four books to date, several co-authored with Robert Lomas. He has invested seven years conducting research into the origins of Freemasonic rituals. His interest in Freemasonry began in 1976 when he joined a local lodge simply to find out what these men did behind their closed doors. Over the next couple of years he realized that nobody understood what the rituals were about or where they had come from. Over a quarter of a century later he has tracked the origins of these rituals down to prehistoric stonemasons in the British Isles.

THE PERSECUTION, THE PATRIACH, AND LAST AND LEAST, THE POPE

"This story was the subject of much discussion in last Friday's members' vidchat, and then, after the end of that event, many people sent me this version of the story from Russia's Sputnik site, and there's much food for thought here.

But first, I'd like to put all my cards on the table, and explain the title of today's blog, and why I am emphasizing the Papacy last, and least in the headline, and it is not simply because of my long association in the past with Eastern Orthodoxy, but that is part of it. It has always bothered me - perhaps intensely - that the modern secular West seems almost viscerally afraid of Eastern Orthodox cultures, and especially, of Russia. One person sent me a version of this story from a website, and the title of the article said it all: "Humble Pope To Meet Scandallous Patriarch," meaning of course, Patriarch Kryil of Moscow. The scandal here concerns criticism of Kyril's rather lavish lifestyle that has occurred in Russia. Whether true or not, it was an attitude that I've seen before, as long ago as my professorial days teaching medieval history, when one of my textbooks had a chapter (only one chapter!) devoted to covering the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic Middle Ages, in a chapter somewhat rudely and dismissively titled "Europe's Neighbors." The meaning was clear: "Europe" meant the societies that emerged from the Christian West, i.e., the from the Latin Church and Papacy; the East remained an inscrutable reliquary, not worth studying in depth and comparing to the West, and this was particularly the case in the study of the major differences in theological formulation - and yes, the differences between the two churches are major, and not minor - that lead to major differences in church government, piety, and ultimately the cultures that emerged in each case.

But there's another operative factor here, and that is what happened at the Second Vatican Council held in the 1960s under the pontificates of John XXIII (Angelo Cardinal Roncalli) and his successor Paul VI(Giovanni Cardinal Montini). Without getting into the gory details of the Second Vatican Council, for all intentions and purposes virtually every classical formulation of Roman Catholic teaching was abandoned for a stew of platitudinous pronouncements, especially on relationships to other religious bodies, including Islam. The only "traditional" language that remained was the language concerning definitions of papal claims, power, and prerogative, and these would would have pleased a Pius IX (Giovanni-Maria Cardinal Mastai-Ferreti), who succeeded in having the papacy proclaimed infallible at the First Vatican Council in 1870-71. (And, for the record, there was significant opposition at this council and after it to the definition, though the opposition ultimately failed. But that's another story.)

Under this new "ecumenical" outlook, a whole host of "dialogues" with the Islamic world was initiated; dialogues that have, to this day, not succeeded in seeing any Christian churches opened in Saudi Arabia, and which have produced no ameliorations of the second-hand status of non-Mulsims in many Islamic societies, and which, to the contrary, have presided over a period of increasing persecution of Christians - be they Roman Catholic, Orthodox Catholic, Coptic, Nestorian, or Armenian - in the Islamic world. To put it bluntly, but plainly, it has been a stellar, and stunning, record of failure. But after all, it is difficult to negotiate with an unreconstructed ideology of warfare against ... well, against just about everybody that isn't Islamic.As the former Muslim and scholar Ibn Warraq put it, the Islamic world needs not just a Reformation, but an Enlightenment. To the Vatican's credit, however, Pope John Paul II did warn that American unipolarism and intervention in Iraq would spiral out of control, and lead to increasing persecution of Christians. His foresight has proven to be the case.

Which is why I find recent pronouncements from the Vatican so very interesting from this ecumenico-historical point of view, for Vatican spokesmen, including Pope Francis I himself, have made it clear, that Christians have the right of self-defence under the conditions that the old compact of their tolerance under otherwise reprehensible regimes of Saddam Hussein or, yes, a Bashar Al-Assad or Hosni Mubarek, has been broken.

In that rather broad context, then, consider this article on the meeting to take place between Russian Orthodox Catholic Patriach of Moscow, Kyril, and Roman Catholic Pope Francis, in, of all places, Havanna Cuba:

What I found intriguing about Sputnik's take here is that the purpose of the meeting clearly is to discuss the persecution of Christians, which has reached epic proportions in the Middle East and Africa, with little being said by Western leaders. The choice of Havana itself is interesting, since Cuba is, of course, a largely Roman Catholic country, with a long history of association with Russia during the Cold War, making it difficult to ascertain if this meeting and its venue was largely a Vatican initiative, or that of the Patriarchate of Moscow. My intuition says that this was perhaps a bit of both, and that it has been in long quiet preparation.

In any case, it's tremendous grist for the mill of our high octane speculation, for what does it really portend? I suspect, and suspect strongly, that it portends a huge geopolitcal shift is in the offing, and that religion, or if you will, "Christian civilization" is the cover behind which it is being engineered. It is this factor that makes me suspect that Russia and the Moscow Patriarchate played more than a merely passive or respondent role to Vatican initiatives, for if this analysis be true, then we can expect any statement or statements to come from this meeting to do two things: (1) to emphasize the need for honest dialogue with the Islamic world, and not just a perpetual capitulation of the Christian to the Islamic worlds. In other words, expect the usual platidudinous ecumenical flannel, but lurking behind it, a subtle but nonetheless discernible change in tone behind the warm fuzzies and group hugs. (2) But I also suspect, if not in any initial statements, then in future "clarifications" both from Moscow and Rome, that it will be made clear that this right of Christians in the region to self-defense in the face of brutal, medieval, and barbaric persecution, that this right extends and is to be understood to include economic security, equal status before the law, and ultimately, the right to use force or to request military assistance - perhaps in the guise of "international peacekeeprs" - to secure those conditions. One can also look forward to some subtle, but firm, opposition both from the Russian government, the Moscow Patriarchate, and the Vatican, to you-know-who's not-so-subtle attempts to introduce "anti-blasphemy provisions" against its religion at the U.N., an effort that undermines the most fundamental condition of any free society: free speech.

This sweeping geopolitical and cultural change - if this "high octane reading" be true - also signals something else, and it is equally as significant as the meeting itself. When Jorge Cardinal Bergolio was elected and took the name Francis for his pontificate, I suggested that perhaps this was a signal that the Vatican powers-that-be in the Curia were recognizing, at long last, that the center of Roman Catholicism had shifted from its historical home in Europe and the First World, to the second and third worlds, and that it was thus to be considered a "bridge" papacy to a realignment, more openly, with those worlds. While the Vatican will continue to be intertwined, financially, with the West for some time to come, make no mistake, meeting with the Patriarch of Moscow may also signal that shift of orientation.

If any of these predictions and speculations are true, then we can expect them to be borne out, slowly.

Time, of course, will tell if all these high octane speculations and predictions are true or not. But whether they are or are not, the meeting itself, and its venue in Cuba - a country with its own track record of religious persecutions - is significant enough. To put it country simple, I suspect that the venue's choice was deliberately chosen by both churches to emphasize that they mean business."
