A new wiretap bill backed by the FBI has many Internet companies concerned that this new proposed legislation will open the floodgates to all Internet communication. The new motion will expand wiretapping designs significantly and includes the ability for law enforcement to gain access to emails and features like video chats.

One thing I don't understand about Startpage. For example, you go there and type in Project Avalon. Results come up. But then you must select "view by proxy" or do you? If you don't, are you still viewing privately? Because if you do view by proxy, you can't log in and links don't work except by taking you out of viewing by proxy.
So how does it really work?

Yes you do
Open a wifi account under a pseudonym
pre pay in cash for top ups
only use that terminal for web surfing and this sort of stuff.
use your standard terminal for normal every day boring stuff
no matter what double blind tech is out there if you are anon while surfing your are better off.
NB
do not use google location or navigative services with this terminal
keep your wifi unit as far as you can from your terminal 15 meters is good.
In order for them to identify you , they need you to be within 1.5 meters of the wifi unit .
re lovcate the unit every month
use a po box for all mail
DO NOT use this for making problems for others , use it to surf anon.
You have the right to surf and be interested in whatever you wish. You do not have the right to limit others right to freedom.
You can start a fake FB page and link it to your fake email addy on this terminal to make it seem legit.
If you have an I phone or similar and your terminal has inbuilt wifi do not them them speak to each other , they will id you as the phone is usually registered.
Most equipment has rfid reading capabilities and will report anything to a central data base. same with your X Box .. same with your CC ... the terminal must be sepperate and only used for this function.
buy an only PC or Lappy from the markets thats been wiped .. establish your fake id on this terminal. then keep it tat way. never use that terminal for things that can be triangulated back to you by association.
Be safe ,be happy , be nice and be

Something else I heard Kathryn Albrecht say in an Alex Jones interview....you'll get a wider array of websites when you use www.ixquick.com as opposed to startpage.com - because google filters the information and since you're using a google search engine, you won't get all available info, where ixquick doesn't filter. Maybe sensor could be another word??? Hope I'm explaining it right.

Hi CdnSirian,
See graphic below. I've added the pop-up message for "view by proxy". If an "s" is in the address, it is a secure site. You'll find that if, for example, you do on-line banking. I've added something about IP Addresses and a Q&A help link.
Startpage Help Center (https://startpage.com/eng/protect-privacy.html) with index on such things as Q&A and Privacy. This is what they say about IP Addresses:
The IP address that is associated with your search will NOT be recorded. (The only exception is for "abusive" (automated) queriers that rapidly submit many queries to Startpage in a very short time.)

I'm not sure, mariposafe. If it were me, I'd consider it worldwide. One example that comes to mind, if someone from England sends me an email, their information will be in my file because I live in America.
Google/Facebook collects data on all their members. If it's not worldwide, I'd assume it'll happen soon enough because it's about controlling the world. Google is meeting around the Bilderberg meetings. My 'guess' is that they'll have that on their agenda.

Jim
Hi Jim, I think I’ve understood your question to say you want to refer someone to a post you made earlier, so you need to create a link for them. If not let me know. See instructions and visual pics below.
How to create a link from a post. Let’s use your post #7 in this example, and the goal is to create a link from a newly created post back to post #7. Either here or on another thread, it’s the same. For now, let’s stay on this thread:
Click on “Link to Post #7” on the top, right side of the post.
That post lands at the top of the forum page.
At the top of the browser, in the “address section” is the address to “copy and paste”.
Back at the new post, we’ll use the following example: To check out post #7, please “click here”.
Next step is highlight “click here”. Then up go to the menu and click on the globe that says “insert link” when you run your mouse over it.
Up pops a menu that states: “Please enter the URL of your link” this is where you paste the address from post #7 where you originally copied.
This is the address: http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?59759-For-Yahoo-and-Gmail-Users&p=683274&viewfull=1#post683274
This is the finished link address example: To check out post #7, please “click here (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?59759-For-Yahoo-and-Gmail-Users&p=683274&viewfull=1#post683274)”.

You can "bookmark" posts of interest by click on the bookmark (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/dbtech/bookmark/images/post.png) icon below any post.
Then you can go back later and look at the posts you bookmarked using these instructions: How to access your bookmarked threads and posts (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?15287-How-to-access-your-bookmarked-threads-and-posts).

All internet and phone traffic is routed through "fusion" centers and is recorded & filtered for key words at a minimum... so this whole thread is sort of.......... pointless?
BUT using facebook or Gmail does make it "easier" for more agencies to access your data; but really I don't even worry about it just be aware that everything you post has been sifted through & that there are hundreds of MILLIONS of people being filtered and YOU are NOT important enough for them to bother with, if you are you'll know (or just be paranoid enough to think you are).
I heard outlook has a good email right now. Don't know yet first hand though.

The "BUT" and added advice says not. You contradict yourself. Unless that is your point...there's some value to this thread rather than it be a "pointless thread".
I'm going to assume the latter because there's no voice for me to discern the clear intent of your post.
And at the moment, I sit in judgement about your view that this is a "pointless thread". I favor Katherine Albrecht, the privacy expert's advice over yours.

I've heard rumours that this is under discussion. We'll see how it goes!
Meanwhile, I had to "unproxy" to log in, respond and thank. So my question still is, while I got to PA through Startpage, what happens when I leave the search page and go to PA? My understanding is I may as well have gone through Google, at that point.
So this thread is certainly not pointless to me...the discussion is valuable.

Clearly I struck a cord there, I did not mean any personal offense, appologies all around! I most definately did not mean to infer in anyway that your contribution was "worthless" or un wanted or "pointless", I apreciate these discussions as they help me refine my own thoughts on the topic & possibly help others out through my "knowledge".
I was simply trying to emphisise the point that what's on the internet might as well be considered public domain, unless it's highly encrypted (which is the fastest way to get yourself on a watch list, funny enough, and with modern computing power what it is, is generaly not as safe as it used to be) & that causing yourself any stress over your email provider is effort best directed to gardening or something else that actually will have an impact on your life.

Start page is just a search engine that doesn't store your searches tied to your IP address, it, in itself is a proxy for google searches.
Might be good to define proxy here:
prox•y
[prok-see] Show IPA
noun, plural prox•ies.
1.
the agency, function, or power of a person authorized to act as the deputy or substitute for another.
2.
the person so authorized; substitute; agent.
3.
a written authorization empowering another person to vote or act for the signer, as at a meeting of stockholders.
4.
an ally or confederate who can be relied upon to speak or act in one's behalf.
So, in this case a proxy means that you tell someone to do something, they do it for you, and then give the results to you (there by separating you from the action done). for example:
I want to give a gift to a person, but do not want the person to know who gave the gift, I select a trusted person (proxy) to deliver the gift for me & the trusted person (proxy) tells me the results.
So, if you are trying to get to Project Avalon and DO NOT want Project Avalon to know who you are (via your IP) you use a Proxy (then PA would see the traffic you direct at it as coming from this proxy, instead of you).
So a proxy on the internet is simply a way of shielding yourself (a little) from the end destination by not allowing it to know exactly where you came from.
NOW, my point was that this is all sort of an exercise in futility (especially in the US, though I'm sure similar things go on elsewhere) since all traffic is recorded & searched for keywords already by the NSA & a few other agencies.
I'll not question Katherine Albrecht's credentials, but I'm not a novice in this area and hold several certifications that other people care far too much about along with a decade and a half of hands on experience; though that is sort of a logical fallacy "appeal to authority" so do your own research & come to your own conclusions.

Thank you, TargeT. The Katherine Albrecht comment was about feeling she cares enough about the issue to pass it along. Whereas your comment felt like your best interest came first. Whatever my perception of it was. I've forgotten it all now. Seriously.....it's G-O-N-E. So thanks for the experiential, here & now effect, and your shared and valued point of view on this important privacy matter.
On another note, I logged off and then back on after recalling that I've had a couple of websites through Register.com. And I paid a little extra for them to 'lock out' others from knowing who's name and address belongs to my site(s). That's the only way I understand, Startpage. But it's hard to explain to others to set their minds at ease. In the end, I'd be vigilant on what I put in my emails. But there's the rub.... they are still controlling the messages that goes out.
Gotta go get my dog's nails cut...
PS Katherine Albrecht is one of the good guys. I look forward to whatever she shares. It's always, always about protecting the people.

If you are thinking about tweeting about clouds, pork, exercise or even Mexico, think again. Doing so may result in a closer look by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
In a story appearing earlier today on the U.K’s Daily Mail website, it was reported that the DHS has been forced to release a list of keywords and phrases it uses to monitor various social networking sites. The list provides a glimpse into what DHS describes as “signs of terrorist or other threats against the U.S.”
The list was posted by the Electronic Privacy Information Center who filed a request under the Freedom of Information Act, before suing to obtain the release of the documents. The documents were part of the department’s 2011 ’Analyst’s Desktop Binder‘ used by workers at their National Operations Center which instructs workers to identify ‘media reports that reflect adversely on DHS and response activities’.
The information sheds new light on how government analysts are instructed to patrol the internet searching for domestic and external threats. The Daily Mail’s article noted the Electronic Privacy Information Center wrote a letter to the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Counter-terrorism and Intelligence, describing it’s choice of words as ‘broad, vague and ambiguous’.
What wasn’t disclosed is how the agency actually gains access to the various search engines and social networks to monitor the specified keywords. My guess is the DHS has a “special arrangement” with companies like Google GOOG +0.14%, Facebook FB -2.5%, Microsoft MSFT -0.79%, Yahoo and Twitter to gain secure direct API access. This type of access would allow it to use distributed cloud technologies to monitor the daily flow of social media and search activity in something close to real time.
I would love to learn more about the technologies used to accomplish this type of social / web monitoring. The applications for monitoring trends and social statics are fascinating when applied to other industry sectors. Given the extent of the monitoring, I’m sure this post itself is now coming up on the DHS radar, so please feel free to leave a comment with any insights.

I feel that no matter what Browser or what email, we have, they will still see it if they want to. Not to mention, all they have to do is remove view us any time they please. Nothing is private anymore, nothing. (my opinion of course).

Since 1999, I’ve built and maintained webs for clients including several school systems. I bring that up to demonstrate my point on privacy. The teachers had one level of access while mine was at a different level. One reason was to trouble shoot. The company assigned me a level of access in some areas and I’m locked out on others.
That’s how I see where the “Startpage” company is able to protect their clients. We are locked out where we do not belong. Yes, someone could pay someone for the password to break in. Yes, many people are miles ahead of what I understand. Too, some may take on the challenge to hack in just for the brag status. But as far as choosing between “Startpage” and other known sell-outs, such as Google and Yahoo, the former makes sense.
Again, I’d pass along to friends and family to be careful of what they send through email. Who knows, maybe snail mail will be in vogue. Or could that be the plot to get everyone using that failing system once again? (insert ‘kidding’ here)
There is still a possibility to track if you use Google's YouTube. I erase my history once in a while. But I’m sure that the saved private videos can be noted. I also erase the history on the web browser, too. And now, I’m beginning to sound a bit paranoid...

So that's DHS list, I wonder what's in the NSA list ?
To answer your question, Norman, it’s the same based on this site: NSA DHS Keyword list (http://m.threepercenter.org/read.php?8,47904,48819).
Speaking of Keywords the "Analyst’s Desktop Binder (http://www.scribd.com/doc/82701103/Analyst-Desktop-Binder-REDACTED)" may be of interest to some. It gets interesting around page 19, 20, ... The link came from the site just below this section. For a quick skim, I added the bold around, "This got me thinking."

May 29, 2012
"Three months ago, a list of keywords was released by the Dept. for Homeland Security after the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) sued the government for withholding the document.
The story has stirred up again by a couple of recent media reports have gotten the social networks sharing the media reports like wildfire.
This got me thinking.
The U.S. government may not be monitoring everything you say on social media sites, it monitors hundreds of seemingly obvious keywords every minute of the day --- and some that are just plain bizarre.
The 39-page "2011 Analyst's Desktop Binder", emblazoned with the Homeland Security seal, dedicates four pages to words ranging from weather terms and cyber security to "south-west border" words and health related terms."

So who's gonna discuss something with a partner or otherwise on a business idea or invention? I mean for the last 40 to 70 years they've kept technology from us, yet they want us to continue to feed their nosey little intel businesses, when NO ONE WANTS THEM OR USES THEM. They will steal ideas and things, novels all that stuff, is NOT their business.
Well Looks like the Yahoo is only for job interviews, good thing I'm retired. LOL
I get sick of answering the "crapline/spamlisters" anyway. Mostly political beggers for the party, when they don't do anything for US/voters. I just keep an eye on them and use the twitter, for fast viral action. I wouldn't go from Explorer 7 on my Yahoo, because they hooked up with Google, and just like that, started telling me to exchange the password with Google. I didn't do it. Then they tried to give me the explorer8 with chrome. NOPE, googles for dopes, and I only use it for the googlesky. Since they block the images I was trying to see anyway, I've dumped them and erased their history site. They kept trying to buy FB to connect it all, but FB hasn't had the right price. You know they think WE are addicted to this, and are trying to own the access to every site and charge. May have to get like DutcheSince and go off the communication grid, to piss them off for trying it.
Shall we boycott the net for a month? It would really tick em off. Hee, hee. It's summer vacation coming anyway, good time to get with nature, and just tweet links to the original site of whatever video and visit the site, don't drag it back here or e-mail it.
Bill you will let us know, if they try the sneaky crap through you server, eh mate? We really can give them the runaround by forwarding it to all the facebook friends, and then you can add more and more people from around the world, and confuse the heck out of em.
Time to put it down for a while, and meditate. Let them tap that. LOL

And this new website e-mail services will be the first thing the NSA/GCHQ will monitor. Don't kid yourselves. If its electronically produced communication the above agencies monitor it legal or no legal. And I was told that by a GCHQ worker back in the Thatcher years when they was on strike for their rite to have a trade union in the workplace. He said NOTHING gets past us and at that time he also said we only have 56k modem internet communication for now because GCHQ had not yet installed the system to monitor high speed connections in the UK. He said the idea of privacy and freedom is a complete joke. EVERYTHING is monitored and shared and if your on the watch list even your mail gets diverted and opened. And I was told this back then in the Thatcher years.

Some people, out of the goodness of their hearts, provide free services for net activities. Project Avalon moderators are a good examples I presume.
But services that require many resources or require high maintenance (examples: Snopes.com (http://snopes.com/), Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/), etc.) need revenue to continue. It is common sense to think these free services, especially those without an obvious way to generate significant revenue, are selling information out the back door or are recipients of an undisclosed government/corporate payroll.
Where does revenue come from to maintain Ixquick (https://www.ixquick.com/) and Startpage (https://startpage.com/)? Anyone know? What motivates them to provide free service? Not much detail on their website.
I use both search engines. But when I ask myself if these search engines are really private, my solar plexus feels uncomfortable.
Nothing should be done using the internet, or stored on a computer connected to the net, that would cause discomfort if the information became public knowledge.

At lavabit you can have a free account with 128 Mb ... not much questions asked. It uses encrypted connections and you
can use POP3/SMTP if you don't want to use webmail. They value YOUR privacy.
They also have a free 1024 Mb account but in that one they will insert advertising.
For me the 128 Mb is more than sufficient. I use Thunderbird (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/) as email client, so during the day all incoming messages are frequently
retrieved from the server. Besides, I am using that account (with no real name attached) especially for registrations and short
private communications. Thunderbird will not be the limitation because it can handle multiple email accounts (I am using 6 accounts).
Did you know you can eliminate the webmail for hotmail too? I have a hotmail account for (mainly for tesing purposes) and I don't
need to use the webmail interface.

This can be perceived as one of those “good news, bad new” times. I reference #2, it’s been going on since 1952. So, the level of urgency to get the word out had dropped to the “low-medium zone”. I wonder if they saw me steal that “Skybar” (GMO-less or GMO-lite) when I was 6? If not, I’ve just provided evidence.

The video from your Huffingtonpost.com article had this comment by our Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid, “Everybody should just calm down... It’s a program that’s worked to prevent not all terrorism but certainly a vast majority of it.” - Well I feel much safer now.
And the vid goes on with a question about does the NSA collect this data?
Response paraphrased: James Clapper, Director of National Intelligence, “No, sir, it does not....” “Feds may ‘inadvertently’ get data.” - Geez, even a 10 year old can see through this word play, because that’s what 10 year olds do.
