Today, millions of Americans say that they believe that the United States is on the verge of a major economic collapse and will soon be entering another Great Depression. But only a small percentage of those same people are prepared for that to happen. The sad truth is that the vast majority of Americans would last little more than a month on what they have stored up in their homes.
Most of us are so used to running out to the supermarket or to Wal-Mart for whatever we need that we never even stop to consider what would happen if suddenly we were not able to do that. Already the U.S. economy is starting to stumble about like a drunken frat boy.
All it would take for the entire U.S. to resemble New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina would be for a major war, a terror attack, a deadly pandemic or a massive natural disaster to strike at just the right time and push the teetering U.S. economy over the edge. So just how would you survive if you suddenly could not rely on the huge international corporate giants to feed, clothe and supply you and your family? Do you have a plan?
Unless you already live in a cave or you are a complete and total mindless follower of the establishment media, you should be able to see very clearly that our society is more vulnerable now than it ever has been.
This year there have been an unprecedented number of large earthquakes around the world and volcanoes all over the globe are awakening. You can just take a look at what has happened in Haiti and in Iceland to see how devastating a natural disaster can be.
Not only that, but we have a world that is full of lunatics in positions of power, and if one of them decides to set off a nuclear, chemical or biological weapon in a major city it could paralyze an entire region.
War could erupt in the Middle East at literally any moment, and if it does the price of oil will double or triple (at least) and there is the possibility that much of the entire world could be drawn into the conflict.
Scientists tell us that a massive high-altitude EMP (electromagnetic pulse) blast could send large portions of the United States back to the stone age in an instant. In addition, there is the constant threat that the outbreak of a major viral pandemic (such as what happened with the 1918 Spanish Flu) could kill tens of millions of people around the globe and paralyze the economies of the world.
But even without all of that, the truth is that the U.S. economy is going to collapse. So just think of what will happen if one (or more) of those things does happen on top of all the economic problems that we are having.
Are you prepared?
The following is a list of 20 things you and your family will need to survive when the economy totally collapses and the next Great Depression begins....
#1) Storable Food
Food is going to instantly become one of the most valuable commodities in existence in the event of an economic collapse. If you do not have food you are not going to survive. Most American families could not last much longer than a month on what they have in their house right now. So what about you? If disaster struck right now, how long could you survive on what you have? The truth is that we all need to start storing up food. If you and your family run out of food, you will suddenly find yourselves competing with the hordes of hungry people who are looting the stores and roaming the streets looking for something to eat.
Of course you can grow your own food, but that is going to take time. So you need to have enough food stored up until the food that you plant has time to grow. But if you have not stored up any seeds you might as well forget it. When the economy totally collapses, the remaining seeds will disappear very quickly. So if you think that you are going to need seeds, now is the time to get them.
#2) Clean Water
Most people can survive for a number of weeks without food, but without water you will die in just a few days. So where would you get water if the water suddenly stopped flowing out of your taps? Do you have a plan? Is there an abundant supply of clean water near your home? Would you be able to boil water if you need to?
Besides storing water and figuring out how you are going to gather water if society breaks down, another thing to consider is water purification tablets. The water you are able to gather during a time of crisis may not be suitable for drinking. So you may find that water purification tablets come in very, very handy.
#3) Shelter
You can't sleep on the streets, can you? Well, some people will be able to get by living on the streets, but the vast majority of us will need some form of shelter to survive for long. So what would you do if you and your family lost your home or suddenly were forced from your home? Where would you go?
The best thing to do is to come up with several plans. Do you have relatives that you can bunk with in case of emergency? Do you own a tent and sleeping bags if you had to rough it? If one day everything hits the fan and you and your family have to "bug out" somewhere, where would that be? You need to have a plan.
#4) Warm Clothing
If you plan to survive for long in a nightmare economic situation, you are probably going to need some warm, functional clothing. If you live in a cold climate, this is going to mean storing up plenty of blankets and cold weather clothes. If you live in an area where it rains a lot, you will need to be sure to store up some rain gear. If you think you may have to survive outdoors in an emergency situation, make sure that you and your family have something warm to put on your heads. Someday after the economy has collapsed and people are scrambling to survive, a lot of folks are going to end up freezing to death. In fact, in the coldest areas it is actually possible to freeze to death in your own home. Don't let that happen to you.
#5) An Axe
Staying along the theme of staying warm, you may want to consider investing in a good axe. In the event of a major emergency, gathering firewood will be a priority. Without a good tool to cut the wood with that will be much more difficult.
#6) Lighters Or Matches
You will also want something to start a fire with. If you can start a fire, you can cook food, you can boil water and you can stay warm. So in a true emergency situation, how do you plan to start a fire? By rubbing sticks together? Now is the time to put away a supply of lighters or matches so that you will be prepared when you really need them.
In addition, you may want to consider storing up a good supply of candles. Candles come in quite handy whenever the electricity goes out, and in the event of a long-term economic nightmare we will all see why our forefathers relied on candles so much.
#7) Hiking Boots Or Comfortable Shoes
When you ask most people to list things necessary for survival, this is not the first or the second thing that comes to mind. But having hiking boots or very comfortable and functional shoes will be absolutely critical. You may very well find yourself in a situation where you and your family must walk everywhere you want to go. So how far do you think you will get in high heels? You will want footwear that you would feel comfortable walking in for hours if necessary. You will also want footwear that will last a long time, because when the economy truly collapses you may not be able to run out to the shoe store and get what you need at that point.
#8) A Flashlight And/Or Lantern
When the power goes off in your home, what is the first thing that you grab? Just think about it. A flashlight or a lantern of course. In a major emergency, a flashlight or a lantern is going to be a necessity - especially if you need to go anywhere at night.
Solar powered or "crank style" flashlights or lanterns will probably be best during a long-term emergency. If you have battery-powered units you will want to begin storing up lots and lots of batteries.
#9) A Radio
If a major crisis does hit the United States, what will you and your family want? Among other things, you will all want to know what in the world is going on. A radio can be an invaluable tool for keeping up with the news.
Once again, solar powered or "crank style" radios will probably work best for the long term. A battery-powered until would work as well - but only for as long as your batteries are able to last.
#10) Communication Equipment
When things really hit the fan you are going to want to communicate with your family and friends. You will also want to be able to contact an ambulance or law enforcement if necessary. Having an emergency cell phone is great, but it may or may not work during a time of crisis. The Internet also may or may not be available. Be sure to have a plan (whether it be high-tech or low-tech) for staying in communication with others during a major emergency.
#11) A Swiss Army Knife
If you have ever owned a Swiss Army knife you probably already know how incredibly handy they can be. It can be a very valuable and versatile tool. In a true survival situation, a Swiss Army knife can literally do dozens of different things for you. Make sure that you have at least one stored up for emergencies.
#12) Personal Hygiene Items
While these may not be absolute "essentials", the truth is that life will get very unpleasant very quickly without them. For example, what would you do without toilet paper? Just think about it. Imagine that you just finished your last roll of toilet paper and now you can't get any more. What would you do?
The truth is that soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, toilet paper and other hygiene products are things that we completely take for granted in society today. So what would happen if we could not go out and buy them any longer?
#13) A First Aid Kit And Other Medical Supplies
One a more serious note, you may not be able to access a hospital or a doctor during a major crisis. In your survival supplies, be absolutely certain that you have a good first aid kit and any other medical supplies that you think you may need.
#14) Extra Gasoline
There may come a day when gasoline is rationed or is simply not available at all. If that happens, how will you get around? Be certain to have some extra gasoline stored away just in case you find yourself really needing to get somewhere someday.
#15) A Sewing Kit
If you were not able to run out and buy new clothes for you and your family, what would you do? Well, you would want to repair the clothes that you have and make them last as long as possible. Without a good sewing kit that will be very difficult to do.
#16) Self-Defense Equipment
Whether it is pepper spray to fend off wild animals or something more "robust" to fend off wild humans, millions of Americans will one day be thankful that they have something to defend themselves with.
#17) A Compass
In the event of a major emergency, you and your family may find yourselves having to be on the move. If you are in a wilderness area, it will be very hard to tell what direction you are heading without a compass. It is always a good idea to have at least one compass stored up.
#18) A Hiking Backpack
If you and your family suddenly have to "bug out", what will you carry all of your survival supplies in? Having a good hiking backpack or "survival bag" for everyone in your family is extremely important. If something happened in the city where you live and you suddenly had to "go", what would you put your most important stuff in? How would you carry it all if you had to travel by foot? These are very important things to think about.
#19) A Community
During a long-term crisis, it is those who are willing to work together that will have the best chance of making it. Whether it is your family, your friends, a church or a local group of people that you know, make sure that you have some people that you can rely on and work together with in the event that everything hits the fan. Loners are going to have a really hard time of surviving for long.
#20) A Backup Plan
Lastly, it is always, always, always important to have a backup plan for everything.
If someone comes in and steals all the food that you have stored up, what are you going to do?
If travel is restricted and your can't get to your "bug out" location immediately do you have a Plan B?
If you have built your house into an impregnable survival fortress but circumstances force you to leave do you have an alternate plan?
The truth is that crisis situations rarely unfold just as we envision. It is important to be flexible and to be ready with backup plans when disaster strikes.
You don't want to end up like the folks in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. You don't want to have to rely on the government to take care of you if something really bad happens.
Right now the U.S. strategic grain reserve contains only enough wheat to make half a loaf of bread for each of the approximately 300 million people in the United States.
How long do you think that is going to last?
Now is the time to get ready.
Now is the time to prepare.
The United States economy is going to collapse and incredibly hard times are coming.
Will you be able to survive when it happens?

That's great XbusyMom. It echoes what I feel.. the only way we can prepare is really on an internal level, not a physical one.

It strikes me, call her lady luck or whatever you like.. but if the universe somehow wants you alive.. she will somehow strive to make it so.

So, imagine the scene... all hell has broken loose...fireballs are raining from the sky... people have succumbed to a strange disease that makes you incredibly horny.. and people are leaving the cities in their droves just to get some rest...away from the infected (kind of like zombies with a twist, you don't get bitten, you er... well... I'll leave it to your imagination)

Anyway... *cough*

Sadly , I don't have a single item on the first list of twenty... but being more than aptly prepared according to the list of 16.. I can't believe my luck, when, casually strolling through the woods out of town, I happen across a lecturer in conspiracy theories who's brought all twenty items with him, but can't seem to figure out how to open the box of matches... We become firm friends and settle down by a nice campfire and dine on baked beans on toast...

Ah.. how the fates intervene....

meanwhile... back in the city.. Joe Survival... who had everything planned and rehearsed...gets to his 4x4 and getaway bags... only to discover his wife took the humvee to visit her mother at the weekend and forgot to fill it up when she got back....

Looks like another hard nights work in the city for Joe....no sleep again for him !

Both of your lists are great. It got me thinking of Bill and Kerry's interview of Pete Peterson (David Wilcock sat next to him). Mr Peterson said to have a CB radio (Citizens Band) to get info on which route to take to get out of town.( he emphasized not just to buy it but learn how to use it properly) and he said money should be gold AND silver. He said if you want to buy a loaf of bread from me and you only have a gold coin. Ill take that gold coin for the loaf or if you have silver I ll take that. He was stressing the importance of smaller denominations of money for buying small priced items. He also talked about having encyclopedias and textbooks and schooling supplies in case the problem goes on for years and you need to educate. Pete peterson said he has traveled the world talking to people that survived catastrophes and he has taught survival courses. he said one thing he heard again and again. That sometimes it was only a second or two between life and death decisions.and that preparedness gives you that edge .He said even today he always has a "bug out bag" ready to leave immediately. I'm paraphrasing his comments and there is so much more survival info he imparted. I haven't watched that interview since the Iceland Volcano erupted it is one of Bill and Kerrys best.

You would be amazed at all the things a human being can pull out and make it happen when the survival instinct kicks in and goes on remote control,if you know what i mean, there is a reason why besides being human we are also animals, the survival instinct is extremely strong within every human being, its just in it's sleeping mode right now,but when all hell breaks lose trust me it will kick in in full gear and you will be amazed at yourself.

just a quick note and I'll write this as "delicately" as possible. Make sure and buy "UNSCENTED,DEODORANT FREE" toilet paper, feminine hygeine products especially the internal ones, and "moist towelettes" baby wipes. (great when their is now extra h2o for bathing.

A co-worker of mine a couple of years ago ended up in the hospital because she used an "internal feminine hygeine "product that had been in the wrapper in an evening handbag that hadn't been used for years. She ended up in the hospital. The chemicals in it mutated. Her Dr. told her these items are no different that cosmetics or medicines and she should have known better than to use it . Who knew !

PS be careful WHERE you store your supplies .Where I live the inside of your garage or storage shed can get to 145 degrees on a 105-110 degree day items can mutate or loose a lot of their shelf life. Something that has a shelf life of 4 years might be ruined after 2 summers.

Yes a bike with the kind of tires that don't go flat. There was a guest on AMCoast to coast a month or so ago i'm sorry I wish I could remember his name. But he said for a couple hundred dollars you should have dry brown rice, several varieties of dry beans enough for a year and that having just that for food gives you a big advantage. I wish I could remember which interview it was.

that’s good except for the fact that having all those books defeats the purpose of the bug-out plan, or if you have all the info on a kindle book – what happens if the earth gets hit with a solar flare and transforms the device into a nice looking paperweight??

Arpheus said:

no, I think the survival mode is being purposely held (and worn out) in the ON mode with “omg-terrorist attack, omg- the water is poisoned, omg- FEMA camps, omg- ?? so that eventually we won’t know the difference (in terms of automatic response of the body’s chemical/neurological defense system) between a real problem situation and OMG – YOU SQUEEZED THE TOOTHPASTE TUBE IN THE MIDDLE AGAIN

that is also a good point,

my point is that we need to spend the time/effort (right now-today) in preparing our bodies and minds to be ABLE to handle anything that comes along... when you work on the master plan; the details automatically fall in place by themselves

detox (eat healthy), get fit (exercise /quit smoking- etc), clear the brain-fog (use the water/fluoride filters, do your pre-action thinking) etc.

then when TSHTF you will already be mentally practiced and ready to make wise split-second decisions ... and you will already have some ideas on how to rework a situation if it doesn’t turn out the way it is ‘supposed to’...

those things are all intangible knowledge ... and THAT is really what THEY don’t want you to get...

xbusymom refering to your (post #2) I love your ideas. creativity, innovation, community, be willing to do the tasks etc etc.. creativity example-one persons leather jacket could make a couple dozen toddler size "shoes" ,a full skirt could make a lot of aprons, 1 sweater is hundreds/thousands of feet of thread, 1 canvas tarp could be 100 sun hats (to prevent sunburn, blistering,It got me to thinking that there should be a handbook (waterproof laminated pages ) that can "bug out" with people . It would have not only technical survival skills but how to set up an emergency CAMP/SOCIAL STRUCTURE of many people , There may not be a FEMA site or red cross site available if the "emergency happens over a large geographic area or near a city of tens of millions of refugees going into the wilderness. So many people nowadays have never gone camping or hiking in their life or it is a distant childhood memory. They would need help--what direction to face your tents/vwhicles doors/windows based on the most common wind direction for that area (usually w.nw.sw) and whether its summer or winter.where to put the camp fires and how to do it safely, where to put the "go potty" area (away from ground water supply) where to put trash (control spread of disease and danger of bears and coyotes etc.) how to SET UP STREETS OF TENTS /vehicles ( If possible wide enough for two vehicles too pass easily, give the streets names) etc based on the type of environment (desert, forrest , woodlands) and slope of the land. Most importantly who are DRS, nurses, paramedics ,dentists, carpenters, military, schoolteachers, experienced campers, hikers, hunters, musicians (they should bring their instruments if theyre not to big as music helps create a bond and a community) Horticulturists/gardeners to identify plants and help begin agriculture if this is a long term event.Pete Peterson talks of a valley where he lives with very high mountains one way in/out that he said could be sealed with a couple sticks of TNT and how there is an entire community of farming, ranching and everything to support that lifestyle for a very long time. This is where he said to have encyclopedias and textbooks and supplies to rebuild society I highly recommend this interview even if its been a really long time since you'v watched it.
Ps your right everyone should get in great physical shape , clear brain fog, and do pre-action thinking, and work on our intangible knowledge

Make no mistake about the reality in which we will be in if this ever happens , not all people are nice like they are in here .

scanner..I get what your saying there are those especialy those in gangs that will think nothing of taking all of your cute little emergency supply bags, camping equipment and your vehicle and leave a person and their loved ones for dead. I agree anarchy, pillage etc. is a certainty especially in and near large towns, cities and megalopolis. the city I live in has a large population of a particular religion that store food and goods per their religous doctrine (usually at least a 2 year supply). They are fully aware that the "have nots" will come after them first and they are prepared. If there is one thing I think all people are aware of because of mega disaster tv shows, movies, acertain percentage of the population will revert back to their dog eat dog primal mentality.by the way scanner I see your location is Sea Level UK (I must move) I hope you get to higher ground in a "timely" manner.

My real concern for others is they may not see the reality in what is a survival situation and how to deal with it . It would be wise to join groups and thats why Avalon was set up by Bill & Kerry so like minded ppl could come together and pass on ideas like this excellent post and forum .

scanner- I absolutely agree with you to try and stay put in your own home/community where you know the territory and your neighbors. I always wondered if a country/countries like the British Isles had a major weather event of catastrophic proportions and people needed to evacuate the entire island--how would they do that ? Is there even a plan in place or has there never been a hurricane or storm that they couldn't hold out for?

Kari Lynn thanks for the suggestions on non-toxic fem. hygiene products. Im' 54 and I'm pass that phase but my 20 yr old daughter could use this info. early on we have used internal fem. hygeine that is made from organic kcotton and "steralized" with hydrogen peroxide and not chlorine. I have always had a suspicion that the pesticides and chlorine in those cause cervical and other fem. organ cancers. anyhow these are all great suggestions to add to the 20 things you'll need to survive.
Does anyone remember the Federal Gun Laws (US) that changed earlier in the year concerning taking guns over state lines. The simple idea is that if you own and register a weapon legally in your home state you can take it over state lines that BORDER YOUR STATE and that you are bound by the laws of your state. in other words your state laws travel with you and your weapon.I still don't think you can take it inside major cities that are gun-free. It seems to me that knowing the laws for your particular state or country are important before you end up in a bug out situation. Don't Red Cross and FEMA shelters tell you weapons have to stay locked up in your vehicle and if you don't have a vehicle you have to "check it in' with them. That's a huge deal that to enter an emergency shelter like a sports stadium or even the local high school you cant have guns on you. I completely understand but I'm just saying.

As far as I know there is no plan to evac anyone from the UK in an catastrophe and I have no faith in the English goverment in doing anything for the people who put them in power . We received a booklet some years ago on short term survival. So it would be a case of sink or swim , we may get some help from our millitary ,but I wouldn't hold my breath . They had a hurricane in the South some years ago it caused lots of damage and a couple of deaths ,thats as bad as it got in the UK . But what we really have a problem with is freezing conditions, our fresh water pipes are only 2'6" underground and we have been informed (unofficially)that the gulf stream which keeps us warm has stopped flowing so this year is going to be a tester for us .
So the end game for us could be this coming winter , I'm as ready as poss but I fear if we get -20c or lower we will just freeze to death because everything would just stop . We had a bad winter last year nearly came to a stand still because we didn't have enough grit for the roads and that was only -10c .

Sorry, but can't help to see the humour in it. LMAO...

As ex military and a survival instructor merely having the intention is not enough. Get your iPod apps and books and go out and PRACTICE! Learn to light fires in all conditions with all types of fire lighting kit. Learn how to build shelters, from basic bivvi, using tarps, debris shelters to more substantial ones. Learn which veg to forrage and what to stay clear of. As to fungi, get expert help, in a short day course in what is good and what kills, or even causes a bad reaction. Learn hobo fishing and snaring. Learn how to use various traps.

You don't have to do it all in one go, but go for a stroll in the woods and practice a little BUT often. Fail of preparation is preparation to fail.

Whats the best kit to carry at all times? A good well made knife and firelighting kit. However, the list below is a basic survival kit that i carry in the car or with me in a bag whenever I go out, away from the masses

Knife, good quality and sharp
Waterproof matches OR flint and striker ( that may be the old steel and flint or modern magnesium fire steels)
dry tinder (small amount as good stuff can be found in the wild)
Steel cup, military crusader cups are best
Torch, small cheap, windup
Drinks kit (bag containing tea bags, sugar, dried milk, bovril drink sachet,) only a small amount to give you a few drinks to keep your core warm
Unlubricated condoms

The above is the very basic. You can go a lot further, but remember you have to carry it.

According to Tom Brown, priorities are:

Priority #1: Shelter. A person can die of hypothermia at 50 degrees F, if wet and in the wind.
Priority #2: Water. 24 hrs without water and there is brain damage.
Priority #3: Fire. For water purification and cooking.
Priority #4: Food. The least necessary element of this group.
