Where would the military machines of the world be without conflict or war in the world? There are many others who benefit from wars and conflict, those that produce the weapons for profit, those that develop techniques used in war, those that are think tanks for future conflicts and wars, and those that seek power over others and their resources for their self centred benefit.

Wars and conflicts, some of which are started deliberately, because their military machines have a need to exist, if there are no wars then these machines, would lose their purpose, and their budgets, and influence.

I recall hearing something about hammering the swords into plows, or something like that?

It's a nice thought, I think it's a bridge we can worry about crossing right after we rid "civilization" of the toxic idea that control and authority are values to be respected for their own sake. Until we do that, this is just a pipe dream

Military could be transformed into ecological task force for cleaning up the Planet too. I would enlist right away for such a "military service" :)

There's an old song that begins "Let there be peace on Earth, and let it begin with me". Everyone says they want peace, but our actions say differently. If we all truly wanted peace we would act like it. We would respect and honor each other. We would get rid of our guns and weapons. Once when I couldn't find a job after months and months of searching, I decided to act like I already had what I wanted. (A job). I went out and established a bank account, something I had planned on doing after i got a job. I let the universe know that I had faith. I took action. (I got a job shortly after). This same priniciple is what I'm talking about. If one by one we all disarmed, we would have peace, because we would co-create it together.
Please note: I am not talking about gun control laws. I am talking about one by one, humanity saying "I will not be a part of this" and putting down our weapons. Keeping them and saying we want peace is like me saying I want to lose weight while keeping a death grip on my package of oreos.

People have to stop thinking that joining the military is worth the risk, for one thing.

Frank Herbert had a lot to say about military psychology in his book "God Emperor of Dune".
He said that it is always the older males who send the young non-breeding males (and the lower classes who don't matter to them) into battle.
It is this "adolescent class" of males who first encounter the predator.

In essence, the problem with our society is the capitalists (and also in Russia, those who take bribes from weapons dealers) who are willing not only to manufacture weapons of mass destruction but also employ unwanted young males and females to deploy said weapons again innocent people.

Also the energy giants who are willing to bathe the countryside in blood just to secure a gas pipeline route, or an oil field on a disputed coast.

As humans we must find a place where we don't need the money our kids make from the military involvement,
and where we don't need corporations to commit genocide against whole foreign populations for a few drops of oil.

We are willing to let others work as our proxies in order to avoid personal danger.
it's been this way with the aristocratic families for centuries.

the power of the common man is his courage, his assurance of his own ability and power to march against the tyrant.
the aristocrat rarely sticks his neck out far enough even to be heard, far less assured.

he always needs a middleman or lackey to get anywhere.

Unfortunatley i think it will be a very long time before we see any signs of this world without conflict but it is a splendid idea, the problem is not only would you have to do away with military forces that invade countries you would have to do away with religion as well. Religion itself is a big cause of conflicts in the world you only need to open a history book and learn about the past to see that, right at this minute the events in Syria are being caused by this as well as rebels trying to kick out the government their. Now Lebanon is calling for a holy war against the hezbollah to protectsunni muslims in Syria and this is just one of many recent examples of extreme religious beliefs causing conflicts, to rid the world of war completely you would have to get rid of religions that have these extreme beliefs and i don't think that would be possible or would work out without causing another major world war conflict. I for one do not want to see that happening and unless their is some sort of intervention by an outside force i think the governments of the world are waisting their time trying to change peoples beliefs by using force or supplying weapons to extremists. They need to stay out of it and stop making things worse rather then thinking they are helping and causing more loss of life.

If I may add here:

"Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace

You, you may say
I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world

You, you may say
I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will live as one"

small edit:
I have been a John Lennon person from 7th or 8th grade when my English teacher gave us the texts of his songs. Posting here Imagine (I am currently re-watching some of the Project Avalon videos and I noticed Imagine used a few times), was a pure coincidence!?

some of which are started deliberatelyOther than back yard brawls, I can't think of a war that wasn't started deliberately. It's a big chess game for the War Pigs who can never seem to get their murdering snouts out of the money trough, and nobody said it better than Ozzy....

War Pigs

http://www.lyricsfreak.com/b/black+sabbath/war+pigs_20019418.html

Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerers of death's construction
In the fields the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds
Oh lord yeah!

Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor

Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait 'til their judgement day comes
Yeah!

Now in darkness world stops turning
Ashes where the bodies burning
No more war pigs have the power
Hand of God has struck the hour
Day of judgement, God is calling
On their knees the war pig's crawling
Begging mercy for their sins
Satan laughing spreads his wings
Oh lord yeah!

According to Dr. Hawkins the world has seen peace for only 7% of it's total existence. That was likely because there was no money or because of plagues.

i cannot remember exactly where I saw the film and what was the name of it, but it was about some ancient pyramids in Mexico, not the ones we know about, as an example of a 1000 years of peaceful existence. it was underlined specifically that some signs have been sought for war or religious sacrifices/dominance- such signs haven't been found so far. if i remember the name of the film i will post it here.
