View Full Version : Nelson Mandela - asking all at PA to light a candle

There is so much I want to say, but it will take a long time for me to gather my thoughts and make them coherent. Maybe I can keep this thread alive and share with you what Nelson Mandela means to South Africans, how his birth of a new South Africa has been trashed, and how in his dying he has lived true to the spirit of who he is (roughly: 1. The ambulance taking him to hospital broke down, just as everything in South Africa is breaking down, even though there is plenty of money, so in his dying he has highlighted that. 2. Water supply to the area in which his hospital is situated broke down, even though there is plenty of money for maintenance, so in his dying his highlighted that. 3. Since his admission to hospital, ANC spokespersons have consistently lied about his condition, just as they lie to South Africans every day, so in his dying he has highlighted that. 4. His ex-wife, Winnie, has been a frequent visitor, even though their divorce was controversial and embarrassing. In his dying, he highlights forgiveness and acceptance).

Nelson Mandela is dying, and his vision of a new South Africa is also dying.

Please light a candle with the intention that he will enter the spirit world with the power to influence and change South Africa in its hour of greatest need ...

By the way, he DID make mistakes (e.g. under his leadership, teacher training colleges were shut down and many thousands of teachers were retrenched, and so we now have a broken education system in South Africa). We are all human and no matter how hard we try, we all make mistakes!

For now, I just ask everyone on PA to light a candle for the powerful passing of Nelson Mandela and for the future of South Africa, the rainbow nation that he led for a few short years, where strength was in diversity (everything good in South Africa came out of those years when he was President).

Go well Madiba!

The rock is the mountain that slowly washes to the sea and beds down as a grain of sand, to in turn rise again as the mountain.
The mountain remembers it's time as sand, as does sand know it's destiny.

I say this in the spirit of highest respect.

There is a technique used by bass fishermen.
When they catch a trophy sized bass in a certain spot they leave that spot alone for a couple of weeks, then come back to find a fish of similar size in that same spot.
This is a phenomenon of natural law.
The first catch opened up a nitch that is filled in due time.
I bow to the spirit and Leagacy of Nelson Mandela, and to the person who will move into that place in due time.

Nelson Mandela quotes -

1. Nothing in this world is impossible and Mandela makes sure to remind us of that.

“It always seems impossible until it’s done.”

2. A lot of people find it easy to be pessimistic and think of the negatives that can arise out of a situation. But in this quote, Mandela shows us that thinking positive is the only way to go. The more positive you think, the more positive the outcome will probably be.

“I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed toward the sun, one’s feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair. That way lays defeat and death.”

3. Living isn’t just about doing for yourself, but what you do for others as well.

“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”

4. An ode to the fact that racism is not passed on genetically, but passed on through teachings.

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

5. Life is a course with endless obstacles to hurdle.

“After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.”

6. We are too quick to give up and refuse to get up from our failures. If we don’t fight to get up, we are giving up on something bigger — life.

“The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”

7. Sometimes you can leave a place and find that the only thing that has changed after all the years is yourself.

“There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered.”

8. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

“If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.”

9. Be brave!

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

10. From the poorest of countries to the richest of nations, education is the key to moving forward in any society.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

He did not make mistake it is one of the best thing he did. Was it not obvious to you that formal education system is used to dumb people from an early age. He wanted to change education system to a real one, one which teaches the important lessons of life.

Lighting a candle is nothing but "forms" in it you will find all kinds of deception. I am sending my good intentions TO the world because that is what he wanted.

I lived in South Africa during the 80s and, like many, thought it would turn into a blood bath. The fact that it didn't was in large part due to Mandela. One of the most moving memories I have is of him dancing behind Francois Pienaar when SA won the rugby world cup in '95.

His passing will be a loss not only to SA but to the world, why can't we produce more leaders like him ?

Candle lit, love being sent.

I don't. At 94, I wish they'd let this amazing man pass on with the dignity he displayed all his life. I personally think he has already 'left'.

I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1961. Lived the apartheid era and was there when the rainbow nation voted for 'peace' in 1994. I was also fortunate to meet him a couple of times. He truly IS larger than life.

He showed us the way, now it's up to us.......

This is the South African National Anthem:

MFW7845XO3g

From Wiki:

Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika was composed in the year 1897 by Enoch Sontonga, a Methodist school teacher. It was originally sung as a church hymn but later became an act of political defiance against the apartheid government. Die Stem van Suid-Afrika is a poem written by C.J. Langenhoven in 1918 and was set to music by the Reverend Marthinus Lourens de Villiers in 1921.[2] Die Stem was the co-national anthem[3] with God Save the King/Queen from 1936 to 1957, when it became the sole national anthem until 1995.

The South African government adopted both songs as national anthems from the year 1994, when they were performed at Nelson Mandela's inauguration.[4] They were merged in 1997 to form the current anthem. The new English lyrics were modified from the last four lines of the first stanza of The Call of South Africa (the English version of Die Stem), and were modified to reflect hope in post-apartheid South African society.

Language Lyrics English translation[6]

Xhosa Nkosi sikelel' iAfrika God bless Africa
Maluphakanyisw' uphondo lwayo, Let its (Africa's) horn be raised,

Zulu Yizwa imithandazo yethu, Listen also to our prayers,
Nkosi sikelela, thina lusapho lwayo. Lord bless us, we are the family of it (Africa).

Sesotho Morena boloka setjhaba sa heso, Lord bless our nation,
O fedise dintwa le matshwenyeho, Stop wars and sufferings,
O se boloke, O se boloke setjhaba sa heso, Save it, save our nation,
Setjhaba sa, South Afrika — South Afrika. The nation of South Africa — South Africa.

Afrikaans Uit die blou van onse hemel, From the blue of our heavens,
Uit die diepte van ons see, From the depths of our seas,
Oor ons ewige gebergtes, Over our everlasting mountains,
Waar die kranse antwoord gee, Where the crags give answer,

English Sounds the call to come together,
And united we shall stand,
Let us live and strive for freedom
In South Africa our land.

A beautiful rendition MorningSong. Love Miriam Mekeba. That Paul Simon version would have been done pre 1994 and is not our officlal national anthem. Nkosi Sikelel forms part of it however, Nelson Mandela insisted that the 'old' anthem be incorporated into the new, showing unity in diversity, as shown in your Wiki link

This is it.... :)

Interesting report concerning Mandela's ambulance journey.

The government has confirmed that a military ambulance carrying Mr. Mandela had engine problems and was stuck on a highway in the pre-dawn hours of June 8 as it tried to bring him to a Pretoria hospital after he reportedly suffered cardiac arrest.

The 94-year-old anti-apartheid hero was kept alive by medical staff and transferred on a stretcher to another military ambulance after the roadside delay of about 40 minutes on the highway between Johannesburg and Pretoria.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/ambulance-breakdown-left-mandela-stranded-on-highway/article12764212/

and from Times of India -

JOHANNESBURG: South Africa's main opposition party on Sunday demanded a probe into the break down of a military ambulance that rushed Nelson Mandela to hospital two weeks ago as the anti-apartheid icon spent 15th day in the hospital.

"It is of great concern that a South African Military Health Service's military ambulance, transporting former President Nelson Mandela and Graca Machel, experienced engine failure and broke down on 08 June 2013," David Maynier, the shadow defence minister, said in a statement.

The spirit of Madiba is perhaps waiting for the bones of his children to be returned to Qunu.

Rolihlahla Mandela (Nelson was the name that a missionary teacher gave him) was born in Mvezo, but his family moved to Qunu, where the family cemetery is located. In 2011, Mandla, son of Madela's son Makgatho (who died of AIDS), moved the bones of Mandela's three deceased children (including his father's bones) from the Qunu family cemetery to Mvezo (without permission and without informing the family). The Mandela family have now got permission from the elders and chief in Qunu (the chief is a woman), as well as from a magistrate, to return the bones to Qunu (and to dig up the graves, which they found to be empty, thus confirming that the bones had been moved). Mandla was not in court to oppose this because he said he never got the notice, but now has indicated that he will fight this court order (he will not succeed and I am sure the legal stuff will be dealt with quickly).

In Xhosa culture, the spirits of ancestors are significant and you do not want to annoy or offend them in any way, so what Mandla did is really not acceptable (locals saw him do it but were too afraid of him to say anything), but the elders have agreed to do the necessary ceremonies to appease the spirits of those whose bones have been moved in relocating them back to their original graves. Nelson (as everyone knows him) Mandela has indicated in his will that he wants to be buried at Qunu next to the bones of his ancestors and his children.

If anyone wants to ask questions, I will try to answer them, but, according to the elders, there is a spiritual reason why Mandela is so critically ill yet still alive.

Why did Mandla move the bones? He has not given an adequate explanation, and so it seems as if he wanted to ensure that Nelson Mandela is buried in Mvezo, and thus making it a major tourist destination. It seems as if some ANC government officials colluded with him (and also gave him heaps of money to build tourist facilities at Mvezo).

I think it will be okay as the elders in Qunu know what to do to put these dislocated spirits at rest.

By the way, in Xhosa tradition, Nelson Mandela's gravesite cannot be a public pilgrimage site. The family cemetery is where family go to honour and communicate with ancestors, and it not for outsiders, so after he is buried, only the family can visit his grave, and maybe a few other people under exceptional circumstances (I see that a wall is being built around that cemetery now).

Thanks for the candles. As I light candles, I am trusting in the elders to put this right so his spirit can be with the spirits of his ancestors and his deceased children in peace.

A beautiful scene of Nelson Mandela popped into an inner-eye vision I had last night while meditating and it showed him waving to a cheering crowd of billions who were welcoming him home. Even though he's currently hanging onto life-support, he is already 'up there' now. He's already passed over and he will live on forever in the minds and hearts of all who love him -- and for hundreds of generations to come -- and for all eternity.

I really really liked Mr. Mandela's life through his actions towards working together to solve large problems. He was a role model to me. :humble: Actions speak louder than words. He didn't always succeed or get his way, but he stood tall to face diversity head-on.

He probably won't get it, but it would be nice to build a terrific monument in his honor.

Nelson Mandela spends 95th birthday in hospital

Nelson Mandela is spending his 95th birthday in hospital in Pretoria, as events take place around the world and in South Africa in his honour.

South Africans are being urged to match the former president and anti-apartheid leader's 67 years of public service with 67 minutes of charitable acts.

Mr Mandela, who is in critical but stable condition with a recurring lung infection, entered hospital on 8 June.

President Jacob Zuma said his health was "steadily improving" (http://www.thepresidency.gov.za/pebble.asp?relid=15748).

"We are proud to call this international icon our own as South Africans and wish him good health," Mr Zuma said in a statement.

Happy Birthday Tata Madiba!

http://mg.co.za/article/2013-12-05-nelson-mandela-dies

Will try and digest and share thoughts in the days to come ...

"I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal, which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."

I have been thinking about racism in the past few days (the influence of Tata as he died, and so sad that he died without talking to us one last time!) ... in an encounter with another, passing or prolonged, 9/10 times I cannot honestly remember the colour of the person's eyes, but, 9/10, I will be able to recall the person's race (and height, weight ...). I have a long road to travel.

PS The rumour mills are churning that he has been dead for quite a while (technically, he has been comatose for may months) and that the official announcement of his death is political spin (google Nkandla scandal and Public Protector reports to see why the ANC needs something to tip the odds in their favour to keep control of the gravy train right now, ahead of the 2014 national elections.)

SDV, I think the rumour mills are 100% correct. The timing is just too perfect – (in addition to your observations) the annual summer holidays starting next weekend when Mandela's funeral will be held, the public holiday (Day of Reconciliation) the day after his funeral, announcements on CNN early this past Friday about funeral arrangements not even the local media knew, the controversial and massively opposed toll-road system that came in operation this past week, etcetera.

My guess is that he was on life support that was turned off Thursday evening as agreed by the ANC/family. I have dealt with the ANC and was in partnership with one of Walter Sisulu's sons – this smacks of their modus operandi and this is not what Mandela would have wanted...
