This story is quite amusing in one sense and a relief to know the old school
spying game is still going on. I suspect every embassy in the world is bugged
by some intelligence agency or other as one of the worlds oldest professions
has been struggling to keep up with technology and finding a place post cold
war.The war on Terror has given all 'Spooks' a lease of life.....

Ecuador's London embassy 'bugged' for Assange meeting

Published: 12:42PM Thursday July 04, 2013 Source: Reuters

Ecuador says it would seek the help of the British government to determine who put a
hidden microphone in the South American nation's London embassy, where WikiLeaks
founder Julian Assange is holed up.Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said a microphone
was found inside the office of the ambassador to the United Kingdom, Ana Alban, while
he visited the embassy to meet with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on June 16.
Mr Assange, who was granted asylum by Ecuador last year, lives and works in a
different room within the embassy.

"After this discovery, the government of Ecuador will request the collaboration of the
British government in investigating this issue to discover who is implicated in this
espionage operation," Mr Patino told a news conference in Quito.Earlier in the day, the
Foreign Office in London declined immediate comment on the allegation and Prime
Minister David Cameron's spokesman said he did not comment on security issues.
Mr Patino added that Ecuadorian authorities "have reason to believe that the bugging
was being carried out by the company, the Surveillance Group Limited, ... one of the
biggest private investigation and undercover surveillance companies in the United
Kingdom", he said.

The Surveillance Group did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

‘Infiltrated from all sides’: Bug found in London’s Ecuadorian embassy

A hidden microphone has been discovered in the Ecuadorian ambassador’s office in
London, said Ecuador’s Foreign Minister, Ricardo Patino. He denounced the find as yet
more evidence of the loss of ethics at an international level in government relations.

“We regret to inform that we have found a hidden microphone in the London embassy,”
said Patino at a press conference He added that he had received intelligence that
pointed at the origin of the security breach and would reveal it later on Wednesday.

The device itself had been discovered almost three weeks ago on June 16 in the office
of the Ecuadorian Ambassador to the UK, Ana Alban, in a routine security check ahead
of Patino’s visit.

“I did not bring this up before because I didn’t want my visit to London to hold talks on
Julian Assange to be confused with accusations over this surveillance device found in
the ambassador’s office,” he told press.

The head of the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry stated that he would have to consult with
President Rafael Correa on the issue and they would require an explanation from the
country responsible. Moreover, Patino clarified that he was not insinuating this discovery
had anything to do with the US spy network, revealed by whistleblower Edward
Snowden.Patino went on to voice his concerns that the Ecuadorian government was
being “infiltrated from all sides.”

“This is a testament to the loss of ethics at an international level in the relations that we
have with other governments,” noted Patino.

During his visit to London, Patino held negotiations with his British counterpart, William
Hague, to push for the safe-conduct of WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, to Ecuador
where he has been granted asylum. Assange has now been holed up in the Ecuadorian
embassy in London for over a year as UK authorities threaten to arrest him if he sets
foot outside the diplomatic mission. The British government refused to grant Assange
safe passage to Ecuador and reiterated their commitment to extradite the whistleblower
to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over accusations of sexual assault.

Ecuador is also currently assessing the asylum request of former CIA employee Edward
Snowden, who is held up in Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport. He is currently unable to
travel as his passport is invalid. Washington has issued an extradition order against
Snowden under the espionage act and called for international cooperation in returning
him to American jurisdiction. The US threatened the Ecuadorian government with taking
away a lucrative customs tax agreement if the Latin American country grants Snowden
asylum. The Ecuadorean government reacted with ire, stating that in the face
of “insolence” and “threats,” Ecuador will renounce its trade benefits with the US.

Enemy of the State (1998) Predicts Edward Snowden's Revelations

june 2013

Enemy of the State was made in 1998 and stars Gene Hackman,
Lisa Bonet, Regina King, Will Smith, Jack Black, Jon Voight, and
Jason Lee. This all-star cast stars in a film that performed well
in its time, yet seems all the more relevant, intelligent, and
interesting today. Edward Snowden didn't say too much that
this movie didn't exactly say! It's pretty mind-blowing how
intelligent and well-informed script-writers were... or at least
they were great guessers.

I always took it for granted since the Cold War days that all of the big foreign gov't offices were bugged. I doubt that people will be very surprised by this. Good to see solid evidence coming out these days.

Funny, in the movie at 17:33 an agent asked how to cover a conspiratorial maneuver issued by his superior, John Voight is telling him to pull off and he says without skipping a beat "tell'em it's a training op"...

it's all there, right in our face...

The US government is even spying on itself, through a program
called the Insider Threat Program. President Obama instituted it
right after Bradley Manning's leaks came out. It is designed to
force federal workers of every agency to rat out their coworkers
if they think they are acting like they might want to leak something
or talk to anyone about their jobs. The Resident (aka Lori Harfenist)
discusses why the US has this spying obsession.

Look one layer deeper, in most cases. The films are not predictive, they are reflective.

They pick up what is out there, they repeat it.

The information was out there before they made dramatic play scripts that are based on the data.

They come to places like Avalon for ideas, the leading edges of human expression and communication.

Ideas that can be brought to the 'general public', and make millions of dollars for the tele-play manufacturing effort.

This could turn around on the very grounds that there are no regulations regarding spying. Because, when it gets out there that there ARE no regulations, the little people will catch on and start spying on the spies. Ultimately, they will shoot themselves in the foot.

Enemy of the state has always been one of my favorites, and every time I watch it I get another little tidbit of info. You are right, there is much inside information funneled through Hollywood.

So Clever Are German Spies in Their Disguises... (1914)

Clearly the title refers to that old propaganda story used by the
press in both World Wars that German soldiers would disguise
themselves as nuns. However, the footage is a mystery - these
are clearly just nuns, and there is nothing to suggest they are
under suspicion of being Germans in drag.

A sure sign things are deteriorating when they have to publicly announce they are creating a big brother spying program within their existing big brother spying program. It will create so much distrust and cynicism, backstabbing, skull duggery, "suicides", everyone will be a suspect... the beginning of the end... the karmic end game of all secret societies caught out in the open (absolute denial, and an even more oppressive dictatorship) ... which in will create a total lack of trust and an atmosphere of paranoia and witch hunts...

It lowers the quality of society as a whole. Who wants to live in 1984? (except the top 1%) I would like to see all those involved pay the price for their moral compromise, either in this life, or the next...
