Referee Kills Soccer Player, Gets Beheaded in an amateur soccer match in Brazil. It
happened in the Maranhão region of northeastern Brazil. Thirty-year-old Josenir dos
Santos Abreu approached the referee, 20-year-old Otávio Jordão da Silva (pictured
above) during a match to argue a call. Abreu reportedly threw a punch at da Silva, who
then took out a knife he was carrying with him during the match, and stabbed the
player. Abreu died of his wounds en route to the hospital.

Meanwhile, the player's friends and family invaded the pitch and attacked da Silva. They
reportedly tied up the referee, beat him, stoned him, lynched him, and then quartered
him. When they finished, they cut off his head and placed it on a stake in the center of
the field.

So far, just one man, 27-year-old Luis Moraes Souza, has been arrested for the crime,
and authorities are searching for two more. Valter Costa, the chief of police in
Maranhão's town of Santa Ines, spoke in a statement. "Reports of witnesses have
indicated some people that were in place at the time of the fact," he said. "We will
identify and hold accountable all those involved. A crime will never justify another.
Actions like this do not collaborate with the legality of a state law."

I have such compassion for all who suffer from this event. Complete senseless violence. We are certainly a primitive form of human life.

On a positive note, goes to show you why those extraterrestrial life forms :ufo: from other planets and dimensions are a bit shy of wanting to land near soccer stadiums in Brazil :crutch:

Hey mate,

This event summarizes what really is the role of football here in Brazil, and why the government and media stimulates the people to make football an essential part of their lives.

Panis et circenses; Bread and Circus...Keep people well fed and distracted then you can do whatever you want and they wont even notice...and even if they notice, they wont care...and even if they care, they will forget about it as soon as their favorite team wins another match.

Football works as an escape valve, through which people channel their potentially "dangerous" energies to something as insignificant as a sport. Could you imagine what would happen if, instead of directing all that anger to that referee, people directed it towards our corrupt government and institutions?

Football is not a sport around here...It´s a collective illness. It´s involuntary anger management therapy. People indoctrinate their children to focus all their energy, hope and intention at absolutely meaningless symbols, which are football teams and their shirts.

Really, I have nothing against the sport itself, but everything against the way it´s used to create complacent and ignorant imbeciles...

You should see the tv news around here...They report all sorts of political scandals and corruption crap for the first 30 minutes and then finish with 10 minutes of football news; When it finally finishes, people don´t even remember anything important.

Football...Brazil´s daily blue pill.

Its the same is over here to a slightly lesser degree, Football was the working mans game up until the 1970's when it got infiltrated by gangs of hooligans
and most of the larger clubs had elements who just turned up on match days for a fight . There have been several movies/documentaries about that period
and it was not just the working class from the estates that got involved all members of society were drawn to the local/mob mentality.

Things have changed with the introduction of all seater stadium and the emphasis in family entertainment and the hooligans have either died out or
moved elsewhere. There is the occasional bit of friction but nothing like it was when it was refered to as 'The English Disease'...

The scary thing about this is it was a small public playing field, with no security just a stupid manslaughter with vigilante justice !!

Brazil has the World Cup next year! I suppose the argument will be that the official matches will be held in stadiums with greater security. I certainly hope so!

Is anyone here thinking of travelling to Brazil to see it? It's enough to make you reconsider I think.

I read something a few years ago about the football hooligans in the U.K. Cidersomerset. When the rave scene started (in the early 90's I'm guessing) the football hooligans started going to the rave parties, taking the drug ecstasy. Basically, as a result of taking the drugs and the rave scene, huge amounts of the hooligan gangs lost interest in the violence in favor of the dancing and drug taking at the rave parties.
I'll have a look around to see if I can find any links.

What has happened in Brazil (where I am now) is an absolutely shocking, insane story. May the victims rest in peace.

Hey my friend,

I advise everyone to do not come here for the world cup. Spread the word to your friends and family.

We will not allow it to happen. There will be huge protests in the streets, and huge violent conflicts as well.

The Brazilian people do not support the world cup and all the corruption involved with it.

The government had spent more money with this stupid cup than the sum of the money spent in the three last world cups...Tens of billions of dollars stolen from the Brazilian people.

We don´t agree with spending that much public money with a stupid event that will only benefit the rich, while there are so many public areas that desperately need investment.

We wont take it anymore.

I wish you luck Raf, though I am fearful for the sheep who will stampede into your country to see some games oblivious to the world in general other than seeing a ball in the back of the net, I hope for their safety too
