Not the top story of today, but I found this of some suspicion. Especially the text in red.

Barnaby Jack, World’s Most Elite Computer Hacker, Dead At 35

Barnaby Jack, reputed to be one of the best computer hackers on the planet and head of embedded devices at security firm IOActive, is dead.

The 35 year old was highly respected in computer security circles, often finding ‘back doors’ into systems that left them open to cyber attacks.

He found fame when he publicly hacked an ATM machine making it give out random amounts of money in a technique that became known as ‘jackpotting’

His death, which is being described as ‘unexpected’ by friends, occurred on Thursday in San Francisco. The Medical Examiners Office has confirmed his death, but has given no other details so far.

He was due to give a lecture at the Black Hat Event in Las Vegas, which starts tomorrow. His presentation entitled “Implantable Medical Devices: Hacking Humans” was due to be given on August 1st.

Jack had discovered that medical devices such as insulin pumps and heart pacemakers could be hacked from a considerable distance, causing the pumps to dispense fatal doses of the drug and pacemakers to malfunction seriously enough to stop the wearer’s heart. The presentation was to explain to companies the vulnerabilities of such devices and how they could be improved to prevent tampering.

In 2006 the FDA began to approve fully wireless pacemakers and other medical devices and that’s when the vulnerabilities began to show up.

With millions of implantable devices in use in the United States alone, the possibility of some kind of mass murder atrocity is a very real one.

Black Hat said in a statement:

We have lost a member of our family. Everyone would agree that the life and work of Barnaby Jack are legendary and irreplaceable. Barnaby had the ability to take complex technology and intricate research and make it tangible and accessible for everyone to learn and grow from. Beyond his work in our industry, Barnaby was an incredibly warm hearted and welcoming individual with a passion for celebrating life. We all have a hilarious and upbeat story about Barnaby. He is truly a shining example of what we love about this community.

Black Hat will not be replacing Barnaby’s talk on Thursday, Aug. 1. No one could possibly replace him, nor would we want them to. The community needs time to process this loss. The hour will be left vacant as a time to commemorate his life and work, and we welcome our attendees to come and share in what we hope to be a celebration of his life. Barnaby Jack meant so much to so many people, and we hope this forum will offer an opportunity for us all to recognize the legacy that he leaves behind.

Our deepest sympathies go out to Barnaby Jack’s family and loved ones. Words cannot adequately describe how much he will be missed, but it is certain that Barnaby will NEVER be forgotten. (source)

What killed Barnaby Jack remains to be seen though it’s distinctly possible we will never know for sure. It’s not inconceivable that someone, somewhere may not want the vulnerability of implantable medical devices, and of medical drug administration apparatus to become common knowledge. It would after all be a very convenient way to kill millions of people without even laying a finger on them.

Reminds me of the Sandra bullock movie "the net", in which a bill gatesesque villain does about the same thing as above.

He was a genius really. He also figured out how to get the atms to keep on giving....
Hopefully he gave his information to others. His sister lives in NZ

Hacker dies days before he was to reveal how to remotely kill pacemaker patients

Once again ... if you know something that the bastards in power would kill to keep quiet, and have the credibility and evidence to back your story, don't tell the world you're going to tell them ... at some future time and place.

http://rt.com/usa/us-warns-medical-cyberattack-721/

The FDA is warning that implanted medical devices, such as pacemakers and defibrillators, are often connected to networks that are vulnerable to cyber attacks that could shut down or manipulate the machinery.

Hackers with malicious intentions could introduce malware into the equipment, thereby gaining access to configure settings in medical devices or hospital networks, the Food and Drug Administration said in a warning sent to hospitals, medical device manufacturers, user facilities, and biomedical engineers.

Maybe it wasn't the government.

IMO, what they don't want to have happen, is to have the warning and the truth to occur right at the point of inception. Right at the introduction of the idea of implants. That would kill the dream of controllable cyborgs and controllable people... right before that timeline can even begin.

He was about to nip it in the bud. He was about to slow it down enough to give people TIME to reflect on it, before it was fully inserted into the system. He was in the moment of breaking the flow and march-step of jackbooted agenda.

on the other side of the coin, the given corporatist that pulled off this stunt, is going to have their ass handed to them in a hat.

when this sort of thing happens to black hat hackers, directly in their midst, in the deepest areas, you can bet that they Will strike back and there is no peace to be found in these areas. All this did was do the equivalent of setting the highlanders off, and getting them to organize and come down from the highlands. And kick some serious ass, until it is done, done, done.

It's one of those things that crystallizes a point of 'this means war' on all levels. The single given corporatist who did this is going to find themselves with a severe lack of friends, as they incited what will be a slow burning directed riot..... in a group who are not to be messed with.

All they did, was to make it worse. It will not serve as a warning, it will serve as an alarm bell and and focusing notice/wake up call.

If this was a hit then I truly hope it's enough to get his friends to do something substantial towards the responsible individuals. Out them all the way.

Give CNN 24 hours and perhaps an Obummer speech and we know what comes:

With your systems background, you know what I mean; don't give hackers a point of focus. And every 60 year old computer sciences teacher is a hacker, at their core.

A good, ethical hacker was erased.

This mobilizes and crystallizes all of them, all of the people who create these computerized infrastructures which we have today. The people who know the hardware and the software from the basic electrical level all the way through to the programmed hardware and software. They created this computerized world.

I know, for example, the top man at a major organization of this type, the kind that created this world we know today. IQ literally in the 200 range, all oriented toward this end of things. He will hear about this and he will not be amused.

And in that moment, he will achieve focus. Just like the rest.

Just like every computer and electrical engineer and specialist. Every computing sciences student and every engineer at every university and college, student or teacher/prof. They will hear about this and they will begin to understand what they are looking at.'

Somone has tipped a domino that the hidden agenda people knew should never be touched, for as long as possible. Something has been set in motion, inside of the depths of the very thing that underwrites their entire modern system.

And in that moment, he will achieve focus. Just like the rest.
I was having an ear test done, many years ago, when my hearing started failing. The doctor put hot and cold water in my ear, to test my ear's balance response. Like most people, I started getting dizzy. Then suddenly, I stopped the dizzy reaction, which surprised the doctor, as usually only ballerinas and ice dancers, with their training in rapid spinning, could do that, and I was certainly neither of those. I explained to him that "the human mind is a powerful instrument, if you can just get it focused in one direction." He nodded and understood.

Focus matters.

The common focus of many people matters a lot.

The common focus of many key people of considerable ability in the critical computing and networking infrastructure of our civilization matters will not be denied.

Perhaps if they had been able to wait until those who built our computer and networking infrastructure had died out, they would have had a better chance. But we're still here, and they were in too much of a hurry.

A hardcore hacker can have a contingency plan strong enough to perpetuate his work in case of absence (natural or not), if that is what he wants. The more hardcore, the more stronger this plan can be. Let's hope (pray if you are inclined, or hack if you are a hacker so) that his work continues as deserved. RIP

He worked for IOActive and they have provided a tribute on the fb page: https://www.facebook.com/IOActive?ref=profile

Here is the link to the advice re hackable medical devices: http://www.industryweek.com/technology/manufacturers-medical-devices-warned-about-hacking

The company also recently released the "how to hack cars" (think Michael Hastings) http://onforb.es/1bNjPCa http://www.forbes.com/sites/andygreenberg/2013/07/24/hackers-reveal-nasty-new-car-attacks-with-me-behind-the-wheel-video/ (the link does not appear to work very well for me and keeps closing.) but from what I can read it is very descriptive!!
