UK’s great Internet firewall to censor access to esoteric and occult websites
UK Prime Minister David Cameron has recently set large segments of the world up in arms by deciding to set up a country-wide firewall that will block access to pornography unless citizens opt out. (Similar measures were tried earlier across the EU and summarily thrown out.) But the block apparently won’t be limited to porn: ISPs will also be forced to block violent material, extremist sites, pro-anorexia and pro-suicide sites, alcohol, smoking, web forums (?!) and even… esoteric material.

Cory Doctorow at Boing Boing relays:

You may be saying to yourself, hell, how are they going to be able to sort out which websites are unacceptably pornographic, let alone which sites are “smoking” related? That’s a damned good question, and the answer is “with the broadest brush possible.” Huge chunks of the Internet will be effectively unreachable, and which sites go into the censorship bucket will be decided upon in secret, by unelected employees of big corporations, like China’s Huawei. Sure, you can untick the box if you want, but as David Cameron’s advisors will tell you, defaults are powerful and most users never change them.

By putting clamps on the Internet, governments are likely to not only alienate their citizenry, but also the ability of their own economies to stay competitive on the global stage.

The censoring of “esoteric material,” in particular, has pagan groups up in arms. (Presumably Ultraculture will be blocked from warping impressionable young British minds into lives stained with pernicious sins like thinking for themselves, questioning mainstream values and caring about the environment?) Pagan community discussions are being conducted at Wild Hunt and LAShTAL. Meanwhile, a new service called Immunicity has appeared which circumvents the firewall—better get hold of it before Cameron starts blocking access to ways to get around the firewall. Nikki Wyrd has another good examination of the issue at the UK-based chaos magick site Blog of Baphomet.

Such a New Inquisition, as Robert Anton Wilson might have put it, shows how terrified Western governments are of the Internet undermining not only their ability to keep secrets but also, by connecting people and services, many of their reasons for existing at all. If I was a government plutocrat sitting in the White House or 10 Downing Street and watching the Arab Spring happen due to Twitter, I’d be **** scared too. But in putting clamps on the Internet, governments are likely to not only stifle the flow of free expression and alienate their citizenry, they’re also liable to throw wrenches in the progress of online business and the ability of their own economies to stay competitive on the global stage.

It also, of course, raises massive questions about religious freedom, and the absolute human rights emergency of the state deciding that diverging from mainstream religious beliefs is apparently now forbidden.

How far will the UK (already revealed by Ed Snowden to be far more advanced along the surveillance-state path than the US) go in cracking down on Internet freedom—and will the United States follow suit? (I wrote up further analysis here.) Let us know how you feel in the comments below and at our Facebook group.

From the control freak's point of view, the beauty of the word "esoteric" is that it can be given whatever definition they choose to give it. Basically, it will mean any information which could lead a reader to understand their true nature and their true power, and therefore the utter uselessness and irrelevance of politicians and state-endorsed religions.

Well... Grrrr...

dare I say.. such draconian forms of sanctioning of 'freedoms' in the name of moral governance was/is inevitable because in the name of
'political correctness', etc... we have gradually handed over whats left of our sovereignty to the 'over lords'...

No smugness intended / but true concern: I frankly just wonder why would any rational person be surprised?!
The false sense of security I see so frequently espoused here and elsewhere re the internet (social networking) being the peoples voice/saviour.. has always rankled in my gut.. and here is the evidence why / in progress.

A sad, worrying day.... but the skin from the eyes needs to fully dissolve before we are collectively fit to meet the challenge.

Meet the challenge we must.. sounding like Churchill / chuckle!
But my faith remains..

Of course this was coming, I've always wondered why it has't sooner.

So much new knowledge and old knowledge (same thing) has come out recently ( thank Goodness) that has opened a lot of eye's, eye's that our government's (lol to call them that, Dictator punishers and Dark-occultists is what they are!!) are now worried that the awareness of it's slaves is now spreading to deep, to strong, to right!

Hmm I have to stand back from this great concerning and worrying issue because it makes my blood boil, i'm giving off to much energy and vib's in the wrong direction and to the wrong beings.

And it causes a defeatist energy and sadness in me mainly because I might lose all of you. I will always be an Avalonian no matter what!

It will be a great blow to the awaking consciousness of the human race if we all lose our knowledge growth and links, all be it the internet links!
To be safe I am grabbing as much of the best info as I can onto disk and stick for my own knowledge base and as an aide to show those who haven't seen and awaken yet!.

BTW a working link (For now) to your first post link Ria:

Me thinks the horse has already left the barn on that one, and people talk...

Ever try keeping water in the palm of your hand by squeezing it?

P.S. The above link didn't work, but here's one that does:

Fred the interesting thing is that most people, have been living many years with various degrees of Internet censorship and in larger or lessor degrees are unaware of it.

How does one know they are being censored from information they are unaware that even exists in the first place?

I have a Canadian friend whom is a teacher in Japan.
He and I generally meet up for a coffee and discussion about once a year during his visit back to Canada.
One thing he often comments to me about is how he is amazed at how much the internet is censored here in Canada relative to Japan.

We depend on Google, and Microsoft for so much of our access to information awareness.

We seldom while searching for information on the net, reach the actualization, that the information we're hoping to locate, is subject to a guardian of information, controlling our access to this information.

I often tell people, for Google, it is like them stealing candy from a baby.
How do you steal Candy from a baby?
All in stages.

Problem :ohwell: - reaction :mad2: - solution. :clap2:

There is a petition here, I don't know if there are any more ongoing.

http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/uk-prime-minister-david-cameron-stop-the-unnecessary-censorship-of-esoteric-websites-and-web-forums

To:
David Cameron, Prime Minister
Ms Jo Swinson, Secretary of State for Employment Relations and Consumer Affairs
Tessa Jowell, MP for Dulwich and West Norwood

Please stop the unnecessary censorship of "esoteric" websites and "web forums"!

Prime Minister David Cameron, we are asking you to stop the unnecessary censorship of helpful, genuine, well-meaning "esoteric" websites and web forums, amongst others, so that you do not impinge on the rights of law abiding citizens to free access of information, and to conduct their affairs.

We also ask for clear, transparent communication on this matter, and a promise that ensures that genuine websites and associated businesses will not be harmed by a myopic viewpoint on what is acceptable content.

Sincerely,
[Your name]
