Anti-NSA activists hold rallies in US
Activists protested Sunday against the National Security Agency’s surveillance programs that track Americans’ phone and email records.
Thousands of people held rallies across the United States on Sunday to protest the recently revealed surveillance programs run by the National Security Agency (NSA).
It was the second national day of protest by privacy campaigners against the NSA.
Similar demonstrations were held on July 4 following the revelations by American whistleblower Edward Snowden about NSA spying programs.
During Sunday demonstrations, protestors held rallies and marches in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Washington, St. Louis, Raleigh and other cities.
They aimed to “draw attention to the NSA’s unconstitutional surveillance program,” and to protect the principles of the Fourth Amendment of the US Constitution.
"The tide has turned against the National Security Agency’s unconstitutional phone and Internet monitoring," said Ben Doernberg from Restore the Fourth NYC.
Doernberg said about 400 protestors picketed an AT&T building, a place where they said the NSA used to carry out its dragnet surveillance activities.
The front page of Monday’s New York Times stated that opposition to the NSA’s surveillance has “momentum that even critics say may be unstoppable.”
In San Francisco, high-profile figures such as Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg spoke against House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi over her opposition to a recent amendment that sought to defund NSA programs but failed to pass in the House.
Also during the next few weeks, campaigners plan to target politicians in their local communities during the summer Congressional recess and in October when they return with more national events.
Snowden disclosed to the news media top secret documents he had obtained while working as a contractor for the NSA which showed the spy agency is carrying out massive surveillance on both American citizens and other nationals via phone and the Internet.
