I have always been a vivid dreamer both while asleep and awake. Sometimes I fly, sometimes I have battles in the galaxy on organic ships that seem to come into existence as I think them up, I have died completely on several occasions, I see aliens, I talk to animals, and I am an awesome rally car driver who seems to narrowly escape death at every turn. However, the one of recurring dream that always puzzles me are these fish flying in the air dreams.

It usually starts with the fish being in some kind of tank. The tank is always very large and I have the sense that it belongs to me. Often I am cleaning the tank or moving it from one place to another or somehow caring for the tank. On a few occasions, the tank is just in the room I am in.

Most of these dreams include a portion of the dream where I introduce the fish to the tank. Sometimes they are fish I already have, but more often, they are new fish that I buy in my dream. They are all tropical colorful fish and they come in many different shapes and sizes. I am sometimes looking for a specific fish that the shop keeper doesn't seem to have and I always feel annoyed about that. I am not sure what that fish looks like because he never has it. I call it the mystery fish. I know that is is spotted, colorful and ornate but only because as I am looking at the other fish I think to myself things like, "that one is to plain, that one isn't bright enough, that one is only one color with no spots."

When I get the fish back to the tank and put them in, I sit and watch them swimming around their new home. Within moments, the walls of the tank fade into nothingness and the fish begin to swim around the room. They swim in the air as if it is water. I am very sure they are in the air and that I have not joined them in the water. It is that point that fascinates me. I walk around looking at them act as if they are in their natural habitat, but they are swimming around the bed, under the table, up to the ceiling and all around me. Most of these dreams do include a larger fish who will eat one or two of the smaller fish. It never seems to upset me, though I usually think that next time I should buy similarly sized fish.

I never feel fearful that the fish are out of the water. I somehow know they like it and are happier than they were in the confines of the tank. None of the fish act aggressively toward me, I feel that they accept me as a necessary part of their environment, like they want to be near me. I am always pleased with the fish I chose and think I should go get more fish. I like them and I like watching them swim all over the place. I feel joy and curiosity.

I have my own idea as to what I think these dreams mean, but I am curious what interpretations others might have. Please feel free to share any thoughts or ideas that come to you, even if they seem silly or far fetched, or if you have never interpreted a dream before. :o

I will be happy to tell you what I see.

It seems you have always been a seeker. A seeker of spiritual knowledge based on the traditional interpretation of fish. Also a very Christian ingrained symbol so it makes sense you probably started in that venue. Perhaps you still lean that way but regardless what I see is you likely read, watch, listen to, or otherwise absorb like a sponge anything and everything that sparks your interest, your curiosity. You feel in control of your emotions and quite spiritual but in this self discovery you've changed some at various times more than others. Your perceptions, perhaps your mannerisms, maybe even your tastes and likes, dislikes and so forth and you feel the pressure now and then in waking life. This is digested, synthesized if you will through dream in the big fish eating up the smaller because to me the bigger fish represent the more dominant belief system that easily devours away this other spiritual theory or that one regardless of how 'colorful' or 'entertaining' they may be. Like everyone you seek the one true answer. The one that answers it all, the end all to your search shown clearly by the mystery fish which equals the mystery knowledge you must have, have to seek, that curiosity demands. Like the thirst that can't be quenched you have so much your head spins and as the old saying goes for a time, at least until you put things in their proper order and get a handle on the pressure of probably family because you won't eat the meat anymore or you don't like this particular vegetable now because you learned something about and so on when you once again feel things are all in their place. Your spiritual standing can be seen, examined, judged and only when it gets too overwhelming does it crop up that you have these dreams. Probably shortly after a family pressure event or something new you've just recently absorbed that has your spirit head spinning again..

That's what the dream tells me. ;)

I don’t have time to write much because I have to get ready for work, but having dreams/seeing flying fish is not that uncommon. I haven’t had any lately but a number of years ago I was having dreams about flying fish and as I shared this with two other women at the time I found out they were also having dreams about flying fish. Around that same time I discovered information about Coventina, who, much like Bridget, was revered and associated with springs. She also was associated with flying fish. I have a friend who I had asked to paint a picture of her and when I asked some time later I found that she hadn’t finished it because Coventina kept changing her appearance. When I meditate on who she was I, too, keep getting changing images. I intuitively got quite a bit more info about her and encourage you to look into who she was/might have been. Anyway, fascinating subject but I must go now.

the fish are the souls,
the tank is the personality, the temporary limitation/confinement/garment of the soul, still transparent almost ready to dissolve and eventually does,
the air is the ocean of consciousness where all souls return to freely swim

Wow! I love the responses! I'm going to sit with these thoughts for a while and absorb the knowledge I've been given within each of your perceived meanings.

It's funy to see this brought up. About a year ago I was building a fence in my yard and I took a break. I laid down in the back of my truck and was looking at the sky. I saw what appeared to be two black fish swimming in the sky. One was about two feet long and the other half that size. My first thought was could it possibly have been two pieces of papper and then I realised they were going into the wind. Very strange.
