Many countries have professional operators including access to private contractors.
Their methods are various, some are to make a political point, others are clandestine to blend in with natural occurrences such as accidents and heart failure. Other methods of course is the target of the operation just disappears.
The use of such tools for these operators include the classic sniper rifle, hand gun, or just a plain base ball bat. But much more sophisticated methods are used by professionals. Such as high end drugs to instigate certain medical conditions with terminal intensity. The use of microwaves and electromagnetic pulse weapons have been used by professional operators of some governments, and not usually the weapon of choice for independent contractors.
And whom are the targets for these contractors? This of course varies, from criminal elements, to national security threats. So how many individuals have been the target of such activities, this is hard to say, but I'm sure its much more than we think.
