Lovelock: 'We can't save the planet'

Professor James Lovelock, the scientist who developed Gaia theory, has said it is too late to try and save the planet. :eek:

The man who achieved global fame for his theory that the whole earth is a single organism now believes that we can only hope that the earth will take care of itself in the face of completely unpredictable climate change.

Interviewed by Today presenter John Humphrys, videos of which you can see below, he said that while the earth's future was utterly uncertain, mankind was not aware it had "pulled the trigger" on global warming as it built its civilizations.

What is more, he predicts, the earth's climate will not conveniently comply with the models of modern climate scientists.

As the record winter cold testifies, he says, global temperatures move in "jerks and jumps", and we cannot confidently predict what the future holds.

Prof Lovelock does not pull his punches on the politicians and scientists who are set to gain from the idea that we can predict climate change and save the planet ourselves.

Scientists, he says, have moved from investigating nature as a vocation, to being caught in a career path where it makes sense to "fudge the data".

Finally, someone saying like it is in the news! I get the feeling this man has much more respect for Gaia then for mankind. A very refreshing article on the actual reality of what is happening now.

Hi Solphilos, I believe he is the real deal. He understands that earth has it's own agenda's when it comes to it's own evolution. It is not going to matter what mankind does to hinder or help, changes will still occur, it is only natural.

I'm watching it now, and though I disagree with what he is saying about us being the cause of global warming, I do agree with some of the other ideas he presents.

The earth is it's own organism, and personally I don't think that it would ever allow us to destroy it.

Theres this plant that grows up in northern canada, I can't recall the name, but it is a primary food source for a certain rabbit that lives there. About every three years or so, the rabbit population begins to grow so exponentially that they become a problem and threaten not only that particular plant, but others as well.
At the same time period of this great increase in rabbit population, this same plant begins to produce a toxin that is highly lethal to rabbits, and within a few years their numbers begin to dwindle once more down to a more stable level. Once they are down, the plants begin to propagate without the toxin once more, and the cycle continues.

I've always found this fascinating, as it shows that there is a higher intelligence involved upon the earth, and every being that dwells here is a part of this higher mind

Swanny, yes earth is ascending and will be here long after mankind has walked her shores. She has her own destiny to follow, but she certainly did a good job as a landlord to all us crazy humans! She could have kicked us out long ago. ;)

This guy is part of the elite, he gives me the shivers. I want Gaia back from any refence to this guy. He wants nuclear energy, believes in man made climate change !! (which is nonsense, we all know that dont we?) and wants a big reduction in human population. Shame on him, his theories were nicked from the shamans anyway...

How about who we are, why we are are and what we are here for?

I would say, start at the deepest level you want. Why don't you begin at the beginning, with the two top items on your list: Who we are, and why we're here? It would seem to me that every other issue springs from these two - even plastic.

Surely the ultimate objective is to try and Harmonise everything.

The prospect of trying to harmonise the 7 billion human beings on this planet, imo is totally unrealistic.

Therefore a realistic proposal has to be put forward which is SMART ( Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, & Timeframed )

As much as we all find the thought of population culling as repugnant there doesn't seem to be any other realistic solution.

Bear in mind we have no hesitation in culling animal populations when deemed fit.

Population growth cannot be allowed to continue at it's present rate and neither can the squandering of Earth's resouces.
