Adenovirus is more of a respiratory illness, ranging effects from a common cold through to bronchitis and pneumonia in extreme cases and people with a compromised immune system.
Has your friends child maybe contracted the adenovirus and its triggered meningitis?

The above link states:
Adenoviruses may be infrequent cause of meningitis. Ad3 and Ad7 account for two-thirds of all adenovirus-associated meningitis.

Adenovirus
Adenovirus is a rare cause of meningitis in immunocompetent individuals. The infection may occur simultaneously with an upper respiratory infection.

Simple cures, for serious illness, eh?

Got just the ticket.

Got 35 cents? The infant needs a baster or dropper or 1/4 inch of broth in in a bottle, to strengthen the immune system, since it can't eat a garlic clove. Inside the "CHICKEN Ooodles of Noodles package" is a flavor pack. Pout a thumb print size amount or 1/4 teaspoon in a bottle with bottled water that cools to room temperature. 3 times the 1st day, then every 12 hours. When the child wakes, and before bed for night draft body temp changes when sleep.

It will relieve the mucus membranes in the throat if child is heavily congested and have the aspirator when they cough it up and suck it out the body. Infants can't spit sputum out, it has to go out through bowels or up through the throat when coughing. Imperative the germs when the body rejects them, are removed, even if you have to catch them with a tissue on the tongue. Be ready when the cough starts because the baby will cough it up, but they are used to swallowing, so you have to catch it before it is swallowed back down.

Once this occurs you'll see rapid health improvement. Catch that cold, has real meaning in this case of an infant.

Good healing for your friend, and if the child/infant is between zero and 3 months. If the child is older, than just put a little in their hand, and then let the child lick it. Sometimes they take to the sodium, which dries up the cold in the body, but sometimes you have to fool them with soup and crackers.

God's speedy recovery to your friend and their baby.

PS I raised 6 of my own, 3 of someone eles plus 6 siblings when Mom worked 2 jobs. They now they use the same on their children, because it really works and is natural, without side effects or shutting down of kidneys and liver.

Little girl involved in this case is still in hospital, can't hold her head properly, or support her own weight on her legs...has got her temper back, so that's a good start.

Lifebringer, interesting concept...and interestingly, I started coming down with something Friday (will start another thread on it probably), and the first thing that I wanted instead of the evening meal was vegemite...lots of it.
