View Full Version : New Island Spewing Flammable Gas

A giant island appears suddenly, following a huge earthquake in Pakistan. And now, the thing is emitting toxic, flammable gas. What's caused all this to happen? Discovery News explains.
Sorry about the sound.

People here were talking about methane outgassing, co2, n other nice gases here on av not too long back.
If this had happened inland it is likely the vent would become a volcanic lake like nyos or monoun.
Since it is in the water it may collapse toward seafloor once gas is displaced.
Good place for diamonds too...
p.s. skywiz I wrote the above on a phone sorry was so short.
didn't mean to sound impersonal and not type TY for thread.
Hunt and peck is bad.
p.p.s.
But a geophysicist with the US Geological Survey isn't so sure. "The methane in this region we know about (is) deeper and offshore," he tells ABC News. "It's not the most likely scenario. It could also be carbon dioxide, fluids in the ground."
Whatever it is, scientists won't have too long to study it: The island is expected to sink back into the sea within a year. Meanwhile, the death toll in the quake has risen to 348, per the AP.
last year I wrote a letter to USGS saying they would see an event like this soon.
based on my research of vanuatu and other sites, and the NZ pumice raft.
they LOLed and said have a nice day.
I bet they are not having such a nice day not knowing what's down there.
they SAY there is no "KNOWN" methane source.
but who knows, the ocean is the final frontier and all that
from the email logs:
The USGS does not have any positions for people like yourself. We have to follow the scientific method in our work, which isn't quite consistent with consideration of 'aptitudes' such as yours.
Thank you for your interest.

Thank you for your reply! It's an honor, actually.
But I remind you, as a researcher,
the scientific method can be used to study anything you can observe.
Statistics and averages are plenty real in the world of science.
Some scholars and sensitives will display a significant trend of accuracy in predicting natural disasters when compared to their peers.
In the future, I believe your field will expand to include understanding of quantum events, like humans sensing earthquakes.
There might be no formal positions at USGS, but I am sure that consultants do exist who display "aptitudes" in this area with great consistency.
I will continue with my research and interest in this matter.
Considering the experiences, my interest is in fact mild and of no great importance to my life at this point.
Other people might not feel so ambivalent having experienced this so many times.
I am sure that the Vanuatu trench will continue to be of great interest to your community, and the recent methane outgassing that your scientific method cannot explain -- according to the mainstread media -- will eventually acquire interest as well.
Good day.It looks like it was written this year, as late as february.
weird sorry about that i thought it was last year.
time flies only when you're having fun heh

My nephew got two black diamonds on this island yesterday. The Government should take over the island immediately and restrict people to enter.

Go there people, May be u’ll all find a diamond or a sapphire etc.The Island will hopefully be there long enough.Everyone says that it is gonna go under the sea once the monsoon begins next year.
p.s. when I tried emailing USGS to follow up on this subject, I got this message:
You have reached Joan Gomberg. Due to the lapse in appropriations, I
am prohibited from conducting work as a Federal employee, including
returning phone calls and emails, until further notice. If you urgently
need to speak with someone at the USGS regarding emergencies or matters of
protecting life and property, call (703) 648-7411 or (703) 648-7412. For
more information on the shutdown, please visit the Department of the
Interior website at www.doi.gov. Thank you."
this shutdown is a lot more serious than people realize, if it's keeping USGS from work
p.s. my dumb email from today inspired by your thread: lol
Hello Ms Gomberg and USGS
I couldn't help but notice after the quake in Pakistan recently,
a new island came up from the water.
The news is saying USGS is having trouble explaining what kind of gas they think is leaking from this new feature.
I was wondering what you guys think about this in the context of having been told at the beginning of the year,
that you would continue to find such outgassing as occurred in NZ (pumice raft) interesting.
Not because you would give it attention or anything but because it's going to keep happening.
Is there a reason the USGS won't tell the media what types of flammable gas come from these vents?
I wondered if the secrecy had more to do with the natural resources appearing on the island,
such as diamonds and other by products of magma upswells.
Everyone who has read Congo knows why volcano tubes are exciting to people.
Also anyone who has read about Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun should have a lot of questions about what is happening in our modern world.
it's really funny how it doesn't matter which agency is speaking, whether it's CERN or USGS or anyone else;
the thing they have in common is a tendency to say "we don't know what causes this".
I call Bull****! no offense.
Someone at USGS definitely knows what causes this and is not being forthright with the press.

A mud volcano could spew hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, sulfur dioxide. There would be small amounts of propane, butane, ethane and other associated hydrocarbons. Possibly some nitrogen and helium, but not necessarily..

Quakes shaking the bottom and loosening the plate. Maybe from fracking, but they will never tell you. Russia, UK and others have been extracting minerals offshore for years. In fact if there wasn't any gas, oil or other resource, this country and any other wouldn't even bother with it other than to cover it up if it presents a danger. They think we're too stupid to figure that out. Stuff like that doesn't come out in the schools they have us in, but if you're am inquiring mind, school never stopped your research, anyway, and they are fools to think it.
I've been an encyclopedia observer since my eyes opened, I'm told.
