IS THE discovery of rare "sea serpents" off the coast of California at the weekend a sign of an impending disaster?

Carcasses of two of the sea snake-like creatures, of 5.5m and 4.2m in length respectively, were discovered washed up along the state's coast last week.

According to Japanese folklore the so-called 'monsters of the deep' rise to the surface of the ocean and beach themselves to warn of a coming earthquake, CBS Los Angeles reports.

In the months before the Fukushima earthquake disaster, over a dozen slender oarfish washed ashore or were caught by fisherman on the country's northern coast near the quake's epicentre.

"Japan is bracing itself after dozens of rare giant oarfish - traditionally the harbinger of a powerful earthquake - have been washed ashore or caught in fisherman's nets," the UK's Daily Telegraph reported at the time.

The March 11 2011 earthquake and tsunami caused more than 15,000 deaths, according to Japanese emergency agencies.

The damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant went into meltdown.

Scientists, however, disagree with the ancient fable and say there is no scientific relationship between sightings and seismic activity.

"It's probably just a coincidence," Rick Feeney, a zoologist at the US Natural History museum said.

See, I knew it because just like my book, I heard it within. I didn't educate myself in geological studies. It said: "the waters below are churning slow." I guess churning being energy to melt or thicken for butter, but energy just the same.

If the earthquake correlation is correct, then a) Fukushima must have been a natural disaster after all, and b) either there are very few oarfish off the Californian coast, or the coming earthquake is going to be much smaller than Fukushima.

A Japanese guy commented to the effect of the information in the OP recently, that yes indeed, even the common people in Japan know the correlation between finding these fish about and experiencing a quake of historical significance.

That really creeps me out.

I am in no real hurry to see CA get hit -- personally I think Seattle would be better LOL

I feel sorry for the fish and whales and dolphins who don't get any warning other than their face blown inside out when an undersea quake is too close.

Yes, dead fish, specifically species which live on very deep regions of the ocean, may be a sign of submarine volcanic eruptions which are common companions to earthquakes.

Those eruptions emit all sorts of poisonous substances, most commonly sulfur, which consequently kills the local aquatic life.

However, only two dead oarfish are not enough to achieve a solid conclusion. If there are more cases like this in the near future, then that's something to worry about.

It's better to increase the monitoring of such occurrences, though.

These two dead oar fish, especially their size is enough to raise my eyebrows and wonder. Gonna be keepin my eyes peeled to see if there are more signs like this poppin on the news. This is a bit more rare and odd compared to a beached whale or two in my opinion.

They were observed only sporadically this year, including by the commercial whale-watching industry.

Humpbacks I think eat sardines, perhaps why they are scarce in that area....but this disappearance of sardines may somehow be related to the oarfish thing (a long shot but who knows)

This subject has bothered my for a while,
they can't find any signs of what killed the fish in their bodies?
Sudden changes in temperature,and pressure, seem likely to kill even whole schools.
In a case like that they might have lost their navigational sense because of something else.
Extreme shock waves from volcanoes might be another one, however in all cases I can think of there would be telltale signs.

Am I the only one who is bothered by the fact that everyone is smiling in the photo/video while holding up this large, beautiful creature??

Seeing a hunter hold up a trophy buck that they killed while hiding up in a tree, covered in scent, using an advanced firearm, and smiling as they take a photo by their kill is enough for me. It is nothing more than an ego boost for people who proclaim hunting for sport as a test of manhood.

But this just strait up breaks my heart. Here we have this massive, beautiful creature that has been symbolized as something of a magic serpent in ancient and modern lore being nothing more to some people as a trophy "buck." The people holding up this beautiful creature do not seem to have any remorse for this creature, nor any concern for possible causes of death or what this could mean to impacts on humanity.

This is further proof that humanity has become so detached from nature and our spiritual connection with all life in this universe. Not only do we have wildlife being slaughtered in so many horrific ways, but now we have people who feel euphoria when a beautiful creature washes up dead on a shore. It breaks my heart.

At the airport back in Frankfurt they were called aside into a special chamber and interviewed by some nasty secret service types. All their samples, notes and Laptop computers were confiscated. They were forced to sign some kind of non disclosure paper.

We all know by now that a special contingent of 2000 US marines invaded Aceh province after that, who had strangely been ready on their ships in the vicinity and were heavily armed (and with no "humanitarian goods") to facilitate a part autonomy from Indonesia for that oil rich province. Edit: "Oarfish" are the "omen"... i.e. before any pressure wave could knock them out; that is, they show up dead as precursors to a tsunami-triggering EQ as happened prior to the Fukushima tsunami.
