October 24 2013
AMERICA, the nation which gave the world 307 Nobel laureates, has today shown that its media is about as smart as one of its famously dopey teen beauty pageant contestants.
In a bizarre map produced by NBC News, pretty much the whole of Australia is depicted as being ablaze this week.
You might have thought the bushfires of the past week have been confined largely to New South Wales, but noooo. Not according to NBC they're not.
According to NBC, pretty much the entire country is on fire, including vast swathes of Cape York, the entire Darwin region, and vast portions of Western Australia's Great Sandy Desert where you'd be lucky to find two blades of grass to rub together.
Now, it turns out there may be an explanation for what appears to be a major cartographical catastrophe.
In all likelihood, NBC has taken the image from a Geoscience Australia product called Sentinel. Sentinel is a national bushfire monitoring system which uses satellite data to enable emergency service managers and other users to identify fire locations across Australia.
At any given time, the map will show hazard reduction burns, bushfires which pose no threat to life or property, plus of course much more serious bushfires like the ones we've seen this week.
That's the mistake which NBC appears to have made. They've taken every fire on the Sentinel map and assumed they are all part of the current emergency.
They've also more or less assumed that the whole of Australia is NSW, which is disturbing given the network spent pretty much the whole of the Sydney Olympics camped on the Opera House steps. You'd think they'd have picked up a little Australian geography during their extended stay.
Then again, perhaps they thought they were in Austria all along. Or maybe all those kangaroos hopping down George Street left them a little muddled or something.

That would explain some of the posts here...
Seemed like it was thought that the fires were all over oz but couldn't work out why.
Looks like the south island gets missed from the map again.
Not a bad thing: Out of sight, out of mind.

Australian military explosive exercises caused this and the people should fire them and replace who gave the order in 100 degree high winds and droughted trees. They are beyond stupid to do that and should be held accountable, but the people pay for the military through their taxes so, how do you hold them accountable, if they are paid by the people through their taxes, other than finding the dim bulb that gave the order. Was it planned, was this a faux disaster to obtain more money?
Enquiring minds want to know.

I was doing a bit of research into Marrangaroo Base and didn't realise it was the base where all the old WWII Mustard Gas Shells (www.thechronicle.com.au/news/munitions-experts-to-destroy-old-gas-shells/596504/) had been found. Found an interesting site on Chemical Warfare in Australia (here (http://www.mustardgas.org/)) that has heaps of images about it and even of the volunteers who subjected themselves to exposure for a couple of shillings a week (here (http://www.mustardgas.org/photos.htm)). Here's a short doco about it (why they've got subtitles for the ol' Aussies I dunno):

One might find, if they look deep enough, a court case of where a fired (or did she quit?) actual journalist who worked for 'fox news'. It went, IIRC, all the way to the supreme court in the USA. I'm reciting this from vague memory, so it may not be fully precise, but you will get the general idea.
I think her firing had to do with fox trying to have her falsify news...and she refused. Fox was going to be brought to court, for lying, for misleading the public. The legal ramifications is that the FCC might have been forced by public recognition of the situation and public outcry, to revoke Fox News' Licence to broadcast. The elites and insiders would have none of that! They found a way, via legal weasel wording.
What Fox did, in order to get what they wanted (what their owners wanted, the fascists insider secret society types wanted), they ended up changing the name of the parent company to Fox Entertainment, and then....ran the branch of "Fox News", under the department of Fox Entertainment. This allowed them to put their NEWS under the heading of legally pushed and promoted SATIRE. Entertainment, NOT news. No legal repercussions for fabrication of any kind or use. It's all satire! Legally speaking, that is...
But they never told the public that 'Fox News' is now legally and operationally running under the same category and intent as The Onion' website and similar news satire shows.
In this way, they earned the right to tell the public 'satire', not truth or facts -- but whatever they wanted. All they had to do, was to keep things on the edge of being 'plausible' and they could keep stringing the public along, the public thinking they are an actual news agency.
Hey, they're playing by the legal rules, folks, one just has to take note of these things.
I think this is tied to it:
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article1212.htm
It is my guess that NBC has (or is in the process of, ready to leap to it if they get caught) re-structured themselves along the same lines as 'Fox Entertainment', or moving in that direction. No one would notice, as it is just a quiet re-filing of their business structure on one application and a few letters being changed at one level of legal and paper wording at the corporate level. In that way.. they can get away with satire posing as news, and not be legally responsible in following the rules and regulations of 'news reporting'...which is tied to to their legally renewable and under regular examination broadcasting license...a broadcasting license which could be revoked (if challenged by the public).
THE USA had developed all these rules and regulations to protect the public interest. They did this due to earlier levels of lies and fabrications in print, before the television days. Hearst News, and others where caught lying to the public too many times and the public outcry made them introduce government offices to officiate over who could 'report' and who could not.
What was then done, when that roadblock was issued, the creation and enactment of offices of the US government (regulatory commissions and departments) to block decay and corruption in even a minor way...there was a slow but sure move toward controlling the doorways to obtaining public office, so as to control the avenues of public recourse - recourse the public, in their limited and controlled awareness...feel exists in their given country.
Democracy is a great cover and sham, if you allow it to unravel into hidden tyranny, by not staying awake and aware 100% of the time.
This is just the continuing fight between awareness of the public vs robber barons, railroad tycoons, oil tycoons and corporate tycoons (all insiders and working together these days). They are taking it to the next level of 'legally' weaseling their way out of their agreements. (+85% of us publication of news, electronically, on air and in print, is controlled by 6-7 people, which was a study reported by the university of Ohio, I believe.)
This is the modern version of the newspaper wars (to control politics, countries, and public awareness) of the 1800-1900's.
it does not matter who is the figurehead in the presidential office, the government control and manipulation juggernaut rolls onward and upward. No president in US history, in nearly the last 100 years, has made a lick of difference in the actions and motions of this hidden juggernaut.
http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2012/12/05/fccp-d05.html
No one should be concerned with any form of political party, they should be concerned with breaking the controlled system apart. Nothing more. The ability to work within the extant systems is largely gone.
These people are not playing by the rules they have advertised to you. Mentally speaking, in the aspect of understanding where you stand, where the public stands....Stop bringing a knife to a gun fight, or you will continue to lose.
Essentially, it is not just bad reporting, for ratings, it is deliberate intent to mislead, to drive the public into specific states of mind. This drive is coming from the top of the NBC system... but those below that top level, are probably thinking it is ratings, as that seems 'plausible' to people who do not have the full data set in front of them.

NBC publishes wacky fire map, then Time magazine thinks Sydney is right near Perth

Artist's impression of the US media's knowledge of Australia. Source: Supplied
OK, this is now just becoming depressing.
Hot on the heels of America's NBC News publishing a map which grossly overstated the extent of out-of-control blazes in New South Wales, Time magazine has made a few bloopers of its own.
On Wednesday, Time published a story (http://world.time.com/2013/10/23/australias-epic-wildfires-likely-affected-by-climate-change-no-matter-what-prime-minister-says/) with the following rather provocative headline: Climate Change Affects Australia's Epic Wildfires - No Matter What Prime Minister Says.
We'll leave the debate over the link between climate change and this particular fire emergency for another day.
What's worth mentioning here is that Time magazine mentioned in an earlier version of its story that New South Wales was in southwestern Australia.
Hey, you only missed by 3000km or so guys. That's like putting Washington DC in San Diego. No biggie.
And there were more. We'll let Time's diligent corrections people speak for themselves.
• An earlier version of this article misstated that New South Wales is in southwestern Australia. It is in southeastern Australia.
• An earlier version of this article misstated the name of the executive secretary of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change. She is Christiana Figueres, not Christina.
• An earlier version of this article misstated the name of a former Prime Minister of Australia. She is Julia Gillard, not Gilliard.
All of which begs the question: Is it that hard for these supposedly reputable American media outlets to write a story getting a few basic facts right about little old Australia?
That's a rhetorical question but we'll answer it anyway. Yes, apparently it is.
NBC's problem was that it took a Geoscience Australia satellite map of every fire currently burning in Australia (including hazard-reduction burns) and assumed they were all part of this week's disaster.
Time's problem could be that they haven't got the hang of the internet yet. Either that or they didn't spend enough of it (time, that is) checking a simple thing called a map.

PS - Went to the Doctor today with an unknown illness...
I said: "What's up Doc - What's the Diagnosis?"
He replied: Mate you have a (Serious) case of 'Climate Change Syndrome!"
I replied: So what do you prescribe?
He replied: "Read the MSM news every day, Trust everything your Govt. tells you and don't forget to watch 'Al Gores - Inconvenient Truth/ and you'll be right again in no time!"
Maybe it was Al who caused the bushfires?

Carmody, the case IIRC was Faux against a journalist couple who were tasked with visiting, and documenting a country...then were presented with the spin and script that was to be the point. THey refused and were sacked.
Appealed, and Faux argued that they were a provider of entertainment, to a target audience, and therefore their slanting of the facts was the provision of entertainment...and they won.
Faux News argued themselves that they don't have to tell the truth, they are there to spin the world how their "customers" want the news spun...

Brain death is the irreversible end of all brain activity (including involuntary activity necessary to sustain life) due to total necrosis of the cerebral neurons following loss of brain oxygenation. It should not be confused with a persistent vegetative state. Patients classified as brain dead can have their organs surgically removed for organ donation. Even after brain death, the working of the heart might continue at a slow pace, but there will be no respiratory effort.
Brain death, either of the whole brain or the brain stem, is used as a legal indicator of death in many jurisdictions.

Alright ... no wish to engage in battle here ... that isn't the point.
Pete Peterson suggests that about 15% of the human population is immune to mind control due to their "alien" genetics. That seems reasonable and he is a pretty smart cookie.
I expect that *YES* close to that figure is under mind control to varying degrees and unaware of what is being foisted upon them.
Perhaps americans get a heavier dose on mind control thrown their way ... but clearly it is worldwide.
I guess I am a bit more sensitive to what most on this planet have to endure than simply suggesting they are "braindead" and laugh about it.
I'll leave now.

Australian irreverant/anarchic humour is based on a keen sense of irony..
which seeks to push against, bastardise and dilute the facades of the ptb.
Yes, this stinging sattire may offend those not of the bandwith due to cultural difference
which is unfortunate...
'The Chaser' team push the envelope of exposing political and social hypocracy to the enth degree, also meaning that in the past its members have served time in goal and had their very popular TV show shelved for a time..
The thing is we need those prepared to throw matters into the acid bath in order test the boundaries of free speech/ 'Democracy' on our behalf...
Comedy importantly plays out its part in smashing our distorted mirrors, exposing our raw under belly and debunking the concepts that inform the status quo. Seems to me since 9/11, America's policy of blinkering its citizenary with propaganda has been uncovered and the people are waking up in droves.. proof positive in the dynamism and discernment seen here on Avalon and in the brilliant ascerbic sattirists of the U.S. seen on our TV screens here in Aus'.
The ability to laugh at ourselves personally and collectively is in my view one of the sure signs of resilience and enlightenment / it opens up the soul and clears out the debris of egoism. Elements of the Australian psyche is still young, eager to tear down 'wankers' in authority, this brashness is a kind of compensatory smothering of the old undertowing "She'll be right mate.. no worries". Conflicted as may be, national identity is where all peoples can litmus test their projections, patterns and responses...
Hopefully this dialogue about a countries humour brings up a churning of debate which is healthy to have..
:p
America in its infancy blew the world away with its daring anarchy, a beacon to freedom and justice... the brilliance of which irradiated belief in the attainment of self sovereignty in the hearts of mankind. Be assured we irreverant Aussies (still rediculously tethered to The Crown :drama:) do not overlook that fact!

Is this all to do with the term "braindead"?
I really am confused here.
In Australia calling someone braindead usually means that they don't give much thought to what comes out of their mouth.
They speak without thinking and what they say is bloody ridiculous.
That's about it as I understand it (though there are extensions on this in different regions and groups of the population).
I thought this was a normal saying and understanding of it around the english speaking world...
How about this vid that gets pulled up periodically cause it's bloody priceless and shows typical Aussie irreverence:

15 Years ago, Auckland suffered a major electrical blackout; I was enroute to Sydney on a plane at the time. When we arrived at the hotel, Aussie MSM were reporting the WHOLE of NZ was in darkness! ;)
I didn't even know you lot had electrickery back then!
Just thought you sat around sheepish in the dark at night.
Easy to pull the wool over my eyes!

Dunno bout that bloke, I've seen some big strong tough marines fall flat on their arse after a jug of full strength (what we call "super").
I once had a can of budweiser and gave it to the dog. He had a sip and tipped his bowl over. Fourex for him if there wasn't any Emu Bitter (EB) around (though he developed a like for Boags when we shifted here).
There is an old joke in Oz about the dunny flush entertaining Sepo's but you've kind of covered it already.

Struth recap, I'll be buggared if I know what you're on about.
It's like you're a six pack short of a good time, I know I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but buggar me.
This thread is as mad as a cut snake and I'm as dry as a dead dingoes donger in the desert so I'm off like a brides nighty down the rubba dub for a shout or two.
Oh and I'll stop being a numbnut on this thread cause it makes as much sense as a cane toad in the desert.

Leery of Lies: American Distrust in Media Hits Record High
“That’s why they call it the American Dream, because you have to be asleep to believe it.”

PS ~ i have many Aussie friends who i have met (in real life) who can hilariously (and graciously)
tell a good tale ... from that knowing though ... i have also learned (from them) to sense and realize when a jib is really just a jab ... no pun intended here Mr J ...
Now back to my endless threads ... so to speak ...

Jacko ...
Don't judge americans based on msm of which fewer all the time take heed of (like close to none that participate on this forum).
I am happy to see you back ... yet consider your message:
And in other news, 98 per cent of Americans have been declared effectively braindead. Source: Supplied
Do you really believe that???
I find it remarkable that anyone with your intelligence and intuition would post such a thing.
Calz, Jack is only testing to see which percentage of you is Avalonian and which is still the Murican.... ;)
Gotta laugh Ulli :)
1. This thread was about the 'Inaccuracy' reporting of the Australian Bushfires from the (MSM) nothing more, nothing less!
2. Which just happened to be from an American news service (Totally Irrelavent) as to what Calz got his knickers in a knot over...:faint:
So before Calz accuses me in of being a (Murican - Anti American) he should just simply get his (Facts) straight and stop jumping to idiotic & unwarranted conclusions..!!!
Its hard to phathom that some still don't understand my (Australian Sense of Humor) after posting here for years..!
Again...
This thread was about the 'Inaccuracy' reporting of the Australian Bushfires from the (MSM) nothing more, nothing less!
Added to that is the growing (Lack of Trust) in the MSM's reporting, wherever it comes from!!!
Perhaps in future Calz, you should just stick with your buddies on your (NEVER-ENDING) threads...:yes4:
Yeah Jack, but that's like saying that we don't understand your way of driving..when we finally get upset... when you constantly slam into other cars on the highway and cause accidents, over and over.
Sooner or later ...you and your car get permanently taken off the road, as you refuse to learn how to drive in a crowd.
Sooner or later ...you and your car get permanently taken off the road, as you refuse to learn how to drive in a crowd.
Thank God for that, never been a follower and certainly never one to follow the 'Rules' or 'Crowd'...:neo:
Aussie Translation...
Blood-Hell Maaaate, Stone the (flaming) crows, are you trying to take the piss out of me? Sometimes I reckon those who follow the 'Crowd' are about as useful/handy as pockets on a singlet or 'Tits' on a Bull!
Bugger me dead, the lights are on, but no-one's home..!
Just between you & me & the gatepost, (Shut the Front Door) you can't have one foot either side of the fence if its made from barbed wire..!
Its lunchtime, gotta go an ave me regular "A Dogs Eye and Dead 'Orse" and wash it down with a few Coldies...
Seeya...

A brief intervention here. The thread was drawn to the mods' attention.
I was very pleased it had been. I read it from start to finish, and my verdict is that it's the funniest thread I've yet read on Avalon.

Okay :)
An American, an Australian and a Russian passengers are going on the train. The American introduces himself: "Bill", the Australian: "Bill", The Russian: "Bill". The American and Australian exchanged some glances but said nothing. After a while the American pulls out a Coca-Cola bottle, drink it, and say with pride: "Buffalo Bill. The Australian takes out a Kiwi , cut it with a boomerang, and says proudly: "Boomerang Bill".
The Russian get up, kicks his shoes off and reveals six toes on each foot, and says with pride: "Cherno - Bill."

"Aussies, I just don't think they get us !!"
I do think that we have a pretty unique way of viewing
The world and expressing ourselves that goes over
people's heads that are not experienced in our culture.
The sad part is we as a nation- (and I hate to generalize
But I think this is true ) have hearts of gold and would
To that extra mile to help out someone in need.
Maybe we need to start a thread on what it means to
be Australian.....
Americans seem to take things very literally and
personally.

We could also start a thread on what it means for the rest of the world to have Australians around. :)
And another on Aussie jokes. (This would be unending, and extremely upsetting to everyone.)
And another, definitely, on cricket.

Just think of it...unravelling five decades of work of creating a PC world and having to start over,
with an Oz version of PC *integrated into the older version.
It would need a pole shift, mate, if you ask me......
And lots of Fosters....

Now now guys...think we've just about sucked this billabong of Aussie cliche dry
Its been wonderful to see the rallying of support
But comes a time when we need to call it a day, cos' ya know this would feel patronising:
[COLOR=red]Maybe we need to start a thread on what it means to
be Australian.....
[/COLOR
We could also start a thread on what it means for the rest of the world to have Australians around.
Eer yer reckon!
You know what guys, I say this with due respect: lets do call it a day eh...its been loads of fun and the support n' appreciations been great n'all, but facts are... the city slickers and boffins of our nation would be well gutted at all this gratuitous use of potted 'streine lingo. Whatsmore they'd accuse no hopers like me of perpetuatin' the cultural cringe in full view of all the Poms n' Yanks here..
So its time for me at least to sling the cliche' portrayal, chuck out (naaa thats a bit harsh- should say... hang-up) me thongs and me sweaty bush hat, and to get off the XXXX n' Bundaburg Rum (shudder)... before I OD and get sucked into this vortex of sus' mythologising for keeps. Expect our 'inglorious bastard', yet appealingly dynamic and notorious mate Jack now fully gets the rub...
So I'll take a bow, stage left and return to being satisfied with my voyage in self soveriegnty with a decent glass of wine in hand.
Love to All in gratitude
H.
