Some lenses being sold as novelties can cause blindness, a warning from the FDA has been issued.

Cosmetic, or appearance altering "contact lenses" have been sold for "amusement" purposes, such as something to wear for Halloween events, or didn't you just want to look like a "lizard", or "cat" or snake?

Thanks BobD! This is a timely reminder for the 'season'. Bootleg lenses ARE a problem. A movie studio can afford to pay $200 for a good FX cosmetic lens that will not damage your eyes and employs makeup artists who DO know how to apply them (especially the schlera lens that covers half or all of the eye), but the $2.99 - 7.99 pair of cat eye lenses that CAN be bought online from who-knows-where are far more likely to have manufacturing defects, break down faster, and be much harder or softer than 'normal'.

If you are going to wear them for the holiday, please do your homework. Consider them temporary disposals that must be used with care. Seriously, they probably should not be worn more than 4 hours at a time, even if they are 'good' for more than one wear. Here is just one link for those folks who do not normally wear glasses or contact lens, and do not know how to care for them. http://www.eyehealthweb.com/how-to-clean-contacts/

Makeup artists and folks who do FX makeup or cosplay, and/or enter costume/makeup contests use cosmetic/fx contact lenses, most without prescriptions, but they ALL know how to they must be cleaned, sterilized, and inserted properly to prevent damage or infection. They know where to buy the FDA approved lenses, and they READ the instructions.

Please be kind to yourselves.

In BMT contacts were flat-out banned.
Those with needs had to wear "BCGs", jokingly known as "birth control glasses" because they look like a 50's nerd! lol

BMT bans them because under stress and without the time to clean the lenses, kids can quickly develop corneal lesions and blindness!

In fact the poster was on the bathroom wall, yuck, right?? Scarred eyes!

I would recommend heeding this warning and not wearing cheap contacts under any circumstances.

Even the material from which they are made has potential to harm the cornea IMO.
