View Full Version : I Think I Experienced Inception Last Night (a dream within a dream)
Mike

actually, i'm almost certain I did.
to start: I had an *incredibly* deep sleep last night. in fact, I slept till almost 1:00 in the afternoon today (note: I don't think ive slept past 9:00am since I was in high school, so this is pretty significant)
I had several dreams last night, all very clear, like disparate plots in a scrambled book. and here's the kicker: I remember *all* of them. this is incredibly rare for me, as I almost never recall my dreams. bits n pieces, at best. (note: one of these dreams included our very own Bill Ryan, who was standing alongside myself and a few others as we witnessed a UFO pass just overhead in a large ball field I walk past nearly every day. I remember exactly what the UFO looked like too; it was very unconventional. we were all watching it quietly, and I said: "holy sh!t, that's a UFO!" it seemed I was the only excited member of our party. everyone else was quite calm;))
so I finally awoke (or at least I thought I did), observed it was 12:37, got out of bed and began getting dressed. it was crystal clear. I was even contemplating everything I had to do today, clearly and linearly. I cant stress this enough: it was every bit as clear as my "normal" reality. maybe even more so. I searched for my keys, found them, and was making my way out the door...when I *WOKE UP AGAIN.*
it was surreal, to say the least. and a little disorienting. I didn't know whether to "trust" the reality. I looked at the clock; it was 12:42...not too far off the first awakening. I've been pinching myself all day...still half-expecting to wake up again. it's been the strangest day of my life...
anyone out there experience something similar???

I'm far to inexperienced in the field of astral travel to speak with authority, but I'm certain that many people that set of on this path have at some point experiences quite like yours :)
Keep it up ! :thumb:

LOL! I had a Bill Ryan dream some months ago too, Chinaski.
It made less sense than yours.
In my dream I was in a casino, and I asked Bill what his favorite game was.
So as not to embarrass anyone (again) I won't say what he said,
but the essence of the comment was "gambling isn't my thing".
It was what I call a "sorting" dream -- we are looking for something important and going through a lot of weird emotional places in the mind.
Bill took on the role of spirit guide in my dream.
I know a guy named John who also played a very important role in one of my dreams (that came true) about gambling.
Also my psychotherapist appears very rarely in dreams and those one are always important, or near the date that I receive a so-called "prophetic dream".
Thanks to the kind souls who guide us all through those dark places...

Energy body events and Astral travel have opened up doorways for me too! The concept of being 'out of body' does not necessarily mean that you will experience that traditional 'phantom, floating free from the body' type of disassociate event. The 'dream within a dream' is VERY true on MANY (all?) non-physical levels. Even physicality will become another level of the dream. I am excited for you. Lots of fun stuff may occur, not just astral projection, in the traditional sense. Try and stay objective, but be willing to shed layers... :) I am currently doing some fun 'chi' experiments. Many astral-type voyages will become common, with just energy work, or energy body 'stimulation'... Good onya!!! Perhaps, I will find you when we wake up, no?? ;)

I have since childhood and still do from time to time.
This experience of yours sounds, in part, a like lucid dream. The fruits of energy work and meditation are numerous and exciting at first. A very important key is to move on, although there is this urge to repeat the exciting experience. Things will become clearer with further progress in energy work and as Bill puts it {turning the telescope inward}.

Interesting phenomena this. Usually the average Joe can experience up to 3 levels of consciousness.
This is not really astral travel as is classically, and often incorrectly understood...but rather a type of peeling off of layers of the 3 bodies we all have around us, in our closest, and most easily identifiable consciousness envelopes.
What happens is that first the physical body consciousness 'sleeps' and the emotional consciousness awakens...or becomes the primary consciousness. This emotional consciousness is what we tend to call the astral world consciousness...and it is in this state where classic 'astral travel' takes place.
In fact, in this state we are 'living' in a body, called the 'emotional body' and are quite whole and can operate quite normally.
Next, the emotional consciousness 'sleeps' and we enter into the consciousness of mind or the mental state. In this state we become almost unaware of a 'body'...as in the physical and emotional...and more aware of just being. It is a bit like a state where you have no senses except you are able to think and rationalise without the sensory feedback.
These 3 levels of consciousness...physical, emotional and mental are actually quite separate but we are so convinced of their integration during normal physical consciousness that we don't easily notice the separation. Some of us, as an example, are quite inclined to day dream, either in the emotional world or the mental world, depending on our focus. When we day dream we are using one or another or both of these 'higher' levels of consciousness.
Of course this has the effect at times of been lucid and consciously aware of the waking of the bodies as we return from the higher consciousness back to our physical consciousness.
I have described this in a rather simple way to get the idea across and usually, what we 'bring back' into our physical consciousness, is a kind of mental and or emotional concept of the process of an inner journey, which is just our physical brain trying to make sense of a process which is not as simple as it may seem.
Take care

Chinaski, you funny. Needless to say welcome to the club.
This with remembering dreams, it will happen more and more. Have for yourself a dream diary, you can see more clear connections behind events and other-worldly logic at some point after years.
Have you read PK Man? If not than you are picking up this UFO shape from Bill probably. Just to mention, when you dream of UFO it is possible that ... your dreams may seam as a dream only to your awake self.
Do also reality check regularly. That is how you can remember more dreams and make sure you know what is the difference between dreams and your reality, if that is a sensible thing to do. I wouldn't bother much since dream world is far more interesting.
Last thing, careful with the astral travel. There are some not so safe others there, especially ifyou are not experienced. Ask your higher self for guidance and protection, if you believe in that concept.

When I started to do exercises to learn to get OBE, the first thing that happened was that my dreams became more vivid and also that I was suddenly able to remember dreams more clearly, sometimes 2 or 3 dreams whole even.
Then after some time more and more dreams began to become lucid as in, waking up in the dream and become conscious. I had some flight exercises in the etheric planes (you know, the copy worlds of this physical plane, but much less dense) which was much fun.
Also I had some lucid dreams in the emotional planes which where of a much more murky nature, where the setting is more thought responsive and events have a nature to correspond to our emotional subconscious part of existence.
Till today I have never been able to consciously induce a full OBE where I completely separate from the physical body, but I keep trying and I'm not in a hurry to get there, since the voyage alone is bringing me much already as to more clarity, higher vibrations etc.
For the last months, I haven't been able to practice much, but a lot of dreams that I have seem to steer me to wake up in the dream.
Lots of dreams where I suddenly find myself in a situation that triggers me to remember that it is possible to fly in the dream, stuff like that. Maybe my higher self is trying to let me know that I should get on with it?
it's so nice to see more and more people set out to explore astral travel.
Nice to hear about your ongoings Chinaski :)

Hi,
I definitely have some strange dreams, including ones like that where I'm sure I woke up, got up and went to the loo, then I wake up straight away with a full bladder. It does feel odd. Some of my worst *nightmares* have been when i thought I was awake but may have been asleep. I've also astral travelled, and had some awful awakenings to something nasty and heavy sitting on my chest. I've also had dreams where I've woken up terrified and had clear memories of some kind of alien experiences and being investigated on...but i do wonder whether this started after i read Whitley Streiber's books Communion which could have influenced me....they certainly terrified me beyond belief. I do have a very vivid imagination - always have. As a child I was quite aware, and remember seeing a couple of 'ghosts', one which i thought was my mum in a nightie, but it wasn't. I was only about 4 and very scared, but I fell asleep again straight away.
Anyway, this is my first post on here and sorry it's rather garbled! There's more I could say but don't really know how/where to start. I've been doing a lot of reading on here in my spare time over the past few days and really do feel like I'm with like-minded people...which is rare for me!
Thanks

The weirdest dream(re Inception the movie) was when I one time woke up, not remembering who I was nor who are the people around me. My feeling was that I had been gone for years for retraining or vacation or something.
Very refreshing it was and odd, trying to figure out who I am. Reminescent of the concept in Inception about going deeper into dreams and the time spent grows exponentially.

Hello Chinaski!
Very cool! I am new here. I really enjoyed reading about your dream, very interesting. I used to believe that my waking life is a dream and sleep was more like waking up. When I was in late grade school I read a book about Lucid dreaming, and how to achieve the 'state' following various steps. I could not believe how quickly and easily it worked for me. I totally controlled everything that took place during my dreams for awhile. It was fantastic! I have experienced what you described in your post a few times, and it always seems to happen just before I actually do wake up (after thinking I already have).

In the past few days/week i have been dreaming many different chapters myself and remembering most of them as well. I find this highly strange and odd for me in waking up and remembering most of these chapters. I seldom remember any of my dreams at all when i awake. And now i have a collection of chapters that i remembered. And Like Reilly said in the above post "the real kicker is....you're still dreaming".... Very true statement.

I got stuck in the 'dream within a dream' several times. Once it was nightmarish. The overall feeling that physicality is just another level of the dream does not really leave me much anymore. It takes some getting used to. I love what Ray said,,,

based on the book ive been reading ('Astral Dynamics') i'm beginning to think what i experienced was what the author calls "the real time double". (as opposed to the energy body, astral body, etc...) i say this because of something you mentioned above - there was no floating, walking thru walls, or any disassociative events. it was pretty basic, only crystal clear; i felt hyper-aware.
i'm going to strive to only use the book as a guideline, and not get too caught up in the labelling and semantics. i want to define my own experiences. it is, however, a great starting point, a great point of relativity. as you say, there are so many layers and nuances here, it is easy to get lost.
i'll keep my eyes open for ya bud! would love to see you out "there"!:)

i do have a little notebook next to my bed, but the allure of sleep is so great, isnt it? it is the ultimate seductress;). ive been doing my best to at least scribble a sentence or 2, or something that will help remind me of the thing.
reality check? perhaps i need one of DiCaprio's "totems" from the movie 'Inception'.
and thanks for the warning. i'm quite ignorant about this stuff, and wrecklessly adventurous, but i'm smart enough to know i'm ignorant and wrecklessly adventurous. definitely will ask for higher self guidance...

hi Eram,
yes, consciously inducing the OBE is extremely difficut, and the reason for this (from what i understand) has to do mainly with the "split mind effect".
in a nutshell, there's quite an art to recalling dual experiences (that of your physical body and that of your double) and then reconciling the 2 into a coherent whole. in other words: if you don't recall it, it didn't happen.
there is an extensive section on this in the book 'Astral Dynamics'. so extensive, in fact, that i could hardly include it all here. i strongly recommend the book!

It seems that this happens with a number of people, they brush off experiences they barely remember for a while, have a clear one, then uncover a string of them afterwards.
This process to me seems to be preparation for more work ahead, I wish you well on your voyage.

My goodness. What a coincidence!!! (coincidence,, hehe :p) Robert Bruce is a friend of mine. Astral Dynamics is by far the most important OBE book that I have ever read. It explains many of the esoteric truths, in very pragmatic, or Western terms. He is actually Australian. I participated in the P.A.P.I. course that he offers. He is more than willing to answer questions and help you with questions,,, etc... Tell him Jake says hello!!! Astral Dynamics is my bible,,,, (small 'b') I refer to it often. When Robert says 'real time double', his emphasis is on the 'real time' aspect vs the 'body/double' aspect. The traditional OBE,, (where you are out of your body, still in the realms of the physical,,,) Robert calls the RTZ, Real Time Zone. It is an astral 'real time mimic' of physical 'real time' reality. There is a specific quality of consciousness that will be referred to as 'real time', based on the fact that you are experiencing it the same that you are experiencing real life,,, albeit enhanced/amplified. The 'real time' perspective is not always present,,, ie, you may not remember it, by waking state standards,,, but you will remember it once you are back in that state... Many of the 'astral proper' experiences,,, are experienced WITHOUT the limits/filters that we require when we are awake... Damn it ,,, I wish I had the right words,,, Ray,, Help out here!!! :) What would RAM say???
For every fully conscious OBE that I have,, I have 12 - 15 profound astral dreaming experiences... Time to start keeping a journal, my friend. So many implications,,,, I want to know what the UFO looked like,,, 'jake whispers' (they are definitely not all saucer shaped,,,) There is a reason that I am asking.... PM me,,, if need be!!! I am loving the parallels between our 'awakenings'....

hey Jake, regarding the UFO: it looked worn, like technology that seemed so fancy in the 70's might look today. I mean, it was a fascinating ship, but seemed oddly antiquated...or at the very least, beat up. have you seen the movie 'Elysium', with Matt Damon? my UFO had that sort of ironically rugged quality, despite being so advanced. it was elliptically shaped, with 2 I guess what you'd call "boosters" in back, hanging below the main structure....only I had the distinct impression that it wasn't rocket technology, but something much more advanced. Jake, if you can imagine a much, much smaller starship enterprise, then you'd be kinda close - only it wasn't circular; it was elliptical. thats the best I can do, I think. ive had dreams of these types of ships before, many times, engaged in warfare in what I think is planet earth, but I cannot be sure. in these dreams i'm usually on the ground...running and ducking and dodging, and just basically trying to stay alive.
you're too hard on yourself btw - your explanations are perfect, my friend!;)
youre pals with Bruce?!? that's awesome! the book has become my bible as well. I just got the thing and it looks 10 years old already, which is kind of a shame cuz it's such a visually pretty (and expensive!) thing.
like you, I expect to have more astral dreaming experiences that conscious OBE's. and the journal has begun Obi Wan - all young astral jedi's require one, right? ;)

The weirdest dream(re Inception the movie) was when I one time woke up, not remembering who I was nor who are the people around me. My feeling was that I had been gone for years for retraining or vacation or something.
Very refreshing it was and odd, trying to figure out who I am. Reminescent of the concept in Inception about going deeper into dreams and the time spent grows exponentially.

had you been drinking the night before? cuz cheap american beer can have that effect on people;)
seriously, that sounds amazing. i have had experiences where i've awoken into what felt like a new world, dimension, universe, whatever. i wonder whats occuring there?
No drinking 😃
When waking up I still had the faint memory of great lenght of time and activity - actually the experience was even more like the Gandalf-scene after fighting with Balrog. Odd to have to remember who you are, what you do and when is now?

I didn't know an actual term existed for a dream within a dream. I've had dreams in whuch I dreamed that I was dreaming. I've also had dreams when I drwam that I'm waking up, but seven or eight wake-ups latee, I realize I'm still asleep.
I also di some astral traveling in my dreams. It isn't consistent, but the people I've visited in the dreams have verified the events later.

Your Inception experience is truly fascinating.
I myself have had an Inception experience a few years ago, but in a different way: I actually realized that I was dreaming and became somewhat conscious in my dream.
In my dream, I was sitting in a living room with several other people I did not recognize. For some reason, I recognized that this was a dream (not a lucid dream) and looked around at everybody. It was quite the experience.
When I realized that I was aware that I was conscious in my dream, I told everybody in the room quite confidently "I'm dreaming right now. You all are not real but this experience seems so real."
As soon as I said that, everybody looked at my very coldly. At the same time. It was like they were about to subdue me because I wasn't supposed to be aware. I quickly woke up out of fear that they were going to attack me. It was reminiscent of the scene from Inception:

anyone out there experience something similar???
Thousands of times, In a thousand different ways, since I was a small child. Tip of the iceberg....
The more 'up the system' (think of the British saying 'up yours') one is, the more third person and overlay (inside of other) these 'experiences' become.
In your case, it may have been some players you know, in the astral realm, acting something out for you. Think of it as therapy.
The only thing that tends to take such things and spin them negative, is the fear emotions of the ego/body, spinning the thoughts on the experiences - into the negative.
Write your dreams down every time, right when you wake up.
This writing and recall, most seriously... does re-enforce the connection through the duality self, and begins the erasure of the duality conscious/unconscious/superconscious barrier.
When the dreams are written down... read them, now and again, enough so that you DO consciously remember the dreams. So that none of them are ever lost.
Pretty soon..things will go bat-sh!t crazy for you (if you commit to this given writing and recall act). in most cases..the psychic, metaphysical, visionary and dimensional aspects of life will intertwine with the mundane and things will get..really, seriously weird. Your head WILL get totally screwed up and you WILL be challenging yourself in the extreme. And your mind and body WILL beg you to stop. You will be re-wiring your brain and self, from inside yourself. The old will be torn down, and die a most wretched and flopping tortuous death, fighting all the way. It has to go, to make room for the new.
But...growth on all levels... will be the order of the day.
Finding the way 'in' is different for all people. A very personal act.

Heck Carmody, you most certainly don't oversell your idea(writing down the dreams).
In essence:"drink this my boy, it'll make you dyslexic, paranoid, a bit scitzhophrenic, insomniac and will ruin your day - increases bowel movements though.. You'll thank me in the end, my boy!"
I am absolutely not saying anything negative about it - you just nailed down what is common in those experiences in ones life that one would not wan't to change away - being really really crappy and miserable until looked back upon and seen as necessary and critical blessings of life.

Chinaski, it happened to me last night. I experienced "inception" in my dreams.
One dream involved fighting with my husband. I "woke up" and argued with him in yet another dream, telling him of the nightmares.
I also dreamed about traveling, far and wide over the landscape, by car. I was formulating what I would tell my dream analyst about it all.
Then I realized, when I woke up AGAIN, that I had forgotten what I would tell him -- because the planning took place in a dream.
Isn't that weird?
Not once, but twice, I was dreaming about analyzing a dream (in one night).
Thanks for this thread; people apparently never know when this can happen to them, and this thread helped me to remember it.

you're still dreaming....
