Theres a lot of speculation ,reports and planning for Mars Colonies in the near
future, this seems to come out of nowhere in the last few years. Not only by
NASA who have always been luke warm ,but several groups and consortiums.
Russia, China and now India are planning various missions to the red planet.
The Dutch are planning a Big Bros House, and there was an article encouraging
older people to apply for first, for possible one way trips in case they cannot come back.

The vid below is older and not what is advertised on the label, I thought it was
a different documentary about the current race to colonise Mars. A longer indeph
version of the one above,I was going to delete it , but maybe of interest.

More than 100,000 people are eager to make themselves at home on another planet.
They've applied for a one-way trip to Mars, hoping to be chosen to spend the rest of
their lives on uncharted territory, according to an organization planning the manned
missions.

The Mars One project wants to colonize the red planet, beginning in 2022. There are
financial and practical questions about this venture that haven't been clarified. Will
there be enough money? Will people really be able to survive on Mars? But these
haven't stopped some 30,000 Americans from signing up.

You can see some of the candidates on the project's website, but they're not the only
ones who have applied, said Bas Lansdorp, Mars One CEO and co-founder.
"There is also a very large number of people who are still working on their profile, so
either they have decided not to pay the application fee, or they are still making their
video or they're still filling out the questionnaire or their resume. So the people that you
can see online are only the ones that have finished and who have set their profiles as
public," Lansdorp said.
The entrepreneur did not specify how many have paid the fees, completed their profiles
and configured them as private.

whether there already are bases there or not this seems to be hotting up.

Bob Dean announced in Barcelona the existence of Bases on Mars,,,,

_ngvIP0Za9M

Bob Dean's presentation at the European Exopolitics Summit, Barcelona, 25 July
2009.In this historical presentation, Bob Dean is at his very finest - and shows a
number of previously suppressed NASA images which have impressed us at Project
Camelot.Bob concluded his delivery by stating that there are bases on Mars... and
then Henry Deacon (supported by Kerry Cassidy) went up to the stage to state
publicly, for the first time, that he had been on Mars. Enjoy...

It maybe NASA knows that bases are already there that they do not seem so
keen. Which explains why its only US probes that have successfully landed.

It will be interesting to see if they can keep these new pioneers away.

Horizon - Life on Mars - BBC
The intriguing possibility of life on Mars has fuelled man's quest to visit the Red
Planet. Drawing on 45 years of Horizon archive, space expert Dr Kevin Fong
presents a documentary on Earth's near neighbour.

Man's extraordinary attempts to reach Mars have pushed technological boundaries
past their limit and raised the tantalising prospect of establishing human colonies
beyond our own planet.

While the moon lies 240,000 miles away, Mars is at a distance of 50 million miles.
Reaching the moon takes three days, but to land on Mars would take nearly eight
months, and only two thirds of the missions to Mars have made it. The BBC has
been there to analyse the highs and lows - including the ill-fated British attempt,
the Beagle.

Horizon has explored how scientists believe the only way to truly understand Mars
is to send people there. If and when we do, it will be the most challenging trip
humanity has ever undertaken.

I'm not sure about Apollo , but I'd be surprised
if humans have not been up there.

When I hear about the overwhelming enthusiasm people have for wanting to escape Earth and colonize Mars, a whole range of emotions swell up inside of me. It seems that most people on this planet would rather trash Earth and escape all of the problems without trying to fix them. Leaving the planet is a quick fix for all the problems that they are partly responsible for. :tsk:

I commented in the thread Police Can't Handle Broadway FlashMob Bomb 2013 (NwoSatire) (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?65040-Police-Can-t-Handle-Broadway-FlashMob-Bomb-2013--NwoSatire-&p=752407&viewfull=1#post752407) that people are more willing to band together in large skateboarding conventions, heavy metal concerts, and other recreational (and somewhat hazardous) events but will not even consider joining a political rally to help save the planet.

We live on a convoluted planet and fragmented society, my friends. :twitch:

This... aside from potentially/ likely being deceived, isn't there a problem with the "publicly" understood way (via rocket ship) of physically traveling beyond earth due to the negative effects on the human body caused by the van allen belts?

Huge numbers of people on Earth are keen to leave the planet forever and seek a new life homesteading on Mars.

About 78,000 people have applied to become Red Planet colonists with the nonprofit organization Mars One since its application process opened on April 22, officials announced today (May 7). Mars One aims to land four people on the Red Planet in 2023 as the vanguard of a permanent colony, with more astronauts arriving every two years thereafter.

"With 78,000 applications in two weeks, this is turning out to be the most desired job in history," Mars One CEO and co-founder Bas Lansdorp said in a statement. "These numbers put us right on track for our goal of half a million applicants."

Mars One estimates that landing four settlers on Mars in 2023 will cost about $6 billion. The Netherlands-based organization plans to pay most of the bills by staging a global reality-TV event, with cameras documenting all phases of the mission from astronaut selection to the colonists' first years on the Red Planet.

The application process extends until Aug. 31. Anyone at least 18 years of age can apply, by submitting to the Mars One website a 1-minute video explaining his or her motivation to become a Red Planet settler. (You can also watch other applicants' videos at the site.)

Mars One charges an application fee, which ranges from $5 to $75 depending on the wealth of the applicant's home country. United States citizens pay $38, Lansdorp said.

When the application process closes, reviewers will pick 50 to 100 candidates from each of the 300 regions around the world that Mars One has identified. By 2015, this pool will be whittled down to a total of 28 to 40 candidates, officials said.

This core group will be split into groups of four, which will train for their one-way Mars mission for about seven years. Finally, an audience vote will pick one of these groups to be humanity's first visitors to the Red Planet.

So far, Mars One has received applications from more than 120 countries, officials said. The United States leads the way with 17,324, followed by China (10,241) and the United Kingdom (3,581). Russia, Mexico, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Argentina and India round out the top 10.

"Mars One is a mission representing all humanity, and its true spirit will be justified only if people from the entire world are represented," Lansdorp said. "I'm proud that this is exactly what we see happening."

Here's an article (update) on the project:

Mission to colonise Mars: 'Columbus didn't wait; nor should we'

In 2022 four astronauts, picked from tens of thousands of applicants, will jet off on a one-way mission to Mars as part of the world's most expensive reality TV show. Meet some of the applicants hoping to make history
Tuesday 10 September 2013

The £4bn project, founded in 2010 by engineer Bas Lansdorp, is set to recoup its costs by selling the broadcasting rights to the mission.

"The biggest media event in the world," said Paul Römer, the co-creator of Big Brother and ambassador of the project, on the Mars One website. "Reality meets talent show with no ending and the whole world watching. Now there's a good pitch."

But the mission has been met by more than its fair share of sceptics. Funding issues, technological hurdles as well as the psychological challenges the astronauts will come up against have all come under scrutiny.

As 22-year-old hopeful Thomas Eccles points out, "can you imagine how deranged and unstable I would eventually become? That would make for some impressive TV gold. But having 'been to Mars' on your CV has got to be pretty impressive, right?"

But a return to Earth to update CVs is far from guaranteed. Changes in bone density and circulation caused by Mars's gravity as well as the technical challenges involved in re-entering the Earth's atmosphere make a return seem unlikely. If there's a problem, a call for help could take up to 22 minutes to arrive at Earth, depending on the position of the two planets, and even then the fastest rocket would not arrive until six months later.

By 2015, 40 candidates will start their eight-year training programme where they will learn, amongst other essential skills, to deal with long periods of isolation.

Here, some of the hopefuls explain why they're prepared to leave friends and loved ones behind for the chance to establish life on Mars....
