Senior House lawmakers sounded the alarm over what they say is the U.S. military’s lack of preparedness for battle following a classified briefing Thursday on how deepening budget cuts are impacting troop readiness.
Continuing cuts to the nation’s defense budget have left U.S. troops underprepared for battle, according to House Armed Services Committee Chair Howard “Buck” McKeon (R., Calif.) and Readiness Subcommittee Chairman Rob Wittman (R., Va.), who briefed reporters following a classified briefing with top military brass.
The briefing—one in a series that will be held over the next weeks—was aimed at convincing members of Congress to fight against further defense cuts as next year’s federal budgeting process gets underway.
The brief was led by Brigadier General Martin Schweitzer and Dr. Laura Junor, a deputy assistant secretary of defense for readiness.
Military leaders from all branches of the service have increasingly spoken out in recent months about how the budget crisis is impacting readiness and their ability to carry out missions.
The goal of these briefings is “to make sure that members not on the House Armed Services Committee understand what we’re facing in the nation, what we have to decide upon,” and what “it means if there’s not proper resources,” Wittman told a small group of reporters after the briefing.
As billions of dollars are slashed from the defense budget under an agreement known as sequestration, the military is finding itself unable to train troops and retain key personnel.
“One of the things that really concerns me, all of these cuts we’re having, the first thing that gets hit is readiness,” said McKeon. “So the troops that are preparing for Afghanistan, remember we are still at war, are not getting the training they got a year ago.”
“And I’ve been to a lot of the bases and the training they really focus on is IEDs,” or improvised explosive devises, McKeon added. “That’s where we lose most of our lives, limbs over there. If they are cut short on some of that training it puts them more at risk.
Lawmakers have a duty to ensure that the troops are ready to deploy at a moment’s notice.
“Reality tells us that our forces will be unprepared to deploy, they will face increased risk, their safety will be jeopardized, their missions compromised, and there will be an increased likelihood that more Americans will be killed carrying out their constitutional duty, both on the battle field and in training if cuts to our national security are allowed to continue,” Wittman said in an additional statement issued after the briefing.
“Readiness was already in decline before sequestration,” he said. “It is critical that members responsible under the Constitution to provide for our common defense, understand what these cuts mean to our neighbors’ sons and daughters who are sacrificing their all to serve our nation.”
Many lawmakers do not grasp the intricacies of the U.S. defense budget, making the classified briefing all the more critical, according to McKeon and Wittman.
“We need to have enough money and we’ve cut so much it’s gone past enough,” McKeon said. “One of the things that Rob is trying to do with this is educate other members of our conference.”
Wittman is also pushing top House lawmakers such as Speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio) and GOP budget guru Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) to take part in the briefings.
“We’re going to follow up and do more of this,” McKeon said. “We would like to get leadership to understand the same things. While they have people in the meetings it’s not the same as getting them yourself.”

This is excellent news. I hope that the USA sees the merit in taking a hold on military spending abroad and concentrates its funding on matters on their own soil.
There are many things that need addressing in the USA and other countries like it such as the UK and European Countries in general.
The fear that retaliation may occour if America does not keep up its guard is a deserved back lash that is inevitable. What did you think was going to happen America ? When your military terrorises the globe to strong arm resources and land while displacing indigenous cultures and families...
Id say cut military spending to virtually Zero over seas and take an interest in your own people who are un employed and suffering every day in your own country. Invest this money in your own infrastructure , manufacturing , farming and a proper health care system.
And for the good military that are out there that may read this. Stand your post but make your voice clear. We need you in there because of the good soldiers leave an obvious broken machine their places will be taken by the unscroupulous collectivists with a scarcity mentality and a need for retribution of deeper evils.
America you need to shut your country down and reform it by force. anything elce dosent seem to be working.

I don't know a lot about the US military. I think like many I have just considered our security a fact of life. Actually two of my children work for the DOD. I have a nephew who fought In desert Storm. And a. Nephew is currently deployed in Afghanistan. However, I do believe in the remark made by President Theodore Roosevelt. "Speak softly, and carry a big stick." Self explanatory, I think. We are whittling down our Big Stick. Peace and love and understanding is a wonderful goal. But how can good hope to prevail if the good become mats for the feet of the wicked. And just an extra, my dad is a WWII vet. He very rarely tells a story, but when he does, they are humorous and anecdotal. Have not heard him ever repeat any of the horrific things he witnessed. He was in
Germany, England, Belgium, France, and Italy . I do know it was not fun and games. Life would certainly be different if the Allies had not prevailed.

This is excellent news. I hope that the USA sees the merit in taking a hold on military spending abroad and concentrates its funding on matters on their own soil.
I think most people are overlooking the reason for lack of funding and preparedness for US troops.
The reason for this is simple and nefarious:
The United States is pouring most of its defense budget into the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Instead of spending money on their troops, they are arming the Police. They are militarizing the police.
The PTB are not worried about foreign enemies at this point in time. They are focusing all of their effort into arming their Police Force to control and fight their real enemy: the Domestic US citizens.
The PTB are very very afraid of US citizens. The United States Constitution is being ripped up before our very eyes with every day passing, and the DHS is ensuring that its citizens will not be able to revolt.
So once more, there is a decrease in the amount of US troops and supplies for foreign affairs because the United States is focusing its effort and supplies on domestic issues. Hello Orwellian Police State!

I understand your frustration, CL, but try not to be offended by Nanoo Nanoo's comments.
He makes some very good points. The United States is like a school bully. Sooner or later every school bully will get what is coming for him as the smaller kids realize that they have the power of numbers.
As an American citizen, I take no offense to bashing the US. None whatsoever. They have deviated so far from what was created in 1776 and have become a rogue nation. I agree that the US needs to be taught a lesson.
Another analogy: the US is kind of like a drunken and careless friend. Because of its careless regard for other people both domestic and foreign, the US seriously needs an intervention. This intervention can be as simple as other nations knocking on its door, sitting down, and hashing out plans for sobriety.
This has been happening for a while, but careless US will not listen. When all else fails, force must ensue. I hope that it does not come to this, but the US is a drunken, careless entity. I fear that the US government will not go out with a fight. But they are clever and will resist all peaceful reconciliations.
They will not go out with a fight.

The US is her people.. The duly elected officials get in office and then do what they darn well please. So lets advocate kicking the beans out of the civilian population in the name of teaching the US a lesson. A civil war here. How is that any different than else are in the world. But no one will help US citizens because in some sick way you think we deserve it. BS. It is all BS . You think we are bullies. Without us the world will truly learn what a bully is. And the new bullies will be many times worse than you can imagine. Peace and love will not win on the earth. Not while there are two humans standing. If brothers fight within their homes, and neighbors fight on their streets, and people argue within the city halls and so on. And within this small group of people you call destruction to the people of the US. This will become a more violent world than that which you see now. It will not suddenly become a magical place because you have beat down America. Personally I wish we had become isolationists years ago. Not to beat our own up. But to keep all the hate mongers from getting in. I am disgusted.

I'm having some trouble deciphering your prose, Christine, so I am not quite sure how to separate sarcasm, blame, and agreement in your comment. It helps to organize thought into concise paragraphs of no more than 2-3 sentences.
I agree that Isolationism is an agreeable philosophy. The American Founders wanted the US to hold to Isolationism and not meddle in the affairs of other nations that have nothing to do with our philosophies. They would clearly be disappointing if they were to see their beloved, darling experiment as corrupt as it is now.
I am not advocating "kicking the beans" out of the US at all. I think that peaceful solutions should always be sought. What I was trying to say was that the if the US keeps on taunting other nations as they have been, then other nations will refuse to sit back and absorb US blows without retaliation.
No other nation is going to step in and save the US. It is up to her people to wake up and take back their inalienable rights that have been taken from them. It is up to the US military to refuse orders. It is up to the US police force to refuse orders. It is up to the average US citizen to wake up and demand change and accept our reality. We put these knuckleheads in office, so it is up to us to admit that we've been duped so we can clean house.
I find your comment "Without us the world will truly learn what a bully is" to be interesting. The United States is not a Peace Keeper, as American citizens have been led to believe. American citizens are fed propaganda to make them think that they live in the best nation in the world. As Putin has warned American citizens, it is dangerous to label yourself as "exceptional."
If the United States is removed from world-affairs, I sincerely think that the world would be one step closer to peace. Not only does the United States have a foothold in other countries, but other countries are purposely manipulated by the US for its own agendas. The wars in the Middle East were created by the United States, managed by the United States, and continue to be that way. The US is a huge bully.
I am not a hate-mongerer. I am a US citizen who is extremely passionate about what my country used to be. As it was when it was created. I will continue to bash the United States because the US warrants criticism. I only do so out of love for my Constitution and love for all people of planet Earth. I feel responsible as a US citizen to take partial blame for my country's horrible atrocities and to reform it so it is no longer a world-wide problem. :o

Presently, and speaking just for myself, I find myself in substantial agreement with what Nanoo Nanoo and SamwiseTheBrave have posted here.
But I can still read you have posted here, Christine Lizzi, with a sympathetic ear, as not long ago I held views that may be more similar to the ones you post here. I served honorably in the US military, got my education on the GI bill, had a US flag sticker on my car, respected and trusted our Presidents, and was most grateful that the US mlitary was over there, in the Middle East, dealing with the murderous Islamic terrorists who attacked us on 9/11.
My views have changed :).
I do not read what Nanoo Nanoo or SamwiseTheBrave post here as attacking Americans. Rather they would encourage Americans to wake up and take back their once fine nation from the very dark forces who have taken control of America.
Even if I still disagreed with that view, I doubt I would find grounds to recommend "Moderation Team" action here, as from what I can tell, all members here are speaking respectfully toward each other, despite dissenting views on important subjects.

It is your problem because they represent you indirectly. at least from a worlds perspective it does. So i offer that point of view from the outside. There is already a lot of prejudice growing as a reaction to Americans in general. And it seems when you offer some constructive criticism you get upset and want to sweep it under the carpet , just like your governments are doing. SO i suggest to face the music once and for all and swallow that bitter pill for the sake of your own people and reform your international relations.

I think that Kristo is being somewhat playful by alluding to the idea that arguments often separate individuals who have no reason to separate. ;)
In the case of attacking the credibility of a nation, Americans often get very upset at one another. Instead of resolving the issue at hand, Americans add more fuel to the fire, so to speak.
To me satire is a wonderful thing indeed. I think that it is healthy to laugh at ourselves once in a while and likewise laugh at the misgivings of nations at a whole.
On the forum you will see not only Americans, but everybody mock their government. Those under the rule of the British Crown do not hesitate to call poppycock on their government's tyrannical deeds. It's all in healthy, friendly, and intelligent fun.

You guys, this all really does seem to be adding up. Note at the bottom of this comment I highlighted that these sequestrations are active from 2014-2017. This gives me yet more confirmation that the years 2012-2017 have great significance for humanity, and the US government knows this.
I really do think that we are in the midst of a global frequency shift, and the PTB are going to do everything they can to stop us from awakening, including waging war on a Domestic level.
U.S. War Readiness In Jeopardy As Pilots Flee (http://www.wnd.com/2013/11/u-s-war-readiness-in-jeopardy-as-air-force-pilots-flee/)
"WASHINGTON – As if to dramatically illustrate repeated claims top generals have made to WND of a purge of senior officers and a degradation of military readiness under President Obama’s leadership, stunning testimony at a recent Senate committee hearing shows America may soon be unable to fight and win a war."
"The Air Force is having problems retaining its pilots, even though they are being offered big bonuses to remain, senators learned at the Nov. 7 Senate Armed Services Committee hearing."
"The problem appears to be partly from sequestration, which has imposed budget limitations on pilots’ ability to get in both the requisite flying time and the training needed to fly the next generation of aircraft, according to Air Force Secretary Eric Fanning."
"Sequestration cuts aren’t limited to the Air Force."
"The Army is shrinking the number of troops to 380,000. Gen. Raymond Odierno, Army chief of staff, in the same Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, expressed particular concern that force reductions have greatly affected its readiness capability between 2014-2017."

The press releases only deals with man power issues like corporations laying off workers while they keep their corporate jets and other executive perks.
This is just a scam to scare Congress.
• Has the military cancelled any of their latest ships and aircraft they order from their corporate suppliers?
• Have they shut down any of their bases all over the world? After all the drones are launched from the desert Southwest.
• What about their cyberwar toys - do we really need defensive and offensive ones? Billions of dollars are tied up in this which doesn't require overseas bases
Cyberwars are the wave of the future so why so much unwillingness to slim down conventional warfare apparatus:
"The aggressive nature of what has since evolved into CYBERCOM is underscored by several planning documents released by the U.S. Air Force. In a 2006 presentation to the Air Force Cyber Task Force, A Warfighting Domain: Cyberspace, Dr. Lani Kass unabashedly asserts: “Cyber is a war-fighting domain. The electromagnetic spectrum is the maneuver space. Cyber is the United States’ Center of Gravity–the hub of all power and movement, upon which everything else depends. It is the Nation’s neural network.” Kass averred that “Cyber superiority is the prerequisite to effective operations across all strategic and operational domains–securing freedom from attack and freedom to attack.” http://www.globalresearch.ca/cyberwar-the-internet-and-the-militarization-of-civil-society
Congress and U. S. citizens are just being bamboozled because of military internal turf wars to hold on to nonessential stuff that benefits specific generals.
