View Full Version : First 3D-printed metal gun unveiled ......Inevitable I suppose !!

It says in the report that if criminals can afford a 3 D printer they can already afford
a gun. This misses out that technology usually becomes cheaper and by definition
to create your own gun bypasses a lot of regulation, even if the illegal gun market
is easy to access. Which it is not in the UK for most people, whether they wanted
one for selfe defence or a more covert activity.Although access to ammo and a magazine
would still be a problem here. Not that I wish to own a gun.

First 3D-printed metal gun unveiled

Engineers at a custom manufacturing company in Texas have created world's first high-
powered, fully functioning metal handgun... from a 3D printer. The team at Solid
Concepts announced this week that that they've successfully designed, printed,
assembled and (accurately) fired a 1911 pistol created using digital blueprints that were
fed through an industrial 3D printer loaded with powdered metals. In this week's Tech
Report, RT's Meghan Lopez talks with Kent Firestone, vice president of additive
manufacturing at Solid Concepts, about 3D printing and if it could revolutionize the
Second Amendment as we know it.

This is the world's first 3D-printed metal gun which has fired more than 50 rounds
successfully. An exact copy of a 1911 semi-automatic gun has been made using 3D-
printing techniques. The gun, created by Solid Concepts, was printed using public
domain plans, and then coated in metal using a laser sintering system that solidifies
metal powderThe finished product needed to have the support material removed, and
slight modifications to the chamber.

Solid Concepts laser sintered the nylon grips but used off-the-shelf springs and a shop-
bought magazine.

“We made it to prove out metal laser sintering technology,” said VP of Marketing Scott
McGowan.

“It’s not done with hobbyist printers. It’s not something you’re going to find in someone’s garage.”

McGowan expects to be able to help gunsmiths acquire difficult-to-build parts using this
technology.

The printers cost over $500,000 and McGowan noted that they
are “professional engineers working with professional machines for professional clients.”

With the arm trade as it is, there are probably easier ways of obtaining fire arms, and cheaper as well.

So you decided to make a gun? Stupid boffins. Way to go. Of all the metal objects to test your new toy with. Why didn't you choose to make an ice-cream scoop or something...

Come On they are in Texas...LOL ....Home of my gun is bigger than yours !!

I can remember Alex talking about his gun collection.....

Alex Jones Has a Really Big Gun

Here, in an outtake from our photo shoot with him, he's holding a gun, specifically
a semi-automatic .50-caliber Barrett M107A1 with a 29-inch barrel and mounted
with a NightForce scope. It has a quick-detach bipod with modular feet so he
doesn't have to hold it with two hands like he does here. It's even got a thermal
cheek guard, because, well, who doesn't need one? "Shipping on the rifle is $55.00."

At the moment, there are plenty of surplus weapons floating about, but this is a whole
new market for the future. As I said above I have no idea even if I wanted, how
to get hold of one, If I lived in a larger Town or city it may be different.

you miss it , the real story is workers are no longer needed ... job killer ... no need for a huge overhead , the public can just make it at home ... it could put gun manufacturing out of business , ehummm gun control , we don't need to , people can just print one , you have your second amendment but , you will need a 20,000 dollar printer , oh well I guess only the wealthy will have firearms ... the arm of skynet just got longer , drones , robots , and now the means to make weapons by computer printers and programs , anyone seen terminator ??? ehummmmm or elysium ... science fiction right ??? that could never happen right ??? I mean weapons in the sky , the public being watched by computers/cameras , satelites linked to drones etc ... thats all just science fiction right ??? I aint gonna fib , this scares the crap out of me ...

When 3D printers emerged, the thing that came to my mind was printable skyscrapers -- beautiful glass-like structures pre-built with space for technological modification and gardening.

And these people are printing guns :(
I guess the corporations want exclusive rights to "dangerous technologies" in order to make money.

Now, if only the corporations discovered what sort of technology was used to *dismantle* three buildings in New York City... then they'd make (or unmake) some real money.

I went to their website - they are a prototype manufacturing company. It appears they get prototypes to people who need them.

They said they made the gun from public domain documents, on the internet I guess.

It appears that they printed up the 1911 3D Printed Metal Gun to prove that their metal printing technology would not only capture attention to their skills in 3D metal manufacturing technology, it also now proves that their manufacturing process can make parts that withstand extreme pressure torture. (In the gun, they succesfully fired 600+ rounds without any part failures, in a chamber which exceeds chamber pressures above 20,000 psi every time it is fired.)

To be able to manufacture a part, rapidly in an exotic metal with extreme precision is no small feat. To do anything in manufacturing with exotic metal is amazing.

To manufacture an ice-cream scoop as a capability demonstration it seems to me is hilarious, as that does not demonstrate "extreme manufacturing capability", which the company was attempting to call notice to I believe. And no doubt they succeeded. They do mention they do have a LEGAL manufacturing firearms license and were quite legal in their production demonstration.

I notice also, that they do more than manufacture 3D guns, as that was a proof of their capabilities..

They make parts for people who need items FAST from design to product.

I personally have seen metal parts manufactured in a 3D laser sintering machine using exotic metals, with configurations which are technically impossible to manufacture by any other method.

3D Laser sintering is a mind-blowing technology innovation that is needed. It is more cost effective than making tooling for instance for injection molding the old way on a CNC machine.

These are the guys who can manufacture 3D artificial heart pumps, artificial kidneys, synthetic Tracheas for dealing with crushed throats, or damage from cancers.

ref - here is the website: Its worth the look if anyone wants the scoop on 3D manufacturing and cutting edge technology for prototype production..
