Astronomer Carl Sagan in His Last Interview Makes Dire Warning | VIDEO
http://youtu.be/_iyFw8UF85A (2,34 min)
Rajiv Narayan alerts us to the dire warning that famed astronomer Carl Sagan made in his last interview done with none other then the incomparable Charlie Rose.
Sagan died (17 years ago) of pneumonia at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. He had been battling a bone-marrow disease called myelodysplasia for the previous two years.
In listening to the pertinent snippet, I couldn’t help but recall another ominous warning issued by then President Dwight Eisenhower in his farewell address (1961). In that now renowned speech Eisenhower warned of increasing power of the military-industrial complex and further stated:
“. . . we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.
We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.”
Like Eisenhower, Sagan offered a similar warning in saying:
“. . . this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces . . . science is more then a body of knowledge it's a way of thinking . . . if we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we're up for grabs, for the next charlatan, political or religious who comes ambling along. It's a thing that Jefferson lay great stress on; there wasn't enough he said, to enshrine some rights in a constitution or a bill of rights; the people had to be educated and they had to practice their skepticism and their education, otherwise we don't run the government, the government runs us.”

I personally think that Carl Sagan was a high-ranking member of Majestic 12...which would explain a lot. I also suspect Michio Kaku is deep in the greater scheme of things.

I would think that Carl Sagan knew somethings about something. I also believe that he was a friend of the late Astronaut/energy researcher Brian O'Leary.

I hope none of this distracts from the original purpose of your opening post Camilo. Sagan was an accomplished man who said a great many intelligent things. And I very much agree with the wisdom you quoted, that people should “practice their skepticism and their education, otherwise we don't run the government, the government runs us.”
Brian O’Leary spoke about his relationship with Sagan in his Project Camelot interview, here: http://youtu.be/c3cBOq5-nZw?t=22m41s
This is taken from Camelot’s transcript of that interview:
“KC: But isn’t there a time in which you and Carl Sagan sort of had a falling-out, or a distancing? Can you describe what happened there?
BO’L: Yes. Well, for one thing, Carl was very angry I left Cornell when I did. It was… One very cold snowy day in May, I landed in Syracuse, and there was a horizontal blizzard -- in May -- and I said: That’s it for upstate New York. And Carl thought that was very frivolous. Because, of course, he was kind of an empire-builder kind of guy; and he also had a huge ego.
It was only later, when I began to embrace the UFO phenomenon and the cover-up, studying all these organizations that were covering up, and having some direct experience, myself, as a researcher no longer beholden to funding from NASA or the university environment, that I began to double-check some of Carl’s work.
I saw, for example, the famous “Face” in Cydonia on Mars, photographed by Viking in 1975, which shows this gigantic mesa that resembles a human face, about a mile across. Carl and I debated this.
It was very, very disappointing to me, because not only was Carl wrong, he also fudged data. He published a picture of the “Face” in Parade Magazine, a popular article, saying that the “Face” was just a natural formation, but he doctored the picture to make it not look like a face.
I began to realize, just directly from the scientific point of view, not only hearsay, that this man was colluding with NASA, that there might be more to this than before. And then, when I started studying things like MJ12 and other organizations that were covering up the UFO phenomenon…
Carl was on a committee with a number of notable people. There was a report issued by the Brookings Institution in 1961 -- and that’s about when I knew Carl, during those years; the ’60s mostly was when I worked closely with him -- that he and this other group said: Well, if any ETs ever showed up on the Earth, it has to be covered up. That’s the only way we’re going to be able to manage this, because if we can’t, then it would be too much of a culture shock.
So their recommendation to the government in 1961 was to cover up the UFO phenomenon, and I think in a way that provided a justification for the ongoing cover-up way back in ’61 -- was to keep things secret. And of course they still are.”

Carl Sagan also spoke about UFOs and the late John Mack in his Charlie Rose interview. At 10 minutes 48 seconds in, here : http://youtu.be/U8HEwO-2L4w?t=10m45s
John E Mack M.D. - who’d been a professor of Psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School - was someone who spoke very sincerely on the subject of phenomena less acknowledged by mainstream science, including UFOs and other dimensions. Such as at 1 hour 8 minutes and 25 seconds in here : http://youtu.be/KMvSoK25vAs?t=1h8m25s (As an aside I found the whole video engaging; it includes Jeffrey Mishlove interviews with Jacques Vallee, Terrence McKenna and John Mack, and then a separate discussion with John Mack and Budd Hopkins before an audience that includes people who have experienced phenomena.)
John Mack, Brian O’Leary and Carl Sagan have all passed on. I wish them a wealth of peace, love and greater wisdom where they are.

One thing that Carl Sagan did advocate that I totally agree with is that a misunderstanding of science is the downfall of any civilization. I am a scientist because to me it has been the only logical field to go into--besides the humanities--because every other "job" or "career" is man-made. Nothing is more important than having a better understanding of nature and our place in it, and to reduce the suffering of humans and other organisms on this planet. I always knew that I wanted to be a biologist..
I think that every human being should be a scientist to some capacity. We do not have to be academics to appreciate and understand science. Simply opening up a science book in one's free time and collecting grasshopper species in your backyard is also scientific research. I look around and see the majority of the human population of this planet lock themselves deep into concrete jungles to work in offices all day working for a business that sponsors materialism.
No, no, no...this sytem is all wrong. As soon as people stop studying science and place their trust in scientists to give them accurate information, then there is a downfall of civilization. We've seen it time and time again throughout history, that a misunderstanding and misuse of scientific discovery has led to problems within society.
We all need to be scientists and humanitarians to some capacity.
