This is interesting and is another piece of evidence that manipulation and
agendas are given priority to truth. In the past these things were not questioned
what the intel agencies and government said was true and generally believed.
Even though history is full of lies and propaganda. We just thought we were
past it , but with 9/11, 7/7, Iraq, Afghanistan and all the other events of the last
60 years, we now know we are still being used.

I know, we know this on here , but I've noticed in the last few months a change
in some of the mainstream reporting after Snowden, whether they keep it up
we will have to see.

From what I've read of the bombing, it would have taken someone with intimate knowledge of the attributes of the aircraft to plan the Lockerbie Bombing.
The explosive was placed in such a way that a Mach Front destroyed the aircraft more surely than the bomb did.

Pan Am Flight 103 (also known as the Lockerbie bombing) was a Pan Am transatlantic flight from London Heathrow Airport to John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, New York that was destroyed by a bomb on Wednesday, 21 December 1988, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew members.[2] Large sections of the plane crashed into Lockerbie, Scotland, killing an additional 11 people on the ground.

The PFLP-GC (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command), were the original prime suspects in the bombing. It has emerged since, that a deep cover CIA agent was told by up to 15 high-level Syrian officials that the Syria-based group was involved. He said that the officials interacted with the PFLP-GC’s leader, Ahmed Jibril, “on a constant basis” and that he was the mastermind behind the bombing. Declassified US intelligence documents claim that the group was paid by the Iranian government to avenge the 290 lives lost when Iran Air flight 665 was shot down by a US battleship over the Persian Gulf a few months before Lockerbie.[3]

Following a three-year joint investigation by Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, murder warrants were issued for two Libyan nationals in November 1991. Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi eventually handed over the two men for trial at Camp Zeist, Netherlands, in 1999 after protracted negotiations and UN sanctions. In 2001 Libyan intelligence officer, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, was jailed for the bombing. In August 2009 he was released by the Scottish government on compassionate grounds after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. He died in May 2012 remaining the only person to be convicted for the attack.

In 2003, Gaddafi accepted responsibility for the Lockerbie bombing and paid compensation to the families of the victims, although he maintained never having given the order for the attack.[4] During the Libyan civil war in 2011, a former government official contradicted Gaddafi claiming the Libyan leader had personally ordered the bombing.[4] Despite these assertions, numerous conspiracy theories have developed regarding responsibility for the destruction of Pan Am Flight 103.

To date, in the United Kingdom, this atrocity remains the deadliest aviation incident, as well as the deadliest act of terrorism.

Disintegration of aircraft[edit]

The explosion punched a 20-inch (0.51 m)-wide hole on the left side of the fuselage, almost directly under the "P" in the "Pan Am" logo. Investigators from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) concluded that no emergency procedures had been started in the cockpit.[13] The cockpit voice recorder, located in the tail section of the aircraft, was found in a field by police searchers within 24 hours. There was no evidence of a distress signal; a 180-millisecond hissing noise could be heard as the explosion destroyed the aircraft's communications centre.[14] Although the explosion was in the aircraft hold, the effect was magnified by the large difference in pressure between the aircraft's interior and exterior. The steering cables disrupted, the fuselage pitched downwards and to port.[15]

Investigators from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) of the British Department for Transport concluded that the nose of the aircraft was effectively blown off, and was separated from the main section within three seconds of the explosion. The nose cone was briefly held on by a band of metal but facing aft, like the lid of a can. It then sheered off, up and backwards to starboard, striking off the No. 3 engine and landing some distance from Lockerbie near Tundergarth church.

Fuselage impact[edit]

The fuselage continued moving forward and down until it reached 19,000 ft (5,800 m), at which point its dive became nearly vertical.[16] As it descended, the fuselage broke into smaller pieces, with the section attached to the wings landing first[17] in Sherwood Crescent, Lockerbie, where the 200,000 lb (91,000 kg) of kerosene contained inside ignited. The resulting fireball destroyed several houses.

Investigators were able to determine that both wings had landed in the crater after counting the number of large steel flap drive jackscrews that were later found there[10][page needed]; there was no evidence of the wings found outside the crater itself.[18] The British Geological Survey at nearby Eskdalemuir registered a seismic event at 19.03:36 measuring 1.6 on the Richter scale, which was attributed to the impact.

Another section of the fuselage landed about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) northeast, where it slammed into a home in Park Place. Miraculously, despite the house being completely demolished, its occupant escaped uninjured.

The South African foreign minister Pik Botha and a minor delegation of 22 were supposed to board Pan Am 103, but took the earlier Pan Am 101 flight instead. They were on their way to New York to sign a tripartite agreement, whereby South Africa agreed to hand control of Namibia to the United Nations. Bernt Carlsson, the UN commissioner appointed to take over, was among the victims of Flight 103 as mentioned above.

‘The father of one of the 270 victims of the Lockerbie bombing has asked mourners
to pray for the “innocent family” of the only person convicted of the worst mass
murder in British history, as the nation marked its 25th anniversary.

In his address to a memorial service at Westminster Abbey yesterday evening
attended by relatives of the victims, Dr Jim Swire also accused the British
government of failing to tell “all the truth they know about this terrible tragedy”.

Before the service, the UK, US and Libyan governments in a joint statement
promised to work together to “reveal the full facts of the case”, saying that they
wanted “all those responsible for this most brutal act of terrorism brought to
justice, and to understand why it was committed”.’

Dr Swire said the Libyan intelligence agent Abdelbaset al-Megrahi – jailed for life
for mass murder but released after eight years in prison on compassionate
grounds, as he had terminal cancer – had "died my friend". He also repeated his
claim that a convicted terrorist, an Egyptian now living in Sweden, was involved in
the bombing.

Dr Swire said he had recently tried to confront that man. "All day long the curtains
were drawn shut and the blinds down. Inside was a man who has spent his whole
life as a terrorist. I believe he played a key role in the Lockerbie atrocity," he
said. "Too afraid to answer the bell himself, he sent his wife to an upstairs window
to threaten [me]."

Although he did not name the man, it is understood he was referring to Mohammed
Abu Talb, jailed for life for carrying out terrorist bombings in 1985 in Copenhagen
and Amsterdam, but since released.

Dr Swire, whose 23-year-old daughter Flora was a passenger on the plane, has
previously described Talb as "a life-long, proven terrorist". By contrast, Dr Swire
said he once received a Christmas card from Megrahi: "In it, he had written, 'Dr
Swire and family, please pray for me and my family.' He died my friend.

"Over Christmas, if you pray, please pray for his innocent family, but also for all
those who wrestle with hatred, that they may be healed by God's love. Please pray
also that we who will sit down at a Christmas table with chairs forever empty may
find peace."

Dr Swire also denounced successive British governments. "I claim habeas corpus as
I say in this ancient Abbey that I do not believe that our governments have told us
all the truth they know about this terrible tragedy," he said.

Speaking yesterday to The Independent on Sunday, Dr Swire reiterated his call for
a public inquiry. "If we are not granted an inquiry – and for goodness' sake we've
been trying for 25 years to force an inquiry out of them with no results at all – we'll
have to go to the European courts and take our own government to court for not
meeting their obligations under human rights legislation," he said.

Megrahi's release in 2009 came after the Scottish Criminal Cases Review
Commission gave him leave to appeal for a second time, citing six reasons why
there were serious concerns about his conviction.

Doubts about his guilt were fuelled on Friday, when it was revealed that Dr Richard
Fuisz, a businessman and CIA asset, gave a sworn statement implicating
Palestinian militants.

Under oath in 2001, Dr Fuisz told the original defence team that senior Syrian
officials had told him that the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General
Command, which was based in Syria, had carried out the bombing. This evidence
has never been used in a court.

John Ashton, author of Megrahi: You are my Jury, discovered the deposition by Dr
Fuisz buried in the defence team's files. He said it was "hugely significant" and
further undermined the case against Megrahi. "It's absolutely scandalous there's
never been a public inquiry," he said.

Megrahi's brother, Abdel-Hakim Al-Megrahi, told the BBC that the family planned a
posthumous appeal, and hoped the Libyan government would help fund it. "We
wish for the truth to be revealed, and this is not just for our own benefit but also
for the benefit of the families of the victims and for public opinion," he said. "We
need to know who committed this horrible crime."

Professor Hans Koechler, the UN observer at the trial that convicted Megrahi, also
called for an inquiry, but feared that "power politics [had] made it impossible for
the families to find out what really happened".

At a wreath-laying ceremony in Lockerbie yesterday, the Rev John MacLeod told
mourners: "We, the people of Lockerbie … welcome you once again to this place
where you know you are always welcome. In doing so we seek to comfort and
console you."

The bombers, he said, "chose to set aside their humanity and destroy the lives of
270 people… [and] not only their lives but also those who survived, families and
friends".

I am sorry that I didn't read that last post until now, Cidersomerset.

The Lockerbie case is one that "came to me" a couple years back; i.e. I "knew" it needed to be looked at again.

I didn't know about the man in the above post being of the opinion that the crime was covered up by the UK.

I think they were probably behind 9/11 as well.

The disgusting story has multiple levels of irony considering that not too many years later, the UK was bombing Libyan air defenses. Maybe Gaddafi should have bought that air defense system after all.

The Lockerbie bomber’s release was linked to a £400million arms deal with Libya, secret documents reveal.

They show ‘reprehensible’ connections between the Labour government boosting business and freeing the man convicted of Britain’s worst terrorist atrocity.

An email sent by the then UK ambassador in Tripoli to former premier Tony Blair explained how a prisoner transfer agreement will be signed once Libya ‘fulfils its promise’ to buy an air defence system.

At that meeting, according to Sir Vincent’s email, Mr Blair and Mr Baghdadi agreed that Libya would buy the missile defence system from MBDA, a weapons manufacturer part-owned by BAE Systems. The pair also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a prisoner transfer agreement (PTA), which the Libyans believed would pave the way for Megrahi’s release.

The British government initially intended the agreement to explicitly exclude Megrahi. However, ministers relented under pressure from Libya.
In December 2007, Jack Straw, then justice secretary, told his Scottish counterpart that he had been unable to secure an exclusion, but said any application to transfer Megrahi under the agreement would still have to be signed off by Scottish ministers.

Sir Vincent wrote: “There is one bilateral issue which I hope TB [Tony Blair] can raise, as a legacy issue. On 29 May 07 in Sirte, he and Libya’s PM agreed that Libya would buy an air defence system (Jernas) from the UK (MBDA). One year on, MBDA are now back in Tripoli (since 8 June) aiming to agree and sign the contract now — worth £400 million, and up to 2,000 jobs in the UK.

“Saif [Gaddafi’s son] says they are to come back to conclude; but there is opposition within the Libyan armed forces, from those in the Russian defence equipment camp. We think we have Col Q’s [Gaddafi’s] goodwill for this contract: it would be very helpful if he expressed it more clearly. This issue can also be raised with Libya’s PM, and the Planning Minister. It was PM Baghdadi who told the media on 29 May 07 that Libya would buy British.

“Linked (by Libya) is the issue of the 4 bilateral Justice agreements about which TB signed an MoU with Baghdadi on 29 May. The MoU says they will be negotiated within the year: they have been. They are all ready for signature in London as soon as Libya fulfils its promise on Jernas.”

The UK wasn’t alone in this sort of obnoxious behavior. The French, who were the No. 2 party determined to bomb Gaddafi were nearly as bad.

I grew up in Yemen in the 1980s and Matt Gannon took me and my brothers and sisters to see a "Charlie Brown" play in the American Embassy in Sana'a.
