If you want to know more about the "real world map" phenomenon. Search in Google for "world map projections" and you will find lots of explanations why we were forced to believe that the world looks like this which may be not true...!
Never EVER believe in things. Rather admit that you don't know until you find answers !

The projection rescued by Arno Peters in 1970 was drafted by Gall in the nineteenth century.
It is an equivalent cylindrical projection. Indeed preserves areas and distances but profoundly distorts the shapes of the continents . The Mercator projection, which is the cylindrical type as, preserves the forms but distorts distances and areas. The intent of Peters was just in a political context of African - Asian decolonization best present a size of new independent countries that emerged.
There is no 'correct' projection. And all projections have their ideology, after all are made from choices that are not only technical but also ideological. The Mercator projection is Eurocentric.
For those who want to see the world map now real, undistorted, just open Google Earth. The spherical map is the only way to keep the sizes and distances of the globe. The plan map will never be faithful in every way, always giving rise to various interpretations, as conspiracy theories .
